- In today’s episode of Retro Renew, I’m going to show you just how easy it is to change the save battery for your cartridge games. The method I’ll show you will work for the Gameboy, SNES, N64 and most cartridge based games! All you need are some good tools and some patients. Great tutorial! Some constructive feedback that I feel is worth mentioning: once the old battery is removed from the PCB, it's worthwhile to use a wick to clean off all of the older solder left behind on the terminals. You can then cleanly apply new solder to the terminals (after swabbing the bare terminals with some iso alcohol first, of course), this way you can avoid mixing in old and new solder when mounting the fresh battery. Not essential but a courtesy for anyone who might be the next owner of the cartridge -- or if you're repairing a cartridge for someone else.

Great video, easy to follow and see exactly what you are doing. Just last week I picked up a 'brain boy' for GB/GBC games off ebay for under $20 so I could easily back up my saves. It is a pretty interesting little device that I can not find very much information on but still managed to back them up.

I use to have bags lf old AA and AAA batteries i knew were dead but didn't know what to do eirh them so one day I i just tossed them all.
The local Ecycler told me they wouldn't take them (they actually all the ones who threw them away but I let them 100%)

Thanks for this video. I did a hack job the other day because I had to reuse the leads. Can't weld them on so I taped the top one, lol. I would also look into using a wick to make life way easier removing solder.

All my original Gameboy DMG games are short platformers etc so battery saves are not important as I just play them from start to finish in one sitting, if I do get any longer games though it looks like I'll be needing this video!

What a coincidence I ordered a Pokémon crystal a while back that had this problem fixed it after a few weeks and now you posted this video just about a week after I did it haha I should’ve waited cause I had some trouble at first but I ended up getting it

I was just thinking about replacing the battery on my Dragon Warrior 1/2 GB cartridge lol. It still works but idk for how long and I kinda wanna sell it.
Can't lose the save data if it hasn't held save data in over a decade lol. I'm glad to see it's easier than I thought. I need to replace my the batteries in my old Pokemon games but I couldn't find any name brand 2025 batteries with tabs. I've also heard bad things about ebay batteries. I heard I might be able to get away with using a 2032 in some of the 2025 games so I grabbed tabbed name brand of some of those to check. If I can't use those then I'll have to pick up some from ebay I guess. Your ebay link for the batteries no longer works so I wasn't able to check it out.

Pretty good tutorial Tito, I would like to replace the battery of my copy of Boktai, this cartridge needs a battery because the game has an internal clock like Pokemon Crystal

I was wondering how you did the effect at 1:20 where it seems as if the consoles are levitating? It looks amazing and I was curious how you pulled that off
It's kind of a simple trick. I have the consoles on a device that rotates. Then I use a mask function in my editing software to cover it and place the same background as an underlay to fill the masked portion to give it the appearance of floating. I'm sure there are some good tutorials on RUclips that show how to do it. I know that was a brief how to but hopefully it was somewhat helpful. Cheers!

This is a better solution because you don't have to solder again once installed.
Pretty Funny that the US needed that big of a NES cartridge but Famicom got the right more logical cart IMO. Great vid tho.

pls help! what kind of soldering wire i use on GBA cartridge and gameboy mod?
Correct me if I am wrong, but it might be a good idea to put Kapton tape on the pins or other important parts of the cart if you are new to soldering. It looks super easy on a video, but I had too much solder on the tip of the iron and a drop fell onto my GBC pins turning them silver and thought I ruined my game forever.
These videos make it look so damn easy. I've seen several and I just royally screwed it up. My brand new iron doesnt melt it fast or at all. Is 380C not enough?
Does anybody know if you can just take a different gameboy games save battery and put it into a different one?

Yes, you would not be able to save, I don't know if gameboy games have circuit protection so it could potentially cause some damage. I would check it immediately and make sure the polarity is correct. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Hopefully someone could chime in. Cheers Jeremy!

Man, sorry to hear that. You may be able to buy another game with the same pcb and sram chip and try to swap either the eprom or the sram. Kind of a tough fix but should be possible.

I had to do this to 3 of my games that I bought except I installed bigger batteries in them to ensure a longer life of saving games but I bought a couple of games I need to buy myself a smaller soldering iron for because the traces are SO small for repair.
Also I should note that the Gameboy and Gameboy Color only I put a CR2032 battery in both you still have to use a smaller battery for GBA games and I mixed up the polarity with my first game but nothing bad happened just still couldn't save

@@MachoNachoProductions yeah the battery takes a bit to align but I did that with pokemon yellow. I believe it was a 2016 or 2025 and I put a 2032 in. Have to bend the tabs to fit but it works fine. One of the local shops does this and they don't even solder it on. They use the pressure from the case to keep it aligned (which I think is stupid)
Oh man that’s crazy. I feel like if the cart dropped it would misalign the battery.
@@MachoNachoProductions yeah I completely forgot to mention I had to trim the tabs a little but I soldered mine in that using the case pressure I feel the same you definitely are loosing your save file the instant you drop it

Do you have a video on how to fix a Gameboy game that won’t boot? (Nintendo logo isn’t displayed correctly on boot) already cleaned the contacts with isopropyl alcohol
Unfortunately I dont. One thing you could try is to insert and remove a gameboy game many times. This will also help remove the oxidation on the cart reader contacts. Sometime IPA isn't enough to clean the contacts. By inserting and removing a game cart you are cleaning the contacts as well. Let me know if that works! Cheers buddy!

Macho Nacho Productions I tried that, been looking at other videos and they recommend trying to reflow the solder on the rom chip. Guess I’ll try that and see how it goes. Ah gotcha. Another thing you could check is, if there is any corrosion near the contacts one of the contact traces may have been damaged. Was there any corrosion?

That’s a great question! I think for the most part that can be done for home system carts like the NES, SNES, N64 etc but gameboy carts are likely too small to have a battery holder. It’s all about preference. These batteries don’t get replace frequently so i don’t mind just replacing the whole battery. Cheers Christopher!
It would be much easier and quicker to just solder a tabbed battery, which will last you another 15 - 20 years. You're realistically only ever going to replace the battery once... MAYBE twice...
@@MachoNachoProductions There's a pretty good flex PCB holder you can put in GB/GBC games now. I'm trying to see if there's anything for GBA as well. I found one thing on RGRS but they don't show it in a GBA cart, they just say it works. Haven't found a video of anyone using it either.

Overall a very good guide, a few things that irked me though. A multimeter is not needed, if you plan to play these games for a longtime its probably best to just replace regardless. I feel like by stating you need a multimeter will be another barrier for people to not do this. Secondly a desoldering pump, wick or anything else is not needed either. You can just heat up the solder joint and carefully lift the battery. By using a manual soldering pump (solder sucker) the force it uses can actually make the person using it hit the gameboy cartirdge which might break something haha. Funny enough, i have videos on both examples on people failing to replace a battery, one by using too much heat with a soldering iron and the other reusing the mechanical tabs. (Trash to Cash 8 & Trash to Cash 4) If youve read this far, stay awesome! :)

That is what most of my game collection consists of games I bought with a dead battery or labeled as non working

That’s a great strategy! I do the same thing but also with broken consoles. Most consoles that are sold as broken are fairly easy to repair, or were never broken in the first place. Cheers dude!
