I shot 3 varying distance stages to see if I could beat my score with my Sig 320 Legion with Romeo One Red Dot Optic against my Pietta Great Western 2 Single Action Army Revolver.

I graduated my police acadamy in 1989, with a Smith & Wesson M586 357 Mag. Over half the class utilised the Beretta 92 FS. I won "Top Gun" pretty easily, and my two reloads for their one gun load was always faster. The double action taught me accuracy (only six rnds), trigger control, but I had to come up with my own reloading technique. The basics are golden, and I say there is no actual "advanced" shooting technique.
This exebition of your is a great idea. Folks assume that autos made revolvers "obsolete", when the objective is lost...Put a bullet on target to stop an attack. More if needed.

I am impressed. It’s been years since I pulled Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting off my shelf, but as I recall, Ed McGivern tried auto pistols and concluded he could run double action revolvers faster. Your work with a single action is very impressive.

Fundamentally, this is like a guy with a stick and a rock versus a guy with a modern hammer... A guy with a pointy stick vs a knight with a sword. It's nuts he scored as well as he did.
I’d say the hammers are a good comparison indeed, because the more advanced tech of one is gonna be irrelevant in many cases.
I just have to say, that revolver belt/holster is awesome. Makes me wanna make my own someday. (Also great shooting, and thanks for sharing this with us!)

A good visualisation and comparison of Hit Factor. Like others, it's great that you left in the mistakes and showed not just that it can be done, but just how hard it is and how things have to line up to be achieveable.
Is it possible to beat it, yes, is it repeatable and do-able everytime? probably not... But the more you practice, the more repeatable it would become.

This is awesome! Just found your videos tonight. I grew up pre ban era all semi or fully automtic tax stamp guns just for the coolness factor. Only owned 2 revolvers the big colt anaconda and the Taurus raging bull .454 casull. Again for coolness factor but honestly didn’t even take the time to understand how they work. Back in the day I converted and tax stamped ak’s uzi’s, ar bushmasters, HK and Benelli weapons. Now 57 and just more interest in bugout bag weapons. I’ve been experimenting with just total blackout anarchy reloading. Stuff like worst scenario 12 gauge shell reloading. If you have a primer, hulls, and powder you can use stones, broken car glass, almost anything as shot. Now interested in cap and ball revolvers. Never owned one can’t find any real info on the web about improving them. In my searches found you RUclips channel. Not just cool and amazing but so informative. I can convert almost any semi auto to full auto but making a revolver shoot fast wow! You not only can but shoot but have the knowledge on revolvers. I was looking at one of the Remington 1859 cap and ball with faster changing cylinders for the bugout bag. This is a bag only for the worst of the worst scenarios hopefully never have to use. I have hand packed shotshells with black powder, paper for wads, even grass. Pretty much anything you can put in the 12 gauge hull will work for shot. You can hand crimp and even use a stick to close the shell. Now just started looking at the black powder cap and ball revolvers. Want to jump in the rabbit hole you have already went deep in but asking on your recommendation. First can a cap and ball be modified and tweaked for speed and which would you recommend? I will probably get the .45 colt conversion cylinders as well but I am really looking to go grass roots. Been as far as I can go the other way, full auto, silencers, blah blah blah. I watched your video on differences between the standard and what is needed to modify into a race gun. Understand 100%. The fun will be learning to utilize it like you do. I have never seen or held a black powder revolver, barely any info or images online of one apart. Been researching for two weeks. Tonight saw your channel, so much info. Do the black powders work similar to the army you showed or am I in a fantasy world.😂
The Pietta 1958 Remington cap and ball copy is probably the best made cap and ball. Everything Uberti is inferior to Pietta, at least in revolvers.
it goes to show, if you practice with it, you can be scary deadly with whatever. That is sure impressive, sure a great shot!

Nice job, the demonstration was a success. Shooting from the hip ain't a easy feet to hit target at that distance.
SAA wins! Think there was a stipulation in the original USPSA Rule Book that firearms over 100 years old were allowed a maximum of two mulligans in comparison competitions with late model firearms. Nice shooting.

