The way Giles cleaned up I Want You (She's So Heavy) makes the remix of Abbey Road well worth it. I would put The White Album as my favorite remix, just ahead of Revolver.
I would love a remix of everything, including Rubber Soul and before, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine and the Past Masters (for example, songs like Old Brown Shoe or The Ballad Of John And Yoko don't have remixes)
we forget that in those days people usually did not listen to music on headphones. thus the ping pong stereo was not as odd to listen to. plus a lot of people didnt have their speakers very far apart - think of those portable turn tables with their detachable (paper cone) speakers and rather short cables. a lot of 1960s music was stereo-mixed that way: bass on one side, horns on the other etc.
The original engineering and production on Abbey Road was sublime, helped by the all new transistorised desk in studio 2. It was only ever mixed in stereo, so I agree it didn't really warrant a remix but of course that wouldn't stop them wanting to make a new product for us to buy.
Fantastic, Michael! I think that Revolver remix is the best stereo version of the album. That’s the go-to release but many found little nuanced problems with it but I don’t. It’s much more expansive and open. Good job, as usual.
IMHO, The UK "Revolver" is the best LP The Beatles ever released. "Let It Be Naked" was a Paul project and sucks in comparison to the original and the remix. John's vocal studio shenanigans belong on the LP. Very interesting commentary from Michael.
Nice work. But which is it ? You mentioned each as your fave. Your Favorite is ?? Rubber Soul? White Album? Revolver? We all love em all. Ty for your efforts here! Greg
Hey Michael, another great topic! I'm really enjoying these!!! Here's my ranking from worst to best: 5. Abbey Road (original mix was great - only improvement was centering lead vocal in "Here Comes The Sun".) 4. Let It Be 3. White Album (main issue - adding ADT to vocals in some songs, eg. "Savoy Truffle".) 2. Revolver (far better than original mix - but with the new source separation technology they could have taken it further eg. separating guitars in dual guitar songs.) 1. Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band ( i think what they have done is brilliant.) I hope they go further with the remixes when they do the other early albums. And when they do M Mystery Tour, i hope they add 1 or 2 instrumental pieces to the soundtrack side & "You Know My Name" (1967 recording) to the B side. Tiger.
Mike I love your channel I watch it all the time. I've been doing a McCartney tribute since my 20s and i'm 58 now so I especially dig your Beatles and Paul segments. We have the same views on everything I've ever heard you say on your shows, and I was blown away by the Uriah Heep show! I love them and not alot of people I know have even heard of them..amazing! Keep 'em coming and peace, love and understanding.
I personally felt the White Album remix buried some instruments that stood out in the original, and unburied some elements - particularly background vocals - that didn't deserve the prominence they now have. I always bought the stereo versions of Beatle albums when they first came out, so moving anything from one side to the other, or even to the center, sounds weird to me. Now I wish I hadn't sold my mono box set: we know that's the way they wanted it to be heard.
If I ever win a decent chunk of cash on the lottery then I could justify spending £300 uk on a mono box set. Really wish I'd bought it on release but wasn't paying any attention to music releases at that time as so busy with work & family
Really enjoyed this presentation! I couldn't agree more with your analysis of the Beatles remixes. Let It Be Naked sounds better produced as a proper album without the chatter, false starts & stops than Let It Be. The Giles Martin (as Phil Spector's) remix is not as coherent or cohesive, more a live jam with orchestral overdubs which always bugged McCartney.
Not being anything more than a casual listener, I find your comments very instructive. Nevertheless all these remixes give me the same feeling as I got with the introduction of the CD with everyone going on about not hearing any scratch. I grew up with the imperfect version, which I loved, so it is hard to really care to much about any other version. Great video again, Michael, with a lot of food for thought!
How long before the record companies start selling a "mix your own" kit or app or something where people can reassemble any classic recordings they like?
A very interesting analysis of these remixes, Michael. In terms of pronunciations, Esher is as you pronounced with the 'E' sounding as in 'Egg'. Giles Martin's first name is pronounced with a soft 'G' as in 'Gypsy'. Hope you don't mind. Please keeo your posts coming as I get so much from them. I'm really lookong forward to the remixes of the pre Revolver albums.
I just got the remixes for Revolver and Pepper for Christmas, and they are both wonderful. The only problem I have with the Pepper mix is the sped up She's Leaving Home. I personally prefer the slower version, and I think the original mix was good as is. Also in terms of the Abbey Road mix, I do think some changing was needed. I think most of the mixes on the album were good, but some of the panning on songs like You Never Give Me Your Money needed tweaking. While I don't believe they handled the mixes the best, I do think they could have improved upon the original album if less tampering had been done to the artists original purpose. Great video!
