The great old K’s and old A’s have an underlying white noise hiss to them that is not in most of the new cymbals. It is usually a build that happens with that white noise underneath and great stick articulation on the top end, whether the cymbal sounds dark or bright. I have noticed it with both ends of the spectrum on the really great ones. As others have said there are lots that sound like trash can lids or are so wide open that they are uncontrollable. Great video, love the comparisons and the Funch cymbals seem to have that same white noise when they open up
I’m 2 minutes into this video and it’s the most refreshing thing I’ve seen on RUclips in years. You have such a good vibe man. Thanks for just being you. Great content
Some old K's are treasures. Some are trash can lids. My observation is that some drummers buy a stamp not a sound. Those oldies are notorious for being inconsistent and besides the occasional treasure that sounds like it was hammered by the gods I've heard some that I wouldn't pay a dollar for. I've also seen unscrupulous or uniformed sellers split up a pair of band or orchestral cymbals and try to sell them as "jazz rides". Let your ears tell you if the pie's worth the price.
Same with vintage A’s. To my ears and experience, when Zildjian introduced machine hammering in 60’s they become more inconsistent. There is bigger chance to find what you like in 50’s era manufacture. I keep two cymbals (20” and 22” both mid 50’s hollow block stamp) out of my multiple “buy, try, sell or keep” story. It took me few years to find. One of the best cymbals I ever heard in my life was 18” K IIa stamp, spider cracked on the bell (it was very quiet, someone thought it was crash, but actually it was extremely thin ride). I had 20” K new stamp too. Sound compared old K’s have a smoky dark wash, while new stamp was more into avedis “harsh”, brighter wash and definition. Since few years I turned to Paiste, which are consistent in sound, whatever era.
Imagine my suprise having ordered a Funch Elvin Jones tribute 20" just two days ago. and watching this just now sounded superb (Although it is you playing it!) Hope mine sounds as good as yours.... That Artisan sounded increds..
I got back into drumming after not owning a set for 35 years. Got Pearl Exports on the cheap with Sabian B8s. New heads helped the drums, and I recently upgraded to a set of old Avedis Zildjians. They sound good to me but to be honest, my old mismatched Zildjian bottom with Sabian upper hat sounded as good or better to me. It could be my hearing!😮
Back in the day, when old Ks were a lot cheaper, and the big cymbal companies weren't making anything that truly resembled the old cymbals (the hand-hammered early American K rides didn't really cut it), it was totally worth it. Now, not so much. Well, old Ks at least. Old As are still affordable.
I’ve got a first run 30th anniversary Agop that is as good or better than the best old k I’ve ever heard. It’s not the stamp or even the brand. Sometimes a real gem shows up with all of the brands new and old. Speaking of old Ks, Rick Dior has some good ones
Great cymbals & video Tim!! May I ask what series of Aquarian drum heads are on the kit in the video and which heads are your favourites? Thanks for the great swing!!
Im probably going to buy the agean treasure jazz cymbal set. I was told by agean and others that they resemble the old k zildjians best on today's market. Any thoughts much appreciated
Personally I love vintage As. They are totally worth it since they're actually cheaper than new ones most of the time. The thin stamp era As are usually pretty inexpensive and abundant.
I agree, especially if you can find one that has a well-aged patina. Whether a cymbal leans toward sounding more dark or bright overall matters far less than how well the blend is between the sounds it produces. My favorite cymbals make great-sounding notes regardless of how soft, heavy, fast, or slow I hit them. I had an old A that came with this set I bought off facebook. I loved how versatile it was because I could get a good note anywhere out of that cymbal. Dome, middle, edge, side, fast, slow...
Totally happy with 20" K Heavy and also my Istanbul Xist 21" brilliant. They were not that expensive. Don't overlook the Zildjian A Sweet rides. They are as good as anything.
This is just my opinion as someone who owns a small fortune in drum equipment. While the super rare vintage stuff does sound better, I don’t think hardly any of the super vintage and high end gear is worth what people ask for it. I’m not fond of most of the gear that has come out in the last ten years or so yes I am fond of most vintage findings but I just couldn’t not bring myself to drop $2k on a cymbal or $8k on a drum set even though I can in fact hear and appreciate the difference in sound. I’ve been playing just over 25 years and I still struggle to get myself to spend $3-400 on a used cymbal. I still maintain that vintage As are the best value out there. I own a lot of hi hats. Keropes, Ks, K customs, even some UFIPs but I always go back to a mismatched pair of vintage As that I picked up individually and paired myself. I paid next to nothing for them. I guess value is in the eye of the beholder but I could never convince myself to drop the cash on true classic Ks. Come to think of it, in all my years of playing the only comments I’ve ever got on my cymbals have come from other drummers. 😂
For the young bucks who may not know: there is theory that the more a cymbal is played the tighter the molecules get. That results in a better tone or better sounding cymbal. Just keep the sound groves clean. If you let your cymbal get dirty and finally one day you clean it and get the junk out of the sound groves you will immediatly notice the difference.
just like as I do ....I surely will pay cymbal with fair bargain price, but I much prefer vintage cymbal that not of being hunted by others vintage stuff collectors

