Well then again,It’s stark contrast as in the early 60s music had a certain innocence to it. Almost like the stars looked clean and acted clean, 10 years later sex, drugs and rock n roll lifestyle was the normal.
Thanks a million for this show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Carl was so awesome.....perfect voice and superb guitar player. He was no shredding lead player but he knew every single chord there is and could play them in any inversion. A master, much like his oldest brother.
I know Mike catches a lot of hell (rightfully so), but man, he's such a character in this clip! That goofy hat & beard, and the way he dances. It's pretty funny.
I'm shocked they were still doing this song in 1971! Wasn't this when they were trying to be relevant with the hippie crowd, and change their name to "Beach" or something like that, and play more progressive music with a deeper meaning? There again, the song was only 7 years old at this point so I guess it wasn't that much of a relic of the past. But still--Western culture changed A LOT in those 7 short years!
Clearly you habvernt seen or heard the 1978 Melbourne show where Carl and Brian snorted some bad heroin beforehand. Carl also added a couple of Maitais and a Valium on top of it. It was a fucking mess of a show!!!
I have, in fact, watched the Melbourne show. Highly doubt Brian was there though in 78. But you are right, Carl was not in fine form. However at this post Brian, pre-Flame era....Carl held things together.
Bruce Johnston(who joined the band initially as Brian’s replacement on tour to sing his parts and play bass in 1964, but in 1966 became a full time member of the band) is singing it but it’s just very quiet in the mix. You can here it semi-clearly when he sings “I get around” but you can’t hear the rest of it.
The below parts missing in the live are essential for this song.... I get around ... From town to town ... I'm a real cool head ... I'm making real good bread ...
Meanwhile, the later Live at Knebworth from 1980 has ten times more energy and power, and they're actually in key. This has all the markings of having smoked many spliffs before going on stage..
its amazing that in seven years beach boys went from your boys next door to your local drugdealers next door 😉 i say this with respect since i love their music
Even in the horrible hippie days of the late 1960s ... early 1970s, when 30 minute drum solos were applauded, nothing, but nothing could still energize a crowd like a great BB song. Even a hippie audience.
No. Dennis tore tendons in his hand by punching a glass door while in a drunken stupor in 69 or 70. He is on the far left stage here, playing keyboards. There is a clip of Dennis at this same concert, playing keyboards on FOREVER. Also, Dennis did play keys on HMR in the early seventies. He went back to drumming in the mid 1970s
Seriously? Did NOBODY even attempt to cover Brian's major falsetto melody part in this song??? Weird. I wouldn't expect my local bar band to think they could get away with doing this song without that part!
WTF... Brian Wilson's falsetto part makes the fucking song. I know he had stopped touring with the Beach Boys by this point, but they should've had SOMEBODY cover it. IT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT PART!!!
The Beach Boys was a group effort not a one man band and never revolved around any one member! They all made it great. Brian's problems kept him from touring and you can't expect the Beach Boys to have ended because he wasn't there!
Actually Al pulls his own guitar over as he walks away. The lead is caught round his leg, watch how he stumbles. Mike just happened to be closest as it went over. I like this performance.
To me this song doesn't work without the high harmonies. But I can see why The Beach Boys altered the song somewhat considering they were trying to be taken more seriously with the hippies.
I followed the BBs in the 60, 70s, 80s, 90, and 2000s. They were at their best in the 60s....just the five of them in stripe shirts. This is a crap version of a great song...I Get Around. They were in the funk of the 70s. Not a good decade for them as some fans think.
I curse my 10-year-old self for not having had the presence of mind to sneak out of my house in Brooklyn and take the subway to Central Park to see this show.
I can see why this was missing for years. This Live version sucks major wind. Mike Love should have stayed home to pound some more Peyote. Sad. It was the Dismal tide. I could never get behind Mike Love's version of "Cool". I would have avoided him at Harvey's Broiler in Downey. Now, he's out there, like a thief in the night, doing One Nighter's, calling himself The Beach Boys. Sad. The Dismal tide.
A lead singer is useless when literally every other member of the band blows him out of the water on vocals. Al could have sung any Mike Love lead and it would have only sounded much better.
Well, it's just one of those things that happens. Mike's voice isn't "great," but he forged THE sound on all the hits he had with the group. On the other hand of the spectrum, The Lovin' Spoonful still exists today, but without John Sebastian. Granted, Sebastian wrote 'em all, but he wasn't really the best singer in the group. The best voice was Joe Butler, the drummer, who now fronts the band, and does a real nice job. If the Beach Boys were going to replace Mike having Al do his parts, it would have had to been done by 1970 or so.
Aside from the fact that he helped Brian write the lyrics to several good hits. That is backed up by other Beach Boys too. People like to discredit him as much as they can because they read false info about him and take it for the truth. Sad. He sings the deep parts and Brian Wilson has called him one of rock n rolls greatest singers. Look it up if you don't buy it. Rolling Stones
I think Mike is a parasite, that slowed down and belittled Brian Wilson's creativity (Pet Sounds), but then sued him for co-authorship of several songs and overcame the group's name.
Amazing this song was considered an ‘oldie’ seven years after being released.
i know lmao... what a time in music
Well then again,It’s stark contrast as in the early 60s music had a certain innocence to it. Almost like the stars looked clean and acted clean, 10 years later sex, drugs and rock n roll lifestyle was the normal.
Ask your kids or grandkids how old a song has to be to be considered old, LOL.
@kevinrayonflores2212 it would be like saying something from 2017 is an oldie 😅
I was shocked when U2 was played on an oldies station! But I guess that song was already 30 years old at the time! lol
Miss Brian's falsetto. Not the same without it.
the missing Brian falsetto shows how his voice lifted good songs to transcendent
When they played California Girls on Jack Benny Hour in. 1965 all the girls went crazy when Brian sang.
It looked like Bruce Johnstone was singing the falsetto but his mike wasn't working. The vocal mix was also uneven.
Question. When did the Beach Boys turn into Lynrd Skynrd? LOL!
1971
sea at beach night
When brian was in bed apparently
gotta love hippie era Beach Boys doin' their surfer era classics.
The hippie era was their downfall. It was also the down fall of the beatles.
They didn't do Monterey pop
Jose Belindo not doing Monterey pop really did them in. Oh well, hopefully lesson learned.
They did ok at the Fillmore East
No way! That era is what helped regain them some credibility and put them back on the road to success.
Thanks a million for this show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Carl was so awesome.....perfect voice and superb guitar player. He was no shredding lead player but he knew every single chord there is and could play them in any inversion. A master, much like his oldest brother.
Warren Hawk i totally agree
and 52 years later, Mike Love is still rocking and getting around
Beach Boys 1971: "Do you want an oldie? "
Me 2019: OMFG
Funny that this was considered an oldie as the song was only 7 years old.
1971 was such a radically different time from 1964. It was a time that moved incredibly fast.
Dang, Brian's missing falsetto makes this song so much worse..
+Jarrod Castillo I think Brian Johnston is singing it, its just really really quiet in the mix
Motohiro Sato where is Brian in the song anyway
In bed.
@@kidamathias Brian Johnston of AC/DC? Lol. You mean Bruce Johnston.
Jarrod Castillo I guess Carl was protesting by not singing it
I know Mike catches a lot of hell (rightfully so), but man, he's such a character in this clip! That goofy hat & beard, and the way he dances. It's pretty funny.
I guess it was not suppose to be funny, but he sure is.... full of himself that is. What a douche.
He gets way too much hate in my opinion, he was the only alpha male in a group of beta men so it makes sense...
@@KingpinTBM tell that to Brian.
Met him in Person 5 Years ago and he definitely lived up to his reputation as a narcissist Asshole !
@@reggiehammer8170 What happened?
Since 1961 still AWESOME nowadays

