Very simple and quick video to show and explain the reason for what's wrong, this has taken ages to find online and it's such a nice humble fixing video. Thank you kind sir
Ahhhh. Great! I didn't see that second tier of ratcheting, and had exactly the same problem. This video is the 4th I've watched and finally my shimano shifters are free and working correctly! Thank you!
Worked on my 20+ year old Specalized Stumpjumper! I watched so many videos on fixing shifting problems, tried everything from tightening, losing, derailer adjustments... etc. I was about to give up and go to the bike shop and then bam, your trick worked great! Thanks!
Thank you so very much for the tip! I "found" my problem bike in my garage and it was my son's old bike which hadn't been ridden in ~10 years. Now, after fixing it up, I can give it to him and have just a little more space in my garage.
Thank you so much. That was exactly what was wrong with my shifter. I tried everything and then fixed it in minutes with your great video instructions.
Local Pd here got all new bikes and were getting rid of the old ones. I was able to get my hands on one of them and the shifters aren’t working. I’m about to try this out. Thank you!
This was a great help to me and seems to have cured my problem. Many thanks to you. Fixing things from dumpsters provides you with great knowledge. We call them skips here in UK ....
I was about to order a replacement shifter when I discovered your video. 10 mins later, mine was fixed applying your very clear instructions ! Many thanks for your help !! Greetings from Belgium
Thank you so much, that saved me a bunch of money on my one bike not having to take it to the repair shop, I'm sure they would have told me I have to replace the shifter. I followed this video and the bike has all its gears again.
Thanks a bunch. Like many people commenting, I have an identical problem. My bike is 20+ years old, but only been ridden a couple of times and is like new, as it has been stored in my clean garage. After electrifying it with a kit, I took it for a few trips and noticed it just wouldn't shift as described in your vid. Will have a look at it in the morning, when there's some light on the subject.
Many thanks for the video. I fixed my downshifting problem ( which was bugging me for weeks) in about 5 minutes! You da man!! Now I will go for a ride & tackle those hills which I could not do for a while because I was stuck in 3rd gear!! Yay!
Thanks for posting this. I just found three bikes in my neighbor's garbage, all in need of simple repairs and maintenance. The GT mountain bike has this problem and I'm going to fix it before my Offerup buyer arrives. Isn't it amazing how effort and ingenuity (coupled with a little help on RUclips) can turn into money :-)
Great stuff my man, I had a look at my shifter today it has the same problem, I can go from 7th gear to 4th then it stops. I took it apart and had no idea why it didn't work :/ luckily you have solved my problem and hopefully a lil WD will loosen the lever, thanks!
Thank you for posting this. I have an old bike with Shimano ST-EF28 shifters and the 3 speed left-hand shifter would not engage 3rd gear. The problem was identical to what is shown in your video. I used lighter fluid on the stuck part (copper looking piece) and moved it back and forth with a small pick. After about a minute of brushing on lighter fluid and working it with the pick, it started to move freely. When I tested the shifting, it amazingly worked perfectly! After it dries, I'll put a small drop of oil on it and it should be good for years.
Holy shit, I took it to the shop they fixed it but same problem and I had to pay 20 each time every two weeks! Then they told me I have to change the gears for $500 when the bike itself was only $300. I bought a new bike but I still fixed my old one with your method so now I have two working bikes! Some people just want you to spend so much money and they mislead you on whats wrong with it!
Thank you so much for this top tip! Like you, I've found a dumpster bike that has been left out in the weather for a while, but I was starting to think I'd bitten off more than I could chew. I'd already stripped down the shifters and so soaked and scrubbed them in soapy water. They're immediately back in full working order. Thanks again.
Greetings from Blighty. The other videos on you tube suggest spraying everything with degreaser and lube. Only when I found your video did I solve the specific problem. Most excellent ! Thanks Jonathan
Cool video. Thats what is wrong with mine I'm sure. I push my gear lever forward it won't budge at all. Its a Giant upload SE quite old know. Just wasn't maintained over the years. Its my brothers bike.
I was just about to give out my mountain bike cause it was having this exact problem when I saw this video I quickly went to get my bike and did the exact thing shown on video and walla it worked perfectly now it's shifting going to keep it
Got mine going (acted just like yours) but I used a solvent to clean the old grease out, blew them out with my air compressor, and then used a spray lube to lubricate.
Great video to give me the confidence to tear into my Shimano 21 speed shifter. I was only getting 3 "clicks" out of the shifter and couldn't access the lower gears. Took out the 2 screws, hit it with WD-40 and got all 7 back. Followed up with some spray grease and my bike was back fully mission capable. Thanks for the tip!
useful. i had already tried unsticking the adjuster screws on the front & rear derailleur of my older 🚲 bike. it worked for exactly one ride, and then snapped back to its bad habits . i will try this & report back
Hi. Thanks for the video . I just bought a bike with the same shifters. (Huffy Ironman Titanuum Boron ) . Do you know what model the shifters are ? I would also like to know what model derailleur s work with these shifters in case I need to replace mine. Thanks again for the video .
Thank you for the vid. It worked . Do you report to see if the bike was was ripped off from someone and just discarded by the thief. Or was it "so sad too bad ,I scored "
Update:have managed to get rear gears working all the way through. Thanks for the help! Unfortunately I cannot get the the front cog working on the smallest cog. I think it's because the gear cable is so short it is not allowing the derailleur to fall back to that position.
@@PedroAniceto the cable is quite short so it barely connects with the adjustment mechanism. It stops the derailleur moving completely to the left. I'm going to get a new cable for it.
May i ask where can i buy that kind of shifter? i have a shifter like that but the problem is that the indicator is broken. I want to replace the indicator.
2:55 I had a Focus mountain bike with a similar gear system. It was excellent and I never had a problem with it. I would recommend Focus bikes if you have the money. Their road bikes are expensive though.

