I feel like you were instrumental to saving a sound and a cymbal making technique from the passing of time. Now someone knows how to clone it, and it's on the internet. Now we'll have 50 K's forever!!! Literally something to get emotional over.
Just purchased a Funch 22” 2483g Billy Higgins tribute. Incredible cymbal! Just used it on 4 different gigs from holiday background music to a piano trio. This weekend a guitar trio. Absolutely astounding cymbal!
I think the Funch takes it. The stick sound and its separation from the metal sound is just about perfect. I also think the old K has probably settled down so much that the rivets are choking it, and it would benefit from having at least half of them removed.
Again.. bravo for having done this interview video. Lasse definitely has a gift, the talent and a hell of an ear to pick up every little subtilities of a cymbal. There is just this little more "butter" on the Funch that gives it somewhat more life. Definitely two great cymbals and I will be curious to hear how Lasse's will age.
I love the distance in the old K. It speaks so serenely. Only maturity can do that. The funch is a marvel of sound as well with more enthusiasm, still I would take the k ahead of it if given a choice.
I was introduced to the cymbal Masterpieces of Roberto by a Good Friend now departed; he had a collection of some 35 cymbals by the time he passed. I too made a number of Pilgrimages to Lee's house myself and although I HAVE Thinned the Herd, I still have several and this Artist is without a doubt destinated to be on the same level, Congrats to you AND him!! I do feel there's more spread to the Funch instrument and it has a clearly a lower Fundamental pitch as well. How the cymbal feels under the stick is important too but that seems to be on par with the other attributes as you demonstrated it in this video!!
Great and very informative video. It’s fantastic to hear from talented craftsmen who know so much about cymbal making. I always found it interesting that drummers are kind of obsessed with those early Ks in an effort to achieve the sound of the Jazz greats, but using cymbals that have now aged 60 to 70 years since that era. With today’s knowledge (and also exchange of knowledge), techniques and some guys’ craftsmanship, I have the impression there is hardly anything that can’t be achieved in modern cymbals.
Its great ....but its cheating....they did it the hard way....now computers tell you the answers...better tools....not better craftsman. But its progress...
The Funch is significantly better and sounds a lot like the best old K's I've encountered: it has no conflicting tones within it (no "warble") and the separation between the stick click and the underlying wash is just amazing. Thank God there's a source now for what we all thought to be a lost sound!
Hi Tim! I just discovered Funch cymbals the other day through Drum Forum and now I ran across your video. Somebody's trying to tell me something. They are absolutely marvelous sounding cymbals. I just had two K Con MTL's modified by Timothy Roberts and really digging those. It's fun to have something made specifically for yourself. Enjoy!
Like them both, but that old K has such a beautiful, woody, articulate stick sound and it really cuts. I think that you could not only support a small combo, but could drive a big band with that cymbal.
You need BOTH for different sections of each tune. I'm 75 and have been playing drums since I'm 14. Still have an old k with that tone and dazzling wash. Also a 21 Constantinople k that alludes to that wonderful sound. You came across a really fantastic find thanks.
They work so well together! I'm kind of in the same boat in that I've bought a few cymbals from him and all are amazing! But more than that, I special ordered a k dark complex clone from Paul Francis and he hit it out of the park, even though that like your Funch and K, the pitches are different the CHARACTER and ESSENCE of the original is in spades in the clone. It's a great time to be a player, collector or....cymbalholic!
WOW! That was my reaction when you hit that Funch. It's SO close it's nuts, I did NOT expect that!!!! The K has maybe a little more of a "hum" and the Funch is a bit more perfect functionally. I do like the bell of the K better. Also I think it's crazy that cymbals like that came out of a factory. But man, really LOTS of respect for FUNCH!!!! I want one too!!!! Great channel too by the way!
Tim you're still awesome ! remember watching you over a decade ago. amazing cymbals, loved the talk with Funch ! i think the clarity is much better on the Funch, where the K gets a bit washed out quicker
I'm having a bit of a shell shock today because I've played jazz drums for 13 years, and it goes without saying how much I love great cymbals. Until today, when discovered funch cymabls, I did not know it was even possible to make something better than a vintage K. yet somehow he has done the impossible. I am speechless!
I prefer the Funch, lower fundamental pitch. Wonderful job on getting it close, I’ve heard the same model Zildjians sound further apart. I’d put the Funch in the main ride position and the old K left side. 😎
He has captured that sound....The ''K'' is a bit heavier, but they actually work well together. We have Ottaviano cymbals here in Connecticut, and he is making some killer cymbals.
Dope! The Funch has more spread and the K has a trashier attack with a short decay maybe because what you mentioned earlier that the K has more weight in the bow and a more pronounced hook towards the edge.
So frickin’ awesome to see a cymbalsmith talk cymbals. I’ve always loved Zildjians and own several As that sound wonderful. But, the finest sounding hi-hats I’ve ever heard were a pair of really old (OLD!) Ks that one of the directors for our state honor band brought for us to use in the ‘90s. Maybe one day, if I ever break one of my A crashes or get tired of my New Beats, I’ll bite the bullet and pick up a K or two.
I like both cymbals..beautiful smooth wash with good stick definition the Funch captures the essence of the Zildjian a bit different pitch but very close. If I had my eyes closed and didn't know they were different manufacturers..I might think they were both Zildjians the old ZIldjians had a lot of variability within same exact models. Both great cymbals I like the drum kit too. Nice job on that Funch cymbal that's a honey.
The K sounds like it has a higher pitch than the Funch. The Funch at the lower pitch has a little more body than the K. The bell on the Funch is perhaps a little more aggressive than the K?
Now, I presumably did carry over your bias into my listening but what jumps out at me immediately is how much more "alive" the Funch sounds. The Old K, as legendary and beautiful as it is, sounds like ... well, old brittle metal, compared to the Funch. I'm right there with you on this one. Great video and thanks for introducing this cymbal maker to us. You've got a new subscriber!
Yeah, I'm gonna have to go with the new one. Slightly higher pitch. They're both incredible. I love a flat profile small bell cymbal. You have a lovely touch on the instrument too. You're well deserving of those beauties.
wish that you had shown the position and model of overhead mics and the total height of your room. since we are talking bout recorded sound, mics and placement make a huge impact on the overall feel. and this is of importance, as classic jazz styles are in fact highly connected with those classic recordings of the grand ol days. just my 2 ct. anyhow, great comparison between the two, and great playing style! count me interested in the funch brand, now.
The Funch sounds more modern, I guess because it is not as dark. The old K was pretty good as ride but you had to hit it with just the right force and zone, and when that happened I can see how you could swing on that all day.
Wow, i'm amazed how close he got with his copy of the old k . .. it almost sounds identical, just a bit wider . .. and of course, beautiful playing Mr.Metz 🔥
Old cymbal, old ears. Is that why I like the K better? The F is what, almost a whole step higher? It sounds nice and certainly could be used for jazz, but when he touches the K, that's the mellow tone I dig!
They sound very similar, given that the Funch is a tone lower than the K. And both sound great once you start riding them. Very interesting to hear about the lathing process.
To my ears: first, great playing, Tim; K is dryer (age influence?), slightly higher pitched. Wonder how they compare in weight. Also, what happens when you use felted mallets to create a loud flourish (roll)-what are the after tones between the two? Beautiful old and new cymbals! I prefer the new one, too. Thanks very much for sharing.
Stick sound on a good old k is always a few decibels louder or something and markedly tighter than anything modern, for better or worse. This seems to be reflected here. Modern cymbals almost always have a softer feel and vibe. Hard to Use words
I like the sound of the Funch better … it seems extremely musical without the weird overtones of that old k … but it’s funny we keep trying to recreate these mysterious cymbals of old! I’m sure the cost of the funch cymbal is more than the best k copy of the major cymbal companies, but less than buying an old over priced K, that are usually not a really great sounding cymbal, but it’s a K!

