Fallout 4 - Sanctuary Hills Settlement Build Tour

  • This is a settlement build tour at Sanctuary Hills from my most recent lightly modded Fallout 4 playthrough, using only vanilla and DLC objects (with a little help from Place Everywhere).
    This is a Minuteman protected farming and trading settlement. I wanted to give the impression that this was a well-established settlement that has grown over time, with the original settlers fixing up and building around the ruined houses then slowly expanding towards the river.
    The settlement features a covered marketplace, a small hotel and bar, a medical centre providing a chemist and a place to treat patients, a larger bar and restaurant, and a smaller marketplace setup in the cul-de-sac. The riverside field area houses newcomers to the settlement with additional housing, a Brahmin pen, generator shed, and fishing docks and water pumps.
    I found this build a challenge and had been putting it off for a while as I dont enjoy trying to fill large spaces. I would have liked to have added a little more decoration, but had to stop due to performance issues. Also noticed a few minor errors which I’ll correct before releasing a blueprint, but overall really happy with how this ended up (and more so now that its finally done!) 😀

    When most people build in Vanilla, they tend to forget their in a wasteland and make something which feels out of place. You on the other hand make structures that feel real with lore and look absolutely amazing. Excellent work on

      "They still look like something you'd expect in a wasteland" not for long, if this game followed the laws of physics then a handful of people with explosive weaponry will easily destroy this """settlement""" in moments 😂😂😂. If you want to create an actual settlement where people will be safe then you're better off using concrete or other tough materials for building materials.

    • @Allegro_Giusto
      @Allegro_Giusto 2 месяца назад +3

      @@keztannis6848Relax you’re talking about a game where enemies have mini nukes and missiles and can apply what you said to any material. No material is defending that. The wood and shacks are cheaper and quicker to build/repair among homeless settlers if we should apply any logic and rationalism. It’s not to do with physics but what is likely to built amongst homeless who don’t have the skills to build more complicated structure. This is a very good settlement

    Watching this a year later and I gotta agree with the comments, this build is insanely good. It stands out from other settlement builders because it actually looks like this could be a town someone would visit a few years post-fallout 4. My only, albiet minor, gripe is that the old houses dont have their ceilings fixed. The Floridian in me cannot stop worrying about the rain lol. But seriously, amazing job on this one. When I build up sanctuary or try to I like to think of it as the “capital” of the my settlements. I try to keep a wasteland scrappy feel with my settlements but also with a little bit more if that makes sense? @@FiddleflapsVids Nice work man. Subscribed and will be watching your other builds. I watch a lot of F4 build video's. No idea why I haven't seen your channel before.
      I have a question though. Well two actually.
      1) Sometimes it's easy to tell if someone is rebuilding something for the camera that they already made, or if they are trying stuff out and make a lot of mistakes on the way.
      I honestly can't tell with your videos. You've either got a great memory or you just don't make mistakes. Which is it? 🤔
      2) Do you not suffer from your brain screaming when you build something and the plants are sticking through it? I couldn't take it anymore and as I don't want to use a scrapper mod I just try to avoid those areas, make sure I'm building over the top of them, or put something big over them like a Nuka Cola machine or something.

      @@Wolfways Hope you enjoy checking out some of the other builds and thanks for the sub 👍😁
      1) All my build vids are pre-planned and practiced a few times before I record. For each settlement I always build a ‘rough’ version first, then rebuild it for the build vids and finished tour.
      2) Sort of 😉😆. Where possible I try to build around the various plants and shrubs that can’t scrapped, and it’s something I have been doing more when planning my more recent builds.
      Sometimes I feel it can even look quite good, and give an overgrown run down look. Of course I would prefer to be able to remove them but also choose not to use scrapping mods, and so have got quite good at just mentally blocking them out 😅.

I can imagine trying to make this using Sim Settlements interior plots for some of it, because I'm still not good with the tedium of decor, as much as I love it. I also use Whisper's mods: Raze and Clean My Settlement (since they don't break anything) because uhh, just no to the trash and leaves inside my houses. Come on settlers, really? Totally agree with your thoughts on the leaves and trash piles in this (and other settlements) and drives me nuts. Would loved to have been able to clean up some places (especially the living areas), but really like being able to release blueprints that are mod requirement free. Thankfully people can always use a scrapping mod of their choice after importing the settlement, if they feel the need to do some much needed spring cleaning 🧹.

      @@FiddleflapsVids totally agree, it's always such a nice find to discover great builds like this that don't require mods, but have to admit that that stuff triggers me LOL. If I am really in the mood to build from scratch (read: not using Sim Settlements) I'll use mods like I mentioned and also CREative Clutter, which has prebuilt bunches of clutter that really cut down on the number of items placed and provide that lived in, cluttered feel. This is more for others that may not know about those mods. Frogprincess and the others involved in the CREative mods are such good people too. They also make Do it Yourshelf, a great companion mod.

