I do wish people would stop being tone elitists and expecting a $200 modeling amplifier which is basically a sampling box of assorted chocolates to botique amplifiers that cost thousand and are made to sound awesome. Yes, we know, it doesn't sound as good as this or that, but why not acknowledge what it does well, and ask if it delivers what it aims for?
I think the thing sounds pretty good. The tech on the other hand is the reason I would never buy it. It has proven itself too buggy and unreliable.
I'm actually using the 100 watt head as a gigging amp, straight to the PA and it sounds great. I use the effects send as a direct out into a DI box. I also plug a shorted 1/4" cable into the effects return, to shut the speaker output off.
Just bought one these things this week and all I can say is it kicks so much ass and literally leaves my ears ringing. The JCM 800 is the main reason I bought it and is pretty much identical to the real thing. It can melt faces. I'm Preordering the 100 watt 2x12 version because I loved the 25 so much.
At first I was pretty suprised at how well this sounded, then I remembered Fluff could make nails on a chalkboard sound badass!
This is actually decent if you can work an EQ. When I first got mine the presets were utter poo but it honestly does work better than most amps once you get the EQ going
I luvvvv my little code 25. Perfect for my small project studio with its small footprint and BIG Marshall tones! If you want simulated classic Marshall sounds, then it just makes sense to go to the source.
NO! The app is NOT required, u can set up everything on the amp without havin an apple or android....
Gaming but it’s kind of a mess. And the bluetooth connection will only work when the planets align so… yeah, there is excellent software on pc. You just need a mini usb cable.
Great amps!! I have owned both code 25 and 50 for 2 years and they both perform phenomenally!!! GOOD JOB MARSHALL
Hey i have a question does it work well with multieffect processor ?
Yes it stills good
I have the CODE 50 and love it
Hamilton 2wheeler same
Is it good for metal
that's the question right there
Patrick Quintos People have used the Code 50 and 100 for metal.
Just a matter of tweaking the right settings. Some have added overdrive pedals, of course.
Whoa...practice amps have sure come a long way in the last 15 years. For 200 bucks a beginner can get a taste of different amps and effects.
Not bad, not bad at all.
Played the Code 50 recently through an ESP Ltd Eclipse loaded with an 85/81 and all of the top set of the presets out of the box, with no editing, sounded pretty amazing and faithfully accurate to the amps in their catalog. Some of their other patches that model other well known American amplifiers were pretty good and highly usable. My only complaint about this is the Bluetooth as you mentioned and the editing screen is about the same size an X3 PRO and takes a little curve to master, but nothing like the curve for a Kemper or fractal unit. A very usable practice amp and home recording amp.
If this sounded bad and somewhat Line 6 Spider-esque, I would be very depressed. It sounded great, which just backs up what Lemmy said about how you don't even need to try Marshall amps before buying them, they're that good.
I tried one last week. Out of all the modeling amps, I liked it the most. I plan on buying one. The one thing that sucks is FS is sold seperately.
Cameron Jenkins lemmy from motorhead?
I think that this an amazing example of all a little Marshall can be. But the part that really kind of made my hair stand on end was the playing. Your riff in this video was amazing. I'd love to see it as a full song.
that riff he played first was amazing, do you by chance have tabs for it?
what is name of this song?
Fluff, this demo is bad ass Sir! And that chugging riff is to die for! This sounded very Sabbath like to me! Killer job bro!
This is the best Code demo I have found so far... by far.