There sure is something special about that old K. The Funch makes the perfect companion to it. Not twins, but sisters.
This is a perfect example of standing on the shoulders of giants. He accentuated all the sweet spots of the original.
Well said!
The Funch’s replica sounds extraordinary good. It sounds to me like it “unveils” the cymbal and lets it sings to its full potential. Great work!
The fact that both work well together is a plus!
Totally agree!
I agree! I'd rather have two different pitches that compliment each other than the same exact sound and cymbal.
I feel like you were instrumental to saving a sound and a cymbal making technique from the passing of time. Now someone knows how to clone it, and it's on the internet. Now we'll have 50 K's forever!!! Literally something to get emotional over.
They are not exactly the same pitch but they do share the complexity. Absolutely beautiful
Thanks so much!
Funch sounds fantastic. Plus, I love how Funch creates experiments to capture different players' sounds.
He’s doing amazing work.
Just purchased a Funch 22” 2483g Billy Higgins tribute. Incredible cymbal! Just used it on 4 different gigs from holiday background music to a piano trio. This weekend a guitar trio. Absolutely astounding cymbal!
Congratulations sounds like a beautiful cymbal!
I was thinking this reminded me of Christmas.
I think the Funch takes it. The stick sound and its separation from the metal sound is just about perfect. I also think the old K has probably settled down so much that the rivets are choking it, and it would benefit from having at least half of them removed.
Yeah, I might take the rivets out... another video perhaps?
Typically they put rivets in cymbals that didn’t sound great.
agree, too many rivets for my taste
That Funch left side ride is ridiculous!!! For my ears the left side ride Funch has that sweet dark sound! Love it
I know right!
Again.. bravo for having done this interview video.

The funch is a marvel of sound as well with more enthusiasm, still I would take the k ahead of it if given a choice.
i agree with you. your Funch ride is immaculate. embrace its beauty!
I was introduced to the cymbal Masterpieces of Roberto by a Good Friend now departed; he had a collection of some 35 cymbals by the time he passed. Great Video AND cymbal! I’ve been listening to and have subscribed to the Funch page. He’s really great!
Great and very informative video. It’s fantastic to hear from talented craftsmen who know so much about cymbal making.