Some of the best cymbals I own have no labels or identification on them.
Man, those old K's sound way different then all the modern ones you have, but man, that Funch comes super close!!!!
They all sound great but that Bounce Overhammered is the truth.
I love it.
Hey Tim have you ever checked out the 80's Meinl lines? Volcanic rock? Rock Velvet and the Dragon ranges? They hold up like the paiste rudes etc

I hear you on that! I think it’s mostly in the player. Elvin used to choose those orchestral cymbals. I’m pretty happy with the ones in the video.

I agree 100%. I found a 20" 50s K at a flea market for $25. It didn't sound great, so I sold it on ebay for a crazy price and have never regretted it.

That Artisan sounded increds..
Wow, I really like Funch cymbal. I’ve never heard of them.
Great video!!!
Wow! I didn't realize there so many like minded drum cymbal nerds out there. I've found my people

All beautiful cymbals!

I hear you on that. Those first run 30th’s are incredible! Thanks for your comment!

Thanks! They are single ply texture coated all around. This are my favorite.
@@TimMetz Thanks Tim. Do you have them on the bottoms of your toms?
Yes.., yes they are.
Im probably going to buy the agean treasure jazz cymbal set. I was told by agean and others that they resemble the old k zildjians best on today's market. Any thoughts much appreciated
At this level, every cymbal is a treasure. Luxury however

great drumming btw too!
Same here! Thanks for checking out the video!

Nice cymbals
They all sound great and all have their own character. But I think that 50s A really has a great shimmer.
It sure does! Thanks!
my 70yo A zildjian is for sale, its a rare 26".....
They all sound great to my ears but that has a lot to do with the playing!
You're too kind. Thanks so much!

Vintage all the way 🤘
If you would sell that 50's A, please let me know!

Do you remember the Artisans Sabian buried for a year? Similar theory. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@TimMetz Not familiar with that one.
@@mikekelly9851 Check it out. It was interesting... ruclips.net/video/NvyMFNH13WQ/видео.html
Yes.., yes they are worth it !
Agreed.
All my stuff is old paiste the new stuff sound to sharp to my ears
I really like the new 602s.
👍

How aren´t u in the million subs?
Thanks so much! Someday, it’s good to have goals.
Im not a musician.
I don't even know why this was recommended to me.
To my untrained ear..
They all sound good.
Don't waste the money.
Thanks so much for watching anyway! Lol! So glad you did.
No they aren’t. I’ve been collecting them my whole life - but with similar specs, they are generally nowhere near as good as a new meinl or Istanbul.
But what about Mojo? 😂
I've been buying Istanbul Agop. Love them! So expressive.
Not really.
