Classic Captain
Crank the gain, Lee!
* Captain turns it up to 5
Bro, that comment made my day😂
+oogaw then Rob rolls off the volume coz it's too gainy @ 5 lol
+oogaw My Boogie seems to breaks up into crackle and fizz once pushed past 5 on the modern setting so maybe he wasn't unjustified. There is sometimes when too much gain can be a bad thing.
You just made me spit out my soda. 😂
hahahahaha
I think the tl;dr is this is a PERFECT, BEGINNER amp.
I just started playing, and chose this as my first amp. I think it's a perfect home... practice... and most importantly, first... amp. I understand how more experienced players will s*** all over this, but given my situation, it's the perfect amp because:
1) I have no idea what my sound or tone is or what even sounds good. This lets me play with marshall sounds as well as fender sounds, etc and really experiment and figure out where I want to go with my next "real" amp. I can download some presets from people who maybe know more about what they're doing. It really lends itself to learning how to dial in an amp properly for a beginner.
2) the headphone jack. I know it sounds worse than it being played normal, but nobody in my paper thin walled apartment needs to hear me learn.
3) affordable. perfect for a newbie on a budget.
4) It's loud enough to grow with.
5) Being new, I don't have any pedals.
Most reviews s*** on it, and I get that, but no one is reviewing it through the eyes of someone starting out IMO.
(I appropriately used colons and semicolons so you can trust what I say)
This amp is actually beautiful as a thing in a room. not that terrible-looking stuff of other ±equal amps
I am very pleasantly surprised by how good the CODE sounds.
It's still got that modelling, uncanny valley, sound, but it sounds a whole lot better than its price point.
It would make a killer practice amp, the app integration is slick.
Now I just need to talk myself out of getting one.
+SlickDude Do it!!! (that way I don't have to lol)
I watch all their videos. Danny and I were just chatting about this amp... I needed to see iy for myself. I'm torn between thus and the new Vox AV series. I had an Amplify 150 for a bit but never fell for it. This seems similar but with a little more soul...
+CSGuitars Would love to see a demo, or hear in the flesh the the stack version of these, they sound great!
+CSGuitars Dont talk yourself out of it i want to see you review it
I bought the Code 100 combo. I love it. And it's definitely more than a practice amp, plus it comes with an effects loop and speaker out.
Wow, the modulation on the Captain's voice when he listed the various effects, crazy amount of production going into this video
1:32 - love Rob´s face when Lee voicecracks lol
+Mads Heimdal Henriksen Rob is 40.
+David Oakes ??
ROB IS 40.
Picked a CODE 50 up off of Craigslist for $100...love it, playing it nightly, what a deal, the phone app is fun and actually helpful. I love the Sound and flexibility.
June 2, 2016... I just received my CODE 50 and ran through the 99 presets and like a lot of them. My android phone easily connected over Bluetooth and the next step is to start tweaking for my likes and needs. thanks guys for showing how to adjust the various settings and don't let the naysayers win out because there is definately a place in the Marshall product line for a leading edge amplifier that is also easy to custom and can do so many different voices.... smaller amp are in for now and less gear and this may be the wave of the future.
Think we should start a guitar-amp game where another person remotely changes the settings and the player has to immediately play a song that matches the new tone...
points are given for how many seconds it takes the audience to agree the song matches the tone. i.e. 1 sec =10 point , 3 sec= 5 points, 5 seconds= 1 point....
first one to 100 wins.

chappers sure grows hair fast
This may have been before he cut his hair
+ChromeWolf haha yea has to be
+ChromeWolf No shit
+Reggie Tito extensions
lmfao
Always wish Lee would play more and test the gear more. Rob just cranks the shit outta the gain to the point that every single guitar and amp he plays sounds pretty much the same. I get a way better idea of what the gear is like when Lee plays.
+Dustin Duczek couldn't agree more!
Damn, I was just going to say the same thing. Every amp and every guitar sounds the exact same when he plays. I assume he plays with things until he gets things the way he wants, but it is terrible at demonstrating what the equipment can do.
