One of the most common questions I get is how to size your Etsy printables or how to size your digital wall art. You can easily achieve this with Canva. The answer is simple! I'm trying to figure how to use this with 3D tumbler wraps...The biggest size file I need is 10x9.4 but the images created are big (midjourney) is the resizing process the same to go smaller so the images aren't warped? Great video, super helpful! On my Canva under PDF Print it has an option for RGB or CMYK. Which do you recommend? Thank you.
Most places will print using CMYK but it entirely depends on the print pkace. RGB is mainly used for computer display
good video for resizing photos. I did the free trial in canva the first of Jan, but still have the crown on the resize tab. I did the resizing with the free version, but when i went to download there was only 1 pic. Was I supposed to save them after each resizing? Ill try again, its really difficult to see a difference in the pic after resizing. Looking forward to other videos from you.

Thanks for this! i started all my designs at A3 So when im resizing to other ratios parts of the design are cut off or not centered etc as ISO sizes are quite a thin long size and other ratios tend to be wider do i have to manually move the elements around to make them look like the original i was hoping there would be a way it would automatically do it, not as magic resizing as they make out lol Also i read most customers want JPEG as printing shops usually ask for that have you noticed any customers say that? and would i just simply upload the PDF to a converter and list that? i did test it with A3 but the A3 PDF was huge when i opened it but the jpeg seemed small which has confused me even further lol, One last Question for a 2x3 ratio size 20x30inch it says i nee 6000x9000 pixels to get a 300dpi image but canva doesnt go up that high, would downloading the image at 20x30 and a PDF automatically make it a 300dpi? no matter what inch size print i put in even something absolutely massive would it still be 300dpi as long as its PF format? hope all that makes sense my brain is seriously frazzled with all this lol thank you!
Best video on this subject I found! One question - if I have a square pdf image file, since it is vector-based could it theoretically be printed in any larger size? Not sure what size to offer or claim it can be printed at in my Etsy listing. 30"x30", 50"x50", etc?
Yes you can! If th file it vector based it should not lose any quality by sizing it up or down

Most places do need JPG to print from what I can tell so it entirely depends on the end customer

This was a great video thank you! Liked and subscribed! Question...if I created my designs in Canva at the default 16x20 size, can I resize to larger sizes or am I stuck at 16x20 and smaller? Getting ready to resize for the first time (I am brand new at all of this!)
I wouldn't recommend sizing up in Canva. You would need something like Photoshop or an upscaler

I did end up resizing up in Canva (haven't listed anything yet though)... they seem to look ok when I view in Adobe Acrobat (I exported as PDFs). Is there a way to check? This was SUPER helpful. Thank you so much! I am still learning a lot and made all my digital prints. I just don't understand how to word it when I am uploading to my Etsy. If I am offering the 4 main sizes in pdf form, how would I say that they are able to resize to smaller if needed? Is that even possible? And Do they just get all 4 sizes when purchasing?

I believe you can only do that on the Pro version but I'm not entirely sure

Helpful video! Why is it that you can make your printable in an 18x24 inch (as you did in the video) and then can resize it bigger to a 24x36inch size? Don't the elements overstretch (even if they're at 300 DPI)? I thought one had to make from the biggest size and then do down. Can you educate me? Secondly, if my png clipart element is of a pixel dimension that only gets as big as say 10 inches in size, if I resize my canva canvas, again, doesn't my png element get overstretched and pixelated? I realized a vector element would resize fine, but not a png necessarily-- is this right?
I should note this is only good for files easily resized. I have an updated video for 2021 resizing printables and it goes through resizing SVGs AND PNGs (or JPEGs basically raster images) and it is different. You would need to create your graphics in the largest possible size but would still need to crop at a smaller size. Does that make sense?? Great video. Should I add crop and bleed marks to all digital prints (5x7; 8x10.....) or just the larger sizes like 11x14 and 16x20? Should I offer both jpg and pdf? Thank you.
I think either JPEG or PDF would be fine. If you offer both the file sizes may be too much for Etsy and then you're dealing with Dropbox or Google drive links

Ratios will work find just instead of doing a 2:3 do a 3:2 Does that make sense?
So a 5x7 would be sized at 7x5 for landscape, correct?

