I have a small black n white pencil drawing etched by a special 150 line duo-tone process.and its signed.Original date was 1893. Is framed but small redone in 1972. I may have it appraised. Would you have an ideal on its value? Im giving it to my granddaughter when it sells.
Dear Sir - You are an amazing man. Trump or Biden haven't sent me a 2,000 dollar checks, yet you've done it twice since I started watching your shows. You have my vote in 2024. Your BOLO advice, hands down, is the finest on RUclips. A freakin' Harvard education in "Smalls". You are the man! Your "Marbles" episode from a couple of years back? Concise and brilliant. Anyone with energy and an artistic eye who watches your episodes will change their lives. You are a vibrant and powerful force.
Out of all the reselling content creators I’ve seen on RUclips, you provide, by far, the most valuable comprehensive material that is both digestible and and succinct. It’s clear that you plan ahead and prepare. You certainly know your stuff and understand how to communicate well.
I really love engravings. A lot of them also have depressed paper borders from the metal etched plate being pressed into the fresh paper. In my opinion, engravings are early forms of photography. Some of the earliest engravings were done to show others what certain animals looked like from other countries, or what certain flower types looked like. (Curtis Botanicals). Many early maps of the US were also engraved. The USGS used engravings to show early Railroad routes and types of tools and trains in use. This is a large diverse area of collecting and it is amazing!
Simply looking for the plate marks around the edges of the image is a quick way. Should be a little ledge where the paper laid over the engraved plate.
You always seem to sell something I didn’t even know existed. I’m working through my buttons right now after seeing your vid about buttons, and I studied your store buttons. Thanks for sharing.
I’ll add this as part of my continuing education. Just like any profession, the more you know, the more valuable you become. I can’t wait until the Master Class starts. Can decide what to write my thesis on. But I’ll work on it. Thanks again Don. More great info.
Hey I just found your site yesterday and I've watched at least 10 different ones now. It's very informative very interesting and very helpful. I've been selling a lot of my old rock 'n' roll memorabilia and I have tons of it but I have a lot of other stuff and now inspired to just get rid of it I'm old and no kids to dump it off on thanks again
Thank you again for superb content, seeking from the heart to help other people like you. That is a true asset. In the fall I discovered a mid 19th Century litho from Emile Lasalle at one of my favorite flea markets. A handcolored, large sized work of a boy with a falcon. I kept for myself!! Hand signed.
How about those that are already framed behind glass ? Thrift shops etc. A pair of magnifier lens should tell you as the ink shows up 3 dimentional and you see a plate impression
Or get a good magnifying lupe, and look at the surface - it applies to any artwork if in doubt about what you’re looking at, you can see much more easily. I always carry a lupe when I go thrifting.
Many early engravings wont have much raised ink do to the paper, and etc. So even with a loupe it may not be visible, but with a crayon it pretty much always shows if it's a real one or not.
@@TheAuctionProfessor But with the loupe, won't you see the dots of a lithograph printing and be able to tell the difference that way? No dots (solid color) means it's an engraving?
I am wondering how to find out what the engravings are worth. Some shown for sale were going for hundreds while others were going for thousands.... Is there a "source" you use to estimate their value?
I am new at this, I go out and spend money buying great items but it seems people just minimize the price by lowering it to bare minimum. I don’t understand how he makes money because it seems the item he says sells for high profit are very common on Ebay. Please teach me because I really want to learn. I am here to stay.
From what I know he has a large quanity of items up online. The fact that he has so much quantity up means that even if some take a year or more to sell higher priced items, many of these items are always selling.
I believe I have an actual metal plate of a somewhat famous art piece. I have taken it to 2 art framers with no luck on info. What would you suggest my next step should be? 🙏😊 I love your channel!!
Wow that's an old magazine I would tend to probably say no but I wouldn't be sure I know that it costs a lot more to do this so a good book would have them for sure but a magazine that's a good question I wonder
I started looking for old magazines because the professor talked about old ad clips. I've sold some old Pepsi-Cola clips from some 1940's magazines for between $11 and $15. I found the Cosmo yesterday and another magazine from 1905
Once you get used to it you can spot them quite easily the way there pressed in the way they feel if your eyes are good you can spot them quite easily it doesn't take a lot of experience I mean I guess maybe I'm used to it but you can see the real thing from regular print or litho
I didn't see the link for the crayon shading tool. I tried finding that on eBay and Amazon but it must be called something else. Please send the link if possible. Thanks
Only an engraving will produce any form of results. If it's not an engraving nothing will be transferred to the paper. There would be nothing to show if it's not a engraving.
Yes I have a picture of Rodger Harris and Mickey mantis standing in a I think it's a baseball field somewhere there's a bleachers in the back do you know if it would be worth any money on their suits it has a NY and Mickey's holding a glove and Paris is standing beside him is this picture valuable well I don't know if it's a picture or if it's a poster iv had it for at least 30 years hanging on my wall. There's a signature on it from both of them on the top

