    I love how after winning a major war and being made the first leader of a new nation, George Washington voluntarily left his position and returned to being a simple farmer; he gave the spotlight to someone else and didn't desperately try to stay relevant. That's a real hero, right there.

    • @yoloswaggins7121
      @yoloswaggins7121 Год назад +138

      He was heavily inspired by Cinncinatus, an ancient Roman who the Romans considered to be the model example of a "dictator". In Rome's Republican political system, a "dictator" would be appointed in times of crisis. They would gain absolute power for a limited time in order to address the crisis. Cinncinatus was one such dictator who immediately resigned from politics and went back to farming upon solving the crisis he was faced with, and Washington sought sought emulate him.
      The city of Cinncinati is named for him

    • @filipwolffs
      @filipwolffs Год назад +88

      @@yoloswaggins7121 What's even more impressive about Cincinnatus is that this happened not once but twice. Twice Cincinnatus was called upon to resolve a crisis, both times he did exactly that much faster than anyone would have expected, and both times he immediately surrendered his position so he could get back to his farm.
      Of course, it might just be that he really liked the peaceful life of a farmer, but that doesn't take away the fact that this is a man who successfully resisted the temptations of power despite twice having the opportunity to seize control of the Roman Republic.

    As a brit, I only ever really feel patriotic when viewing our nations past. Say what you will about the morality of it but in the words of Dave Chapelle - "don't judge a photograph because it wasn't taken today". All that aside, over the course of the two videos I've gone from feeling slightly scorned by the Americans basically mugging off the British to kick things off (knowing too how it ends of course), to now feeling like the American victory in this war was not only absolutely well deserved, due to intelligent strategy and British ineptitude, but also that the manner of the victory speaks so much to how present day America holds itself. Listing them would be mundane, but just thinking about the parallels is facinating

    • @Rivarya
      @Rivarya Месяц назад +1

      The concept of “historical relevance” doesn’t make any sense when you’re talking about morales. Causing human suffering e.g colonialism, slavery, sexism, etc is objectively bad as are the people or nations who did those things.