I actually found the separation of instruments on early stereo version of Beatles music interesting because being someone who like to hear each individual instruments I could hear that more in those early stereo versions. It gave me a better idea of how the music was put together.
I still go back to the OGs..love the imperfections if any...I bet, infants today will enjoy the 50th anniversary remix of Stones " Blue and Lonesome" by Don Was' s son in 2066..
Funny! Love BLUE & LONESOME. Reminds me, though, how I wish I'd hung on to my vinyl EXILE ON MAIN STREET. The recent CD release has all the scuzz removed and it was that dank, dirty sound that defined that set of songs.
That is my name in Korean Sue! The 2 bars stand for second degree black belt! I am a Martial arts instructor in Taekwondo!❤ It’s my Black Belt draped over my monitor❤
Sweet! My late Marine brother had black belts in Tae kwondo & another style. The one that is great hand fighting. Hop...something. He was a badass? He had a cool pair of lead filled chuks..A double strand held them together. Man, I'd hit myself in the neck when I was learning.
I learned Tai Chi for stress at Hartnell College in Salinas by a French lady. I used to ride a mountain bike for exercise & I would take a break in a park & do some Tae Chi. My hands would warm up real quick. I used to spar with my brother in 1973-1976 & friends of mine in Oklahoma. Like in 1977...
For me, the bright spot on Abbey Road is I Want You (She's So Heavy) finally being de-hissed. At least there is nothing Beatles wise to compare to the absolutely horrible Chicago Transit Authority 50th anniversary remix. It gives lo-fi a paradigm! Yeeech!!!!
Out of curiosity I am not trained in this field just curious but what does the future look like for sound and mixing? You said that stereo was thought to be a fad and it makes me wonder what fad we might have right now.
Your comment about stereo being looked at as a gimmick reminded me of a question I wanted to ask you. A few days ago, I was going through my 60 plus Elvis albums my mom had left me when she passed away in 2021. A lot of these are really old albums. In fact all of them are really old but some appear to have come from the late '50s and early '60s. Anyhow, I was looking for some of the Elvis Christmas albums she had so that I could listen to them since it's Christmas time. And one of them had a Special Notice on the back cover near the right bottom. It was about a new Orthophonic High Fidelity pressing this album was supposed to be in. When I saw that it kind of cracked me up because it said you don't have to worry about this becoming an outdated technology or something to that effect. I wish I could just post the picture I took of it in this reply. Anyway it was trying to assure people that they wouldn't be wasting their time or money on this orthophonic record. I've not even heard of an orthophonic record. What in the world is that? I was thinking this was a 1962 stereo pressing of Elvis at first but then I realized it was mono. So it was before stereo was even getting used at least regularly. I haven't researched it myself yet but I was wondering if you might have a quick answer as to what an orthophonic high fidelity LP is? I can tell you it didn't sound as hi+fi has the 1971 Elvis Christmas album did haha. BTW, I really enjoyed your video. I have thought that all of the remixes we're going to all be horrible after hearing the Abbey Road and Let It Be recent mixes. I don't have the other ones yet so I'm looking forward to finally getting the White Album and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band! Merry Christmas Michael and I hope you have a Happy New Year as well! 🎄 Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
My ratings of the remixes: Revolver (2022 Mix) - 8/10 -Could've been better with low-ends and panning on all tracks -Didn't like the remix of She Said, She Said with lack of cymbals -Didn't like the panning on Yellow Submarine compared to the 2015 mix of it which is better -Wish the drums and guitar were more prominent on Here, There, and Everywhere -Didn't like the panning of the effects on Tomorrow Never Knows -Taxman's guitar could have been a bit louder Sgt. Pepper (2017 Mix) - 10/10 -Great remix -Love the low-end sounds on all tracks The White Album (2018 Mix) - 9/10 -I wish Helter Skelter sounded grittier Abbey Road (2019 Mix) - 10/10 -The remix gave more clarity to the tracks -Here Comes the Sun and Oh! Darling have better stereo placings now -The End sounds better Let It Be (2021 Mix) - 9.5/10 -I wish One After 909 had a wider stereo mix
I agree with everything for the reasons you stated. Abbey Road didn't need a rebuild. Neither did Let It Be as I figure Spector's version was a good as anything for what it is but Spector fumbled badly by leaving Don't Let Me Down off. Pepper and Revolver are so new and sparkling stereo versions of the mono albums. Love them White album? Love it except for one niggling thing that bugs the heck out of me: the chaos was mixed out of Helter Skelter. Chaos was what that song was all about and it had been neutered and made to sound polite. Ringo's moment where he explains about the blisters,,,, hardly audible. I give a HARD FAIL to Helter Skelter.