You continue to earn the title “Professor” - thanks Don. Terrific and simple technique!
Don your videos are the best!!! I have learned so much from your channel when looking for items to sell on eBay
Simply looking for the plate marks around the edges of the image is a quick way. Should be a little ledge where the paper laid over the engraved plate.
Thanks, like many of your videos I have learned something new, even though I've been dealing in 'junk" since the 1970's
Excellent tip! I've always wondered how to tell the difference if it couldn't be easily felt. Thanks 👍
You are cherished, Don!!
You always seem to sell something I didn’t even know existed. I’m working through my buttons right now after seeing your vid about buttons, and I studied your store buttons. Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant!
Enlightening! Thank you!💃

This information is so amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Don for the informative video and great lesson. It will definitely help me figure out whether some of my back stock is worth listing.
These engravings are awesome.
EXCELLENT info!! TY so much, you're the best 👍❤️
Nice. I will get the holder. Can't imagine my thumbnail going through the paper damaging image. Cheers Don, Maurice
Thank you Don. I guess I need a crayon holder.
Where do I purchase crayon holder ?
Great tip thanks Don. Question, do you indicate in your listings this authentication method for buyers?

Am going to watch your vintage paper episode. Screw Colbert or Kimmel.
Learning alot. Thanks Professor!
Thanks for sharing this, will definitely come in handy knowing this technique.
Great stuff, as usual. Thanks.
Unbelievable! You are a real Professor !
Great Love your videos !!!
Great info

Thank you! Now I have to take some out of frames to check them out!
We’re you a professor in another life? Thank you for all that you share.
Excellent tip. Also, try a fat preschool crayon. Easier to gokd. Brilliant as usual, Dr. Don. Thx!!!!
And it's very nice too dhksj
Great information, Don. I'm having a terrible time finding the type of tracing paper you recommended. Can you drop a link? Thanks.
Hi! Great information! What is the best way to tell if it is a real autograph signature of someone? Thanks so much

Yes like they are selling hologram marvel etc cards for $1
The last time someone lowballed me, I countered offered with $1. below my asking asking price. She went away.
I got some 1890 1910 women's journal magazines and more. Are they sellable
I have several of those prints😮
I know they are over 100 years old.
Is the onion paper in books of illustrations there to protect the engraving?
great info. But what does happen if you do this procedure with a print?
Grear information. I can't find that crayon holder. What is the name of the holder?
ty
I believe I have an actual metal plate of a somewhat famous art piece. I have taken it to 2 art framers with no luck on info. What would you suggest my next step should be? 🙏😊 I love your channel!!
Hi Don: What postcard scanner do you use?
What's the holder called? Where do you find it?
Do you take engravings out of books?
That one with the anvil looks pretty "valuable" to me, I wouldn't sell that I would maybe hike the price way up, or just show it but not for sale etc.
Learning a lot from you. Would 1895 Cosmopolitan Magazines have anything like this?
Wow that's an old magazine I would tend to probably say no but I wouldn't be sure I know that it costs a lot more to do this so a good book would have them for sure but a magazine that's a good question I wonder

"Fresh snack".. today a fresh snack is some fruit slices :D
I didn't see the link for the crayon shading tool. I tried finding that on eBay and Amazon but it must be called something else. Please send the link if possible. Thanks
Are these usually in frames when you find them?
Can you show what it looks like on a lithograph?
Only an engraving will produce any form of results. If it's not an engraving nothing will be transferred to the paper. There would be nothing to show if it's not a engraving.
The black crayon and clip? Thank you. Always kind of fingered it....pencil...never 100% sure. Sold cheap. Nevermore...nevermore.
It's like going to class and coming out a rhode scholar
Yes I have a picture of Rodger Harris and Mickey mantis standing in a I think it's a baseball field somewhere there's a bleachers in the back do you know if it would be worth any money on their suits it has a NY and Mickey's holding a glove and Paris is standing beside him is this picture valuable well I don't know if it's a picture or if it's a poster iv had it for at least 30 years hanging on my wall. 👍✌🤘
It would have helped if you would have shown one that was not a true engraving using your process.

Great tip! Thanks!
