I used to work for an oil service company (BHI) and was taught that if the wireline was on the ground with tools in the well held by a tool clamp, you always stepped on the cable and never stepped over the cable. The reason being that if the tool clamp slipped, there could be up to 10000 lbs of tools dropping and suddenly placing tension on the cable, whipping it up. If you were standing on it, it would throw you but with a foot on either side, it would cut you up like a cheese wire. Safest option was to walk behind the logging skid or truck but not always feasible.
In a industrial environment Jamie 10 cars weight is almost nothing. Try shipping as in oil rigs or cranes or anything that is not in a private garage. Like 200-600 tons! It will cut you in half. And 10 other men.
Yeah, that's kinda next level even for them, I would give more chances the cable looping around, can actually cut better than only the end. Also cable cart cable can rip right through things when snapped, saw a 🚠 slashed with it, tearing hole in the metal.
The weight of the cable also has to be factored in, but that said I was there when a fencing wire snapped and 30 metres away a heffer had her front leg ripped off at the knee. What a horrific sound. Tension, weight, velocity, it's dangerous.

I spent 4 years on Navy minesweepers that pulled hundreds of meters of steel cable behind them under incredible stress and I saw what snapped cables could do to steel I am quite confident had one of my crewmates been in the way they would have been parted from limbs and or torsos.
My old man was in the Uk Navy. When he was on our old Ark Royal (not the through deck cruiser) he saw a crewman lose a lag when an arrester cable snapped while a Phantom was landing.
My dad had a guy for a customer who worked on a boat of some kind. It was clear just from looking at him that he'd been through some pretty terrible ordeal, and when asked he explained that a cable had snapped and hit him. He'd needed full facial reconstructive surgery and was pretty lucky to be alive.
When I took my crane operator license, my instructor actually had a mangled arm, from an incident with a cable from some harbor crane had whipped him. Most of his arm didn´t have any muscles left on it, but I don´t think the bone broke. No matter tho, cables breaking are bad news - keep a respectful distance!

The operator had EVERYBODY clear a 150 meter radius from the truck leaving him alone at the controls in case the cable hauling the vehicle back up should snap for any reason. He wanted NOBODY near enough to be injured.

Sounds like he got degloved 😬 when the cable snapped and hit him, it probably wrapped around his arm or had frayed ends of something like that which grabbed his skin, so when the cable tried to keep going after it hit him, it would've taken the skin, fat, and muscle along with it. That type of injury has been the thing of nightmare for me ever since I was a kid, and the guy my mum was with at the time worked for a fencing company. One day, the dude they had running the post-hole digger had a ponytail down to like the bottom of his shoulders, wasn't paying attention, and got his hair caught by the augur. That machine straight-up scalped that man.

I always cringe when I see on t.v. usually women getting into any trade and ÑOT putting their hair up I a bun or something to get it out of the way. I myself as a young man had long hair in my 20s and did many post hole work as my older brother and dad had a small construction company, thing with me I was and still am a very cautious about wht I am doing...I'm so attentive it hurts my sex life...lol I can't even accidently bump into a woman. Anyway now I still have long hair and would and do put it in a semi man's bun when working with moving machines. It's my beard that worries me when I'm using my drill.😦 I'm 56 and have worked with power tools all my life , I paid attention in woodshop when it came to working with the table saw, our teacher was a great man, he even left purposely the shops office windows steel frame that had been bent bad when a 2x4 was thrown back towards the user ,then a student using the saw,misused the saw and it sent the wood flying back I to the glass ,smashing it and denting the frame. Never stand behind the wood you are putting through the saw. It could kill. And to this day I have had NO serious work injuries that I could control anyways. I have all my eyes and fingers etc!☺

@@andrewsiasparks It would never work, much less work so reliably it would record anything recognizable. You could surely make a record out of clay and get that working, but by accident? No chance. Sound just does not vibrate through the air that way, you need a proper recorder for it to create a readable signal. A stylus is not that.

I was wondering why Killer Cable Snapping sounded familiar and then I remembered the Book Canadian Disasters, during the construction of a Bridge in I think Quebec because the measurements were not correct the thing snapped and fell into the river with workers on it, the Cables Snapped and ended up removing some legs
One of my uncle got killed by a snap chain, something like 45-50 years ago. He was trying to remove a stump from his land with a tractor and a chain. Chain snapped, he received it in the throat, he was killed instantly, head nearly removed from his body.
I think in the industry with enormous weights there's also the difference in that the cable doesn't lose it's strength to just cause a snap. Whatever the cable is attached to can still be at the end pulling causing actual whipping motion with the force still being put into it, while the snap just sends the motion towards unfortunate bystanders, so it'd really be closer to Adam driving the forklift until results happen. Just in an instant.

