When my wife Marcie's battle with cancer ended and her new home in the Church Triumphant began, I selected this hymn in her memorial service. It's message brought comfort, hope, and promise to all those in our family and those who attended the service. Christ indeed is that firm foundation. Thanks be to God!
+coachrv30 God bless you
Hallelujah. Her sanctification is complete.
Amen. May God continue to heal and encourage you and your family with these words and promises. In Jesus' name, amen. 🙏🏻 Hallelujah! 🙏🏻😄❤️
Andrew Jackson requested this hymn when he had company at his home after his wife Rachel died
How Firm A Foundation opened J. Vernon McGee's radio ministry show Through The Bible. Dr. McGee was the first real Bible teacher I ever listened to when I became a Christian in March 1989. His ministry is still growing as I write this in mid December 2020 and has expanded into over 120 countries though he passed away in 1988. Dr. McGee was revered as a teacher who could make difficult things easy to understand by how he "put the cookies on the bottom shelf so the kiddies could get at them." Looking forward to meeting you in Heaven Dr. McGee and we shall sing How Firm A Foundation together. I thank God's infinite love for giving us a man like Dr. J. Vernon McGee.
The men of Robert E. Lee's army broke into this hymn at his funeral as they remembered it was his favorite hymn.
This hymn is so rich and so encouraging
Amen!🙏🏻🙌🏻
This hymn gave me comfort during difficult times, and still remains as powerful today, and I miss Vernon Magee's radio show

J. Vernon Magee...
No one would be more surprised than John Vernon McGee at the worldwide response to his country preaching, with simple ways and endearing mannerisms. We honor Dr. McGee’s courage to answer God’s call, but we give God the glory for the generations of lives changed through the preaching of His Word.
His greatest compliment
As a student pastor, Dr. McGee's first church sat on a red clay hill in Midway, Georgia. It was there he said he received his greatest compliment: "It was from a country boy wearing high buttoned, yellow shoes. After a morning service he came to speak to me. He groped for words, then blurted out, 'I never knew Jesus was so wonderful!' He started to say more but choked up and hurried out of the church. As I watched him stride across the field, I prayed, 'Oh, God, help me to always preach so that it can be said, I never knew Jesus was so wonderful.'"
Early days
John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904, the son of very poor parents. At age 14, "Vernon" lost his dad to a cotton gin accident and his mother moved him and his sister to Nashville, Tennessee. Through the investment of significant mentors, Vernon was able to attend college and then seminary. After completing his education (earning degrees from Southwestern University in Memphis, Tennessee; Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia; Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas), he was the pastor of churches in Decatur, GA, Nashville, TN, and Cleburne, TX. It was in Cleburne that Vernon met Ruth Inez Jordan and fell in love with her at first sight. He proposed on their second date, and the two married a year later. Eventually, he and Ruth settled in Pasadena, California, where Dr. McGee accepted a pastoral call to the Lincoln Avenue Presbyterian Church. He recalled this period as the happiest in his life, with a young family and a young congregation whom he loved.
The beginning days of Thru the Bible
In 1941, Dr. McGee was persuaded to begin a Sunday radio program, The Open Bible Hour, on just one station. It later became High Noon Bible Class, which laid the foundation for the 1967 launch of Thru the Bible as we know it today. Dr. McGee recorded the “Sunday Sermon” messages from the pulpit of the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles, where he served as pastor from 1949 to 1970.
After cancer surgery in 1965, the doctors gave Dr. McGee six months to live. The Lord gave him 23 more years.
After retiring, Dr. McGee devoted his life to Thru the Bible. On any given day, you’d find him at the Pasadena office with an open Bible on his desk in front of a microphone.
Dr. McGee and the Board of Directors planned in advance that the recorded 5-year program would stay on the air after Dr. McGee’s death. “Just play the tapes until the money runs out,” was Dr. McGee’s directive. On December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
Today, the worldwide work of Thru the Bible continues through a small staff and the prayers and faithful giving of wonderful listeners-committed to keeping the Bible Bus traveling through the whole Word of God until Jesus comes.
