How To Screen Print: 2 Color Press Set Up & Test Shirt
Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenpr...
This is a tutorial screen printing will walk you through a techniques that uses the film positives on press in order to set up a multi-color job. In this case Jonathan at Catspit Productions forgot to put in his special little registration marks so the ones on the film did not washout. Therefore we used a technique where we use the film positives to line up both screens in this simple 2 color design. By actually setting up the film positives on press centered on the pallet we can then line up the clean un-inked screens. You will notice in his video I did not even have to use micro registration at all. But that is partly due to the simplicity of the design. Watch Jonathan as he tapes off the screens and sets up the film positives on the pallet. The see how he lines up the 2 screens, inks them up and has a perfectly registered design. Learn how to screen print for fun or for profit!

I know you were asking Jonathan; but "MY" preference is taping on the inside.
If you don't tape the inside; ink will be getting in between the mesh and the frame and it may cause looseness in the long run. You will have to spend more time spraying the inside of the frame and possibly using more ink-removal product.
Hope this helps. I would still like to get Jonathan's take on this.
That's a good question. If I have a big order, I usually put tape on both sides because the ink might seep through. But Im interested in CATSPITS reason too.
I love your videos. Very helpful. I am learning alot. My goal is to screen print DIY solar cells. Any suggestions?
So helpful man! Just scored an old Harco 4 color 2 station machine. I have a lot to learn, been taking notes on your videos.

Gracias a mi amigo. Estoy muy contento de que te gustaba el video mucho. Le agradezco su apoyo en gran medida. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
@ Chris Reid, It's hard to say what is causing that from here but try using a lower mesh count for the under base but not too low. Maybe a 135 and follow up with either the same for the colors or use a 110. Use a gentle flood and stroke while fine tuning it to get the desired print result. You don't need as much pressure when printing on top of semi cured ink. Thank you! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
You’re welcome. Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate your support. And I’m happy to hear you are learning from my videos. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠

Thanks for the videos, great advice. I'm starting up my own home-based printing business because i used to do this on a smaller scale when i was younger (20 yrs ago) and i really loved it. I am about to be retrenched and although I could get a job doing what i was, managing a company, I just don't ever want to work for a boss again. I have an idea on who my main target market is going to be (company shirts etc) but would appreciate any advice getting back into this business. Gary- Durban S.Africa..
You’re very welcome. I appreciate your support. I'm sorry but I really do not have a general piece of advice to give you that would make any difference. If you have specific questions about screen printing I might answer, please ask. Also the American market is much different than yours. Thanks for watching. Sir what is the size of platen and the frame of silk screen?

Hi Catspit!! I appreciate everything your doing. :)
I'm wondering if you did have registration marks on the screen, then would you do the process differently???
anybody know??
also how do you know where this will go on the shirt? the design is centered but how do you register the height on the shirt
Hi there. Thank you! My pleasure to help out where I can. Yes, I would have.

Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
It's centered on the pallet and straight to it as well. You can adjust print height by moving the pallet in and out. You can also use the shirt placement on the pallet.
Thank you very much! I'm very happy to hear that you are learning from my videos. Thanks a lot for giving me the thumbs up. That means a lot to me, I appreciate it. Good luck with your screen printing endeavors and let me know if I can ever be of assistance. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
hi nice vids! it helps alot! im just wondering if you can use acetate as an alternative for stencils? i mean by cutting the acetate and use it... no photo emul, no stencils, just acetate...? is it possible? thanks!
great video ....but when u do the set up how do u set it for off contact ...?
it looks like ur flat on the palette.
im still New to screen Printing
Yes, I was printing on a very light colored shirt with black and gray so off contact was not too critical as I wanted to print a lower volume of ink. Off contact is more critical when you're trying to get maximum opacity with the least amount of work and ink. But you can, for instance, print black ink all day long without any off contact since it's so powerful and we usually only need a small amount of black ink to actually make a decent print. I have at least 2 videos about off contact. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