Yeah, they have that sound, but seems like you can get it now AND have a connection with the person that made it. Can't be beat.
Its great ....but its cheating....they did it the hard way....now computers tell you the answers...better tools....not better craftsman.
But its progress...
No computers were used in the cloning of this cymbal.
So cool! I’m getting a 2nd 20” delivered on Friday.
Nice! I want to hear it!

In my opinion they're both sonically
matched.

Sounds like the universe is speaking. Lol! Timothy Roberts is doing great work too! Thanks so much for watching!
Got my first Funch just like a month ago and I absolutely love it!
Funch eh, who knew! I certainly didn't, they're definitely now on my cymbal maker radar. What a great job!
Like them both, but that old K has such a beautiful, woody, articulate stick sound and it really cuts. I think that you could not only support a small combo, but could drive a big band with that cymbal.
Wow they sound great together! Like point counter point style. Fantastic playing by the way.
love funch cymbals ! great job , he regenerate mysterious sound of the past , this can't be done without a huge love for music
He’s a great drummer too!
Awesomeness.. I'd love to add a Funch 24" sizzle ride to my collection. Thanks for the video!
Happy Holidays,
George
Nice drumming man, Really love the new one, but like one said below they work so great together
They really do. I’ve used them both on gigs and haven’t been disappointed.
Just found this! Funch crown but K bell for me. I daren't even look at Funch prices right now... Lovely post & lovely playing. Cheers.
Lasse Funch is also a very good drummer!!!!! I know, I have played with him here in Copenhagen.
That’s awesome! I bet he always has amazing cymbals. Lol!
Both beautiful cymbals and a pleasure to hear them.
Beautiful job by Funch. Trying to copy the lathe chatter is definitely next level. Congrats.
They both sound amazing. Together? Oh wow, incredible.

I think the K is more of a "left side ride" since it's washier. That Funch sounds amazing!
I think it's F....n amazing that he can do that good of a replication of the sound.
Same!
I wish all cymbal makers success.
Same! cheers!
Tim you're still awesome ! remember watching you over a decade ago. amazing cymbals, loved the talk with Funch ! i think the clarity is much better on the Funch, where the K gets a bit washed out quicker
Ooof. Has it been that long?
@@TimMetz you’ve aged like fine cheese,…! or is it wine..? lol
Love the new ones sound. Killer tone.
Fantastic work. Gotta say I like the pitch of the K more.

Wow Tim that Funch Cymbal sounds amazing. And than the way you comped it, respect.
I totally agree. Thanks so much!
Beautiful cymbals! Both sound amazing and unique!
Zildjian.
Excellent drumming, by the way.
Thank you!
I think you got two of the killinest Cymbals. Nice vid. Nice playing
two totally different instruments, totally...love your playing Tim. I would keep both on my kit, they complement each other (brother-sister?)

I like both! ( love your playing as well!)

I love your old K but I agree the Funch actually sounds better. Thanks for the video Tim.

Lathe chatter is from over hoging (going to deep) into the work piece with the tool bit beond it ability to cut smoothly at a cirtian RPM
I most definitely prefer The Funch, but they do pair very well. The Funch is the night and the K is the Day
I'm with you. I still love the K though.
A very late night though🌻
I think both cymbals work very well together. That one cymbal has made it 100 years.. and not cracked... Survived tests of time...
Funch are pure butter, best I’ve ever heard I think
The Funch sounds more modern, I guess because it is not as dark. The old K was pretty good as ride but you had to hit it with just the right force and zone, and when that happened I can see how you could swing on that all day.

I can't pick a fav...they compliment each other very well. however, I am more fond of darker sounds. they sound great!
Fair enough!
Both sound epic. No small feat.
The Funch, to my ear, sounds higher. It is a nice contrast to the low of the original K. Together you have a very sweet set of cymbals.
They do work well together.
That was amazing. Gotta get one!
Thanks Scott! We'll do an order soon.
Wonderful indeed!
Thank you!
Yes. This is great. Danish industry and craftsmanship is notoriously excellent.
He really knocked it put of the park with this one.

They sound very similar, given that the Funch is a tone lower than the K. And both sound great once you start riding them.
Very interesting to hear about the lathing process.
Just amazing. Yes, the Funch is that good, that special, it isn't just you.
The Funch is by far the best
Sounds pretty awesome!
I totally agree! Thanks for watching!

I’ll make a short with the rolls. K-1690g F-1722g
I like the Funch better too. They together compliment each other well but if I had to pick one, the Funch would be it.
Thank you! That's why it is always in my cymbal bag. Don't like playing gigs without it anymore.
Tim, you sound great playing them. The old K is wonderful but I think I like the Funch even more than the K. Either one would be great on a gig.
Thanks so much!
They both sound awesome. The F is a bit lower than the K. Again, both are awesome.
Totally agree. Thanks for watching!
They both sound so good. What are the weights?
