I know I'm not alone when I say that for those of us of a certain age, PR 1984 encapsulates a big part of what drum and bugle corps "is". Raw power!! The more recent versions seem to be lacking that edginess.
Unfortunately, the 1992 Regiment bras was not UNLEASHED like it was early in summer rehearsals. They were scaled back until about two weeks left in the season that year. I still don't think they were as loud at the end of the year as they were earlier in summer rehearsals. I was just happy to hear them every day though that season and they were definitely better at the end of the year. I was on the Phantom Regiment percussion staff. 1984 Phantom Regiment member.
Phantom own 1812, nobody does it like them. 1983 Phantom's 1812 is my favourite, Cant believe its not worthy of a mention here. Loved the bit at the end with the cymbals and tenors going to back field and coming back on with snares to end the show with 18 in the snare line
84 Phantom for pure Tchaikovsky (and with 2 valves). All Phantom drills. Carolina Crown beautiful horn line nice homage to Phantom with horn line step over. Loved Boston middle voices. PHANTOM WINS.
In 1984 Was My First WORLD CHAMPION SHIPS . I Have Always Been A PHANTOM REGIMENT Fan , Seeing And Hearing The 1812 Overture Preformed By Them Was TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE !!!! This is Drum Corps AT IT'S BEST ! . . . . . Thank you for posting this. It really doesn't matter who you think did it best. Enjoy the energy and passion all the musicians and dancers/auxiliary have. These professionals are AMAZING and why I've followed Drum Corps since 1955.
‘84 PR rendition of 1812 Overture is the standard unit of measure for all, and I mean ALL, other renditions of 1812 Overture. ‘92 PR is a close second.
Um, 1983 was not an option why ? Over the years, I would have expected PR to bring it back to the field as an entire show theme true to the original score. The way drum corps has “evolved”, now that will never happen.
We tried the best we could to do that in 1992. It was a great summer though !! 1984 Phantom Regiment percussion member 1992 Phantom Regiment percussion staff member
Yeah. They really captured the randomness of exploding artillery in a superior way, yet also orchestrated to be highly musically effective. I couldn't pick any singular show here, just because each has some amazing hair raising properties. I have always been a huge fan of this type of show. (It) encapsulates history, tradition, musicality, and creating an auditory experience with great artistic expression. And, big, fully blown chords that rip your face off. I'm gonna watch it again.
All were super fantastic...the 1984 version was so REAL..you could feel as if you were in the middle of the battle...amazing talent by ALL the years teams...Love all of you guys ..you ahd tears straming doen this old ruddy face...
The 1983 Phantom Regiment version of 1812 should have gotten included in this debate. It should not be a debate anyway! It was the best Phantom Regiment version. I say that as I marched the 1984 version, and was on the percussion staff for the 1992 version. Both great versions! The 1983 version was also better than the other corps mentioned as you have to go with the originators as a start. HOW THE 1983 VERSION WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS IS A TRAVESTY !!
I was in the Regiment tenor line in '83 and '84. '84 for sure (except for the watering down of our tenor book). Technically, I was in the 18 member snare line at the end of 1812, too. Awesome show and rendition of 1812.
1984 was before I started following drum corps but that was a very good version. Plus, you can't beat seeing that Georgia Tech logo at the 50-yard line - GO JACKETS!! But I remember seeing 1992 that summer, so I have to go with that version. I remember loving the 1992 PR show.
Was there in 84. Oh my this one is hard to choose. The 84 PR version is so iconic and they have to be given an award for having a beast of pit crew. That kid was beating the h*** out of the bass drum to get the cannon effect. Sentimental gives it to 84 PR. Best brass though has to be Crown. I think Finis might be the most underrated show in DCI history.
1992. The level of competition was amazing back then. Everything about '92 makes it the best. '83 comes in second and then Crown was great in 3rd. You can't beat the '92 drum arrangement for this piece
I may be biased, considering I am a FMM (Cavaliers '77-'87), but is this even a question ??!! No contest... 1984 Phantom Regiment !!! Phantom was the blueprint for any Classical-based Drum Corps to this day. SPLOOIE-4-Life (and beyond) 💚💀🖤🏳🌈
