Enjoyed the story of your journey. I’ve been shooting Leica since acquiring a M3 from a friend of my father’s for $500. 54 years later I’m shooting a M11. It’s the tool I’m comfortable with.
For the feel, you just can't beat a Leica. It's a brick, but ultra portable. The lenses are every bit as good as the best glass from Sony, Canon, Nikon, etc... but they're literally pocket sized. So you get this perfect weight and heft but the image quality and color stands right beside these pocket rocket modern mirrorless cameras with their baby-leg-sized lenses. It's perfect. I went with the M240 because I don't have the side cash for the M10, and I'm super happy with it 🤘
I picked an M camera up for the first time today (M10) and I thought my Leica TL2 is solid...no, the M10 is SOLID. The heft and the build quality is what immediately struck me. You can tell it's serious quality and no bs. Took it out for a few photos and had a great time with it (summicron-m 50 f2 6bit), the pictures and rendering were really something to behold. Even straight out of the camera, they have a very clear professional look to them, but it looks real and not oversharpened or HDR-fake looking like a lot of the cameras/lenses produce these days. It has bumps, Knicks, and even a good size dent on the top plate but it seems to work like a charm. It's definitely built to last and can see this thing being taken on any adventure that someone wants to go on with it.
I agree that the 24mp sensors are the sweet spot for digital photography. Some claim more than 24mp`s can add too much "digital" in a photo. I shot with a Nikon F2 for years but the price of film with development and long shipping times made me reconsider. I wanted a Leica digital camera and decided on a Leica MD-262 after watching a video made by Thorsten Overgaard. I love film cameras and shooting film and the Leica MD gets me as close to the film experience as possible...!
l love my M10 as well, the only issue for me is the sharp edges body design. I scratched my fingers while trying to to pull the iso knob up due to the sharp corners
Hi, great article, I have a M249 but really would like M10 but I just can’t justify the extra cost at the moment so I keep reading articles to convince myself that the M240 is still a good camera in 2024!
Was collecting some images in town the other day with my M11 and a very friendly guy asked, “so is that an old camera?” “Yah it is” I answered. That’s me, just an old guy puttering around with an old camera.
I’m selling my Pentax 67 right now 😢 I still love it but just need the money and I’m not shooting with it much. facebook.com/marketplace/item/2215745065283157/?mibextid=KaSIrG
Thumbs up, even you choose the M10 over the M240 😏, which is the better one...😇. 35 and 50 mm are very close in focal length and wouldn't be my preferred set up. I got 24/3.8 + 50/1.4 + 90/2.5 plus a number of R-lenses from my Leica R 6.2. Thanks for sharing your journey. Keep on rolling.
I really enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing, Josh. A year or so has passed since this was uploaded, so I'm wondering if you're still shooting with the M10? If so, do you have any more thoughts on it? I'm looking to get my first M (also an M10), so I'm really interested in long term reviews as well. I know it's subjective, but I can totally appreciate relate to you why you chose the M10.
Hey thanks Darryl. The price is the only downside. As a freelancer when this winter has been slow I have thought about selling it but I love shooting with it so much I can’t. I will probably sell my Summicron 50mm V4 because I mostly stick with my 35mm Asph. I am still in love with the camera and bring it most places with me. Also coming from film I have a screw on Black Pro-Mist 1/8 filter that I leave screwed on to either of the lenses to get a little bloom in the highlight, then edit with VSCO or Dehancer to get more of a film look. You can see my photos with the camera on my photo IG @jmhfilm or my filmmaking work at IG @joshherumdp
Hi Josh, Your methodology for choosing the m10 was similar to mine. I started with the K1000 too and enjoyed the black and white film process for a long time then switched to digital. I really enjoy the m10. Reminds me of the k1000, but with a huge upgrade, and digital! I enjoyed your video allot. Thank you.
Leica is fun to hold and to use. The lenses are very good, too. I have found some good vintage lenses are around which work well. There are a lot of solutions to the picture problem, Leica is one of the better. Nice review.
I do agree with every single word as it comes to the choice of the M10 (except I would prefer the M10P for the esthetics). I bought my M10 back in november 2021 and the m11 didn’t even exist then. But the interest of the M11 is very low for me. And as you, I did also chose between the M240 and M10, but the exact same arguments made me buy the M10. And recently I bought my first Leica lens, Summicron 50mm v5. Since January I started my RUclips project where I choose one photo each week and talk about it, as a micro podcast, 100% focus in the photo and some photos around it. As you say, it’s so compact that I bring it with me everywhere all the time! :) Like the way you presented this video, and looking forward to see more from you!
One of my first cameras was a Pentax ME Super, small and agile. Have tried a few brands since. Settled on Nikon, D750 and FM2n. Also use Olympus OMD EM1, small and compact, good colours straight from camera. Also enjoy using Rolleicord Vb, nearly bought an Intrepid at a photo show in 2019. I guess it boils down to if you enjoy the camera you're using, there's a good chance of producing good work. Thanks for your insight.
The ME Super was amazing. It was the camera I grew up on. Just picked one up for next to nothing on FB marketplace just to hold the nostalgia in my hand again. :)
Beautiful! My first real camera was a Pentax K1000 as well, back in 1998. I progressed over the years to Leica M8, M240, now M10-D. The M is just the perfect camera for me. Happy to see you found the M10 as well.
Wow! The 3d pop from the Pentax 67 lenses is magical! The photos of the cut up tree, the coconuts, the basketball hoop, the guy with his dog and others are really good and I felt like I was in the scenes. Maybe I’m nuts, but I’m obsessed with that 3d pop in photos. I feel like it makes photos come alive. Great video.
Same: shooting way less film and more digital. Of my Nikon Df, X-Pro2 and M-P 240, the Leica is my favorite which is saying a lot since its AWB and auto exposure totally suck. But there’s just something about it that makes me want to shoot it. Colors are nice, too. Don’t miss the film experience because I shoot it just like I would a film camera: intentionally and usually just one or two of any scene.
Josh, you make some great points. I like that you did a lot of research before taking the jump. I did a similar video where I rent the M10r with a 50mm 1.4 lux, if you have a moment let me know what you think. Your lens setup is the same I want to eventually get a 35mm and a 50mm.
Just found your channel from this video. Great video. Loved your story of your journey. It seems like you made a great choice with the M10. I want to give the Leica M-System a try one of these days. Great work! New subscriber here.
I’ve been thinking about getting the Leica Q2 since 2020. I love the Fuji X100V, so the one lens thing isn’t an issue but 28 might be too wide for me. Anyways, great video!
@@joshherumdp , the sort of music choice you made. Many RUclipsrs use it and it's got this sound fluctuation in and out of tune. I just got a feeling that it is not the best choice, just the opinion 🙂😉
M10R black paint here. No better camera for personal work. The R is about as many megapixels as I would go. The sensor is really special. It’s the only Leica M body that has it aside from the M10M. The M11 went away from the classic M ethos. I don’t like it at all.
I love the basis! Film is expensive! And Leica Digital is free! Totally free! How may films would that free price be? Use film, bleed slowly! Digital Leica sell body parts..l
Nice video. I enjoyed your Leica experience. I have a Leica M Type 262 that I really enjoy but of late have been using a small Panasonic GX85 with Leica DG 15mm f/1.7 lens. A nice tiny package that is easy to pack anywhere and image quality from the lens is beautiful.
