hey dude As an aspiring Black Metal Vocalist also bassist I'm very impressed with your song and video on how to create A Black Metal song I'm using a drum machine to record drum tracks as I've had trouble looking for drummers and my mates band does the same. you sir have given me confidence to work on my music even without A real drummer and shows you can work with programmed drums. thanks dude please do more videos like this. have a good day sir.
Walmart sells a good tape recorder with speaker and mic....I think the brand is onni or something. I'll check when I get home....you'll need 2 if you want 2 guitar tracks
Great job, thanks for the tutorial it's helpful! :). I liked your thoughts on the structure too, not all BM has to be pure blast beats and minor chords!
loved the minor stuff in the last half... it just gives that ominous feel with the perceived atonality. Half steps are really great too in all types of metal - it kind of trips up the mind which almost expects whole step movements, or symmetry, I guess on could say. I use that a lot with my doom metal writing, along with sliding into notes...
WOW! that was amazing i really like that.,i think that also we will also needs logic pro X to begin composing Black Metal music. Thanks always for your contribution.
Simon, I absolutely love your videos! I wished I had started playing the guitar 20 years earlier. And - for teaching reasons - I wished you were a German somewhere in Germany, haha :-D Keep those videos going. They help a lot.
I’ve got everything except for the facial hair... But I keep my high and tight fade from my marine corps days... it looks militant and tough... call it marine kvlt 😉
Dynamics? Talk about Panzer Division Marduk! 😁 I really enjoyed this video and I also liked a lot your approach to creating harmonies! The change of keys was also great! That's something I always kinda struggle with. The chorus sounds very nice, by the way
Ezeras Kroger death core is a different simpler sport. Its essentially metal roots with a few "woowaa" pitch slides and djent solos that BM or DM fans usually cringe at.
Averse concept = gud black metal. Corpse paint would have been a nice touch. Just for fun. :) Gotta admit , with those drums I didn't think it was going to work out, but it somehow all tied in nicely. Well done man.
Great tune! The only thing I would do differently is drench thoose guitars and drums with reverb. A favorite thing to do for me is to get impulse responses of any place I can and use that. Currently working on something with a IR from a thick pine forest during the winter
As i can see in your videos about black metal, it seems like it it really easy. Got two questions: 1) Is it possible to play in D standard, tune down D-Step and E-Standard? 2) May i choose between those techniques? Foollish questions but i'm new to black metal
Great video! Do you think you could do some sort of tutorial video for sweep picking? I've been really struggling to get a grasp on it, so any tips would be much appreciated!
Thanks to your beginner tutorial i can Play Black metal. my guitar skill is still crap but power chords and some dyads are no problem. Now it's time for learning tremolo picking :)
What about changing up those opening riffs to tackle manipulating the fifths? This is pretty common in black metal and bands like Emperor or Dimmu Borgir do this pretty frequently.
How do I know how to just write a riff? What are ways to know if there is a harmony or progression? I play guitar, but I have only learned chords and look up tabs, I have no idea how you would make up a riff.
The notes we had in the riff were C, and E so you could use those 2 notes in a C Major chord (notes C, E, G) or an A minor chord (notes A, C, E). So the notes C and E are in both a C Major chord and an A minor chord. Does that make sense?
Hey Simon, is essential studying music theory for more complex riffs and musical structure? I come on with cool sounding riffs but i never know how to structure that riff in a song, so i get stuck
It's not essential but it definitely helps and makes things easier. I would say as a musician though you should learn as much theory as you can/need to help you do what you want to do.
By the way, your "repetition" comment let me thought about Deathspell Omega's latest output (Synarchy of molten bones) which is mostly doing without repetition. Maybe you can handle one of their songs in one of your next videos. Although - at least for me - it is very difficult to access this particular release, I find it nevertheless highly attracting (if that's the proper phrase) and would love to hear your stance on it.
Too much music theory. Teloch would disapprove! Jk. Thanks for this tutorial- it inspires me just to go for it and be creative. I have a few ideas beyond my current abilities and it's been slowing me down!
I followed your instruction and ended up with exactly the same song
lmao
Haha!!!
Hahahahahahah
Hahaha that was funny!
This made my day
black metal song
step 1. corpsepaint
step 2. tremolo pick and blast beat
step 3. satan
step 4. record your song with a toaster
that's about it
trve kvlt
Haha!!
hi xasthur
In the case of xasthur replace satan with suicide
Nerdy_Jr.2737 I
That whole insight into 2 guitar tracks and how they complement each other was quite eye opening. Thanks!
I agree, very helpful tip
The riffing actually reminds me of later Burzum albums (Belus for instance). Very nice!
High compliment indeed!!
Oh yeh!