Agree re "Helter Skelter". Right from the get-go, Giles and Sam Okell took that fantastic jagged guitar chord progression in the intro not only down in the mix but seemed to have EQ'd the EDGE right out making it too soft.
I generally agree with your rankings, Michael. Abbey Road didn't need a remix whereas the remixes of Pepper and The White Album brought out more details and better dynamics. I like the remix of Revolver though some of the tracks tend to sound a bit too sterile/revealing IMHO, especially She Said, She Said.
Everything you say is logic. Beatles didn't even release mono versions of Abbey Road and Let it Be. The other stereo mixes are based on the mono mix (better for Giles): White Album, Sgt Pepper, Revolver and soon Rubber Soul (most in need of new mix) Is new stereo mixes of Abbey Road and Let it Be really a mix-down of the 5.1 mixes? 🙂
I think Rubber Soul is next, but actually, "Please Please Me" will turn 60 this year! If I had a decision on these things, I would not miss the chance of making a super deluxe remix and edition of the very first one in its anniversary.
Michael - did you do a review when the Abbey Road remix debuted three years ago? If so could you link it. I am curious to hear the differences you noticed from the original mix. Thanks, love this channel! You have a lot of great insights.
Excellent video again. As a musician I understand a lot of what you’re talking about with mixing. Haven’t heard Revolver yet getting it for Christmas from my beautiful wife. Funny I had the pleasure of talking to Geoff Emmerick about a lot of the studio stuff. I met him in Vegas where he was doing the Cheap Trick doing Sgt. Peppers show. He was very kind with his time & very humble. I agree with your assessment of these remixes.
These remixes have definitely been a mixed bag. Every time one drops, there's the usual ranting and raving that greets each one. I get the box sets primarily for the demos and books. I also don't mind the existence of alternate remixes, as long as there is no concerted effort to replace the originals (which has always been my problem with what George Lucas did with his embarrassing Special Editions of the original Star Wars trilogy - he pretty much buried access to the originals and that is the worst possible crime against art). As you know, I wholeheartedly agree about the new Revolver remix. Excellent and a good sign for things to come. The deluxe White Album, as a whole, was the best release overall due to those amazing Esher demos. Great video as always, Michael!
Perhaps you could define remix a bit more, there may a reason why revolver wins out. There are remixs fron orginals as they exist, and then comes the remixes from the orginal tracks using Peter Jacksons technology. His technology was first used on revolver. And as you know was created in tge process of making the latest doc- get back. Thank you Michael. And yes, there are just somethings that dont need a remix. Cheers
'Allo 'Allo Mike. Tim here from Ottawa Canada. I took a while getting back to you about the pathetic ticket prices these days. Gotta say that I think you hit the nail on the head there and that I don't think John would put up with the robbery called ticket master. I wasn't anywhere near able to afford to see Paul when he came to Ottawa. It appears that I won't be able to see anyone I like so needless to say it totally sucks. Anyway, I hope you're doing great and keep up the good work bro.
Good to hear from you Tim! And yes, many of us regular folk can’t begin to afford decent tickets to see the artists we supported for their entire careers! It’s so nice they remember! NOT!😉👌❤🤔
I have to agree Submarine Songtrack I received for Christmas a few years ago from my son, I read the credits gave a listen and I noticed a big difference great remix.
Hi Michael! Love this! Love your channel! I love the "Sgt. Pepper's" Remix deluxe set. Received it on June 1st 2017. It's excellent! The 5.1 Mix is amazing. I think "Abbey Road" is good. There's some extra "Come Together" phrases in the remix. The medley is nice sounding too. "The Beatles" remix was very surprising in a good way. Some nuances in "Don't Pass Me By". 5.1 mix in that is top notch for me. "Let it Be" I dig (or "Dig It"). Heard the remix, yet to hear the 5.1. Although "Revolver" I believe is their best (and my favorite) album, I didn't get it. It didn't sound right to me. No 5.1 either which was disappointing. Giles completely stripped down "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "She Said, She Said". I'll stick with the original LPs with that one 😊Keep up the good work. How can I promote your channel on my channel?
Hi Michael. Fabulous video, how do you compare the Yellow Submarine Songtrack album and Let It Be...Naked album? They are both remix albums (Let It Be...Naked is partially remixed), just not done by the Martin/Okell team. Then there is the Love album by George Martin/Giles Martin team, do you compare it with the other remixes, if so how do you rate/regard it?