This is probably the clearest imagery on this topic of thumb shifters showing the pawls moving.. Thanks
My gears on an old bike have been shot for ages this sorted it in 10mins thanks

Awesome, the only RUclips video I could find that explained the problem I was having with my bike.
Thank you so much. That was exactly what was wrong with my shifter. I tried everything and then fixed it in minutes with your great video instructions.

Thank you so much. I was tinkering with EVERYTHING on the gears. I was about to Amazon a new shifter when I saw this video! Saved me some $$!

Nice, I didn't know begians know british in belgium!
Thanks for the video! Just used this method on a 1995 Raliegh Max and it is working like a dream now.

I thought my shifters were toast but this worked like a charm, thanks man
me too! I was close to thinking I had to replace shifters, etc...but your video was the remedy needed! thanks so very much!
J, you made me see the light... (Had opened the upper cover but could not understand what was wrong...). Thank you so much. Greetings from Europe

Awesome job. The old simple shift lever back in the 70’s- 80’s worked so much easier.
Newbie looking vid however it solved the problem without having to do any of the complex stuff the pro vids recommend. Love The University of RUclips!
What a brilliant video!!! I have exactly the same problem, followed the video and now it works!! Thanks very much
thanks so much mate this fixed it perfectly in less than 5 minutes after i’ve spent hours of frustration searching else where
Thank you! I just found out today my bike gears are having the same problem.
Watched 5 different videos and this is the one that fixed my problem. Thank you.
Had the exact same shifters and brakes on my dad's bike. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for your great video. I’m Fixing up a bike from the thrift store and it had been sitting outside. Your great info got me going again.
exactly the problem I had with Shimano shifters on my bike. Solution worked well, thanks
Thanks! This stopped me from replacing a set of shifters. 🎉🎉🎉
Many thanks, I was skeptical, but this worked on my Ridgeback!
this was exactly what I needed to help me fix a cheap bike I got at goodwill. literally exactly the same problem. thanks for the video.
Messing with a friends bike who had the same exact issue with the exact same shifters. Finally fixed! Thanks!
Thanks ! Perfect solution for this exact problem on our 2 mountain bikes, now working great !
I just had exactly the same problem and I mean exactly. Your video and fix worked perfectly. Thank you!!!
Easy explanation. I'm going to try my gears tomorrow, but, the only difference for my bike, the shifter doesn't click at all. It just happened today.
Yo thanks dude, was already searching to buy new gear for my bike, luckily i found ur simple solution, now it works
Nice job on the explanation! Super helpful and I think inspiring for even the non mechanically inclined. Keep up the good work.

Thanks man. Fixed mine in 5 min. Thank you and God bless.
I have the exact same gear mechanism on my old bike and this video helped a lot. Thanks
seems to be the same problem on my peugeot! didnt try it yet, but cleared up my understanding of how shifter actually works :D
great video :)

Very informative and thank you, Sir!

finally something usefull. Thanks!
It worked! Thank you.
Thank you you have saved the day.
thank you bro. I fix my bick gear after watching ur vid .❤
Wouldn't the gears jammed when changing it without paddling?
4:06 WD40 start up
I have this exact problem with my bike as well. Will give it a try.
Update:have managed to get rear gears working all the way through. Thanks for the help!

That very how do you deassemble and reassemble it
dude thank you... I was about to drop 50 bucks on new shifters
Thanks a lot! I got a bike with the exact same gear, and the exact same problem. Now it works like a charm! +++++
excellent, thanks for the advice.
Awesome !
Fixing stuff is the best feeling:)
Thank you, saved me some money
It worked for me - thanks! 😀
Dude! Thanks!
You mention putting grease in, but where do you put it?
Pretty much all over the gears, where ever they make contact with something or friction is made
You helped me.. thanks!
Very helpful! Thank you!
It helped me a lot.thank you.i am from peru.
absolute legend! thanks
Where i found de uper CAP !!??
Me parking my car next to the dumpster.
This guy: HEY GUYS I JUDT FOUND A CAR NEXT TO THE DUMPSTER
I'm working on a bike with a similar problem. I'm able to shift gears yet the shifters go back to their original position
Thanks for the help
OMG Freddy Mercury.
Joke aside - thanks man.
If you can not free up the pawl after using a solvent I have used boiling water…never fails. A little more messy if you leave the shifter on the bike…
2:55 I had a Focus mountain bike with a similar gear system. It was excellent and I never had a problem with it. I would recommend Focus bikes if you have the money. Their road bikes are expensive though.
Not working for me :( I really want to go on a bike ride it’s so hot outside
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Are you still active on this account? I need help with a shifter. The under side.
brah i tot my derailleur was the problem. tks g
Should have kept those curtains in the dumpster.
I was about to do my gear shifts when someone stole my bike
Thank You very much.
