Something wasn't right in how the amp was setup / recorded. It appears that cab modeling was enabled and that the internal speaker was used simultaneously and mic'd like a normal guitar cab. If so you are basically running the sound of an amp into a speaker cab into a speaker cab into a mic. Sounds like a blanket is thrown over the amp.

As an owner of a Code 50 myself I can immediately see that he didn't have the master volume high enough. They don't really start to sound good until the master goes over 2 by which point it's too loud for most people's home environment. I've been gigging mine with the master on 3. The supplied presets are really horribly overdone to my ears. I'm using my own JTM45 and Plexi presets and am enjoying performing with it.

    • @KleyDeJong
      @KleyDeJong 8 лет назад +4

Paula Thomas Valid point on the presets. I've never experienced a modeler - even the Axe Fx - that sounds great with stock presets. Build your own from scratch for much better results.

  • @PeterDad60

I purchased a new Marshall Code 50 a few day's back. Let me warn you all. At first it sounds like the shitiest amp you will ever hear. Especially if you play it sitting next to it at moderate volumes as you are adjusting the presets and experimenting.
Once you stand away from the amp and then crank up the volume THEN it sounds real good. I was on the verge of sending mine back it sucked so bad. I hated it. I thought it was the worst amp in HISTORY! But that's because I had to lower the volume while I was sitting next to the amp or become deaf. Once I moved into another larger room where I could stand away from the amp I could crank up the volume. All of a sudden that piece of crap sounded damn good.
Evidently Marshall Amplification thinks we all use our amps in live gigging situations and play loud. Marshall is the King of Loud! Well you are all educmakated now. Stand away from your new Code amp and crank it loud -you will so love the Marshall tones coming from your new light weight digital combo amp, you will love everything about it. It's small size and weight, it's LOUD Volume and it's Marshall Tones. Give it a try.
Seriously Marshall you better issue an addendum note stating to stand away and crank this amp otherwise it sounds like shit if you are within arms length making adjustments and forced to keep the volume down or go deaf. Crank your Marshall.

I agree with you Peter, the Marshall Code Amps sound far better when you push the volume and stand back a bit. I own the head & cab and once I get the volume at around 4-5, and stand 7 ft back, it sounds like a beast. Just eq your sounds for a bit of volume and distance. Marshall certainly must think all of its customers typically play at gig volumes, haha!

The dumbest decision Marshall made was to put a generic grade guitar speaker in these amplifiers. The amplifiers have built-in cab simulation, which sounds stupid through a guitar speaker. My recommendation is to replace the speaker with a flat response speaker, like the Celestion X-200. I did this, and now my Marshall code sounds completely awesome with the built-in cab simulations.

I own this exact amp. I get the people saying they hate it. It takes a bit of learning (the Cab modeling function should never be on... that thing blows), and can sound muddy as hell with the wrong settings, but you can get some really nice sound from it with a bit of work.

Really well done review of the Marshall CODE 50. Probably the best I've seen so far. Thanks so much! One tip though, my friend. No one is ever going to take you all that serious with that guitar. Still, for those who haven't, stay with the video, the code amps are great as practice, and small gig usage. The reviewer is far better than his guitar choices. ; )

IMO it's fine to get a basic idea from a RUclips video, but I agree that you must try it out live to really hear its capabilities. I found RUclips vids especially helpful for pedals. I recently wanted to check out reverb pedals. There's no way I could have tested 10 pedals side by side like the RUclips video did. I took notes and got a good idea which ones I would like the best, though I will try before buying.

Sorry but I don't agree with that - I REALLY wanted to like this amp, but every review I have seen it sounds like crap! add to that all the technical issues a huge amount of people are having, plus the 50 being far too loud at low volume settings and it's a disaster. Like I said I really wanted to like this but it would just be nuts to get a code amp right now with so many other better options out there. If it had any name other than marshall on it it would be dismissed instantly by most guitarists.

