This react is to progressive metal band AYREON performing their song Valley of the Queens ft. Floor Jansen. This song came 2nd in my 30k subscriber post and I'm glad it made the list. It's uncanny how similar one of these vocalists sounds like Broadway vet Kristin Chenoweth and overall it's a lovely song that works well for three singers.

Julia Nilon You should check out her solo stuff, her work with Devin Townsend and with Danny Cavanagh, as well as older stuff with The Gathering. You also might want to reserve a reaction slot for Annie's duet with Sharon den Adel - look up "somewhere - black symphony". If you liked this, you will love that, plus you get to discover Sharon (you meet Simone next video).

Ayreon is not so much a band, it's a project from producer and multi-instrumentalist Arjen Lucassen.
He invites loads of people to participate on his concept albums. All of them have a central theme and a story where all vocalists fill a role like in a play.
Anneke Van Giersbergen started in an amazing band called The Gathering.

Ayreon "The Day That the World Breaks Down" Arjen's unique "compilation" with 11 lead singers
The main reason so many great vocalists want to work with Arjen Lucassen (the guy behind Ayreon) is that he's apparently so much fun to work with. Also Ayreon live concerts are rare, since Arjen has severe social anxiety and stage fright. So that hopefully explains why there is no competition between the singers here (or anywhere during the Ayreon Universe Live concert, which features over a dozen very talented vocalists from the rock/metal genre). They're all in it for the fun of performing.
Hey Julia, Anneke (the blonde) was Floor's inspiration as she was in a metal group called the Gathering when Floor was in her teens. Your wine haired girl is Marcela Bovio she is Mexican and is also a metal singer and funnily is the lead singer for the band MaYaN that Mark Jansen who used to be in the same band as Floor Jansen (After Forever) - but are not related but now is also one of the founding members of Epica who you are reacting to as well soon?? There are a lot of inter-relations between all these performers in the Euro metal scene.
On Ayreon it is a progressive metal project more so than a band as it consists of Arjen Lucassen and whatever other singers and musicians he can pull together at a given time. This song is on the folk side of the project obviously more so than the metal side but that is the nature of progressive music it can go anywhere!
Haha! I just had to add to this that technically this is a Star One song which is another of Arjen Lucassens projects and one that Floor was involved in as a singer way way back in the day with her sister doing backup vocals. This concert was the first Ayreon concert as he tried to assemble a whos who of European metal singers and it had proven a big challenge and one he didn't think he could pull off but luckily for us he did!
Valley of the Queens is from Into the Electric Castle, not Star One.....It is the death scene of the Egyptian, sang by Anneke van Giersbergen.
@@anniekster yeah thanks for pointing that out :) I initially thought that but had just watched the old star one concert and it was there but Arjen doesn't necessarily stick to his Ayreon and Star One songs in the live shows so I outhunk myself!! Like Eye of Ra which is Star One but has ended each of the Ayreon concerts!
Just a funny thought, MaYaN has a guitarist that came from Delain (Merel Bechtold), Delain toured (pre shut down) with Amorphis and Anneke. This entire world/genre is entire small.

Anneke van Giersbergen is the first (blonde) singer, she is a rabbit hole unto herself. Known these days as the female guest vocalist of the Devin Townsend Project, she orignally was in a band called The Gathering. She's just amazing.

I think you'd be surprised at how much 'metalheads' appreciate good music. There are so many genres of metal itself. Many bands use punk, pop, operatic, classical, symphonic or what-have-you ellements into their music. Metal has so many variations in it, it dumbfounds me how it's all dumped together as just 'noise' by what is considdered 'mainstream'.
Good music can be found in every genre, so can bad. Personal taste plays a big role I think :)
I come from a very classical background and music taste, but I recently broadened my horizons (mostly with the help of this channel, thanks Julia). I now readily agree that great music and musicianship can be found in any genre. Julia's comment on how they are not fighting for attention, but rather serve the song just highlighted this again.

The OG for this song is Anneke Van Giersbergen (the Blonde), Floor's idol. Floor did her own rendition of this song with her sister, Irene with Star One back in early 2000s. The Wine is Marcela Bovio- one of Ayreon angels, also did a solo cover of this song on her own YT channel. She's also a vocal coach 😉

@@treintje1001 vocal coaches work on repertoire and performance, voice/singing teachers teach vocal technique and how to sing. A lot of coaches/teachers lean more one way than the other. I personally list myself as a contemporary singing specialist because I wear both vocal coach and voice teacher hats. If someone specifically only works in one area it can be good to know what those definitions can mean so that you're getting what you want from your teacher or coach.
Three vocalist is sort of like the understatement of the year, what you have is the royal family of top level professional power goddesses. There is enough power and talent there to destroy that venue if there was any kind of ego/catfight/dominance issue at all. ....I think it speaks volumes to mutual respect and admiration (and proffesionalism) that it was such a lovely supportive soothing performance
Where to begin... Beautiful singing by All 3 women. Floor's solo parts are my favorites, however..They're all vocal Queens. Beautiful song.
Ayreon is a real treasure chest for both musicians and vocalists as Arjen is a master on placing voices and timbres over his music. Just dig in.