If you are checking the JPEG files to ensure they are in fact 300 DPI with your converter then you are good to go my friend!

PDF is vector based so it will always have a better quality image
Thanks so much for this , very helpful , I’m from Europe so the iso sizes are important but confusing! Could you do a similar video talking us through the iso sizes from a1 onwards using actual images, I’m not understanding 5x7inches in the same category as a1,a2,a3 ect what international iso sizes do I need to offer and from what size do I scale them down from on Canva pro.your size chart is fantastic, for me the step by step Canva videos are the best. Before watching your videos I started uploading listings with a 5 file jpeg of 16x20 , 18x24, 24x36, 5x7 and 11x14 but after looking at other shops they offer A1,A2,A3,A4,A5 what are those sizes on Canva ? Any help on this would be great , I find this all very confusing until watching your videos , now I’m starting to understand. I don’t want to continue listing the 5 file jpeg of these measurements especially after hearing that unless I save them in pdf print they won’t be 300 pdi , which most are offering of the highest quality ! Now I ask myself do I delete the 8 listings I have and start again or can they be changed! Sorry for so many questions ! And thanks again 😊
Don't delete the listings you can easily just change the listing uploads on the back end. My advice is to not over complicate the process. I recommend providing the most popular sizes and stating you can provide additional sizes as needed
The best tutorials I found on YT, thanks! I started Etsy digital prints for babies and noticed that when I resized my design it got distorted, not centered and some parts of design appear smaller leaving white space between edge of paper (idk if I make sense) but how do I adjust the design so it fits every size without it looking different/ disproportionate. I tried manually move things around but then looked at 5 sizes and design was jumping around 😔
First thank you for the kind comment! Secondly you want to make sure your aspect ratios are locked when you reaize. If not (since we are working with raster based images) your pixels will get stretched and distorted. If you lock the aspect ratio then the pixels will stretch evenly and it should eliminate the blur.

Hey guys, I need help with my listenings. I just started selling my artwork on Etsy, and I can't seem to figure out the best canvas size to use for my illustrations in procreate, that will fulfill the 1:1, 2:3, 3:4, and 4:5 print ratios that I see most art stores using to sell their artwork. Currently I draw on a 16" x 20" canvas, and I was wondering if this size is sufficient to scale for printing all the mentioned ratio sizes? Thanks for much in advance for your response.
I would offer the 16x20 and maybe provide resizing as an option if people are looking for a different size. It's harder with art work (especially if it takes up the entire page) as resizing can cause some of the image to be cropped out

You definitely want a transparent background for PNG at 300 DPI. I'm not 100% sure what you're asking as Canva does not export in SVG (nor can it) as it is a raster based application. When you are selling SVGs I always recommend providing at a minimum DXF, SVG, PNG, and JPEG. How are you designing your SVGs?
ShootingStarSVG I use canva for everything, download the art as pdf print then use a website converter that makes it 300dpi png. But I’m confused with the svg part . I found this website to convert to svg but it made the image extremely large so I’m just trying to fix that problem
I would not recommend using s converter to create SVGs. If you're serious about selling you should use a program to create SVGs then export. Like Inkscape which is free.

This is all new to me but I have decided I will be doing digital prints to sell on Etsy. When you resize, if you did 1 ratio dimension, can that ratio dimension be adjusted to different sizes? For example, taken from an Etsy listing:
"FILE 2 - 3:4 ratio for printing
Inch: 6x8, 9x12, 12x16, 15x20, 18x24
Cm: 15*20, 22*30, 30*40, 38*50, 45*60"
Would I need to do a dimension for all the sizes in the 3:4 ratio or can I do one for each RATIO and the buyer or printing company can adjust the size of the print within that ratio? Hope this makes sense.
Hey Jodi, if I'm making sense of what you're asking then no you would not need to create all ratios in the 3:4 as the example is. You would need to create the 18x24 which is the biggest ratio and then the customer can size down from there.