Listen to Dr. McGee's sermon, "Remember Jesus Christ"
Dr. McGee's farewell message given from the pulpit of the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles where he served as pastor for 21 years.
This hymn has deep, personal significance for three generations of women in my family. How great are the words (and promises) of God which inspired it.
I wish i could like this song more than once!
This version is awesome! I listen to it the most.
Psalm 33:11
"The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of His heart to all generations."
This hymn honors and glorifies our King & Savior while providing us with hope and reminding us that our trust is in him!!!!
Hallelujah!!!!!
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (August 7), I filled in at a local Lutheran Church. I played this as the Opening Hymn. It is #796 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. You can also sing it to ADESTE FIDELES, which is better known as O, Come, All Ye Faithful.
One of my favorite hymns. I love the part, "...I'll never, no never, no never forsake." The repetition sends chills (nice ones!) up my spine!
Romans 10:17 "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."
I love this song. They did not include the chorus but most people don't sing it with a chorus. Very uplifting.
Thank you for making this. I've heard this song countless times thanks to J. Vernon Magee but couldn't completely understand the lyrics. Today was the first time I've seen them and the impact of it went straight to my heart. I've liked the song since I was a little boy but only now when I'm nearly 40 do I see it. It could not have been at a more appropriate time for the trials I am going through. God is amazing.
Wonderful and amazing. Traditional hymns will always be classics because inspired old times people, touch us in our times and will remain inspiring future generations for ever. Thanks for share this blessing.
I don't like changing the words - "thee" to "you" and "thy" to "your". The replacement words don't fit as well when singing. This hymn, in addition to being an inspiration, is also a work of art. You wouldn't alter poetry - what is this obsession with tinkering with our hymns?
This is a lovely hymn, and a favorite of one of my most admired heroes of all time, General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War. Would that we had such men leading our armies today.
One of my favorite hymns! Shout out to Bible Study Fellowship! where I first heard it!
I looked this song up because I'm reading a book about general Robert E Lee and they sang this song at his funeral. it is a beautiful song. I see now why it was his favorite.
Learned this at chapel during basic training at Fort Jackson. Through the years it was sung at a lot of services at fire bases. Was told it is the unoficial U.S.Army Hym, love it.
Ft. Jackson, Hoo- ah ! Go ARMY !
What an amazing reassurance. God bless
One of my very favorite hymns .. :)
Upliftingly beautiful; Beautifully uplifting.
💚
Written by John Keith in 1787. Amazing song and lyrics for all Christians to remember and sing,
First published in 1787 in a hymnal compiled by John Rippon, a Baptist pastor in England. A great song of praise to our
almighty gracious God in the 18th Century and still a great song of praise for us as believers today.
This is also in the LDS hymnal #85.

This was Gen. Robert E. Lee's favorite hymn and included in his funeral service.
It was also sung at the Presidential funerals of Theodore Roosevelt in 1919 and Woodrow Wilson in 1924.
Eddie Miller also Andrew Jackson
I love this version; great video. Thanks for the lyrics too.
Just awoke with this song on my mind, perhaps dreaming it.
This song always makes me think of The Day After (the 1983 nuclear war movie). Great rendition of this song!
"How Firm a Foundation" was written in 1787 by John Rippon, and the melody is an Early American one. He pastored Carter's Lane Baptist Church in London for 63 years, beginning in 1775. Born in 1751, so he was in his mid-twenties when he first mounted the Carter's Lane pulpit following his education at the Baptist College in Bristol, England. The unique power of this hymn is due to the fact that each of the seven original stanzas were based on various biblical promised. The first verse established the hymnist's theme -God's Word is a sufficient foundation for our faith. The author then selected precious promised from the Bible, and converted these into hymn stanzas, among them: Isiah 41:10, Fear not for I am with you. . . Isiah 43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be will you. . . 2 Corinthians 12:9 - My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Hebrews 13:5 - For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." First published as "Exceedingly Great and Precious Promises." Lynn Larson
I don't like changing the words - "thee" to "you" and "thy" to "your". The replacement words don't fit as well when singing. This hymn, in addition to being an inspiration, is also a work of art. You wouldn't alter poetry - what is this obsession with tinkering with our hymns?
