NJ Devils 2024 NHL Draft Lottery Discussion & Thoughts

- The NHL will be holding it's Draft Lottery on Tuesday Night 5/7.
I discuss the Devils chances at moving from their current #10 spot, as well as some past lottery wins and my vision for what the team should do with the pick.

Absolutely would trade the pick for Thachuck....you get him, and hey may even get Nico to drop the gloves and hit more....and then when your captain starts doing it, everyone does....and that is EXACTLY what the Devils need.
@jamesvalenti9288 It would likely take more than just the pick to get Tkachuk, and I would be comfortable with doing it. A guy like that makes everyone around him elevate their games.
As a scout for Draft Prospects Hockey this draft is ideal for Defenders and centers
100 percent agree, unless we hit the number 1 overall, we should be trading our pick in a goalie/d man trade.
@jschmitz1712 I would still trade the #1 if it helped us land Tkachuk
NJD also won the draft lottery in 2011 to draft Adam Larsson. NJD fans really got nothing to complain about when it comes to the lotto luck. I'll be happy if they just don't move down.

You have become my "go to" guy for Devils content. Love your take on things....You are definitely a fan and come at it from a fan's perspective, but you are logical and have the facts, too. Well done, sir.
Do you think the pick has more value to Ottawa BEFORE the lottery or after? Before, The Sens would have additional percentages to get the 1 OA. afterward, Unless things go nuts in the Universe, we are at 10 - 12. Plus, The Sens might not be interested in any deal for Thachuck if they get the 1 OA. I would love to hear your thoughts.
@MichaelSmith-gt3ip I appreciate that, and thanks for watching. I think the value difference between the #10 and #3, #2 or #1 picks is too great for any team to deal the pick until after the lottery. The Senators definitely do not want to trade Brady. But I think their hand can be forced with a lucrative offer and/or Brady saying he wants off the sinking ship. I hope Fitz is as least exploring this.

I would trade any other pick but #1. Draft Celebrini just in case Jack’s shoulder doesn’t heal properly or it puts him out long term.
Devils have other pieces to make a deal with. Plus any top 10 pick is a pretty good bargaining chip to add to a deal.
I bet the Leafs end up with Saros.
They may even end up with Brady.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Right now I’m 100% with my Bracket picks. Just need Dallas to win tonight.
I find it dumb that the second round starts before the 1st round ends. Nice scheduling NHL.
@TravelinDevil76 I would trade the #1 anyway. We do have plenty of other pieces to make a deal with, but that would be ultra attractive. I can see the Leafs blowing it up and going after a bunch of different guys; Saros and Tkachuk included. That is my biggest fear: that they get in on the potential Brady Sweepstakes. I am 100% with my bracket as well, and I have VEGAS moving on! Should be a great game.
I'd be interested in drafting Anton Silayev a big 6'7" DFD who skates like he's 5'7", Sam Dickinson is also interesting he's 6'3" but looks like more of an all around Nemec, McAvoy TWD type. Otherwise yeah I'd be ok with using the pick in a trade.
Silayev is high on my list if we draft with the pick. I am really hoping we trade the pick for WIN NOW pieces.
Man, to think that Nico is already 25 years old. When you put it that way, makes it tough even if we do get the 1, 2, or 3 draft picks.

@topjimmy72 No chance for me; this pick should not be used to get a goalie. I would take Markstrom if it came down to it. I would not give nearly what I was willing to give midseason when I would have been looking to make the playoffs. Now that ship sailed, I am way less interested. I have my eye on some more budget friendly goalies.

We need to MAKE the Tkachuk trade happen. Use the draft pick as leverage, and get Brady. I've said it before and I'll say it again... I will happily donate a kidney to get Brady Tkachuk, he is literally everything this team is missing - grit, size, passion, anger, goals, fists 😎 if we could somehow bring Ullmark in as well... I think I'll cry with joy 😁
@steverobinson8771 Brady Tkachuk is one of my favorite non Devils in the entire league. His brother Matthew as well. They are complete throwback players. There are some other goalie options out there I like as well.

Just remember how bad we missed on Bo Horvat. Was told by a source that Brady Tkachuk is not up for a trade. Jakob Chychrun is for trade.
@headsuphockeypodcast2707 I am not losing sleep over Horvat. The reality is, if we got Bo Horvat instead of Schneider, would that really have helped the franchise longterm?!? The team was so bad for so long....and now Horvat makes $8.5. I think we can find much better usage of that money in Free Agency this summer. Everyone can say X player is not up for trade. All it takes is an "offer they can't refuse" OR Brady telling management he wants out. I will have my fingers crossed on this one for eternity.

