I began collecting Social Security at 70 years old. Now about 1 and a half years later I received an extra $985 in my checking account. Also I received a letter that said that my Social Security was recalculated and in addition to that $9>5, I'm getting an extra $130 a month. I was very surprised. I was too scared to call but after listenung to your podcast, I think I'm receiving the increase based on my continuing to work (as a self employed attorney and earning substantial income and paying into Social Security. I'll probably go to the Social Security Office just to make sure. Thanks for the info. I'll probably work another couple if years until I have to withdraw RMD'S. Thanks for the info.

If you get a cola raise and live in a DHS housing, they take over 1/2 of it. So We have a rent raise every year. And you can lose some of your food stamps too. At 71 going back to work is unlikely. So those pityly raises really some time hurts more than helps. I don't think our representatives understand that.

    Hi Dr. Ed!
I have been following you since I found you a few weeks ago. Thank you for all that you do! My question is:
    I am 59 and a divorced spouse(married 10 yrs). My ex husband is 62-
If my benefit is less than 50% of his PBI when I am 62, and will still be 50% of his PBI at 67(my full retirement age),
does it benefit me to apply for benefits on my record at 62 / as well as apply for Independently Entitled Divorced Spouse at that time? Does the Split Strategy pertain to ex spouses?
Or is this not the case for ex spouses? - I would also likely work part-time, staying below the annual earnings limit.
Thank you so much for taking this question.
I am in the state of Wisconsin if this matters.

52:23 -- John S should contact the IRS, just in case somebody else is using his SSN illegally. Not only is he at risk for ID theft if that is the case, the person using his SSN could also fraudulently apply for his refund before he has a chance each year, or make him seem like he owes more than he does.
I've had my ID stolen in the past, and it's a nightmare to fix. But the sooner you fix it, the better.
The IRS can issue you a PIN to use when you file your taxes as an extra layer of assurance that you are who you say you are. File your taxes as soon as you can each year also.

I'm a random commenter. The way I stopped those "spam" phone calls is to 1. Not answer them every time. 2. Block them every time after the ringing stops. Call your phone carrier, ask about phone "shield" or "guard" or any other name your carrier may have that helps block solicit, spoofing & other malicious callers. 3. Add your phone number to the "do not call" list. 4 Your phone has features that can limit calls to your phone by selecting to receive calls from your contacts list only. You may want to make sure all business & and doctors, friends & family are updated on your phone before you do this one. Update your contact list regularly so you won't miss the calls you want. Hope that helps.

You can collect but any earnings over $22,320 anything over that they take out $1 for every $2 you make . The year you reach FRA, currently it’s just over $59,000 where they would take out$1 for every $3. You get that money back when you reach FRA but prorated over 10-12 years. Your 401 K has no bearing Keep maxing it out.

The benefit amount on my SS statement and SS.gov account.... are they accurate? I was born in 1960 and my FRA is 67. I retired from work 10 years ago at age 53 1/2 and have slightly less than 35 working years. I am currently 64 y/o. So on my SS statement, it shows 0's from 2014 until now (2024). I plan on drawing my SS benefit in about 1 1/2 to 2 years from now at age 65 1/2 to 66 depending on the remaining balance of my Roth IRA. I just want to know if the $$$ shown at age 65 to 66 is what I will actually receive (understanding that Medicare will deduct from that amount). I`ll be enrolling in Medicare in one year from now at age 65 and will have to pay out of pocket for a little while until SS kicks in. I just want to know if my SS statement $$$ amount is what it will be knowing that I left work 10 years ago.

You will get any COLA increases. If it show you will receive $2,000 at your FRA age 67 then any COLA increases will be added to the $2,000

Cost of Living Adjustment. It's money added to SS (some yr's.) to help adjust for inflation.

I am 67 , I started receiving my surviving spouse benefits of 1200.00 at 65. I am not currently working. I remarried and was divorced after 14 years. I was told by SSA that if I took my benefits (1400.00) I couldn’t receive any divorce spouse benefits, it was one or the other.. You are stating the opposite. So I need to open my claim and in a year when he turns 62 I then can file on his. At my highest earnings was 20,000.00, his 80,000.00.