You earned a new subscriber based on the first thirty seconds of this video alone... the rest of your lessons - holy hell - amazing!! Thanks for all you do!
Thanks buddy
My guitar lead is blue like a flower.
A poisonous flower.
Lol!
You dont need five fingers on left hand, Lord Lokhraed has only two
haha true
matej kudláčik I was looking for that comment xD
was about to post the same lol
true, he has only two kkk
Yeah just use d tuning that way you can do power chords, minor, sharps etc
So for Old School BM you would just roll a bunch of dice and add that up to figure out the BPM :D
Yep!! :)
and play a round of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS at the same time.heh.
Yes
I would like to give this video and explanation in it a billion likes. That's precious.
Seriously, mate - thanks for this - having a visual mapping really helps someone like to be able put things together. This is infinitely helpful.
Thanks Justin. Glad you found it useful mate
Reminds me a lot of Alcest or Amesoeurs, especially that chorus type riff. Really nice.
Thanks
exactly!!!!
bmfan Amesoeurs is amazing ! Reminds me of Drudkh too
hey dude As an aspiring Black Metal Vocalist also bassist I'm very impressed with your song and video on how to create A Black Metal song I'm using a drum machine to record drum tracks as I've had trouble looking for drummers and my mates band does the same. you sir have given me confidence to work on my music even without A real drummer and shows you can work with programmed drums. thanks dude please do more videos like this. have a good day sir.
Cheers John mate. Hope the Black Metal project goes well.
Cheers dude I'm due to have my mate help with drums and distortion this month for some material I've written. keep up the great videos too
This is the best black metal tutorial that I've never seen, I follow you from Latinamerica.
"Internal Darkness"
"Yes"
Great lesson, I have written one riff so far and haven't made any progress as of yet
Keep going!!
Well, I have the internal darkness part down
\m/
I come up with my best black metal riffs after I stub my toe. Internal darkness engaged.
@@GoldCobra487 with me it's when i catch the tip o' my prong in the zip.
Been practicing the theory for a while and I've been getting a good fast picking technique down. Can't wait to start writing music soon.
I still use cassette recorders. ROCK ON man!
I think that's what Darkthrone used to do
Your an awesome charecter xD from the intro alone
put some evil whispering vocals on that chorus....!!
by the way..THANK YOU! you are a GREAT teacher!! please don't stop!
Thanks Carlos mate!
hell yeah
Cheers!
I love you, Simon - if I'm ever in your part of the world, I'm buying you a pint. :D
Cheers mate. It's a pint of red wine and rum!!
Still grinning at "Some form.... of beard..." But yes, totally necessary :O)
sounds too happy. needs more ear piercing distortion sound, more tremolo picking and more dissonance.
I would say it sounds like Post-Black or Blackgaze
Clearly not a fan of Lifelover.
ahjteam look up the ominous collective and on the channel there will be an artist by the name of Eg Hieter Shuckster, he is the best
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought "Hey, that sounds way too major-ey" to be Black Metal.

For years I've been looking for a fisher price cassette recorder for my black metal.
Any advice on that?
siggitiggi ebay. I reckon you'll get one for under £5 on there!!
Walmart sells a good tape recorder with speaker and mic....I think the brand is onni or something. I'll check when I get home....you'll need 2 if you want 2 guitar tracks
4 track cassette recorder vintage
Sounds like Woods of Desolation, one of my favorite black metal bands.
High praise indeed
That intro is gold
This is the best BM tutorial ever seen...tnx my man
Now this was a needed video. Great job!
weird he hasn't already done this before, he did do black metal technique videos though
It only came to me last night that I hadn't done this video and thought it needed to be done! Cheers Rayene! Cheers Morgoth.
Great job, thanks for the tutorial it's helpful! :). I liked your thoughts on the structure too, not all BM has to be pure blast beats and minor chords!
Thanks :)

Goddamnit, blast beat in triplet-feel and this would be so black metal
For me, this is the absolute most helpful video I have ever seen. Many thanks, to you.
the last riff was the best
Your channel is the best on YT sir.
Picked up quite a few things already following your vids ^^
how do you like the dragon picks? looks intersting but something like gravity picks seem a bit more standard. i cant choose
They're great. Chicken Picks Shredders are my favourite though
Reminds me of Peste Noire! Great video as always.
He's pure musical evil but his voice sounds so nice and relaxing
I wrote lyrics and now I just need the music. this was helpful and fun to watch.
Any suggestions for learning to hold the chords?
WOW! that was amazing i really like that.,i think that also we will also needs logic pro X to begin composing Black Metal music. Thanks always for your contribution.
Name of the song from the Darkthrone riff
mate i love the expression of your face after you said "Black Metal"
Haha!! Thanks mate
Simon, I absolutely love your videos! I wished I had started playing the guitar 20 years earlier. And - for teaching reasons - I wished you were a German somewhere in Germany, haha :-D Keep those videos going. They help a lot.