The 2009 remasters are superior. Compare she said she said from 2009 and the 2022 mix Yesterday I was listening to sgt pepper the Giles Martin remix and noticed something during a really cool song I've always liked, good morning. At 1:16 George Harrison's really cool guitar part comes in and a few seconds later it fizzles out in a really cool fuzzy distorted way on the 2009 version. You hear this from the left earphone. I noticed yesterday the the Giles Martin remix the awesome fussy fade out of this guitar part isn't as clear and it's on the right side speaker, his fuzzy fade out happens at 1:28 just for reference. Guitar part starts at 1:16 and fuzzy fade out starts at 1:28
I'll be a little kinder to Abbey Road but I know where you are coming from. I find the Giles version to be a little warmer than the '09 remaster. Sun King loses some of its swampy ambience in the remix. But even the '09 remaster has issues for me. I swear that I could hear John change pickups on I Want You. I can no longer hear that little click on either version. I like hearing those little details. Another minor quibble is A Day in the Life from Pepper. I kind of wish that they had kept the panning on John's voice. It was something that I liked. Lucy also has a change with the new panning of the organ riff. It's okay but it's different. Meh. You are right in saying that care must be given to preserve the vision. It's like a movie based on historical events becomes the defacto truth for a lot of people. It would be sad to play broken telephone with any "classic" album. But overall I am definitely super stoked about all these new remixes. I'm hoping that Giles And Sam finish up the catalogue. I would really love to hear what they would do to '63 to '65 material. Can you imagine?
agree 100 %...get back film and revovler (the technology...which was used by fbi to separte background noise from mafia etc. recordings) went to great use...gilles was working chronologically from pepper onwards but never should have touched the hi-fi still magnificent abbey road...and luckily the timing/tech was perfect for Revolver...it really is wonderous.
Enjoyed this survey and your detailed comments, especially regarding REVOLVER and SGT. PEPPER'S. I prefer the Mono mixes to most of the stereo mixes of the Beatles, especially the pre-PEPPER albums as they were mixed with the band present. The 2009 stereo version of REVOLVER still sounds lopsided, especially on headphones (as you mentioned). I agree that the recent ABBEY ROAD remix was both unnecessary and heavy-handed. When someone starts messing with the established soundstage of an iconic album, there's going to be trouble. I also agree that the "White Album" probably had much to gain, both from a remix and archival standpoint. However, you seemed to gloss over the recent LET IT BE remix, speaking more about the previous ...NAKED release. As someone who preferred the warmth of the original LET IT BE vinyl album to the 2009 stereo release on CD, I was interested in hearing your impressions of this most recent remix. What is it about that version that ranked such a mediocre mark? Great job, Michael. I look forward to your content in 2023! All the best!
@ Michael Noland: The Bottom Line For Sgt Pepper, White Album, Abbey Road, Let It Be and Revolver, I like both their 2009 stereo remastered versions and as well as their 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022 remixed versions.
Great ranking ….Abbey Road didn’t need any tweaking as it was a perfect sounding record since they got it right b6 1969. The White Album was great for the bonus content and Revolver and Pepper needed the most remixing and Giles nailed it. Thanks for sharing these great videos!
Part of the problem is everyone wants to be that 5th Beatle so meddling occurs rather than respectfully detached producing for the benefit of the songs. Imo.
I picked up the recent remix of PEPPER'S, thinking I'd keep my mono and dump the 2009 stereo. Listening to each was like a different experience with respective highs and lows. Ended up keeping all three... the only album I've done that with.
I really need to bite my tongue Sue! Some don’t get the humor and taste it as disrespectful! No disrespect ever intended!❤ But thanx so much for your support!❤
I have limited resources on Social Security. I took your advice & bought the box set of Revolver. I bought the 3 CD set of the White Album for the Esher demos & the Giles Martin remix. I also bought the 2 CD set of Sgt. Pepper for the re-mix & "Strawberry Fields Forever" & "Penny Lane" on the second CD. I think Abbey Road 2009 is perfect just as it is. I have the 2009 Let It Be & Let It Be...Naked. Thanks for your review. It helped me save money. BTW Giles is pronounced Jiles.
