  • Are you looking in the wrong decade for the perfect lens? 👀 I think the Leica 50mm Summicron v2 Dual Range is one of the best lenses to buy in 2023 if you are looking for a Leica lens under $1000.

    What I learned about the "Leica Look", Leica develops lenses with great detail whilst avoiding the aggressive sharpness found in others...!

    I am 67 and have been shooting photography since the mid 70’s.
    I now shoot film and digital.
    I am always researching old unique lens that give some of that old film look on digital cameras.
    I don’t believe you can get that from presets like those found in my exposure software. You can come close but using an old classic lens with the presets you can nail it.
    I have purchased several lenses and now have a 50mm Pentax which I use for automotive antique cars on my Fujifilm camera.
    After watching your video I am now on the hunt for the lens in your video.
    Excellent video with all the relevant information needed.
    Thank you so much!
    It is the first video I have ever seen from you and I now subscribe to your channel.

      I inherited a huge collection of vintage Leica bodies and lenses from my grandpa and uncle (both passed away), been using this lens and the Summicron 35mm f2 (my favorite because the 35 on a mirrorless would be like a 56mm with the crop factor) on my cheap Canon M50, using a custom picture profile that emulates film colors and toned down sharpness (in-camera settings), it looks like film images straight from JPGs, and I actually dig the imperfections and soft focus/edges, with this setup now I enjoy taking photos again because I never really liked the digital look nowadays, it's just so uninspiring... I think if you use a Fujifilm camera with their color recipes you can probably get even closer to that film look with this lens. Good luck with your hunt!

    Great video. I agree that the design of Leica is half the joy of using them.
    The “Leica Look” is all in the lenses.
    So that’s all I use now. I chuckle when I see people spend a ton of money on Leica digital bodies, and then shoot cheap Chinese lens knockoffs. 🤣

      I would rather buy an older digital M than resort to buying the crappy Chinese lenses, if I had a tight budget. In any case, the CV lenses are not really that much more, and are far better built.

    No doubt this DR and Rigid are excellent 50 mm vintage lenses. As for 35 mm, the vintage Summaron f/2.8 lens also has good value. Those Leica lenses were so solidly built with unmatched quality and performance back then.

    You are a fantastic photographer and I'm glad that you took some "documentary style" photos. Most photographers and reviewers only do landscapes and gas stations. The 50mm DR Summicron is one of the two lenses, I own, that I will never sell. The other one is the Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm 1.5 II. I use the Summicron on my M3 and it's a match made in heaven. Currently, the lens is at Leica HQ, because the focus ring doesn't work properly but the image quality is superb. If you use film like Tri-X or the new Fomapan Ortho 400 and develop it with Rodinal, you get some magic.

      @@_parkphoto Feel free to get in touch with Meyer Optik Goerlitz, they can probably provide you the lens for a limited time. There are only two or three great reviews on RUclips, so they could need some attention. It‘s like a Helios 44-2 on steroids, however I prefer it on a SLR camera.

    Video @ 1:07 "the best lens you can buy that is a Leica lens" - Yes, and in the 1960's, the two main photography magazines held this lens as the benchmark for sharpness. Modern and Popular Photography both claimed the Dual Range as the BEST lens they had ever tested. - BTW, NEVER alter the rear cam of this iconic lens WHY alter the collectability of a classic ? - Many early 60's Jaguar XK-E owners who altered their V12 Classic cars by installing a Chevy V8 engine, REGRETTED IT ! - Better to acquire a camera that easily accepts this collectable lens (Mirrorless digital or film).

    Even if I only have Leica lenses on my M cameras, I must admit that the Voigtlander 50mm f2.0 APO-Lanthar aspherical could be a better choice if you're looking for a budget 50mm M mount lens. And the best of both worlds (fast and sharp) is without any doubt a used 50 summilux. Peter Karbe favorite lens. And mine too.

    great video, great photos. subbed. only thing that wasn't clear is if you need to butcher it just to use on an M10 (seem to remember there was an issue with some old lenses touching sensors), or whether that's just for using the close focus?

    • @craig_cunha
      @craig_cunha 8 месяцев назад

      Same thoughts here. Does it need to be modded to work on the digital M’s, or is the mod only to allow close focus?

    • @_parkphoto
      @_parkphoto  7 месяцев назад +1

      So it needs to be modded in order to safely attach it to any digital M besides the M11. Otherwise the extra length on the focusing helicoid will wreck either the light meter or rangefinder focusing inside the camera. It’s a clearance issue of sorts. But, I believe it’s because the M11 has a sensor-based light meter only, it doesn’t have that issue and has clearance for the extra length on that helicoid.

      "internal haze" - Yes, folks don't realize that even Rolex watches, after 30 plus years REQUIRE a C L A (cleaned, lubed & adjusted). So why can't they also realize that something that exposes optics to nearby lubricant, will eventually show the out-gas contamination. Which by the way, WILL eventually turn acidic (coatings are then permanently damaged)

    This is really dumb, why not just simply wait until you can get another lens before butchering the lens (even a vintage lens) [especially when you had the money to buy a M240 and SL2S and Fuji cameras; the whole thing does not make any sense]]. The lens does not compare with the latest Leica lenses in any way. There is so little knowledge of the Leica or Voigtlander, even TTartisan or 7artisans outside of this specific lens. By the way Austin videos might be ok, but a lot of the photographs shot have a greenish cast. Why make any video at this beginner's stage??