Indeed, for example when they used the drum, it would vibrate the stylus vertically, not horizontally. So the sound wasn't recorded in the depth of the grove, but as a vertical wave, whereas the phonograph is depth-based. To play back the drum recording, they could have tried using the same drum and stylus again, just amplify it, maybe that would have worked. Also, it would have helped if they used the same rotation speed for recording and playback, which it looks like they didn't.
@@TennouseijinOr, just rotate the pickup 90 degrees. But! Stereo pickups are actually sensitive in 2 planes, so perhaps there is no need for rotation, just use the right channel. Also, probably there is a problem with speed and timing. The rotator can not reach the set speed instantly, and if you record in the accelleration phase, the playback will be unintelligible. Sure, you could restore it with digital reampling, but that's just way more work than start screaming when the RPM is stable. The RPM might be too low. Maybe you can't deform the clay that finely that would be required to record that frequency at that slow RPM. There is a reason that all the ancient phonographs used much higher speed. Another problem that the end of the needle used for recording was just a piece of roughly cut straw. The end of it was jagged and perhaps too wide which then should have displaced too much clay, effectively dampening the vibration below the noise floor. Making a pointy tip which is just scaping the surface might work. Also, there is a chance that the drying process has chaned the shape of the clay, smoothing out the peaks and valleys on it. I am pretty sure that this can be done when the conditions are just right. And this is probably why we don't have a boatload of ceramic vases with the workers background chatter on in.
@@gabiold Personally, if I were to attempt this 'myth' I would start by trying to make a DIY phonograph that we know SHOULD work, using a wax cylinder and such. Then we could replace parts one by one, replace wax with clay, replace the needle with a straw, replace a perfect cylinder with an imperfect pot, replace controlled RPM with an ancient pottery wheel. Then if one of those changes would cause the phonograph to no longer work (or, say, it would only record low frequencies but lose high ones), we would know which element exactly caused the problem, and we could try to work out if it can be addressed somehow.

My grandfather was a Yugoslav navy officer (first submariner, then minesweeper) and he told me of many accidents, one being exactly this - a cable snapping. It was a thick cable that snapped and took the leg off one of his comrades at the thigh, clean off.
At 16:55 the second green shirt behind the Aircraft gets a double whammy straight to the face, idk how he's fairing but definitely looks critical. He full on landed on his face and then got hit fast enough to launch him like a mannequin.
I work on merchant ships, and we had some horrible incidents. In reports, the cables used in mooring are way bigger than these. Unfortunately, a few people died due to trauma and severed legs.
I heard the cable myth in the 70's from a Gentleman who served in the Merchant Navy during the war. But the cable didn't just snap, it was dragged by the weight of falling cargo, or the ship rolling away from dock. If the cable lashed round the victim, then continued to be pulled perhaps we'd get results closer to the very last test?
The are 3 problems here. Primarily, a snapped cable becomes a whip: 1. The pig is too close. The rope is wrapping around the pig, making it impossible for it to reach adequate velocity. For the rope or cable to cleave the pig should be at the end of the whipping action, where the rope accelerates well beyond the speed of sound. With the steel cable their aren't even creating a sonic boom. 2. The reason why higher gauge cables are more dangerous is because it needs a lot more energy for it to snap, but they are cutting the cable. 3. They are using the same amount of weight to apply tension. Thus, the heavier the cable, the lower velocity it'll actually reach. They are just inflicting more blunt force to the carcass. They are just going for more mass, not velocity. This myth was tested poorly. You can cleave a pig with just a regular leather whip; no heavy machinery needed.