      I have used Creative Clutter and Do It Yourshelf in the past and loved them. Only problem was I found it too easy to over decorate, and quickly found myself wondering what had happened to my frame rate. Not a fault on the mods part, will just need to learn a little self-restraint if I start to use them again for modded builds 🤣

    Ok so I just started a new playthrough and just had the opportunity to lay down your Sanctuary blueprint and I am impressed, nicely done and laid out, I can only imagine how long it must have taken to export 5k items much less 2k because I have to flip over to Hulu when I start an over 2k export. Haha
    Thanks for your kind words over on my Finch farm tube, as I said I learned from the best :) you still have the edge when it comes to decoration's.
    I also wanted to add that I had been leaving the doors off of my buildings as I saw no point in them since they are always left open and most of the time are in the way being left open but after laying down your sanctuary blueprint and walking through it, the doors do seem to add a nice element so I'm going to start adding them.

    • @FiddleflapsVids
      @FiddleflapsVids  2 года назад

      Exporting this did take quite a while (around 30 mins), and multiple attempts as I kept finding details I had forgot to link to the workshop before exporting - got there in the end though! Agree that settlers always leaving doors open is a pain, but where it’s possible to place them I feel they are a needed detail.

      Workshop Plus is fantastic and has many features I enjoyed using (Fly Mode, Layers, Auto Closing doors). One of my goals when I started this series was to build settlements that would load and function in a pure vanilla game, as I sometimes like to go back to old saves to look (and sometimes laugh) at what I had built. The minor issue I found is my settlers would disappear if I disabled the mod. So this is the (admittedly slightly strange) reason that I am not using it.

    I know im a whole year late so theres a chance you wont even see this comment but this build is insane! im a new fallout 4 player and ive been really brought in by what you can n cant do in a settlement. I hope you don't mind me taking some inspiration from your builds (having the electricity wired to the roof has absolutely changed the way my houses are going to look lmao i hated the look of wiring through the house)

      Great to hear you liked then build, many thanks! When I first starting trying to improve my settlements I learned a lot from watching how others had built theirs, and so upload these vids in the hopes that they might be of some use or provide ideas for others. So please feel free to use anything you like from the vid in your own builds, its what they are for 😁👍.

    Im new to modding and i really want to use this blueprint. Do i wait to bring Preston's people there or or do i install this first? Also should i scrap the collapsed houses first?

    • @FiddleflapsVids
      @FiddleflapsVids  4 месяца назад +1

      You can import this blueprint either before or after Preston and his gang arrives, typically any blueprint can be imported once a settlement has been unlocked and you are able to access the build menu. Before importing this you will need to scrap everything that can normally be removed (don’t use any scrapping mods).

    Never could get into settlement building. Didn’t understand why post apocalypse people couldn’t pick up a broom.

      It always made me wonder how settlers could craft laser turrets or even fusion generators out of literal scrap, yet could not work out how a broom functions 🤣.

    I loved your Sanctuary! Really original. But let me ask you a question: how is your creative process? Do you plan anything or just go building what is on your mind?

    • @FiddleflapsVids
      @FiddleflapsVids  4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks! I guess I would class my build process as a lot of trial and error 😅. I typically have no idea what a settlement is going to look like when I start building, and usually just start throwing pieces together to see what sticks. Sometimes this works out great but more often than not I’ll build and then tear down structures multiple times until I get something I am happy with.
      It’s also not uncommon for me to get halfway through a build only to completely restart it, often taking elements I felt worked and trying a different approach for the areas and structures I felt did not quite look right.

      @@FiddleflapsVids Ah, so you have a lot of patience. I must learn that. I'm usually very eager to see the end and this end up in class C buildings. I'm not very confortable with building, but well, I'm a newbie.

      @@paulogabriel1636 When I first started to try and improve my building I found starting small really helped out. Rather than trying to build whole settlements I practiced making simple shacks, swapping out materials to see what pieces worked well with others.
      Once comfortable with that I started building variations of those shacks adding extra rooms or floors, which helped me build a set of structures that I could place and further customise in any settlement.
      Would also recommend stating out at one of the smaller locations before trying to tackle some of the larger ones like Sanctuary or Starlight. Getting a couple of smaller completed detailed builds really helps to boost your confidence, and will really help when it comes time to try and fill out those larger locations 👍😁.

    • @FiddleflapsVids
      @FiddleflapsVids  3 месяца назад +1

      I stopped ‘playing’ this save a long time ago and just use it for building now, as such I use console commands to add the various junk items I use for decoration and have batch file set up for various categories. The normal method would be to clear locations collecting junk and waiting for them to reset (Corvega and Federal Ration Stockpile are two great locations), and the various general traders can also be a good source of items.