Anneke van Giersbergen is indeed a vocal beast. She was the lead singer of a band called The Gathering for many years, did so much work with Devin Townsend that she is considered an honorary member of his band, has done a lot of work with Ayeron, has guested with Globus multiple times, and also has a successful solo career. If you want to hear more of her, you should check out Travel by The Gathering, Grace by Devin Townsend Project, or Mighty Rivers Run by Globus.

Progressive rock and prog-metal concept albums were legit my gateway into broadway musicals. I started checking out cast recordings of popular musicals like Les Mis and Wicked (the Anneke/Chenoweth comparison is spot on!), then got into Sondheim, and just like that I was into a whole new style of music.

Marcela Bovio most frequently sings backup in these projects involving a variety of singers, so it's only fitting she can adjust the way she blends to suit other singers' timbres. Stream of Passion (yet another project started by Arjen Lucassen) is a group where you can hear her take the lead. She's definitely great in her own right. "Delirio" is one of my favorites. She plays violin, too. ^__^

Check out Anneke's former band The Gathering. Back in 1995 their album 'Mandylion' paved the way for (almost) all the melodic metal bands with female singers we know now. :-) The Gathering and Anneke did an amazing anniversary concert back in 2014 with epic versions of the songs: 'On Most Surfaces' and 'Travel'. (Both songs are on You Tube; Concert at Doornroosje.)

For years I thought of Anneke as Dolly Parton on uber steroids, perhaps cause she does a very nice Jolene, but literally a week ago I heard Kristin after a long while and it was such an obvious comparison! Actually would be great crossovers - Anneke on Broadway and Kristin at Wacken... I hope you check out the less "delicate" part of Anneke's range, as she sang in a few great metal bands/projects over the past 25 years - The Gathering, Devin Townsend Project, Gentle Storm, and Vuur - and has amazing power, endurance, and expressiveness to go with that lovely tone. The wine-haired singer is Marcela Bovio, and while less acclaimed than Floor or Anneke, she is a great vocalist in her own right. She was in Gentle Storm with Anneke and there is a fan video on YT of them performing Numbered live and it's a showcase!

the wine girl is Marcela Bovio she was born in my hometown Monterrey Mex, and i used to see her in her oldest Bands Hydra and Elfonia here in Monterrey mex, before the Ayreon mastermind Arjen discovered her and take her to netherlands, we're so proud of her.
I'm a bit synthesizer person, and in sound sculpting there are multi-timbral patches, where you usually mix a strong and clear base sound with a resonant and characteristic one to make a deeper and interesting texture. I think we could also thank Arjen here for wisely choosing vocalists and making an arrangement of this piece. He's a sound sculptor of the great level!

I haven't dived deep into ayreon, but it's pretty much recital hour with a symphonic metal band accompaniment, featuring premium vocalists.

Ayreon is an ongoing one-man project, and for each of his musical tales he gathers musicians from all over the world to form a one time band with. Mostly just for recording sessions. It's pretty damn interesting!

I totally agree about the love and respect that all these singers have for each other. No one is ever trying to out perform another. Rather they enhance and support each other. It is a beautiful thing! I wish more performers when working together would behave with the same grace... Oh and talking "grace" you should check out Devin Townsend "Grace" live Retinal Circus show where the wonderful Anneke sings with Hevy Devy. It is also a fun video to watch as it was the last song (other than the crazy encore song) and has all sorts of things happening onstage at the same time. Visual and aural treat.

Anneke has an interesting voice and does some really nice solo work in addition to working with a band. Marcella does really nice backups for Ayreon as well as some solo work in his productions. His rock operas are worth looking at. "The day the world breaks down" gives you a whole bunch of soloists to get a taste of.

Blonde is the reason Floor Jansen became singer in a metal band. Floor thought she could never combine her high voice with her favorite music, metal. So she didn't quite know what to do with her voice until she heard Blonde's band The Gathering. Blonde (Anneke van Giersbergen) is a pioneer in Dutch female fronted metal. The thing I want to say about this song is that I wouldn't have minded this song to be twice as long. So beautiful.

Another awesome reaction. Is very common metal singers are invited in many other bands, specially since many metal musicians have many side projects other than the main band they play. There are many joke lists that feature a musician or a character and the main characteristics they have according to which metal sub genre they belong. Even if those are jokes, they are really accurate, you should check that and have some laughs