Why? It all depends on the load on the cable, and those cables aren´t even close to the beefiest ones I´ve seen. Also, I think the danger is very much increased if there´s still stuff attached to the end of the cable that breaks off. Like if a big shackle is still attached when something breaks beyond it.
My granddad worked in a lime mine and did see decapitation when a machine dragging about 100 tons of rock got stuck and the cable broke at about 700 tons.
I'm wondering if the squeak was the resonant frequency of that particular piece of straw from the range produced by a human voice. What if you tuned different pieces of straw to different frequencies then allowed them to simultaneously record side by side? You could then play each one then combine them to get a selection of frequencies that might then make up recognisable audio.
i think they forgot to incorporate the weight of the cable into the myth... i know this is ages old but it already bothered me when it first aired. All the formulas one would use to calculate the force asserted onto the pig when hit by the cable would take in the weight of the cable as a factor (impact force, linear motion, maybe even conservation of energy) although actually calculating that would be quite complex... i think their rope was just too short and thin and the force applied to tension the rope was way to small.
Honestly, the tension was just too low. This anecdotes come from times where the tension in the cable was such that it, or some other part of the system, broke. The fact that they needed to cut it indicates that it was not, in fact, at breaking tension.
My uncle got lucky once like over a decade ago, he worked in a cable producing factory and one of the thick metal cables somehow snaped and got him good from the side, he was in recovery for several months
the slicing steel cables is normally several tonnes of tension that gets to release full potential by cutting off the other fixed end, rather than releasing weight off the cable
Another point on the cable myth is that the pig was hanging on a hook, so a lot of energy was lost by knocking the pig around in the air. A person would be standing when they get hit - and possibly be wearing thick rubber soled boots and maybe carrying a lot of equipment - hence a lot of weight. The friction with the ground plus the weight would make the person more susceptible to being cut in half than the pig that was hanging in the air. Not saying it would surely happen. But it makes it more likely to.
i wish they revisited this, clearly got blunt force trauma but no attempts where the threyed ends of the cable make contacl, pretty sure youd get the expected results then
The problem with the cable snap test is the pull ends once the cable is cut if you have 50 tons on a 40 ton cable and it fails you still have 50 tons on one end of that cable. I am betting you can slice a person in two with a cable with 50tons on one end if its wrapped round you
The problem with the pottery record, is that, the method of inscribing the recording, and retrieving the audio is not the same, the vibration mechanism being imparted, and being retrieved is completely dissimilar.
Sound recording that way was an Aprils Day prank on German TV way back in the 70s. Someone found Mozart playing on a vase. But imagine: if Leonardo da Vinci would have invested more into accoustics than visual he might have invented the phonograph.
regarding the cable. i think they made the best with what they had in hands, however this is a very tiny sample vs whats happening in heavy industrys. a very long and heavy cable can actually strech pretty far and if the distance to the target allows for reaching its top velocity with a huge mass its power will be extremly larger then this. lets say a 200 meter long 40-50mm cable (thats alot of mass) with maby 500 metric ton tension, and at a further distance from the center. im not 100% familiar with the function of the cable, but to study how it works maby look abit more on a whip. its all about the mass transformed into force, a whip however utilises moving a heavy body, and transfering it into a smaller diameter to force it to accelate to very high speed.
The problem is that a cable may have plenty of tension, but you need lots of mass as well. If they had tried a thin cable attached to a falling mass (think suspension bridge cable pulled down by falling roadway) it might have worked.
This was borderline infuriating to watch, Adam said at one point he wants to focus the pig at the tip of the whip, then continued to still have the whip wrap around on the pig on every attempt. the tip of the whip crack is 1 million times more intense than if it were to wrap around you and I still don’t doubt that you can be snapped in half if the right weight is provided but the 30,000 pound reference should be considered nothing in the industrial world
A tow rope snapping here a few years ago went through the windscreen of the log truck under tow and killed it's driver. The dashcam caught the whole thing.
I have personally seen cables slice throug tougher things than humans when working with huge floating barges, it's definitely possible with enough weight and force

if your by a dock and ship that's 50,000 tons with a massive ship rope gets pushed by a big swell away from the dock that thing is not only cutting you in half but smacking you into red dust into a concrete wall 300 meters away and then blow you to bits
Would be interesting to find out what the injury level for the person who was hit by the cable on the aircraft carrier was and how long it takes to recover from the injury because they can be at sea for 3 months and the medical bay is limited so did they have to fly him to hospital on shore to get treated
The 30,000lbs may be the “safe” rating, but the actual breaking point will me so much higher for a better safety margin. I saw a video of a barge moving away from another, with a line connecting them. Once the line went taught, it snapped from tension, not from an outside cut. The momentum of a barge will be many times higher than the 30,000lbs