Interesting take on the remixes, but I have to disagree on a couple of things. Abbey Road always seemed to me to have some elements that were too low in the mix, especially “Come Together.” The electric piano and guitars are barely audible in the verses and needed to be turned up, but only a little. “Oh Darling” is my personal favorite of any Giles remix because the backing vocals are heavenly. The original mix had them much too quiet, IMO. BTW, were you aware that the mixing consoles for EMI Studios were solid state by the time of the sessions for Abbey Road? Kenneth Womack wrote an interesting book about it a few years ago. The other thing was the White Album. Giles took a few too many liberties, although he did clean up the sound of the album, overall. “Helter Skelter” isn’t the same without the bass prominent in the mix and “IVE GOT BLISTERS ON MY FINGERS” is turned down? Why? There’s a few other places he should have left alone, but no remix isn’t worth a listen. I admit Revolver has a really good remix, but the bass on “Taxman” was a little much for my car speakers when listening to the CD. Another favorite remix was “Fixing A Hole”. I hear harmonies there that aren’t as prominent in the ‘67 mix. Enjoy your videos. Cheers.
You didn't review the best Beatles remix of them all THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL?! That remix is so INCREDIBLE, the Beatles live and ABSOLUTELY ROCKING! It totally blows away the ABSOLUTE MYTH that The Beatles weren't a good live band! In fact, the remix is so good The Hollywood Bowl remix is my ABSOLUTE VERY FAVORITE BEATLE ALBUM!
Anyone know if Real Love/Free as a Bird are getting remixed? I know that after settling for the tinny vocal track for FAAB, they discovered later that a better one was available -- and had been *released* on the "Imagine" OST album!
On The Beatles "1" Deluxe from 2015, "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love" on the dvd are both not only remixed but especially on "Real Love", there are more parts heard (extra guitar parts really predominant). The keyboard on "Real Love" has been really beefed up right in the intro.
TL:DR too bad you have to read tor ignore this about Abbey Road.: Agree w the stereo aspect. My concern is with the future. It's rampant w modern groups, so what's going to happen once someone takes liberties with fine tuning instruments and vocals. It terrifies me. OH! Listening to Abbey Road while at the infusion clinic non-stop. I really wish they'd have left off "Octopus es Garden" and "Maxwell's Hammer," "Polythene Pam" took me a minute, but it segues well into, "She Came Into the Bathroom Window." The entire Side B gives "Dark Side of the Moon" vibes. Paul McCartney, my least favorite member, killed it on Side B. And I read in Ultimate Guitar I read it was McCartney had in ordering the songs for the medley. So sublime. A perfect song would've been "Sun King" except that Lennon wrote throw away lyrics in Italian. They're nonsensical. I had to completely reexamine my feelings about McCartney. I still think he writes "Silly Love Songs," pun intended. But "Oh Darling," "You Never Give Me Your Money," and "Golden Slumbers," which I've always loved, are for the ages. Also features some of Ringo's best drumming! "Mean Mr. Mustard" and "The End," are the greatest examples. Thanks for making me think about their music in terms of albums instead of songs I hear as single hits I won't be around much. I'm back in infusion, and it's kicking my butt. I look like someone broke my nose lol. I'll be better soon. It's affective. I might have found a job that works better with my situation, so that'd be great.P.S. I wonder why Manson thought The White Album was his influence when thematically this album fits his inner demons as well. 😍❤👍
I hope the Beatles/Martin didn't spend too much time mixing Revolver and Sgt Pepper. I mean, mixing four tracks for stereo...? Capitol had to use all sorts of tricks just to get decent stereo mixes from those old four track tapes.
Remix uses elements but never really stays true to the original, hence the term remix. Remaster usually stays as close to true form and usually seeks improvement (enhanced) on what is already there.
Abbey Road didn't need much, maybe nothing. The original was/is fantastic. Let it Be Naked is the wonderful. It's good to get the Esher Album as good as we can hear it. Good songs are still good without electrification. With these remixes, Revolver has become my favorite album. It was the perfect mix of experimentation balanced off with doing too much, which I think happened with Sgt Pepper (still a great album).
I bought them all and agree with your ranking although I don't give Sgt. Pepper the same degree of praise as it earns here, Michael, Revolver is definitely top o' the heep. Abbey Road simply tried too hard and yeah, it didn't really demand a remix.😎👍
Yeah as a Beatle fan,,this is quite strange 1 was born in 1967 under the sign of capricorn so Sgt Pepper should be my fav album ...im sorry its not according to Chinese New Year my date comes under the 1966 year of the Horse Revolver to me is very close to my heart as Reolver is my fav album xxoo
Agree completely about Let It Be Naked. It’s far superior to the original LIB. No pointless chatter, snippets of noodling about and over blown orchestration. More to the original concept of back to basics. I don’t even bother with the original Let It Be release.
totally agree, the only thing i don't like os that it uses the single version of the let it be guitar solo instead of the album version which i think is way better
The extreme sterio versions were needed to i as a3year old that curled up on either left or right studying each ,separated, and my Duch father going every weekend to those albums in a surround sound car speakers to cancer treatments before death it was his religious experience to say that’s what I doesn’t all that money for 🥰🍏❤️
The original Abbey Road first UK pressing is perfect. The remixes are interesting but Revolver is fantastic. Saying that the UK monos are still the best. Those remixed red and blues have destroyed some classic songs like hey jude, she loves you and all my loving.
