They think in linear time scale but these changes are exponentional. It is obvious now, but that time just few scientists and bright people have understood the mechanics of such changes without strong evidence. (Limits of growth for example.)
I think they have transited from denial to (a kind of) anger.
I am very pessimist about our future. It is like if you would drink a lot strong alcoholic drink very fast, you would be dead because of alcohol poisoning, but not instantly. We have drunk too much carbon-dioxide.

An opportunity to be present at this discussion with one of our generations great wildlife and nature broadcasters! Without a doubt, evolution by natural selection has missed this young man! You gotta feel sorry for David Attenborough for having to talk to these desk-jockey crooks that have lived large and have looked the other way for decades while the natural world is ground to dust for profit. I think Attenborough knows how dire a situation we are truly in but he is also smart enough to know that if he told his audience the true state of the ecosystem, which is that it is in irreversible collapse at present (not at December 31st 2099 folks), then they would really put him on trial for heresy against the free market infinite growth paradigm.
Its really just a matter of asking which will go down first, the global civilization or the ecosystems of the Earth and if you read the literature on the feedback loops that follow from either you would conclude very quickly that short of a miracle can halt the chaos that is not too far off.

"We need money" - what about the $496bn spent on fossil fuel subsidies globally each year? What about the £30m spent by BP on greenwashing campaigns to suggest they're investing in renewables when they've only actually put 3% aside for renewable growth for the next decade?
If we move those subsidies and grow the green market, we can accelerate our innovations, coupled with changes to how we all consume (e.g. fast fashion, where we get our food from, reduce, reuse, recycle) 2025 is achievable but we have to ACT NOW.
The IPCC report (Oct 2018) is fairly conservative - not taking into account feedback loops or potential tipping points - with more recent evidence suggesting we have between 5-8 years to become carbon neutral.

    Agree fully with sir David.
As an Australian freediver with decades of diving hours on the surrounding reefs of Australia, the bleaching, destruction, silt and death of corals is immense.
In saying that, those who prosper from contributing will spend unlimited amounts of time, effort and funds in continuing to ignore climate change.

Exxon knew 50 years ago - the maths was in 100 years ago. Physics is physics and politics is politics... especially fossil fuelled politics. I'm glad he's more aware now... but it was easy to turn a blind eye 50 years ago or 40 years ago - or 30 years ago. But now those predictions for the 'future' which were made 50 years ago, are coming to pass. All fossil fuels need to be carbon taxed - and the money spent on renewables for every home, community, town, and city... and on electrification of all transport including flight... and it needs to happen yesterday!

@Primal Magic it's been happening forever (economic shifts that is). Every 40-50 years there is a 'new' global reserve currency.
Not sure why you brought that up? But - once the fossil fuel companies are no more, then the money & power they wield will be no more +or rather will be distributed amongst the people. The fossil fuel corporations have been corrupting politicians for as long as they could get away with it.
But once we all have solar PV systems on our rooftops & drive EVs they will lose trillions. But where will those trillions go? Well - they will stay in our pockets as 'savings' on energy bills & petrol station costs. That is a socio-economic transformation, as well as being a plus for the planet. And we'll all be better off - both economically & environmentally.

    • @ExploreLearnEnglishWithGeorge

it is the same old story...somebody just wanted to make profit. And now humanity is facing extinction in long run (80 years), and mass migration, starvation and wars for resources in short term (within a 20/30 years horizon).

    • @ejbh3160
      @ejbh3160 4 года назад

@@ExploreLearnEnglishWithGeorge I don't think our extinction will come from climate change. More likely from having too few babies.
Wherever development has led to a better quality of life - for women in particular - the TFR (Total Fertility Rate) has fallen dramatically. If we aspire to a world without poverty then we need to realise something.
In the UK the TFR has been below 2.2 since 1974. Wherever development takes place in the world, the TFR falls after an initial baby boom. Only the fact we live longer (& that baby boom) has hidden the underlying fall in population. But once the baby boom generation(s) (pre-74 for the UK) starts to die off (i.e. over the next 30-40 years), there will be a fall in population (a coffin boom) which is - of course - just as fast as it was a baby boom growth in population when they were born 80-90 years previously. Once they are all dead, the world will be left with a population that is shrinking rapidly. 10 generations of one child families is an extinction level event.
Immigration is the only thing that has been filling the jobs gap in the UK caused by a 45 years long fall in TFR (& retiring later also helps fill that gap & pay for all those extra baby boom pensioners - living longer means you can work longer for the banks). But ultimately if we achieve the goal of bringing mankind out of poverty, then not having enough children to sustain a population will be the most likely cause of our extinction.

These people are our elected Government... and it's the policies (growth at all costs, subsidising the fossil fuel industries, etc.) our Governments have adopted for the past 20 years or more that have helped to create the situation we are now in. It's pretty clear what needs to be done.

To those commenting that he s on trial, this definitely isn't a trial - if anything it looks like an education session that seeks to understand where we stand today and how to move forward, taking into account public opinion and not ending up like france and its yellow vests.
Those are definitely not trial questions, he is not assisted by a lawyer which would be almost mandatory if interrogated by a commission, and no accused ever has a visitor badge around his neck.

Well you know - the outcome will either be we survive this climate crisis or we do not. The planet will recover and restore itself after we are gone. Some species will survive and different species will evolve. So in the end if we do not do enough before the tipping point which nature itself doesn't probably even know...the last laugh will be on us. And that is a consolation to me. Nature's balance.

I always admired Sir David Attenborough he brought the beauty of the natural wild life of this planet right to my young me.
He simply never fails to inspire the curiosity of the intellect in a person.
The involvement of Sir David Attenborough gives me a light of hope in the distance.. (cos honestly when you look at the facts and figures we're pretty fkd...within a couple of decades we'll be faced with the madness of a planet with failing life supporting ecosystems and if we fail to get on top of this existential challenge and the planet heats up above 4'C there are scientists who are convinced that's a path to a Terra-formation in the style of "Earth to Venus" transformation = acid rain and nothing alive/another sterile planet in our solar system.)
