I just bought this lens, absolutely amazing quality images effortlessly, hand held no problem 👍
Thank you for posting this video. I was already considering buying the a7RV with the 200-600mm sony lens together for fast flying birds. Those two together look like a perfect bird photography combo.
Just bought mine after much deliberation - very pleased👍
Currently my most used lens - I use it for sports (football) and just love it. While you might think it needs loads of light but I find even on a cloudy day its great (in fact I prefer shooting on such days). Focusing is fast and it's sharp sharp sharp. Monopod is an essential though!
Saying focusing is fast is a *big* missunderstanding. This lens have particular problem with hunting at 600 mm. If you zoom to 600 mm and then point somewhere to the trees direction you will get blurry image because lens will not focus at all, then you have to back to 400 mm to focus and lock the target, and zoom in again to 600 mm. It's annyoing.
@@pentagramyt417 that not how my copy works. I have never seen hunting at all. Maybe your lens needs a service.
@@DarrenRowse I think it should be checked, as there is some back/front focusing at f6.3 and when green box is around the bird eye (A7-IV). With human eye detection is excellent.
@@pentagramyt417 I'd say you have a poor copy or some other issue and should check it with the camera / in service. I've had no hunting at all with the lens and haven't seen it widely reported either. There a few issues noted with the A7iV but I thought it was reported those had been resolved.
@@lafonevc5663 thanks buddy, you know the service usually don't check it back and forth, just check it in general: "it works? it works.. send it back." they won't check it for hours.
Hiring this lens for Cosford air show in couple weeks to try, not sure if want to purchase or wait for version 2 as don't need anything past 200mm often
Hope you like it as much as i have!
I love my 200-600. I initially bought the tampon 150-500 because I was put off by the weight on the Sony lens, but within 6mo realised that the extra focal length was really worth it with wildlife, especially birds and birds in flight. I was at Bempton cliffs this bank holiday weekend, and the lens did not let me down. Even with the 1/4tc and losing 1 stop of light, it still performed fabulously fast allowing me to get some great images (and just the higher noise to handle on the cloudier days). I can honestly say it's a great, sharp lens at this focal length and price point.
Wow that 500mm tampon’s gotta be hella uncomfortable
How did you like the tamron? I just bought it this last week. Using it more for kid sport stuff and some wildlife. Liked the Sony, but couldn’t get myself to pay for it. The 1100 on the tamron was already pushing it on my budget.
I liked the Tamron, had it last year for a bit thanks to Tamron sending it out. The 200-600 however is a fantastic lens especially when you look at the price of it even new
@@DannyBligh I’ve just spotted the autocorrect error. Tamron Tamron Tamron 😂. The 200-600 is definitely great and I find it sharper. I hope you enjoy it.
@@jddorland it’s still a good lens, but if you’ve used the 200-600 you wouldn’t switch back. If only for the internal zoom, it means it balances really well in your hand the the half throw on the zoom dial is just lovely. Image quality wise I find the Sony sharper.
200-600 is brilliant paired with the Sony a9 20fps.
I will get the lens soon...but not to much for birds...LOI...I an American retired in Bangkok...so... I will use the lens for street...boats on the river ...concerts... aircraft ....Balcony shots form my apartment...etc...Cheers
Fab video - I had a 200-600 and thought it was great but bit the bullet to get the 600mm prime which is even better.and is still light enough not to need a tripod.
I can only dream of having that lens 😂 maybe one day
It's a bit apples and oranges as a 10k prime is always going to be better at it's far end compared to a 1500 zoom. Use case dependent as well as budget but it's quite a bullet to bite for the difference, though the prime is amazing.
I remember how tempted you where at the Camera Show !
Oh mate, it’s kept me awake for years 😂 let alone at the show
@@DannyBligh Well now you can go to bed and dream about what you will do with it - those Puffin photo are Tickety-Boo I love my RF 100 to 500 but that extra 100 would be nice to have as I need to put the converter on mine to get that extra reach - cracking video and tips as usual !
I just bought the A7Rv to complement my A7SIII. Your videos were helpful. Have the 200-600mm as well!
Enjoy the camera!! Glad they help 🙌🏻
I had the SONY 200-600mm 5.6-6.3 G Lens, I sold it last year, too big, too heavy and not handy ! I got the Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports Lens in March 2024 and it is much better in any way !
It's not too big and heavy for what it is. You just bought the wrong lens. And the Sigma you bought is a tad restricted in what it can do compared to the Sony. So it can't be better in anyway.
@@markrigg6623 I had the 200-600for 4 years and I used less and more less because of the size and weight. For me the Sigma are NOT restricted !!! The Sigma are better !!!
it is said that the sigma is even softer than the tamron 150-600g 2, and like many sigma mirrorless lenses, suffers from horrible light transmission due to the crazy amount of glass elements.
@@kingghidorah8106 The Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Spors are excellent !!! It is better than the Sony 200-600 and that is better than the tamrom 150-600, so WHO says otherwise ??!
@@markrigg6623 As I wrote, I HAD the 200-600 ! I only used it at 500 to 600mm ! So I have the RIGHT Lens, better, smaller and more light weight, I can hike in the nature with the Sigma 500mm for several hours, just carrying it in my hands without any problems.
I love that lens - Happy Shooting!
Thanks!
this is going to sound silly, But I have a Sony a6400, I love wildlife photography, and have my eyes on this lens, would it be a waste of money with the specs of my current camera?
Nothing is a silly question on this channel, how else you going to find out the answers if you don’t ask?
First of - the lens would work fine. Mot sure how fast the AF will be but it would be fine. The lens would become a 300-900!!! That’s because it’s not a fullframe camera. So that may be better for you, it may be worse.
But maybe one day you’ll upgrade to fullframe? 🤷🏻♂️ a lot of people say you can out an average lens on a insanely good camera and get okay results. But put a great lens on an average camera and get better results.
Short answer, if the end results are what you want (and especially if one day you may go full frame) - do it
@@DannyBligh I think I have decided against it, I travel so much and it’s just too heavy, thank you thoigh
@@ThomasGush that’s why i didn’t buy one to begin with. I went with the 100-400 which i loved. But sold because i bought this and weight and travelling aint a problem now for me
Would you say its good for plane spotting and airshows?
100%, planning to take this to Wales for the Mach Loop when i have some spare time
@@DannyBligh Aight, will probably pick it up soon since it is the best at its price range here
Sony a7iii N1
In the video you said Sony 200-600mm lens + Sony A7RV, what megapixel can it shoot in Full Frame?
Nasa telescope! 🔭
I am not so happy with this lens. I'd rather have a 600 mm f6.3 prime as Nikon do have. If sony had 100-400 GM with internal zooming, I'd switch for sure. It's heavy, it has problems with hunting at 600 mm (if you start looking for targes at that focal lengths), the 6.3 aperture is low contrasty, and images are soft. You need to be almost all the time at 300-400 mm lock the target and then zoom in to 600 mm to lock the focus, and keep f/8.0 almost whenever possible to have sharp image. And it's FREAKING heavy to handheld wildlife for 4-6 hours.
That’s not my experience. I’d suggest having the lens looked at.
Had that problem, but it was a second hand that apparently was dropped without the owner telling me. Returned it and bought new. Great sharpness on A7 III, but not on par with my A7R IV. So, using on the III and happy.
I can take it off yer hands
you left out the most important part...how much?
Depends where you are in the world I guess 🤷🏻♂️ but i paid £1150 and got it in mint condition whilst still being used
About $2k new in the US
I got new for £1,300 and what a lens
a photo of a puffin?!