It's a shame that they completely missed the point of using a laser instead of a physical stylus: to filter out the grittiness of the clay to get to the actual sound.
They should have asked a logger how to do it, if they use a pully and stand inside the pully in what's called the bite if the pully or attachment fail it's like a bow. Also longer cables hold even more energy
There was a case in Germany where scouts had a tug of war competition where the tow snapped and killed a few kids with opened skulls. It is maybe not cut in half but at least the head was. Nasty disaster. RIP
It killed one that got thrown around by the tow. He didn't get decapitated. The other boy that died fell on his head, became unconscious and got buried under other kids and died of the consequences of suffocation. No split heads.
For the pig, I would have used 2 cables pulling in opposite direction in a U shape around the pig The pig being the obstacle, they'd have to cut through in order to get back to normal.

Indeed, for example when they used the drum, it would vibrate the stylus vertically, not horizontally. So the sound wasn't recorded in the depth of the grove, but as a vertical wave, whereas the phonograph is depth-based.
To play back the drum recording, they could have tried using the same drum and stylus again, just amplify it, maybe that would have worked. Also, it would have helped if they used the same rotation speed for recording and playback, which it looks like they didn't.

@@TennouseijinOr, just rotate the pickup 90 degrees. But! Stereo pickups are actually sensitive in 2 planes, so perhaps there is no need for rotation, just use the right channel.
Also, probably there is a problem with speed and timing. The rotator can not reach the set speed instantly, and if you record in the accelleration phase, the playback will be unintelligible. Sure, you could restore it with digital reampling, but that's just way more work than start screaming when the RPM is stable.
The RPM might be too low. Maybe you can't deform the clay that finely that would be required to record that frequency at that slow RPM. There is a reason that all the ancient phonographs used much higher speed.
Another problem that the end of the needle used for recording was just a piece of roughly cut straw. The end of it was jagged and perhaps too wide which then should have displaced too much clay, effectively dampening the vibration below the noise floor. Making a pointy tip which is just scaping the surface might work.
Also, there is a chance that the drying process has chaned the shape of the clay, smoothing out the peaks and valleys on it.
I am pretty sure that this can be done when the conditions are just right. And this is probably why we don't have a boatload of ceramic vases with the workers background chatter on in.
@@gabiold Personally, if I were to attempt this 'myth' I would start by trying to make a DIY phonograph that we know SHOULD work, using a wax cylinder and such. Then we could replace parts one by one, replace wax with clay, replace the needle with a straw, replace a perfect cylinder with an imperfect pot, replace controlled RPM with an ancient pottery wheel. Then if one of those changes would cause the phonograph to no longer work (or, say, it would only record low frequencies but lose high ones), we would know which element exactly caused the problem, and we could try to work out if it can be addressed somehow.

My grandfather was a Yugoslav navy officer (first submariner, then minesweeper) and he told me of many accidents, one being exactly this - a cable snapping. It was a thick cable that snapped and took the leg off one of his comrades at the thigh, clean off.

I work on merchant ships, and we had some horrible incidents. In reports, the cables used in mooring are way bigger than these. Unfortunately, a few people died due to trauma and severed legs.

I heard the cable myth in the 70's from a Gentleman who served in the Merchant Navy during the war. But the cable didn't just snap, it was dragged by the weight of falling cargo, or the ship rolling away from dock. If the cable lashed round the victim, then continued to be pulled perhaps we'd get results closer to the very last test?
The are 3 problems here. Primarily, a snapped cable becomes a whip:
1. The pig is too close. The rope is wrapping around the pig, making it impossible for it to reach adequate velocity. For the rope or cable to cleave the pig should be at the end of the whipping action, where the rope accelerates well beyond the speed of sound. With the steel cable their aren't even creating a sonic boom.
2. The reason why higher gauge cables are more dangerous is because it needs a lot more energy for it to snap, but they are cutting the cable.
3. They are using the same amount of weight to apply tension. Thus, the heavier the cable, the lower velocity it'll actually reach. They are just inflicting more blunt force to the carcass.
They are just going for more mass, not velocity. This myth was tested poorly. You can cleave a pig with just a regular leather whip; no heavy machinery needed.

Why? It all depends on the load on the cable, and those cables aren´t even close to the beefiest ones I´ve seen. Also, I think the danger is very much increased if there´s still stuff attached to the end of the cable that breaks off. Like if a big shackle is still attached when something breaks beyond it.