I had this amp for over a week and it does sound better then this video demo(check out the master volume on the code 50 in this video, it is set too low to sound any good) but the code 50 has some issues, the big one is that when i edited presets and changed parameters the amp would lock up with no sound coming out of the amp this did not happen every time i used the amp but it happened 3 out of 5 times that i did use the amp ,i contacted marshall and they said they were aware of it but when i got a reply email the tech support asked me what type of phone i was using! I sent him another email stating i did not edit the code 50 from a i phone and i did the editing only from the amp,i got another reply saying that the tech guys were looking in to it.
I really wanted to like this amp but with the lock up problem i just could not keep it so i sent it back for a refund,i might buy the amp again if marshall fixes this problem, maybe a firmware update will do it?
Richard, what were some of the technical issues that you heard about this amp?

I'm pretty new to guitar, being a piano composer/improviser. My primary axes are jazz guitars (old Epiphone Joe Pass II) played through a ported in the back Fender Acoustasonic 90...I did that mod myself to open the sound up, which it did for jazz guitar. I got a Fender Squire Tele classic vibe 50's maybe a year ago because everybody has to try a Tele, right? But I did not have an appropriate amp and wanted an amp which would give me a chance to experience what the spanky tele can deliver...the world of the electric guitar which I've listened to but never really played. So I looked at a $210 used Marshall code 50 at guitar center, and got it.
The amp has a 12" speaker, and to my ear, size of speaker is really valuable and key for balanced presentation of tonal harmonic footprint through all the registers (deep to high sounds.)
I like the presets, because I'm experimenting. So this is a beginner's move, and I mean, for this price, I think I got a true value, and will lift it off the floor a bit as some recommend. I'm having fun at a price I can afford. I did play other amps but they cost a lot more. So there's a newbie's perspective! Good playing to you all.

It depends on which ID amps. There are two lines after all. The ID core line is a bit basic and not very tube like. The ID:TVP line (which is Blackstar's high end digital amps that the ID core are cheap knock off of) is very tube like. It literally behaves like a tube amp more so than any other none Tube amp out their short of a AMP FX or a Kemper which cost way more.
Honestly I'm glad you like your Marshall code but most everybody I now says they sound like crap and I have to agree. I think they are a touch better than the Line 6 Spider IV line but not much else.

I demoed the 50 and what I didn't care for was the sound when you rolled the guitars volume back...rather than cleaning up with a nice , warm and smooth cleanish tone, it still retained the harsh barking mids of the sound wide open sans gain, no good...then I tried the more expensive Marshall tube dsl 40 and it cleaned up beautifully and had marvelous, complex crunch sounds...more money though.

Cons of this code 50 amplifier:
    - the loudspeaker should be a guitar one, not a broadband one
    - no line out (A - B)
    - when saving presets it often hangs and you have to turn it off and on again
    - no effects loop
    - simulations of individual amplifiers do not impress with their sound

I know Im one of few metal guitarists commenting here but I wish they would do some heavy stuff during the demos. You rarely find it. Eh, I think Im already convinced on the Peavey Vypyr though.

The MArshall Gateway app does NOT work with all phones. So you'd better check out ( at play store) that first if it is important for you. I Got a 2016-17 phone and the app is not compatible as it says on the download section on play store. THey should have it compatible available fro most phones.

My suggestion to people buying amps. Don't get dragged away by fancy amps with tons of in built feature. Don't think it's good for you. Just buy an amplifier with amazing clean tone reproduction and one that can handle pedals really well. You are much better off with a great amp with less functionality rather than an okay amp with all of it. You as a musician want creative freedom and for that you want to use different pedals to really find your tone, not get stuck with the tones given to you in the amp. Faithful reproduction of sound is supreme when choosing an amp. Rest all is secondary. So buy a fender deluxe or a peavy bandit or something with great sound and slowly add pedals of your liking to it. You are way way better off with that choice.

I have this amp and it sounds terrible here.
I also have the black star Id 60 head
For home recording through the line out the Marshall wins by a mile.
The presets on the Marshall are also terrible.
The mod effects are poor with the Marshall but Jvm od,jcm800 od and silver jubilee od are great when set up correctly.
I also own the JVM 410 head and compareing recordings between the code and the valve head it's about 85% there at a quarter of the price and a lot lighter which is why a bought one for practice and rehearsal .

To compressed, the notes are not clear enough, sounds like trough ''a radio'', even with a good pair of monitors. Like doesn't push air. The drive is kind of ''burned'' if i can use this term, like some insects are buzzing. Blackstar is a better choice for sure.