Resizing in INCH is similar to pixel? Meaning if i resize to 24 x 36inch will i still get 300 dpi?

I have a square photo of a bouquet of flowers but I want to offer say 11 x 14 because the photo is square, how do I make it fit the 11 x 14 without all the leaves on the outside of the picture disappear because I am trying to make a square into a rectangle? Hope this makes sense. I'm using Canva as well. I only want to offer the bouquet of flowers on my 11 x 14 not several items. Suggestions?
This is always a tough one. Since it's square the only way you can do this is resize and mat or crop the image. An alternate solution is to use content aware fill on photoshop which in this case would not help since you are using Canva - I wish there was a better answer

This video was super helpful! I feel a bit more confident with creating different size printables now. I am, however, a tad confused with sizes and corresponding DPI. For example, I created an 8x10 inch printable in Canva. When I go to download it as a jpg, the size is 1,600 x 2,000 px. Does this mean that it is not 300DPI. If I change the size to 2400 x 3,000 px (300 DPI) when downloading from Canva does this keep the size of the jpg file at 8x10 inches but with a 300 DPI? Or would it also change the size of the file in terms of inches. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
You created an 8x10 inch image in Canva, and when you downloaded it as a JPG, the size was 1600x2000 pixels. This means that the DPI is around 200 (1600 pixels / 8 inches = 200 DPI; 2000 pixels / 10 inches = 200 DPI). This DPI value is a bit lower than the standard 300 DPI for high-quality printing. If you change the image size to 2400x3000 pixels and download it from Canva, with the intent of achieving 300 DPI, the image would indeed be suitable for high-quality printing. This would give you an 8x10 inch image at 300 DPI. Importantly, this change in pixel dimensions wouldn't change the physical size of the image in inches; it would just increase the number of pixels, resulting in a higher DPI.

I'm not *entirely* sure but I do believe that they do not limit sizes on their platform.

This video is so helpful! Sorry I have some questions - I downloaded an 8x10 and 11x14 wall art on canva and used pdf but I noticed that the MB of my 8x10 is larger than my 11x14. What did I do wrong? Lastly, I want to convert my pdf to jpg as well to give customers options. Can I open my pdf file in adobe acrobat and just click "file-save as- jpeg"? Thank you for your help!
No worries everyone has questions and it is always ok to ask! Is it the same design you are saving but in different sizes?? I wouldn't say you did anything wrong at all. I do not believe you can save PDF to JPEG to acrobat (but I am not sure) you can give it a try. You can also use an online converter to accomplish that
I'm confused about this too. All the ones I saved in PDF format show actual size correctly, but the ones I saved in JPG from Canva seem really large. I thought there would be more of a size difference between the 11x14 & 8x10 etc. I guess I'm a newbie and don't really understand dimensions. Why is when I click to view actual size of jpeg, it's huge but not when I do with PDF? I know I'm dumb when it comes to this, but I need answers 🤣 did you figure out your problem??
Hi! Just curious, I’ve purchased some 1” round images on Etsy. She informed me I could resize them to smaller sizes myself using Canva. If there are multiple images on 1 sheet how can I resize these into smaller sizes like 1/2”?
What file type did this person provide? If they are all on 1 sheet and need to be resized down to 1/2" I would try to reduce the page by 50% and see if that prints how you need it to be printed. Does that make sense?

Thank you for this info! I am just getting started and wondering: Say I want to open my Etsy shop with 10 offerings of digital wall art. But I want to offer each one in 7 sizes (to include American and International). What is the entire process? Magic Resize them all... download each size individually to PDF Print... convert each one individually to JPEG at high res? Or is there a quicker way to batch download and convert all the different sizes? Thank you so much you are awesome!
Sadly I don't think there is an easy way except make your 7 biggest ratios, download 7 times, convert 7 times and ZIP them to sell. Sucks but it's all part of the process.