Its not just his voice. It's his entire part. Nobody even attempted to cover it? Like... it wasn't super important to the song? WTF?!?!?!
@@davecarsley8773 Bruce does it, but it's too low in the mix

This sounds like a music box version of I get around But you need the high part that Brian sings *I’m a reeeeel cool heeeead*
Carl, however, is in fine form (as usual).
Clearly you habvernt seen or heard the 1978 Melbourne show where Carl and Brian snorted some bad heroin beforehand. Carl also added a couple of Maitais and a Valium on top of it. It was a fucking mess of a show!!!

Brian is there.
You're right. I stand corrected, sir.
Carl is entitled to have an occasional bad performance he was normally brilliant
In 1964 they looked like a bunch of young geeks, in 1971 they looked like a bunch of homeless hippies. Talk about changing with the times.
Well put.
Really misses Brian's vocal...
John Reagan yeah because if you notice they didn't ever say the front lyrics from town to town and I making real good bread those lyrics are missing
Bruce Johnston(who joined the band initially as Brian’s replacement on tour to sing his parts and play bass in 1964, but in 1966 became a full time member of the band) is singing it but it’s just very quiet in the mix. party pets
The Stoned Boys.. 'I Get Around' (eventually) to the nearest munchie house.. YEH MAN
Brian made this song what it was. I don't want to hear my favorite song like this X_X
The funny thing is that it sounds like you can very faintly hear Brain doing the falsetto, but no it's just a myth
Actually it’s true because Bruce Johnston (the bass player in the blue shirt) is singing it but it’s extremely mixed down
It might be Bruce

There maybe a falsetto if you listen close. Best Mike Love look
Cool 😀.
mike love blows eternally.. he started the song flat and it goes downhill from there..
Check out Greg Brady in the audience for their version of Okie from Muskogee
Tremendously great. One of the coolest guitar solos in surf music?

Brian Wilson the genius behind The Beach Boys. And the greatest voice.
Myk glove. Kills every single solitary performance.

“Horrible hippie days” pretty sure The Beach Boys embraced the hippie era pretty damn artistically well.
That scarecrow is freaking me out.
Is it Dennis on drums ?

This iteration of the Beach Boys....somehow seems wrong playing that song. Agreed, falsetto is definitely missing.
without brian there was no beach boys
The Beach Boys was a group effort not a one man band and never revolved around any one member! They all made it great. Brian's problems kept him from touring and you can't expect the Beach Boys to have ended because he wasn't there!
"never revolved around any one member!" - that may be the most ill-conceived comment ever made in the Beach Boy universe.
Like the Doors without Morrison.
Brian Wilson cultists weird me out. You guys are fucking disturbing.
Hey… is that Paul Simon at 1:28?
And DB Love kicks over Al's guitar as he sashays off stage.
Actually Al pulls his own guitar over as he walks away. The lead is caught round his leg, watch how he stumbles. Mike just happened to be closest as it went over. I like this performance.
Ah, you are absolutely correct. I was watching it on a small screen initially.
It's still Mike's fault somehow. It always is.
At 50 second mark is that Walter Becker?