I've now tried a dozen or so modelling amps. Vox, Marshal, Fender... They all have one thing in common. The older they get, the more the begin to malfunction in spectacular ways. These amps are disposable and nearly valueless in the used market. I wish the manufacturers would concentrate on making high quality low watt amps for the bulk of people buying amps, who just use them at home. Seeing planned obsolesce built into something that doesn't traditionally suffer this, is sad. I already pitch away $2500 MacBooks every two years for a new one.. Not my music equipment too;-)
every two years? jesus christ
MonsterCaffeine ...or there abouts;-) The point remains the same though;-)
***** Well that's the first sign. Randomly chasing volume, effects that stop working or work intermittently. The trouble with these amps, is that they're built with cheap components, designed to fail. It's called planned obsolescence. How do you make people buy more shit... buy stuff that lasts only so long. But I defy you to take any solid state amp from the 80's and older and see it fail outside of normal use. Apart from scratchy pots, which any amp will suffer.. it's your only concern with an older amp, generally. You should check out AVE on youtube and see how cheap these components can be, and how spectacularly they can fail.
+Woodeso's Guitar Mods what would be a good solid state amp from the 80s that i can find today on craigslist and such for a reasonable price? preferably for metL
+MonsterCaffeine *metal
Loved the song, very Tremonti-esque! would love to hear a long version. I also didn't dislike the tones as much as most of the comment section, the low end is not huge but pretty defined and clear, and the mids cut well. Dunno how much of that was post production, but it sits quiet nicely in the mix.
these modeling amps get a bad reputation because the presets suck and some of the newbies dont know how to dial in the tones
Some of the online presets on the other hand... absolutely gorgeous! I use this amp for cleans like mayer perfectly, handles jazz as if my superstrat turned into a Hollowbody, and high gains like heaven! It even has enough power to let me play at church and be asked to turn down!
Yeah, pretty much all digital amp presets suck.
That's a really nice Tele you've got there.
Seems like Marshalls answer to the fender champion, which I might say is genius, and mustang, and honestly the code sounds great and seems gigable
You have to play this amp at your nearest music store if you like marshall sound and drive this little beast will blow away any digital modelling amp. I have played it it puts my line 6 spider 4 120 watts amp to shame. It has a great tone and you need good guitar to play this amp. I played it with my les paul 1978 it is the amp edit and turn few knob you get the best of both world's less spending awesome sound. Listening on youtube.com doesn't give your fair idea go and play it real time.
I keep hearing this argument and yet other amp demos sound good on youtube - no-one seems to make this particular amp sound anything other than shit, even when micced up with quality gear.
What mic are you using there? sounds awesome
MXL 2006
It says in the description
don't know why people are hating so much.. i just bought this after watching your demo. I have a dsl100 but i hardly get it above 2, so having a practice amp that can emulate Marshall stuff is great. my current practice amp is one of those orange pix crush amps, which doesn't sound that great but years ago I enjoyed it. this one was less money and just seems better.
since you made the spider sound good i can't trust you anymore
Great demo. This amp is very intriguing! Thank you for showing it off man.
I've tried one out at my local music store. Sounded way better than I expected
Really like this room and its colours! And the tone of the Tele!
Thanks for the video! I'm sold on this amp after looking into a bunch of options.
Gotta say that modelling generally isn't my thing and neither is cooky gadgetry but that sounded really cool and my experience of your channel and work tells me it's an honest representation, mix wise etc. Alot of people seem to be commenting about the use of single coils and the low end - well that says more about their experiences than anything. Yes single coils are bright but and have a lot of overtones on the lows, but that low end can be very focused and powerful due to the magnetic window. I think that the mid focus has a lot more to do with the fact that it's a classic Marshall voice thing. Recorded direct I dare say there would be more apparent lows and highs, without the limitations of a small driver, cabinet and impedance dependent transistor power amp. I think the honest sound of it in a room is represented here. Good job sir. Very classy looking tele, I thought it was the Richie Kotzen model at first.
I'd be curious to hear the Code 100w head. I wonder if Mesa Boogie will follow suit. I love how everyone is discussing your Telecaster more than the amp.
Sounds awesome man, can you tell us what setting you are using at the start?
The sound is incredible!!!
My CODE 50 arrived last week, I was a bit surprised when you said your bluetooth range was poor at roughly 2 feet. I just tried my android phone, I don't have that much space but it works from the next room somewhere around 15 - 20 feet. It stops working between 20 and 30 feet. So your short range might not be typical.