Ha Ha! The worst thing was that all those clips were backlit so bad I couldn't use them so the risk was for nothing!
@@TUCOtheratt yeah, it's a shame the clips weren't useable, but the rest of the video being shot in the golden hour was worth it!
I would think that those fellows in the 1870's to 1890's who had lots of ammo and little else to do in life would have really gotten good with those pistols with practice. I don't think we really know how good some of them were. We just hear the stories.

Best video ever. I do totally disagree with the equality of the two weapons. Red dot 2 handed grip semiauto vs SSA hip shooting! Give me a break! You didn't even shoot the Red dot from the hip. Your speed and muscle memory in that arm are amazing. I, like most people, can't hit an oil barrel on the first shot. Sure I can slowly
dial it in and hit it but I'd be long dead before that. You're too humble Tuco. You know how long it took to learn to do what you do.

The very last run with the SAA you could see the confidence when you drew. I could tell you had it before seeing. Like you didn't try, just muscle memory.
Man I really dig your style, and I know the trains might be annoying for you on site, but I think it makes it a bit more western lol. Like hearing a train rolling through an old west station lol. I am trying to get my first revolver, and have been really enjoying the content you put out.

Great vid. But a moot point after all for us pistoleros. I would rather go down firing my single action and looking so cool as opposed to maybe firing a touch faster with a semi-auto. Along with the greater risk of jams on the semi of course. Nice shooting as always mi compadre!

Sadly, as a Brit, I'm no longer able to shoot pistols, but in the 80s I switched to pin shooting because I found the scoring system much easier than PPC. Wish I'd tried black powder guns when I had the chance as I now shoot only co2 revolvers. Going to check out your videos on fanning and try that🔫😸

Tuco, I think It would be interesting to see the results of the comparison using the iron sights on the glock too. I know your purpose here is comparing State of the art with 150 year old state of the art, I’ve never shot with a reddot sight myself, but I believe they also have low power magnification, which can make a huge difference in score, leaving the SAA at more disadvantage. It would be interesting to test the glock with and without the reddot sight, to see the actual advantage added to the glock as a result of the sight alone. That difference should bring the SAA even closer to the glock performance. Thank you for your interesting and educational videos, I really enjoy them!

I watched this video last week and I’ve been thinking about it since.
In the early 70s I carried SA revolver for self-defense while working my parents gold claim. Later, I qualified expert with the .45 ACP in the Navy. So I’m familiar with both types of weapons and both methods of shooting.
I think you were thrown off a bit by using the sights and that it would’ve been better if you did some practice shots with your revolver before scoring.
In other words, I have no problem with you not counting the first two shots in the close and the far positions.

Very cool. I think for the long distance shots you should’ve aimed fully. Shooting from the hip like that is awesome up close, but I’d say at any distance aiming with the arm extended is better. Just my option. Cool beans though!!!
I enjoyed watching this. Where I live in the UK we aren’t allowed guns like these, more’s the pity cos I love the SAA. We are allowed airsoft and air guns. I do own a race airsoft Colt 1911 and an Umerex SAA co2 air pistol and a fast draw western holster. I love to practice my fast draw and I’m not too bad for a 69er. I am going to try to recreate this test on my own indoor range, I know there’s no comparison to the real steel but I bet its going to be a lot of fun to see if I can beat the 1911 and maybe the co2 Luger

TUCO, thank you for a very enjoyable and informative video. The fact of using the red dot system on the semi auto, increasing your ability and potential of speed and accuracy, is certainly expected. But, what if the semi auto pistol was set up, in the same manner as the SAA? Remove the benefit of the red dot system, using only the stock sites, and the same for the SAA? Finally, use the semi auto in the same manner as the SAA, from the hip, without the benefit of sites. With the elbow being bent, and firing with only one hand, could lead to a fail to cycle issue. In my humble opinion, in the right circumstance(s), the "Peacemaker" is still a viable option for self defense. Stay safe my friend.