My granddad worked in a lime mine and did see decapitation when a machine dragging about 100 tons of rock got stuck and the cable broke at about 700 tons.

I'm wondering if the squeak was the resonant frequency of that particular piece of straw from the range produced by a human voice. What if you tuned different pieces of straw to different frequencies then allowed them to simultaneously record side by side? You could then play each one then combine them to get a selection of frequencies that might then make up recognisable audio.
i think they forgot to incorporate the weight of the cable into the myth... i know this is ages old but it already bothered me when it first aired. All the formulas one would use to calculate the force asserted onto the pig when hit by the cable would take in the weight of the cable as a factor (impact force, linear motion, maybe even conservation of energy) although actually calculating that would be quite complex... i think their rope was just too short and thin and the force applied to tension the rope was way to small.
Honestly, the tension was just too low. This anecdotes come from times where the tension in the cable was such that it, or some other part of the system, broke. The fact that they needed to cut it indicates that it was not, in fact, at breaking tension.

My uncle got lucky once like over a decade ago, he worked in a cable producing factory and one of the thick metal cables somehow snaped and got him good from the side, he was in recovery for several months
the slicing steel cables is normally several tonnes of tension that gets to release full potential by cutting off the other fixed end, rather than releasing weight off the cable

Another point on the cable myth is that the pig was hanging on a hook, so a lot of energy was lost by knocking the pig around in the air. A person would be standing when they get hit - and possibly be wearing thick rubber soled boots and maybe carrying a lot of equipment - hence a lot of weight. The friction with the ground plus the weight would make the person more susceptible to being cut in half than the pig that was hanging in the air.
Not saying it would surely happen. But it makes it more likely to.

The problem with the cable snap test is the pull ends once the cable is cut if you have 50 tons on a 40 ton cable and it fails you still have 50 tons on one end of that cable. I am betting you can slice a person in two with a cable with 50tons on one end if its wrapped round you

The problem with the pottery record, is that, the method of inscribing the recording, and retrieving the audio is not the same, the vibration mechanism being imparted, and being retrieved is completely dissimilar.

Sound recording that way was an Aprils Day prank on German TV way back in the 70s. Someone found Mozart playing on a vase. But imagine: if Leonardo da Vinci would have invested more into accoustics than visual he might have invented the phonograph.
regarding the cable. i think they made the best with what they had in hands, however this is a very tiny sample vs whats happening in heavy industrys. a very long and heavy cable can actually strech pretty far and if the distance to the target allows for reaching its top velocity with a huge mass its power will be extremly larger then this. lets say a 200 meter long 40-50mm cable (thats alot of mass) with maby 500 metric ton tension, and at a further distance from the center. im not 100% familiar with the function of the cable, but to study how it works maby look abit more on a whip. its all about the mass transformed into force, a whip however utilises moving a heavy body, and transfering it into a smaller diameter to force it to accelate to very high speed.

The problem is that a cable may have plenty of tension, but you need lots of mass as well. If they had tried a thin cable attached to a falling mass (think suspension bridge cable pulled down by falling roadway) it might have worked.
This was borderline infuriating to watch, Adam said at one point he wants to focus the pig at the tip of the whip, then continued to still have the whip wrap around on the pig on every attempt. the tip of the whip crack is 1 million times more intense than if it were to wrap around you and I still don’t doubt that you can be snapped in half if the right weight is provided but the 30,000 pound reference should be considered nothing in the industrial world
A tow rope snapping here a few years ago went through the windscreen of the log truck under tow and killed it's driver. The dashcam caught the whole thing.

It would entirely depend on the diameter of the cable over the tension over the length/distance of the cable.
The 30,000lbs may be the “safe” rating, but the actual breaking point will me so much higher for a better safety margin.
I saw a video of a barge moving away from another, with a line connecting them. Once the line went taught, it snapped from tension, not from an outside cut. The momentum of a barge will be many times higher than the 30,000lbs

They should have asked a logger how to do it, if they use a pully and stand inside the pully in what's called the bite if the pully or attachment fail it's like a bow. Also longer cables hold even more energy
There was a case in Germany where scouts had a tug of war competition where the tow snapped and killed a few kids with opened skulls. It is maybe not cut in half but at least the head was. Nasty disaster. RIP
It killed one that got thrown around by the tow. He didn't get decapitated. The other boy that died fell on his head, became unconscious and got buried under other kids and died of the consequences of suffocation. No split heads.