AWESOME!!! HALLELUJAH!!!
What a fantastic hymn!
Thank you lord Jesus 🙏
I love that piano arrangement........

Cree meeting dairy bar, these words mean so much to me as I go through so great trials. God bless you and yours
And also you.
What I needed to hear as we start this New Year. Thanks!
A friend from the States online introduced me to this recently . I'm from the UK . Beautiful though 😀
Yes, the definition of Worship in the NT is in Romans 12:1. Singing is done with thankfullness in our hearts to God, as a form of prayer and to encourage each other in the gospel.
When I am lowered into the earth I am hoping I hear the Angles singing this hymm.
singing is but a small part of worship...but many Christians don't understand - praise/singing is an activity, worship is all that you do with your life....
in my church we say who unto the Savior
Great Job. God Bless.
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. This is to all denominations: If Daniel 7:9-14 is your Scripture of the Day, this is a good hymn to compliment it.
Our song
So very true! Thanks for telling us that about Gen. R E Lee.
YES>> MEN OF GOD stand up and be COUNTED!
Thank you for sharing!
I have never heard this version before
I'm glad to know someone knows this fact!
We just finished our study with J.Venan Mcgee!
It's me, again. I also play the piano and organ. Today (August 4), I filled in at a local Presbyterian Church. I played this as the Hymn of Dedication.
General Robert E. Lee's favorite hymn
Wait he was a Christian? That's awesome if that's true.
@@jonbar140 he was a very devout Christian. So was Stonewall Jackson.
Was president Teddy Roosevelt’s too apparently.
Jonathon Barberio yessir Lee was a Christian
@@14gocougs I mean, technically speaking everyone was a Christian back then, at least nominally.
A favorite song of Robert E. Lee's as well; in fact, I first heard this song on a CD compilation of Confederate songs.
Yes,I believe,yes,I know!
It's probably because the tune to this hymn plays in the intro to The Day After (1983).
Excellent
Got my stuff going again love you brother Im doing good love you
(2 conrinthians 10:3-6)
3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 6 And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.
Amen!
This song was a favorite of General Robert E Lee.
lindo
Amen.
J Vernon McGee -- Through The Bible.
There are a couple of instructions to sing in the epistles of Paul, and also we have Mark 14:26 And Matthew 26:30, where Jesus and his disciples sing a hymn together.

Through the bible radio with J Vernon McGee Theme Song
That's great, I had no idea "adeste fidelis" went with this!
One worships/serves God with there entire life. (Romans 12) however, singing about him is part of that, it is in particular part of encouraging one another with the truths about God (Colossians 3:16), for an example of Jesus singing with his disciples, Matthew 26:30
Please may we use this recording for our Circuit Service (Taunton Deane and South Sedgemoor Methodist Circuit) this coming Sunday, Hopefully, yours, Deborah
Please, who, or what group, performs this hymn?
I also noticed slight variations in the song from song book to song book. The wording is slightly different depending on the song book you look at. And some books have more verses than others. Just curious about the differences.
Verse 4 seems to be based on Isiah 1:25
Many people rely not on the Bible but on their tradition.
I don't find the disciples sing... So when did all this singings started?
just curious
Jesus sang every passover, after the third cup. Have you never been to Seder?
I wonder where you christians get the idea that worshipping God is by singing? I didn't find Jesus teach singing.
Ephesians 5:19
horrible audio! despicable! truly.