..thanks for this great educational video..!..am planning to start this kinda' work..all the blessings!
Good job man, been watching through some coming from a metal printing shop. Seems the carousel set up is a real benefit, would you say it would be too hard to do this with a single press ?
Thank you! It would be nearly impossible since trying to line up a screen with ink on it is difficult at best. The shirt needs to stay on the pallet until the print is finished. So putting in one screen and then another would be very time consuming at best. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
More than welcome, very kind to reply and give such helpful videos ! Haha yes that's true and something I hadn't thought about, line up was pretty simple with metal being rigid and being able to discard line up on the material. Thanks once again =] I'll definitely check out your supplies.
My pleasure to help out where i can. Good luck!
I've been terrified of printing two layers with Silkscreen (I've worked mostly in woodblock printing) So thanks for a good video and the three Hail Marys before you printed the 2nd layer.
You're very welcome. Yeah I forgot to add registration marks. It would have been much easier if I had not forgotten those ;) Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
Excelent video. Funny how the registration mark is placed XD
Great Video Man!
Questions:
1. when you create a screen for a client can you keep the screen forever and re-use it to print that customers shirts? or do you need to clean the emulsion off of the screen and start from scratch every time they need shirts?
any advice when you are using vinyl instead of burned sheets to silk screen...as far as lining it up...since you can't see through the vinyl??? Thanks for any advice you can give...
Maybe use a composite print out of the art in black so you can line up the screens. Unfortunately there is no secret if you can’t see through the emulsion. You’ll need to line it up to the key printer at least. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! www.catspitproductionsllc.com/ - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
@Pre Printz Thank you! I push or pull depending on the stencil drag being caused by the ink and/or squeegee. It just depends on the test print. Whatever way looks best. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
You are right..The older you get the wiser you become..hehehe thumbs up man!

I was wondering, does the spinning parts of the press has any lock in mechanism for easy alignment, or you just have to align them perfectly?
hey man...thanks for the tips...what mesh did u use
Is put the tape on the back side of the screen to block off the space between the emulsion and screen better than putting the tape on the inside of the screen ?
or is more of a personal preference thing /.
Thank you

Great videos! How long did you hit the gray with the heat gun?
Thank you very much! Honestly, I do not recall. This video was done a few years ago. But it was just enough to make it dry to the touch. That's what flash curing is. You only gel or semi cure the ink. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Great stuff, looking forward to more vids.
Hi, thanks for this video! I have a 2 color design, I would like to ask what color should i apply first the royal blue or the black? shirt color is white
thanks hope to hear from you!
You’re very welcome. Glad I could help out. Normally we print the lightest color with the smallest stencil first. But generally it will be the lightest color ink to the darkest for print order. Black is often last since it traps all other colors in many cases. Without seeing the art I would print blue then black unless the black is much smaller than the blue. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Thank you! Yes you can use thin plastic films like paper stencils. Thanks so much for watching and dropping me a note. ☠

Just like @danielsam1959 say, this is a good video cause is a "All in One". Keep doing as you can more videos like this one with more colors. BTW, that's how I register my screens all the time, just how you did it on this one. I'll keep watching and learning from PR, THANKS!
does the color of the tshirt matter when screen print (regarding the ink)?
honestly i like the way you explain every little detail of the process ... 100 thumbs up
Thank you!! You’re very welcome. Glad I can help out through my videos. Yes, we tend to use high opacity inks on darker garments like black. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

You'll need some graphic art software and an inkjet printer. I have many videos on screenprinting that will help you out. Check them out on my channel page. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Newbie question....Interested in how to make a design for more than one color. What software is needed? How do you separate the design so you can do multi color?
That's a little difficult to answer in a comment. I have some videos on art creation and color separating. I use Adobe Illustrator for software with an Epson 1400 inkjet printer for film. You can manually separate colors in AI or use RIP software to automate that. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
Did you screen print that skateboard as well? That wouldn"t be possible, would it? It would have to be a vinyl transferred with a heat press to do that right?

