Video game prices are getting CRAZY. From the Nintendo Entertainment System to the PS5 and Switch, you're able to find things going for SEVERAL THOUSAND real easily. Gotta love that reseller hypebeast culture, giving us graded copies of stuff that is actively dumb. Look no one should pay THAT much for a Sega 32X Game. NO ONE.

Collecting is actually worse in Canada. Most of our listings say they come from America, which means that they'll be adjusted from USD to CAD, which makes it more expensive, & if you do buy it then you most likely need to wait longer for it to arrive, which means it's more likely to get damaged during shipping. If game collecting sucks in America, it's 10x worse in Canada.

It's definitely a rough tear finding out you're in possession of valuable games, because on one hand, who couldn't use a bit of extra walkin' 'round money in this economy? At the same time, unless you bought a game with the explicit intent of selling back, it's gonna be REALLY hard to let it go.
Growing up, trading in games to EB Games/GameStop/etc. has practically traumatized me from selling any more of my games. Because whatever little happiness that $6 store credit might bring doesn't compare to the lifetime of regret realizing you'd miss that game or console more than you thought. And while emulation is there to help scratch that itch... it's just not the same as popping in the copy you've held onto for years, that you probably bought with your hard-earned (or gifted) money.

The one that always blows my mind is the DemiKids duology on the GBA. I bought both of those games new, but then lost them in 2008 when I moved. I was able to buy replacements for both games for less than 30 bucks COMBINED. Now Megami Tensei is a much bigger franchise in the state so loose cartridges of those games are nearly 200 bucks each. Better hope I don't ever lose these ones again!

I feel like the comparisons to movies and music sort of undercuts how much more of a challenge it is to move games to other hardware. It's an interactive medium, and the means of interacting with it (the console and controllers) fundamentally needs to change on different platforms a lot more than the transition from a cassette tape to a CD would. And yes I know emulating is a thing, but I feel like people will recognize the difference between playing a game on a GBA versus a Switch far more immediately than they would between watching a movie on a DVD or on a streaming service.

Because it incentivizes bad actors to screw people over by selling an okay-at-best game at ridiculous markups? Because the original developers often refuse to do anything about it even when they're still running and have all the proper licenses to resell the games, especially considering that they have a strong profit motive (if someone's desperate enough to pay $200 for a game they'll *definitely* play a more reasonable price for it especially without the scarcity)? Because the only cost-effective method for some people to play and archive certain games, ie. emulation, is often targeted by those same devs when they're not even bothering to offer a legal alternative? Because I'm sick of how capitalism poisons people's minds to where they're willing to roadblock a large swath of the population from enjoying pretty much anything whenever possible for the sake of the almighty dollar??? "Value" has much more meaning than simply "monetary cost", my dude. Creative value, emotional value, sentimental value, personal enjoyment value, I could go on. And even if it were just about monetary "value", it is still not a *good* reason to jack up the price of games to ridiculous amounts. Key word being *GOOD* reason, not just *a* reason. I understand how supply and demand work functionally, and that's not even remotely related to the point I'm trying to make. I just don't consider "supply and demand" to be a GOOD reason to make every little goddamn thing in the world so expensive to the point where the only option for some people to get any modicum of happiness is to either go broke or risk their or someone else's arrest, and I'm far from being alone in this thinking.
But I can't expect someone whose argument can't even begin to address any of the *actual* problems I have with conflating monetary cost to the full value of a creative work to actually understand where I'm coming from. Get your ass back to econ class if you're not going to bother even attempting to understand that there's anything in this world more valuable than cold hard cash.
