It's no secret that we love the VW Golf R, but there's got to be something we don't like. So we've tried really hard to come up with three things that we hate about the 2018 Golf R.

As a OCD mad person, I hate how the carbon on the exhaust builds uneven from the flaps!

I actually love these Estates generally considering getting one as my next car over the hatchback
My biggest gripe is that there is no manual gearbox available on the R estate although it’s available on the hatch. Is the estate not on the same running gear, should be easy to produce a three pedal modal.
I'm sure it comes down to sales at the end of the day - if manual sales have been low for the estate in the past, they've probably limited what transmissions they have for that model.
Agree about the lights, no problem with the dash but I do prefer the mk7 analog dials.

I agree about the rear lights but no problems with the dash top. I think they could have done even more with the active dashboard but VAG need to maintain the differential with Audi.

The estate is perfect for people who want a hot hatch but also have responsibilities 😉

The bag hooks in the boot. Have you tried to keep something on them! The ones in the back of the boot are fine but the near conicle ones where the seat releases are, are a joke
Yes Paul tried hanging shirts behind the drivers seat and it soon fell off!
I hate the small rear spoiler ... can you get an extended one ??? Other than that mega daily all rounder
Doesn't look like this is an optional extra! Looks like it'd have to be a 3rd party fitting!

I agree about the rear tail lights. There isnt much you can do about the piano finish it gets dirty and dusty fast but brilliant clean. I keep a microfibre cloth in the car or a soft brush and use it when parked. I dont know much about the difference between the Audi S3 Dash and Golf R 7.5 but I think the dials are small enough would like them smaller. Are there other features the Audi dash has you know off otherwise I can live with that. I actually like the top of the dash its premium soft rubber. Hard to clean unless with a damp cloth. Its soft on the touch compared to hards plastics. What did you expect heavy leather? The other complaint I would have is you still have the Caldiz wheels off the Old Model here in Australia. My new one has the Speilbergs which suit the New angle lights. Do you have the new lights on the front? Cheers enjoy contact me for some tips re power :) or doesnt RUclips allow PM anymore?

Do you guys get the Google Aerth maps on the Digital Display like on the Audi. I dont see them on my 7.5 Golf R?
If you upgrade to the Discover Nav Pro you will get 3D maps (which I think uses Google earth). You don't get this on the standard Discover Nav.
We get the Dis Nav 9.2 in Australia but cant see them , Its Joel says he gets em on Carplay Google maybe :) they come stock on Audi S3 :)

they come pretty much loaded here with 7 speed (DGSG option)

For the dashboard: you said the nost important... It's still a golf... If you want a better dashboard get a passat or a phaeton(never get an arteon; it is shit)

It is shame not to have these 3 missing on gulf estate. I do not like even middle of steering with logo .
The satnav display is too small you mean? When I hit the OK button on the steering wheel (having a hatch though), both dials shrink giving more room for the map. Still too small?
Compared to the Audi Virtual Cockpit yes it's tiny! On Audi, the map almost fills the whole screen

Yes the dials shrink and on the Audi they shrink a lot more
Soft rev limit, WHY?
The AID is a bit 2D for me. I have it on my R, but VW could have made it so much better. There’s wasted space between the dials where you can only have 1 piece of information displayed when there’s space for more! Of course the mark 8’s AID will be better and VW will encourage us to upgrade 😂

what about the fake exhausts on the estate unlike the hatch not sure if this carried over from the mk7
From Canada, three ‘dislikes’ ie nits to pick:
1. No test drives allowed even for serious customers. Do I have to blow a sales rep to give you $45,000? Ridiculous. Makes me more interested in a competitor, and is a bad taste to some of your best customers.
2. Fuel economy - a real eco mode for long road trips would add significant value to the R but of course it’s carrying around much more kit with the Haldex. It just seems like VW engineers gave up on this partway through.
3. Agree more could be done at this price level to make the interior stand out, but I like the durability of the pebbled dash in my 2012. I’d like a cloth option seat as leather is uncomfortable to me and takes more upkeep.
Something else VW could do to improve value would be to offer more wheel and tire options at low prices with a purchase. We have to have winter tyres by law here (and I’m a fan of that law), but the dealer only offers summer performance tyres stock and one type of winter tyre (when I want better....etc). So grateful that the Pretoria rims are stock now here as well.

Considering the Estate is more than the Hatch it really looses out with not having the dynamic indicators and the cheap fake not connected quad exhaust. Having test driven an R at the weekend I agree its a great car but for the price I agree the interior finish is just not special enough. Considering the price puts it up against 340I M sport Estates the interior feel of the BMW is way nicer. Finally the VW virtual cockpit agreed you should be able to have the full sat nav but more than that you should be able to configure an R mode (like with the S4) with the rev counter sitting in the middle.
tmitch45 The exhaust is attached as far as a I can tell. BMW 340i touring is a great (and rare) car but at £43k not a competitor in my view.
I'm sure the exhausts aren't connected look at this at 1:44 onwards unless its changed with the new 7.5 Golf R. ruclips.net/video/nABweEwtDRc/видео.html. Price wise depending on spec of both the Golf R and a 340I they are much closer in price than you think. Pre-reg new 340I's are cheaper than you think and on Autotrader there are Golf Rs up around the £36-£41K mark.
Watched the video. Maybe the 7.5 differs. I quickly made a short video of my connected pipes (!) ruclips.net/video/shz1yFvp2BY/видео.html I had a 320D before the GolfR and it is a well finished car but I don't feel the difference is huge. The other factor (for me at least) is the DSG gearbox of which I am a big fan - makes the performance very accessible. (and 4wd)
Yes the DSG is great I loved it in the car I tested on Sat! I also love the 4wd on the R it just feels more connected and safer. Having owned the 320D and the R estate do you think there is much difference size wise? Not driven the 340 touring but my instict tells me the golf estate is a bit smaller?
Watched the video = interesting! I'm assuming yours is the Golf R Estate 7.5? Maybe they listened to peoples complaints and changed it for the 7.5 edition. Thanks for the video mate

Pete Cotter it sounds a million times better and I’ve just ordered the new jcw clubman, which is already better than the golf r. The golf r is a boring, predictable car which is absolutely everywhere.

I couldn't agree more about the dynamic rears. If the hatch gets them standard so should the estate. That would put me off ordering an estate for this single fact alone. As for the interior gripes you have they really wouldn't bother me in the slightest.
Why? You can't see them when you are driving and are you really that sad to try and show off to other people with your indicators?? Sheesh, how pathetic can you get??