Nice review though.
That's the beefiest tele I've ever heard.
I agree
You haven't heard so many Telecasters
Teles have the beefiest single coil tone IMO. I’ve had mine for 11 years, no regrets.
I saw this video fluff and bought one because of you. I love it!
Holy shit i love Tele's. They sound brutal. Awesome amp too. Gotta have. Be great for small and medium gigs. Thanks Ryan Bruce
Hey Fluff! How loud is that bad boy? My kid needs a practice/rehearsal amp to jam with me at home and his buddies in their garage. Do you think this would work or should I step him up to the 50 watt version?
This sells it for me. Getting one asap!
man you play really sick riffs. are they yours?
What amp or you using at 0:38 ? The one that is chugging along during the song. That's the amp I want!
still stand by this amp having good sounds? Curious as i want to pick one up for the fun of it. I can get one dirt cheap. I haven't heard anything good about these amps but am still curious with all the Marshall digital talk in the last week or two and compared to what's out now for modelling.
How do you like the MXL 2006? I just looked online as I'm looking for new microphones to mic my cab with and it's surprisingly cheap for how good it sounds!
very good video. I liked that you showed how to use the software and make changes as you were playing.
Pretty slick but is it just another gimmick ? What do you really think of it and how relevant is it to anything else like the peavey pro 100 and so on? Thanks Fluff.
Must ya upload these sounds with a smartphone or are they standard in the amplifier?
I'm thinking about recording with my CODE50 and I think I'm going to record out from the USB port and buy a daw, because the amp has a lot of uncontrollable low end... Does anybody have experience with recording on this thing?
Yeah, I really really wouldn't recommend recording out of the USB, use a microphone out of the front instead
Hey Fluff, I agree, the JCM 800 model did have the noticeable characteristics and tone. I think it's it's a great amp for someone on a budget who needs an all-in-one package, and definitely beats out the Spider, Mustang, and Vipyrs. One thing though, were you able to use the foot switch, and was it able to go through your savings/presets? Thanks for the demo, I plan on buying one.
What kind of tuning do you use?
That was a great song to demo the amp!
Hello ryan,i have marshall code 25 too,and on my combo 1 promblem, when i play on clean sound in low octave i have a noise!!! do you have that problem too???
How well would a modelling amp work in a studio? Thinking of getting the CODE Head if it doesn't lack quality and such.
sounds amazing in the first song you played!
Hey Fluff was wondering if you have tried out many German Amplifier brands like Diezel , ENGL and Huges and Kettner? I got a Huges and Kettner TriAmp 2 and its amazing. Chur from New Zealand.
I just got my Code 50 yesterday. I like it so far but I can't seem to find a setting that sounds good through my headphones.Theres just no volume...Any suggestions???
You are the second US reviewer to give the impression this only does Marshall modelling, TTK gave the same impression, the models also include American Clean (Fender-ish) CR American (Bassman-ish) 50s British (VOX-ish) and OD American (Boogie-ish)
I am using reaper and Marshall Code. I dont know if you could help me with my situation ?. I can record on reaper by using Code. However, it did not take in consideration VST plug-ins while I added them to FX Track , like Gate, IRs., distortion....
Nice playing, nice Show and nice guitar. Thank's from germany...
I am thinking of getting the 100W head and pair it with a 2x12 to solve the boxiness caused by the small speakers. Would a 100W solid state model be too loud for home usage? I do plan to gig with it too.
I could get the 50W combo with the 1x12 speaker but I don't think my friend can carry that on a plane easily, so that leaves the head as the only logical choice.
I like the Telecaster you are using, is a standard or a custom shop?
It's a mexican
How is the MXL 2006 for you? cheers
Sounds decent enough, but there's a certain boxyness to the tone during some of the riffs which seem a bit weak.
Like Adam said, plus it was mic'd up. So some of it might be the setup and personal taste. I was lucky enough to get a 50 pretty early and really like it.
