Funny timing, we just finished our first game last week. My favorite experiment was stilts for horses.

My favorite mechanism is increasing knowledge and the benefits/cost of doing so. I agree with Jamey that the book as the map is so well done, especially with clear iconography that is easy to read across the table. Unfortunately, the game length keeps us from playing more, similar to Mansions of Madness or Eldritch Horror which are two of my favorites but tough to table.

Looking forward to playing this! I've only played solo once. I think I will break it out in October. The base game components are also amazing!
Oh yeah, the track that gauges sanity and how much the townsfolk begin to hate the scientist (due to him looting graves and doing occult practices) is really cool also! Eventually I think the townsfolk won't let you go to any of the locations in town until you go to church to make amends (something along those lines).
Thanks Jamey! Have a great day!

That's really cool how the town reacts to what the scientists are doing!

I had looked at getting this game but wasn't sure based on what I read.
Ravensburger has a similar 'book setup' based line of games. Lord of the rings and The Princess Bride are two of them. They aren't heavy games but the similarity of all the setup being right there is present.