The Problem with all the remixes is agreement on preferred format blu-ray audio vs cd vs high quality Vinyl vs streaming. Right now you can pay a million dollars for the complete White Album or 1 hundred dollars for Revolver. Giles this format thing or controversy is so dumb.
Before watching the video here’s my prediction: Best: Sgt Pepper Worst: White Album Most useless: Abbey Road I feel mostly neutral about Let it Be and Revolver remixes. In my opinion I think the closest thing Giles has gotten to a slam dunk remix is pepper.
Couldn’t disagree more about the Let it Be remix. I think it’s awesome. Let It be naked is my least favorite of the 4 let it be’s. I have had for over 50 years “the silver album by the worlds greatest “ which is a bootleg of the Geoff Emerick mixes. 1. Phil Spector original release. 2. Giles Martin remix. 3. The bootleg. 4. Naked which was bland and vanilla , suer disappointing ✌️🎸🎼
The way Giles cleaned up I Want You (She's So Heavy) makes the remix of Abbey Road well worth it. I would put The White Album as my favorite remix, just ahead of Revolver.
I would love a rubber soul remix.
Rubber Soul on my list, and another one I like to see get a Remix is Magical Mystery Tour.
@@jimwood1584 That would be cool. Also maybe a meet the Beatles only because the production on that album has always felt off
Honestly, I would like a remix of a hard day's night, magical mystery tour, rubber soul and please please me, we NEED remixes
It's coming out, this year...
I would love a remix of everything, including Rubber Soul and before, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine and the Past Masters (for example, songs like Old Brown Shoe or The Ballad Of John And Yoko don't have remixes)
I agree with this ranking whole heartedly. All your points are bang on. I`m looking forward to the remixing of Help! Be gentle Giles
we forget that in those days people usually did not listen to music on headphones. thus the ping pong stereo was not as odd to listen to. plus a lot of people didnt have their speakers very far apart - think of those portable turn tables with their detachable (paper cone) speakers and rather short cables. a lot of 1960s music was stereo-mixed that way: bass on one side, horns on the other etc.
Hands down…you are my definitive Beatles expert. I thought I knew…ha ! Thanks, Michael
Thanx, Mark!❤
The original engineering and production on Abbey Road was sublime, helped by the all new transistorised desk in studio 2. It was only ever mixed in stereo, so I agree it didn't really warrant a remix but of course that wouldn't stop them wanting to make a new product for us to buy.
Michael you nailed it! Love your perspective ❤
Let it Be Naked is much better than the original
Brilliant commentary as usual Michael ! Thank you
Thanx so much Elvis!❤
Nice work. But which is it ? You mentioned each as your fave. Your Favorite is ?? Rubber Soul? White Album? Revolver? We all love em all. Ty for your efforts here! Greg
It's pronounced as the 'J' for the G.
Jiles.
I love his work on all he's done.
Hey Michael, another great topic! I'm really enjoying these!!! Here's my ranking from worst to best:
5. Abbey Road (original mix was great - only improvement was centering lead vocal in "Here Comes The Sun".)
4. Let It Be
3. White Album (main issue - adding ADT to vocals in some songs, eg. "Savoy Truffle".)
2. Revolver (far better than original mix - but with the new source separation technology they could have taken it further eg. separating guitars in dual guitar songs.)
1. Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band ( i think what they have done is brilliant.)
I hope they go further with the remixes when they do the other early albums. And when they do M Mystery Tour, i hope they add 1 or 2 instrumental pieces to the soundtrack side & "You Know My Name" (1967 recording) to the B side. Tiger.

The first one stood out for me , The Tambourine is missing on Dear Prudence
If I ever win a decent chunk of cash on the lottery then I could justify spending £300 uk on a mono box set.
Really wish I'd bought it on release but wasn't paying any attention to music releases at that time as so busy with work & family
Really enjoyed this presentation! I couldn't agree more with your analysis of the Beatles remixes. Michael; FYI, I saw and interview with Giles Martin and Sam Okell, the engineer, where Sam pronounced Giles name as Jiles
I really have to get some of these remixed records.
Great show O Tribemeister
Thanx, Book!❤
How long before the record companies start selling a "mix your own" kit or app or something where people can reassemble any classic recordings they like?