Thanks mate!!
Imo, the best part of this clip is from 17:58... that sounds more like bm than the other stuff. Kinda reminds me about Burzum in a way ;)
sounds like 90's dance. (a good thing imho). No valley too deep no mountain too high...
You know I watch this video once a while and the funny stuff gets me everyone time! I swear. But its a great Lesson!
You did a really good job! The song even sounds great.
I’ve got everything except for the facial hair...
But I keep my high and tight fade from my marine corps days... it looks militant and tough... call it marine kvlt 😉
Thanks, Simon!
Dynamics? Talk about Panzer Division Marduk! 😁
I really enjoyed this video and I also liked a lot your approach to creating harmonies! The change of keys was also great! That's something I always kinda struggle with.
The chorus sounds very nice, by the way
I can sense Burzum influence in the song you created. I like it.
Thanks buddy
Love your videos man! Good content and a healthy dose of humour, can you do a tutorial for Doom Metal/Stoner Rock sometime please? Cheers!
he did..
Where? Can't see one in his vids, only a few individual track tutorials?
Thank you in advance!
Nevermind I misunderstood your comment sorry, thought you wanted song lessons
Rayene Boussetta no worries!
Great vid Simon very helpful as usual :)
Thanks buddy
Thank you this was immensely helpful! will you be uploading more kyteler song tutorials?
Did one last night :)
It would be awesome if you do one on deathmetal or deathcore :)
Good shout!
Ezeras Kroger death core is a different simpler sport. Its essentially metal roots with a few "woowaa" pitch slides and djent solos that BM or DM fans usually cringe at.
You do know that deathcore is more than just Suicide Silence right? Go listen to stuff like Despised Icon and tell me again how simpler it is
@@joshjohnson3938 Try Infant Annihilator and see if that's simple.
do you record the guitar parts in 1 take or do you record them in sections and put them together?
When writing, I record them in separate takes, but when recording properly I'd play them in one take.
that song sounds great but i think that wouldn't be black, it's more like post-black
He wants to keep the tr00 kvlt thing for his next Album...
Re4l pvr3 trve kvlt record their albums with acoustic guitars, playskool microphones and generic recording software not that bullshit he uses, sorry!
I like what he does... I couldn't care less if you consider it to be tr00 kvlt or not.
Maybe you have not realized that I'm being sarcastic?
isnt the big rule in black metal is to use all minor chords.....because he's using some major, which makes it more like melodic metal
That B flat chrod on first 3 strings(thinier one),sounds best.
This is fascinating. I want to do this. How are you recording these IRs? Any chance I can demo some of your outdoor IRs?
As i can see in your videos about black metal, it seems like it it really easy.
Got two questions:
1) Is it possible to play in D standard, tune down D-Step and E-Standard?
2) May i choose between those techniques?
Foollish questions but i'm new to black metal
D standard, or GTFO.
4:00 it reminds me one of the harakiri songs and the tone is perfectly theirs :D damm
I news more of this, do you have other lessons like this one?
Actually sounds more like an Atmospheric Black Metal
Great video! Do you think you could do some sort of tutorial video for sweep picking? I've been really struggling to get a grasp on it, so any tips would be much appreciated!
no offense but seriously do some research before asking
Beautiful guitar and tone man. The riffs remind me of winterfylleth.
Siebenbürgen likes to play those shapes from Riff 1
Thanks to your beginner tutorial i can Play Black metal. my guitar skill is still crap but power chords and some dyads are no problem.
Now it's time for learning tremolo picking :)
\m/
thanks it's about time!!
Sounds very Katatonia Brave Murder Day, to me anyway. Love that album.
can you do a video about maybe a little more complicated drums like inquinamentum
Or pink for happiness or yellow for sunshine. And Clownpaint for more happiness
i love writing wonderwall
Guitar newb question: around 5:25 when you say "that could go over a C or an A minor", can you explain what you mean?
The notes we had in the riff were C, and E so you could use those 2 notes in a C Major chord (notes C, E, G) or an A minor chord (notes A, C, E). So the notes C and E are in both a C Major chord and an A minor chord. Does that make sense?
Ah I think I get it. And in choosing which notes are in the second riff, you're also solidifying which key the song is in, right?
I think a blast beat would sound good on your opening
Please play Grafvitnir on acoustic guitar
+1 subscriber to Simon! Great work, sir!
You're hilarious. Love your sense of humor.
Thanks buddy 👍
kind of has a style similar to wolves in the throne room
amazing dude
Thanks mate

Pretty good but you forgot one thing. Reverb for the drums and/or mix overall.
