Just pulled those shifters off an old bike. Same thing. Grease all hardened up. I like your method of cleaning but they really need a light lube after the cleaning.

How do u take the shifter cover off. I can’t take the cover off of my shifter because of the cable

Take out the cable first buddy

How did you remove the cable before working on the unit?

Push it through the hole, make sure your in lowest gear other wise the cable won’t reveal itself to the hole
