This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

You know that is going in agadmator best moments
One of those "Agadmatorisms" which is why we subscribe.
I wanted to highlight the exact same quote.
Watching a new video, waiting for that Agadmator typical dimensional bending of language is what it's all about!
Oh and chess is nice too.

Who else is getting a little obsessed with Morphy?
- Plays competitively for two years, destroys everybody, then totally walks away from Chess aged 22!
These enigmatic Yanks!
Just a madlad finding new hobby
@Castor Tarantino Kasparov had a more supportive environment for chess than Morphy ever did. Peoples like Staunton running away from him and other keep breaking up agreement to play him as scheduled just add to his dissapointment which led to his retirement. If Morphy were born in this era what knows could happen.
Morphy is a noob
@@AlbertWesker-hx9ss And also his parents were not supportive of his chess career. They made it clear to him that he can't ever play chess for money. What a waste of talent.
Morphy's games are mesmerising. His vision of the possibilities of simple moves is insane.
True but there are also wasted moves and other mistakes in his game but you can forgive it given the time period. He is like a rough diamond that lacked alot of the theoretical and extensive knowledge we have today but I'm sure given time he would have been able to compete with anyone in history.
Yeah
With today's opening theory and computer engines, he'd be 3000 for sure.
@@Corteum There would also be a lot less stigma about playing chess it was considered a lazy activity. Morphy actually quit chess because he was told he was wasting his life.

‘He played a glorious game: in open field’

- Spen's poem about Morphy .
Sad indeed
This was in that old American Heritage magazine I read many years ago.
That's a beautiful poem.
Antonio’s patronizing was soooo funny and an amazing praise for Morphy “Thats how you know you’re a good player, when u force morphy to win the game by material. You should feel good about yourself”
Was talking about this in the library recently: Pal of mine boasted he made a guy suffer for 20 moves before he resigned, another said he forced his op to win the hard way, through queening a passed pawn..turns out they were playing this same Morphy guy..

Morphy was astounding, simply sublime.
Over time the amount of chess I play fluctuates quite a bit but one thing remains constant: I always come back for the good stuff.
Agadmator is going to run out of hoodies.. covering Morphy’s simultaneous exhibition
This time, my friend, you are not as fast in uploading as usual. This match ended 150 years ago, not 30 seconds. But it's ok.
Yeah it's fine lol
There is an insane chess game he uploaded between a mamoth and a cave man. You can find it on your IStone on YouHunt.

a gentleman we know nothing about: the perfect Mr hoodie guy 🦹♀️
lol
Morphy versus some guy we know nothing about. Everyone in the first few rows, be sure to wear a poncho, you're in the splash zone.
Edwards C Bierwirth was a Chilean gentleman that in his youth went to Paris, as so many Americans did in those times. He was born in 1815, valparaiso
I don’t think Morphy missed the quicker checkmate as it’s too obvious. I think he was dismantling his opponents mind for thwarting an elegant checkmate.
It was at this position I thank Mr Agadmator for his daily dose of chess goodness into my RUclips feed.
Never expected to see a Matrix thumbnail on a chess channel, but here we are.
"this is how u know u r a good chess player and force Morphy to take the pawn and decide the game via material"
~"agad Anderson"
Okay. I have been bingeing agadmator for about a yr and a half now. The titles of the videos is possibly the most underrated part. I absolutely love it
The thumbnail lol
Seeing all of this blindfold is really matrix skills for me in a single game, but 8... it's insane.
That's some serious double-you-tee-fuck big brain power...like imagine if Morphy were alive today and had a chance to play against a super computer.

Really great videos, completely engaging!! Learning+Analysis+History+Entertainment, I'm really thankful for this channel. If it would be possible, I'd like to suggest if you can make videos about openings that ends up or involves queen-side castle; personally I'm a fan of queen-side castle xD
Morphy has never blundered like Magnus has been doing all year.