LOL! I see it coming George!😉👌❤
Mix-Your-Own! The audio version of the coloring books we grew up with!❤
A very interesting analysis of these remixes, Michael.
@@deanjonasson6776 agree , stones should be heard dirty and muddy, not like Steely Dan or Supertramp
I love the Beatles coffee cups! What's the meaning of the banner beside your name? I dig your shirt.
That is my name in Korean Sue!

I should've known your belt! It's been a long time since I've seen a belt. Oops.
He was a badass. A parachutist in the Corp & a prison guard. Also a weapons expert.
For me, the bright spot on Abbey Road is I Want You (She's So Heavy) finally being de-hissed.
At least there is nothing Beatles wise to compare to the absolutely horrible Chicago Transit Authority 50th anniversary remix. It gives lo-fi a paradigm! Yeeech!!!!
LOL! I’ve heard so, but need to give it a Yeeechin, er, uh I mean listen! Thanx Rick!❤
I like my original Beatles albums. I love listening to vintage records. Good video. I like what you said about record companies erasing history.

My ratings of the remixes:
Revolver (2022 Mix) - 8/10
-Could've been better with low-ends and panning on all tracks
-Didn't like the remix of She Said, She Said with lack of cymbals
-Didn't like the panning on Yellow Submarine compared to the 2015 mix of it which is better
-Wish the drums and guitar were more prominent on Here, There, and Everywhere
-Didn't like the panning of the effects on Tomorrow Never Knows
-Taxman's guitar could have been a bit louder
Sgt. Pepper (2017 Mix) - 10/10
-Great remix
-Love the low-end sounds on all tracks
The White Album (2018 Mix) - 9/10
-I wish Helter Skelter sounded grittier
Abbey Road (2019 Mix) - 10/10
-The remix gave more clarity to the tracks
-Here Comes the Sun and Oh! Darling have better stereo placings now
-The End sounds better
Let It Be (2021 Mix) - 9.5/10
-I wish One After 909 had a wider stereo mix
I agree with everything for the reasons you stated. Abbey Road didn't need a rebuild. Neither did Let It Be as I figure Spector's version was a good as anything for what it is but Spector fumbled badly by leaving Don't Let Me Down off.
Pepper and Revolver are so new and sparkling stereo versions of the mono albums. Love them
White album?
The other stereo mixes are based on the mono mix (better for Giles):
White Album, Sgt Pepper, Revolver and soon Rubber Soul (most in need of new mix)
Is new stereo mixes of Abbey Road and Let it Be really a mix-down of the 5.1 mixes? 🙂
1. Sgt. Pepper 2. Abbey Road 3. White album 4. Let it Be 5.Revolver
I think Rubber Soul is next, but actually, "Please Please Me" will turn 60 this year! If I had a decision on these things, I would not miss the chance of making a super deluxe remix and edition of the very first one in its anniversary.
After listening to A Hard Day’s Night on CD it really needs remastered, the 2009 version not so good.
Michael - did you do a review when the Abbey Road remix debuted three years ago? If so could you link it. I am curious to hear the differences you noticed from the original mix. Thanks, love this channel! You have a lot of great insights.
Excellent!
Thanks Wayne! Hope all is well with you brother!❤
Thanx, Bruce and you’re right regarding Lucas! We were told they were alternative versions as I recall, not the definitive films!❤😉👌
I really love Revolver and Sgt Pepper, but it could be even more "perfectier" if the snare was 100% centered all the time.
NOT!😉👌❤🤔
Great Video! Can't wait for Rubber Soul Remix!
Nice job, Michael. Don't forget that the "Yellow Submarine Songtrack" from 1999 is a remix, too 😉
I have to agree Submarine Songtrack I received for Christmas a few years ago from my son, I read the credits gave a listen and I noticed a big difference great remix.
@@jimwood1584 Yes, this 1999 remix was done very well. Was a revelation when it came out and still stands up pretty well.
Hi Michael!
Worst to best:
5:Abbey Road
4:Let It Be
3:Sgt. Pepper
2:White Album
1:Revolver
The 2009 remasters are superior. Compare she said she said from 2009 and the 2022 mix
Yesterday I was listening to sgt pepper the Giles Martin remix and noticed something during a really cool song I've always liked, good morning. Guitar part starts at 1:16 and fuzzy fade out starts at 1:28
As much as I'd like to get the remixes it just ain't in the cards. I do look forward to your opinions on them though.
You remind of the guy in the old freedom rock commercials. "Turn it up".
The remix of good morning good morning is just so much better than the original.