You like that MXL mic? I've been a fan of the MXL 990.
This looks like a nice amp to have to practice at home and to take with you to a small gig. I have a big Marshall AVT that I hate having to take with me because it's big, heavy, and cumbersome.
The amp is sooooooo good! I just bought it a few days ago. The app sucks. And it has done ever since it went out. Can you guys please tell me what brand and model of tablet or smart phone I should buy to use it with the app? It's a shame the app seems to work only on Tutorial Guitar player guys. Thanks
Is this AMP good as a first AMP?
Dajwer of course
Thanks for the Tele love fluff. You da real MVP.
I like the modeled clean sounds...they would sound good in bridges or weird little quiet parts in a song...sounds almost like they have a lp filter on them...
How do you think it stacks up against other small practice amps? I was considering buying one because they're quite reasonably priced. Also, how loud do they get? Just for home use or possibly band practice?
Saul Rivera Just home use for 25 watts. Unless you're performing solo.
What pickups do you have in the bridge position of that Telecaster?
I am here because I found one of these, nearly brand new, at a thrift store for $25 bucks. I wanted to see if I got my money's worth and I would say that I definitely did!
hey Ryan, dyou ever get to try a Marshall Code 412 Cabinet, they're dirt cheap at €235 on Thomann.de is it ever wise to buy a 4x12 cab if it's super cheap?
Nice 90s Rock vibe!
Beautiful Tele!
is there any better on quality/price amps around? for a first Amp, im learning so..
Awesome!!!
Can you tell me whats the settings of Marshall Code used in this vídeo, please?
very good video, you know how to make videos learn a lot from the phone to the amp settings also you explain with very good quality and play very good, i will buy the amps thanks to your video
Love the video. I really enjoyed the song I actually am trying to watch and learn it..lol did you write it?
Would you recommend this over Orange Crush RT20?
I wonder how one of these would sound if you disconnected that little speaker in the combo and hooked it up to a 4x12. Some practice amps can sound pretty decent if you turn them into a head.
Thanks for the video, i like the design of this 25, can i use it for listening music
Great review! Just got it with coupon at GC for 159.99 as a practice amp.
Not sure if I should get the code 50 or orange crush 35 to hold me over till I can afford an axe fx
Guys, if you don't like the tone of these amps, you can just turn off the cab button. This will limit the diversity of sound, but it still helps from this sound "from the barrel"
Just ordered this, sounds really good. I wonder if those are ready presets sound this good.
That first track you played sounded great!
Nice jam, brother. Thanks for the review.
I expect it to be a matter of time before a tube amp can be controlled in this manner. How bout retrofitting my Mark IV and JCM 800?
The short distance is going to hurt sales until they get that sussed. Why go to market with it as is though?
What type of mic are you using? I love the sound you are getting from this amp!
Never mind I failed to look at the description
Are Riff Wars difficult to organise?
always like hearing your rhythm.
great job dude
\m/
Yessireeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeebob!
Great stuff Fluff, Great demo, your tune has sold me an amp!
Are you using stock tele pickups?
Digging the riffage! Sounds kind of like Black Stone Cherry
the upside of gear like this is decent tones for practice amp money. even the 100 watt code head is priced like some practice amps! you can be loud and gigging without too much thought or worry and have decent tones. meshuggah used the line 6 vetta back in the day! personally, I'm almost too lazy to keep my guitars in decent working order. Having better, tweakable sounds on the cheap is the order of the day for quite a few players nowadays.
I have this amp, great little modelling to play with
man... that Tele... Im in love...
Awesome sound of amp, and nice playing man!
dude can you do a demo on the yamaha thr10x or can you recomend me something im looking for a practice amp that haves few effects and few amps on board so that i can get some good cleans and distortions sounds till i get my fractal axefx
Change of scenery, I like it.
Marshall combo controlled by an app? what will they think of next?
Can we use this for base guitar?
