  • The theory is that the wind can get so strong in a tropical hurricane that it can blow a piece of straw through a palm tree trunk. Only this time, they do it with more devastating speed and accuracy than in Mythbusters history!
Using science as a tool, Hollywood special effects experts attempt to debunk rumours, urban legends and popular myths that have captivated the minds of many individuals.

I need someone to outline Robert Lee's (the narrator) journey to the bizarre range of accents that make up his unique way of speaking.
He says words such as "car" like a Canadian Maritimer. I've heard Adam say he is Canadian. But he also pronounces words like "fertile" like an American: "fertle." He adds an intrusive "R" when he says things like "... the idea is...", making it "... the idear is..." like a Brit, Aussie, or Kiwi. He pronounces "HQ" as "haytch cue" like a cartoon Cockney. I could go on. Suffice to say, as far as I can tell, he's a Canadian-American-Australian-Englishman.

There's a few things that weren't considered in this experiment.
They only used short pieces of straw when a longer piece would have more weight behind it.
Another problem I thought was that in a hurricane the tree would be blown around, bent and stressed in many ways which could loosen the fibres in the trunk weakening its structure.
There's probably more I haven't thought of too.

9:54 Grant's right, plants do have feelings and can scream!
I love that he knew that!
(Edit:) Oh, he's basing it on shaky ideas as opposed to the scientific research that does show this. My grandpa, a scientist, researcher, and professor in the field of agriculture knew this when I was little (many) years ago. 😊
If you who are reading this comment are curious, look up "The Nature of Things" episode "What Trees Talk About" by scientist and science communicator David Suzuki & the CBC where the researcher they interview discusses this... she's spoken of as having discovered this for the first time which irks me given my grandpa knew, but I'm glad one of the many things he knew but didn't have the time to write a paper about, is finally becoming better known. 🙂

When they were editing this episode and included the sequence where they complain about the producers wanting the palm tree changed for one more accurate to the myth, I wonder if they realised how _bad_ a look for Jamie and Adam this was. Like, the producers are being fairly reasonable in expecting that the myths they're testing are being tested under the most accurate conditions they can replicate, but Jamie and Adam are griping and making out the producers are being unreasonable because "We spent a long time putting the wrong palm tree down range".