Brady Tkchuk all the way. He would totally help Devils to be more physical and aggressive. Star goalie would be nice but Brady would rally the troops. Nico is a great guy but I think he is just too soft on rallying the troops.
@973Luca973 Brady is the player that would singlehandedly improve this team the most. We will get a goalie for sure. He may not be the "name" people want...

Id trade the pick for sure. And im with you on Tkachuk. I also want a veteran defensive defenseman. A Forsling type guy. Curious who you would want and who you think we can get.
@bted The pick even at our current #10 is a nice piece to include in a potential deal for Tkachuk. There are a lot of decent defensemen available in Free Agency. Fitz better get busy!

Dont forget Brady has family ties to Fitzgerald and his wife is from the Jersey shore. It could work.

All these years and I can’t figure out how the draft lottery works. For instance what is keeping the Sharks getting a high pick and not fall to the 16th pick? If it’s a lottery, how are the odds in favor of SJ getting the 1,2 or 3 pick, and nothing worse?

@SteelerMarty Celebrini will be a good player, but how quick will his development be?!? We saw how it took Jack some time, and other players as well. (Alexis Lafreniere et) I am looking for win NOW guys. The perpetual rebuild needs to turn into a perpetual Cup contender. The #10, Mercer and Casey is a solid offer for Tkachuk. They might want slightly more in value or a modification to that. (Holtz instead of Casey?) But I think something along those lines could get it done. I do it without hesitation. Brady Tkachuk transforms this team overnight.

@djentleman7 I finished the First Round 7-1. I really wanted the perfection. Vegas blew a 2-0 series lead. Pathetic.
Yep. This was the hardest series to pick a winner of for me at least. Ultimately I knew Dallas was good but I figured Vegas with so many acquisitions were so stacked they'd be hard to beat. Eichel coulsnt bury that bsckhand after dangling people, probably would have seen an OT if that landed. Dallas deserved it though, they were faster and more dangerous overall. Stankhoven is like Holtz on crack lol.
@djentleman7 I thought the LTIR spending champs were going to win for sure. Pete F'ing DeBoer now 8-0 in Game 7's. What a willdddddd stat.
@@runninwiththedevilsYea that's an absurd stat. What do you think about going after Tavares which will cost around 900k? Net front kind of player for cheap could be a nice pickup. Marner is for sure gone but Tavares I could see working really well on this team actually.

I can see NJ trading there first round pick. I hop that will be the Flames, Markstrom for 1 and some other players on roaster. I think that deal will be done. I don't know if Ottawa will traded Tkachuck. But Flames might still trade Marstrome.
@andrewsick9003 no way Fitz trades the pick for Markstrom alone. If we do get Markstrom, I don’t think our pick is part of the deal. I can only hope for Tkachuk
Think Markstrom could be had for less than a 1st round pick now. Flames missed that opportunity imo
@SteelerMarty I would take Markstrom, but at this point I think there are some other more sensible options. I wanted him this year leading up to the playoffs because I thought he would have salvaged the season. Now that we have missed the playoffs, I may go in another direction.

I don't think NJ needs to go after tkachuk. Defense and goaltending needs to be the focal point.
@NJDEVSPARISE9 You are crazy. Brady Tkachuk is everything this team needs. You can go for Brady and still address the other issues with the roster.
@runninwiththedevils Crazy.... what was the big factor last season compared to season prior. It definitely wasn't having a guy like Brady. Come on now I know you're smarter than that. It was losing guys like severson and Graves,ad well as marino take alittle step backwards. Not to mention having goalies that couldnt make saves when needed. Brady won't help those two areas. I think getting saros or trading for a more defensive Dman would be more beneficial personally.
@NJDEVSPARISE9 Yes, the defense and goalie need to be upgraded....for sure. No doubt. But have you watched any of the playoffs?!? This team is not built for WAR. Brady Tkachuk is a war general. Our team was beaten and battered ALL SEASON LONG. You cannot win in this league with that type of identity as a team. We are arguably the SOFTEST team in the league. A guy like Brady Tkachuk immediately changes the DNA of the team. Saros is going to cost too much to obtain, and then cost a ton to sign longterm. While I would love him here, I think there are cheaper alternatives that would give us the flexibility to truly address all of the other problem areas.
Sam Dickinson, TJ Iginla either or is an absolute STEAL for this Devils roster. Dickinson built for the playoffs NHL ready next year
If Flames picked before Devils, TJ could be draft before that.
