He actually sat and listened to me babbling about the OU-Nebraska football game played that day.

He's wearing a fine example of one in this video. Carl also used to occasionally refer to himself as "Clem Howdy" Wilson. He above all must have loved the ironic humor of the BB performing this song.

For all the flack Mike Love gets from some Beach Boys fans, he does a very passable vocal here and works the crowd well. It is a simple 2 chord song, with a key change before the "Beads and Roman sandals" line. Easy to sing but you still need to deliver. Respect to Merle Haggard and The Beach Boys. They should have kept it in the set for ever.