Is it possible to resize in batches . For instance I have like 100 images do I have to resize them one by one or can I resize like 5 at a time all at 11 x14 and download them all in one zip file
You can do more than one with canva pro

I recommend looking at the printable size chart. You can set the dimensions to those sizes based on the chart in IN or CM

Create the largest size of the ratio and provide that. Just ensure your listing description states the ratio and size provided and that they can scale down as needed

I am struggling so much right now. Like so much.. I've been spending days trying to figure this out to make sure I don't mess up. I don't want to upload anything wrong or have pixely art. I dont own a printer so I am just doing all the research I can to make sure I get this right. I can only draw on a 3000x4000 canvas on my Tablet. So I am not sure if, taking that file and sizing up on Canva, to get the larger 2:3 24x36 Will make my work look bad (?) Or if I should just only Offer smaller size prints, to ensure DPI is at 300.
DPI and Ratios are becoming my Kryptonite
DPI is dots per inch or what your printer is printing. PPI is pixels per inch or what your computer screen is seeing. Do you know what DPI you are saving your images in? It doesn't hurt to save at a smaller ratio but I think it entirely depends on what you are drawing and selling. If you care to elaborate with some image exampels in the FB group I would be happy to help
Hello, thanks for the valuable information, much appreciated. My issue with Canva PDF files is the vast white space around the image. The image appears like a small island in the file and I'll have to crop every image, which is super pain. Is there a workaround to this? I looked on Google but can't find any.. 😰
What are you trying to resize? Full page prints?
@@ShootingStarSVG Resizing my art files (jpg and png) to various sizes given in your video. But the white space behind the image (work space where your image appears on canva, before Resizing) also is saved. So the PDF has big white background which I want to avoid. Hope you got it now.
Also, I noticed that the converted file sizes are not accurate. For instance, a 20x16 is 20x 14.7 and 36 x 24 is 36x 26.3 and so forth. Have you faced this? Wouldn't it impact the printout size?
1. you have already created 18x24 which is small compared to 24x36 right? when resizing it the quality of the image won't get disturbed?
2. I want to create in all the sizes as yu shown in the video...
from what size have to resize to get all the images without the quality disturbance?

That's right in this video I am working from an 18x24. In the case of wanting to start large you would have to work with your highest ratio (like 24x36 for example) and size down from there. Does that make sense?

Hello I know I’m kinda late but since this video was created over a year ago do you still stand by using PDF instead of jpeg? Because I did some research and almost every successful Etsy seller is using JPEG for their Digital prints.
Never late always on time! I still do yes PDF is superior quality
Although a lot of print places don't take PDF so it entirely depends on what your product is

Yes that will happen if you are using full scale images and sadly unless you are providing a mat around the photo there can be some cropping concerns. I wish I had a better answer for this :(

You can use a bulk mockup generator for that or create an action in photoshop
Is there any reason you can think of that the pasting wouldn't work in Canva because no matter what I do it won't paste my design in my new canvas?

Only pro can resize multiple at once. It may or may not be as that wiill increase the size a bit.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Most people will print out one size on a sheet unless you are printing multiple of one design and in that case the end user should be able to handle that

You downloaded from the website? It should be in a .pdf and easily printable and able to zoom in on.

Does it matter if the source images are PNG? Will resizing still keep the quality?
Do you mean when the end user resizes after you resize?
Or do you mean physically resizing your images in canva?
For option 1 - you create the biggest size of the ratio so when the customer sizes down no quality will be lost.
For option 2 - the canvas is resizing and placing your image on the canvas to the best of it's ability. As long as your aspect ratio is locked you shouldn't be resizing the images much therefore I do not believe you would have a loss of quality issue.

I’m on the free version when I try to resize it gives me a blank page, I go to file - create new design - custom dimensions - put the size and it’s just gives me a blank page. What am I going wrong? You also said copy it how do you do that?
So on your original canvas you would have to select your design and copy it (CTRL+C on windows)
You created your new size as you need to, you just need to copy your design in the new page (CTRL+V)

I have another question...how can I make my exported PDF files uneditable for buyers? I clicked on the "READ ONLY" on the "properties" tab, but it is still editable when I open it in Adobe. Help!