Morphy : plays and beats 8 players blindfolded 🙈
Me : can't even set the chessboard up blindfolded 🙈

I can memorize maybe about 6 moves for both black and white, then it's a mess lol

This man is spewing swag on everyone. "Hello everyone, welcome back to the good stuff"?! An absolute icon
:D :D :D
Who knew "The good stuff" applied to chess?
First time someone "spewed" on me and I felt good about it.
'...and now the knight is paralysed' statement pretty much describes most of my pieces whenever am playing chess
I have a couple of suggestions for better moves for white. At the 8:40 mark of the video, Morphy played Rac1, but I think f4 would be much better in order to keep white’s black square bishop in place, and also defend the e-pawn. Black would be stuck for a good move. Also, after Rac1 and black’s g5 response, I would have played f3 in order to keep that bishop on its strong diagonal.
In that era, Morphy didn't have so much resources like (Internet /books / Coaches etc), Still He played The Excellent Moves! If he had born in today's Age, No-one could Beat him! 😍❤️
" Broken crayons still color!" P. Morphy
Hoodie guy is back
The hoodie is getting quite a workout with this Morphy saga.
Lichess master's database has 4 games after black's fourth move. 3 of them were played in the 70s and ended in a draw, the last was played in 2007 with black as the winner
"Well. They are quite the team."
Thank you so much Sir
thank you for all the usb showings
Nicely played hoodie man!
Hello agadmator.... Nice to hear the nice praise from Wesley So.... Congratulations 👌👌👌
Can't believe dude passed on the free pawn on b2 @9:31...and he should have followed with Rd8, maybe after pushing his pawn to h4.

"Lowenthal: Morphy could do better here, better there.
But when he faces Morphy: we know how that ended." quote of the day.
Excellent
Agadmator please cover Richardson vs Delmar it's one if the best chess games I've ever seen

I think after move 4 the position has been repeated, as it is the exchange variation of the French. Perhaps in other games c6 was played after capturing on d5
Wow watching these Morphy games I can see how talented the man was truly gifted Chess Player Thanks Agadmator
Bierwirth was a pretty good player, when the game started out his position looked bad but he made Morphy work for his meal. Also, David Kimura is indeed and excellent subscriber.
Can you please make a pole asking your viewers how many of them put on their hoodies in honor of hoody guy, i always put mine on when he makes an appearance. Appreciate the content keep it up

@ 0:20 i thought he'll say 'we know nothing about him and we don't really care to'
5:55 'Capturing with the knight might work... but it doesn't!'

I love the title of this video, it is very deep.
Did Lowenthal actually misspell "probably" when he wrote his quote above the board? Probaly, yes.
4:41 thats all im here for you already kno
What an honor to go down in history only as a good chess player that made Murphy play for material and who has his own featured agad video.
Morphy with the white pieces opens with e4 and it was in this position on move one that The hoodie guy resigned as there is nothing more to be done.
Question, how does Agadmator make this videos? What program do he use, and what kind of setup/website allows him to move both white and black pieces freely?
I was surprised when you said that the position after black's 4th move had never been repeated. It's the sort of move that I might make in an exchange French. I checked and it actually comes up 176 times on the version of chessbase that I have on the iPad. Although I imagine that all of those started as exchange Frenches rather than as Mr Hoodie Guy's ...e6, ...c6 opening.
White's Be3 is when we get to a unique game. In 14 other games on the database I'm looking at, white played c3, Re1+, Nbd2 and c4. We don't transpose back into any other games beyond that point and I'm assuming the one game in the database is this one.
The thumbnail is out of this world
Agad getting better at thumbnails ;)
So the star of this video is not Morphy but the Hoodie Guy. "Mr. Bierwirth."
It was in this position that I immediately put on a hoodie
I very much believe that Morphy went for Rook Capture on f7 out of annoyance.
Oh...the good stuff
It’s cool to know Morphy was a Martrix fan.
Great header! Morphy is the One!
A tenacious defence against a blind man
Hi Medo! Long time no see, only sounds.
I hope I'm related to Mr Bernhard!
"already as of move 4 this position has never been reached again" that bad huh?
When Agadmator says “this position has never been reached before” does he mean before this particular game or in all time chess database?
i want to know too!
Nice rook lift at 4:42 :D
Legend says mr hoodie guy is still trying to capture the d5 pawn