This is a plastisol textile screen printing ink. Thanks for watching & commenting! ☠
LOL, stupid registration marks :) In this case the screen had never been flooded or printed. Therefore I did a quick double stroke to ensure it filled in nicely into the knocked out areas of the second color. But in general if you keep doing that it will blur the edges and lower print resolution. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
Thank you! I'll do my best. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
No, I used to skate and ride BMX years ago. I still ride my bike now and then for exercise but I am too old and frail to skate... LOL. Boards can be printed in different ways but I don’t do it. Thank you! You can clean the screen of ink and save it to use over and over until the stencil wears out or the mesh gets too frayed. But you would be able to print a lot of shirts with a screen. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
You’re welcome; it’s my pleasure to help out in any way. Thanks for watching & commenting! ☠
I think it’s a personal thing for me. I also believe it uses less tape and achieves the same results much faster. And I have never had any problems with mesh adhesion due to some ink getting in the corners. It can be cleaned out pretty nicely when you reclaim the screen. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠
I'd like to ask, I'm having a problem when printing unto shirts/paperbags since after several prints, the ink gets stuck on the screen especially for small details. I always have to wash my screen and wait for it to dry which is quite time consuming especially for mass production. Is my ink too thick? Or do I have to mix my ink with something else for it to seep through continuously? I really can't figure out the problem :( I'm using a black water based ink. Please advise. Thanks!
It sounds like the ink is simply drying in the screen while you are working. The smallest details will often clog first. See if there is an additive called a "retarder" made for your ink. Also be sure to back flood between prints. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
've always wanted to do my own shirts without needing a minimum amount, I do a little bit of everything when it comes to art so I decided to start watching some tutorials on silk scree. I've been buying things little by little since it's for personal use I won't be making money out of my prints. The question I have which I can't really figure out is multiple colors, I am going to be using a one color press which I might buy soon or possibly make which is not the problem the problem I have is figuring out how to lay the colors. I thought and figured it was all about laying the colors on top of each other layered for example and image of Sonic I figured on a Black Tshirt I would lay the white base wherever theres color leaving the black as the background Tshirt unless I was using another color like green I would do a solid image of sonic in white as the base and then lay every other color on top not overlapping.I would mix colors or buy the skin tone for my first layer on top of the white "solid" not dotted, then the red shoes again using only solid colors and matching the color and then going over with the blue using every color where it belongs, toward the end either going back with black or not depending if I didn't cover the black when I designed it like your image and that's it. I don't know if that's correct or not because browsing around I came across CMYK which you akready know what it is... the question Is am I suppose to make my desing in CMYK or can I just lay the colors on top like a coloring book?
+Klaem0re I think you're asking if you can work in spot colors or CMYK. You can do either one. You can use all spot colors OR you could do CMYK with some spot colors. Or you can do just CMYK. It's up to you how you want to render the design. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
+CatspitProductions I don't really know the terms but by spot color I imagine that means the same way stencils work in layers. Honestly this is harder than I thought I've been watching your videos and I recently bumped in to CMYK and threw me off... I hope someday I can be a pro. Thank you so much for your quick response I will be purchasing stuff from your site.
+Klaem0re You’re very welcome. Glad I can help out through my videos. Yes, spot color just means full on color with no gradients. I do have a few videos about artwork and color separations. Check out my playlists.
What is the name of the mod your using to clamp the screens to the arm? my screens keep moving a milimeter each time i try to line them up and i feel that this is my only option to solving this. Iv contemplated going to lowes and rigging something up but this is something id pay money for it quality. Where can i find this for my Magnum press?
Not sure exactly what you're referencing. But this is not a mod. I sell these presses and they are made that way. The print head clamp is built just like that. You can see them on my eCommerce site. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
when you separate your art work do you leave any overlap or do you separate it pixel perfect? eg if using a white underbase do you have that pixel perfect to the next screen or slightly smaller?
You can "choke" the white under base if you want but when printing colors "butt/butt" it's not always necessary since the ink tends to fill out a bit over a longer print run. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Sorry I don’t have anything I can easily give you. I have a ton of clip art but you have to know what you are looking for. Thanks for watching & commenting! ☠