Has to be ‘84 Phantom. I’m quite partial to classic drum corps. I’d like to see a corps that doesn’t seem to use the pit as a crutch, because (no offence to the pit) it just seemed better when the pit was just so the mallets and timpani wouldn’t weigh down the drill.
This is so tough. Regiment 84 is the closest to the original, Regiment 92 has that awesome low brass, the mash up with Appalachian Spring in Crown 2008 was really cool , and idk too much about 2011 Boston, but that arrangement sounds interesting. I honestly can't pick one.
There is always a fine line between transcribing and arranging. How do you capture the essence of the original while adapting it to a different medium? Here, the designers are tasked with incorporating the end of a 15-minute overture into a completely separate production. The ending excerpt simply does not pace all that well as a drum corps finale, forcing the performers to overcome ill-timed climax points. I give credit to Michael Klesch (Crown) and Jay Kennedy (Boston) for recognizing the inherent pacing challenges to make the music work alongside the thrilling visual designs that accompany them.
you said it better than I could, but I felt like Crown 08 captured the music best. however, 84 Reg has a power and essence that the others can't even touch
Yup. They're all great in their own ways, but the cream rose to the top in 1984. The Phantom version was unmatched. The first company front had me on my feet.
Boston Crusaders was by far the best modern take on it, phantom is the best traditional take on it. However, I would absolutely kill to see BC incorporate streamers and maybe use bigger more diverse flags for guard. That would make it perfect
How about boston crusaders played it on the Boston esplanade in 2015 joining the Boston pops for the fourth of july concert that is some pretty good company to be performing with
Boston had to stretch the beats to make its (still amazing) drill work, so no. Carolina Crown's sound is the richest, but '92 Phantom's drill is the best, but '84 Phantom's performance is purer, more true to the original. Overall, I'm going to vote '92 Phantom.
All of them were 1st rate. Boston here for the win, imo. Creative and distinct arrangement of 1812 Overture, and the Visual here gave them the win, imo
OK, so these were all awesome, no question. However, the percussion section leader in PR 1984 was our drumline instructor at U of Iowa in the late 80s and we played exactly the same drumline parts, winning the Sudler trophy for that show in 1988/89. So I'm partial to that show, however I prefer the tempo and the power in the 92 version.
PR . Watching other corps play it… I liken it to a hypothetical Bluecoats playing Phantom of the Opera. They could do it, but it would seem just a bit wrong.
I'm gonna give 84 Phantom the nod over 2008 Carolina Crown here. Crown's was technically superior, but I'm not a fan of their arrangement. 92 Phantom's arrangement seemed, at least to me, closest to the original arrangement. 2011 BAC was selling me initially, until they stopped moving and then cut half of it out. 84 Phantom had me throwing babies, and 08 Crown's had me going "Holy crap that's clean." but I'll take baby throwing over technical prowess any day....Tho in this case it's VERY close.
92 PHANTOM. best 8th place show of all time. They were robbed. Just ask David st angel 😂 New school arrangements trying too hard. The original is badass enough. They are visually superior however drill wise.
1984 phantom regiment rendition of 1812 overture was the best of all times, hands down.
Thank you

Marched snare in the 50’s/60’s. Phantom is probably my favorite modern day Corps. 1984 was the s**t! Things have changed since ‘66.

We've gone from power to brightness. I still prefer the G bugles.
I was in Phantom Regiment in 1983 and 1984 and I must agree with you, being in the middle of that was so awesome
92 Regiment brass, 2011 Boston visual. Those ending moves were off the wall.
Yes...loved the formations!
Unfortunately, the 1992 Regiment bras was not UNLEASHED like it was early in summer rehearsals. They were scaled back until about two weeks left in the season that year. I still don't think they were as loud at the end of the year as they were earlier in summer rehearsals.

I tend to think 1812 belongs to Phantom Regiment. That being said, each of these corps did a spectacular job.
Phantom '92
Great arrangement. Solid low brass. G Bugles.
84 Phantom. You cannot believe how much power they had! Yes, I was there. I heard all these corps live, including Phantom 1983.
1984 Phantom!!! amazing you had to be there in person since the recording doesn't make justice for how good it was!!!
