  • Mastering the valve drill is essential for divers using doubles, whether in twinset or sidemount configuration. Contrary to common belief, it is not an emergency procedure but a skill-building exercise to understand equipment and develop muscle memory.
This video breaks down a variation of a valve drill procedure, emphasizing the importance of thorough comprehension over speed. The step-by-step process involves shutting down valves, managing regulators, and performing checks. Maintaining communication and eye contact with the team is crucial during the exercise, and the importance of signalling out-of-air in case of confusion is highlighted.

I just started diving twinset and assembled my own set last weekend. I didn't get a chance to do the drill last weekend (diving with rec drivers) but after that dive I had someone approach me because of the twinset. They had recently did their basic cave training and moved to the area (far from any caves!) and was looking to practise drills. So finally, I may have a solution to my practising problem.
The coincidental timing of all your videos is crazy.

One bit of advice - for drysuit divers also integrate a step just before you start the normal drill. Ask yourself if you have enough gas in your suit to allow you to reach. If you're too vacuum packed it can be a bit too difficult. Also, while you're at it check that you can also back-kick as you may need to or else you may crash I to your buddy or the reef - again, if you're too vacuum packed this is very difficult.
If you have extreme difficulty reaching valves you may need to resort to reconfiguring your harness so that the cylinders aren't being pulled too low by the crotch strap. Consider tilting the isolation valve forward slightly. I'm not a fan of blaming equipment, but at some point you may have accept that it's not (purely) a skill issue.
Perhaps a follow up video to this with troubleshooting tips might be useful?

You make everything look so easy. I wouldn't be able to stay in a perfect position even without having to move my arms at all. If I raised my hand, I would go sideways and eventually I would be at the bottom or 10 meters higher.

Excellent video as always. Kind of a strange question, but I'm wondering if you guys use a voice synthesizer for the narration? If so, it's definitely one of the better ones. Of course, it doesn't take away from the incredibly high production value of these videos, though.

Everything is easy when you do it in warm waters wearing no undersuit and drygloves. Here in Russia we do long dives (2-4h) in 2-4C cold water wearing two layers of thermal underwear and than heated Santi Flex 2.0 on it and than again heated BZ400 on top of all that. We also use Santi heated gloves. We take 4 batteries for all of it. You use Santi so you know what Im talking about. Dry hood is also a must. This normal dive setup here, no big deal. There is no way you will reach valves on your twinset with that setup. Many of your standard DIR drill and tips are useless when you dive in Russia. Warm water is for pussies, from Russia with Love ❤