Will ypu do review on the red and blue remix?
Are you gonna review the new paul McCartney box release?
As a major McCartney, I will when I eventually get access to that amazing collection!❤
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine awesome. I'll be on the lookout. Love the videos. You should have more subscribers.
Hello. RS is also my favourite album.
@ Michael Noland: The Bottom Line For Sgt Pepper, White Album, Abbey Road, Let It Be and Revolver, I like both their 2009 stereo remastered versions and as well as their 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022 remixed versions.
The White album is my favorite Beatles album and my favorite reissue/remix Beatles album, love it !
I love how 1 sounds
Great ranking ….Abbey Road didn’t need any tweaking as it was a perfect sounding record since they got it right b6 1969. The White Album was great for the bonus content and Revolver and Pepper needed the most remixing and Giles nailed it. Thanks for sharing these great videos!
Thanx, Bill!❤
I actually like the original stereo mixes of Rubber Soul and Revolver! Look at She Said She Said Geoff Emerick did fine!
I love the remix of Let It Be. I actually prefer it over the Naked version.
The Chicago Transit Authority album remix is a crime... Unlistenable mostly. Cheers from England. ☺.
They may now need to revisit ‘sgt. pepper’ with the ‘revolver’ tech.
Part of the problem is everyone wants to be that 5th Beatle so meddling occurs rather than respectfully detached producing for the benefit of the songs. Imo.
great video, I'll have to re-visit the sgt. pepper release
I picked up the recent remix of PEPPER'S, thinking I'd keep my mono and dump the 2009 stereo. Listening to each was like a different experience with respective highs and lows. Ended up keeping all three... the only album I've done that with.
The only change I would've made to Abbey Road is center the bass and drums. That's it.
Esher Demos…….Sounds like Easher. A nice upmarket town in Surrey, England.
Great job! I love the term "Grade these Suckers!"
Agree with Revolver being best. I’m not sure why so many RUclipsrs are so critical!
I love “Guyles”😂
A totally agree with this list❤
Cheers.
Pepper remix is my fave except She's Leaving Home sounds extremely fast
Agreed 100% Michael. 👍👍
Pronouncing “Giles” with a hard G aside, I endorse this ranking!
Your right revolver is the best recording
How did I miss this?
You called the order quite correctly. The muck up of Abbey Road was very disturbing.
Question on the Abbey Road remix you do not like. This is not the 2009 remaster is it?
Agree completely about Let It Be Naked. It’s far superior to the original LIB. No pointless chatter, snippets of noodling about and over blown orchestration. More to the original concept of back to basics. I don’t even bother with the original Let It Be release.
totally agree, the only thing i don't like os that it uses the single version of the let it be guitar solo instead of the album version which i think is way better
This is very similar to comparing the individual turds in a Dons John.
Ah! The porta-potty of releases eh?😉❤
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine Someone needs to figure out a way to keep Giles Martin away from Beatles master tapes and mixing boards.
Sounds like you're speaking from experience? Is comparing turds your specialty?
Let it be naked is let it be remix album by the Beatles.
When will McCartney and co clean up the vocals on free as a bird and real love
The extreme sterio versions were needed to i as a3year old that curled up on either left or right studying each ,separated, and my Duch father going every weekend to those albums in a surround sound car speakers to cancer treatments before death it was his religious experience to say that’s what I doesn’t all that money for 🥰🍏❤️
The original Abbey Road first UK pressing is perfect. The remixes are interesting but Revolver is fantastic. Saying that the UK monos are still the best. Those remixed red and blues have destroyed some classic songs like hey jude, she loves you and all my loving.
But shame about the heavy bass EQ and dynamic limiting. What a waste ! Thanks you Mr. Martin jr.
2009 revolver was terrible. Paul's voice would pop in and out. And his bass was over done. The new sgt. Pepper is great!
The Problem with all the remixes is agreement on preferred format blu-ray audio vs cd vs high quality Vinyl vs streaming. Right now you can pay a million dollars for the complete White Album or 1 hundred dollars for Revolver. Giles this format thing or controversy is so dumb.
Before watching the video here’s my prediction:
Best: Sgt Pepper
Worst: White Album
Most useless: Abbey Road
I feel mostly neutral about Let it Be and Revolver remixes. In my opinion I think the closest thing Giles has gotten to a slam dunk remix is pepper.
I was quite wrong
Very well explained thank you!
Your right I can hardly listen to abbey road it’s that bad , I bought it on vinyl
The Helter Skelter 2018 remix is terrible, its just all wrong. I enjoy some of the remixes but I'm not sure what happened with that....