I truly enjoyed this video and I thank you for it,but I’m curious as to whether or not you’ve ever missed the target and hit your down range camera or stand (the one that’s right by the target facing you)?
I never have hit it in 7 years of videography putting it near the targets. But I had some close calls including yesterday. I sent one on the long range miss between the target stand and the camera, must have been close.
@@TUCOtheratt You’re extremely good at hip shooting, of that I can assure you. Just how far is that longest shot? I backed it up a few times and never did catch what the distance was, but I have had a not so great morning with many distractions.
About 12 yards I didn't measure it.
@@TUCOtheratt very impressive, I can do 18-20 feet without a lot of trouble on a 16-20oz beer can, 36 feet, no way. Very impressive my friend!
When you consider, the Sig P320 you are shooting conventional whereas the SAA you are hip firing and fanning the hammer that is pretty damn impressive. Hip firing the Sig P320 would probably lead to similar results at that distance as far as misses. You're basing it off of feel instead of sight. Pretty neat test regardless.

Tuco I think you are underestimating yourself or your ability with a single action in a situation where a gun is needed. I’ve been watching your videos ever since I first saw your channel. You’re fast and accurate so I am pretty sure if you had to use a single action that anything from 1 shot to 3 after you draw from the holster and shoot from the hip you would definitely come out on the winning end of the confrontation. With your skills with a single action once you fired then it would be over because no matter how many there might be I think that first shot with your quick draw speed along with accuracy they will have second thoughts about staying and wanting the confrontation to keep continuing. So in my opinion You would have the advantage to end the fight with 1 or maybe up to 3 shots . That’s my opinion on it .
@@jamesshackelford6721 Thank you for the vote of confidence!😃 There are a few reasons I would reach for a Sig 320 or Glock. One is I can quickly operate a semi with one hand. I never thumb cock a revolver in the holster for safety reasons so it's skill I don't have. My SAA quick draws require 2 hands.(draw and fan with the other hand) In self defense you never know the situation and must react to the bad guy trying to kill you so you start out at an extreme disadvantage. It might even be within arms reach and if he ties up either hand I'd be in trouble with a SAA. It's true that I can react, draw and fire on target with a SAA very quickly. But that only works when I wear my speed rig as shown in the videos. I could wear that rig in public legally where I live but the danger is that anyone could grab my gun from behind. (this happens in real life to open carryers) Also the element of surprising the bad guy with a concealed weapon is lost with open carry. Add to that ammo capacity and reload time disadvantage with an SAA. However, if I had to, in a life or death self defense emergency because no other gun was handy I'd use an SAA to get the job done.
@@TUCOtheratt I think You are able to be able to get that first shot off with a single action army before whoever is facing you will know what happened. I know how fast it is using a single action a da/sa along with simiauto . I’ve handled all those at one time or another. There is a slight trick for being able to draw a single action army pulling the hammer back then firing as soon as you clear the holster. I was told by some old men years ago about it. When you first grab the grips in your hand to start bringing the gun out of the holster you slip your thumb on the hammer pulling back as soon as the cylinder is pretty free. Then fully cock the gun all while clearing your holster so by the time the end of the gun is almost totally out your ready to fire . They also said to keep your finger off the trigger until the end of the barrel is clear of the holster and towards your target. I do carry a single action army 45 and practiced that years ago.

That was a great demonstration… even taking the second runs with the SAA into consideration. As I said before, you sure do know you way around shootin’ irons. I’m assuming the same applies to rifles and shotguns. I’d feel safer being in a foxhole with you than with almost anyone else except maybe Paul Harrell or Massad Ayoob when the SHTF here in 2024.

Good stuff! So one might be able to assume that a lashed down open carry SAA might also have a chance at besting an appendix carry subcompact semi auto as well. I think the train sounds fit well with the scenery. Maybe use the train horn as the shot timer sometime. You could also use the train noise as the perfect time to unleash a real barrage of hellfire with multiple guns for a few seconds that won't be as disturbing to the neighbors.
😂 I don’t think he has neighbors I do. They hate me shooting stuff around my property but they feel safe in the Adirondack mountains of upstate New York.