I agree but Rob is a very good player and a fun guy to watch and listen to and you can tell he loves what he does.
I agree +tenodogblu and thats part of the problem. He's too good to be just turning up the gain and shredding all the time. I'm sure he'd have even more followers if there was some variety in his playing. Thats why I prefer listening to Rabea playing. Rob is a lot of fun though.
Yeah, Rabea and Cap have some soul to them that Rob seems to have lost along the way somewhere, I agree. Shredding is cool sometimes, but man, does it get old quick.. I wanna hear some original riffs. I know Rob writes stuff every once in awhile right? I mean, he can't be all Dorje and scales..
Everyone expects a $200 amp to sound like a Mesa Dual Rectifier or a 5150, but that's just not going to happen. A cheap 10 inch speaker is going to get muddy with distortion, but this product isn't intended for the discerning tone-hunter with a big budget. Chill people.
Got that shit Right !!
Dude you are comparing amps to speakers here. You are saying: a Rectifier sounds better than a 10 inch speaker. That is like saying that a Mercedes drives better than a garage. A Rectifier should be plugged to a proper cabinet and this Marshall amp can be plugged to a proper cabinet as well because it has speaker output, right?
+ChainsawChristmas Did someone take away your buttplug boy? You said that something with a 10inch speaker can't sound like a Rectifier but there are no speakers in Rectifiers unless you get the Rectoverb combo. All I am saying is that for a good comparison the Marshall should be connected to a proper cabinet. It could sound as great as a Rectifier, who knows?
+Rieni Otten quiet child, adults are speaking.
Wait I misst something, who said 5150's and Boogie rectum friers have cheap 10inch speakers? Just curious.... and following comments
I would like to hear a blind test with the Marshall code 100 against the original amps.. since you probably have quite a few of them in the store..
Brian Mead Brown they should totally do that!!
It would be awesome but Im pretty sure they wont.
They are paid one review at a time. Thats what I think.
they cant chose a real tube amp from a fake Kemper. How you thik they gonna guess a REAL Marshall and the Marshall thats copying a Marshall? lol
I have the Marshall Code 100 Combo. The main reason? Price. I can't afford a valve head. That's why I would love to see/hear a comparison as suggested above.
Chris Davies a comparison why? To hear something you can’t afford be better than the thing you have now?
I got a code 50 a few months ago and i gotta say...i love it. It is a great sounding amp. The app and webpage intergration is so important and i haven't seen any talk about it at all. Yes...you can do everything onboard if you know what your doing but the best way to use this amp is to go online...setup your presets...download a bunch, you have 100 onboard and 100 online. Sounds like to much i know, but you will fill up your list fast. Then crank the amp and the app and you have everything at your fingertips. I have several modeling amps and this one sounds way better than the rest. They are all pretty good and do lots of things but the code50's sound is way better. One more quick tip...You must tilt this amp. I don't know why but it sounds thin if not. Just give it a bit of a tilt backwards..maybe 2 inches and the sound is amazing.
I just ordered a used one off of Amazon for 180, I figured they would not have any used amps laying around so I now have a brand now Code 50 for 190 with tax included. Already found excellent tones. I got my first 100W half stack in the 80's. Speaker upgrade soon.
All that for a couple of hundred bucks?? Guitarists never had it so good. Sounds wicked for the price.......Why compare to tube amps? Stupid. It is what it is, and it has so many features, it blows away the crappy little amps I grew up with.
216trixie I know right, tips and tricks on RUclips as well, we had to figure everything out lol!
My first amp was a Gorilla practice amp with chorus and it was F@#%kin awful and sounded sh1t for around the same price lol 😂 This Marshall is from a different planet in comparison 👍🏻
Got this amp yesterday and I am still working it all out but so far I really like it. Found some good settings to play blues on.
That little smile from Chappers when Lee's voice breaks at 1:32, haha!
Captain! Chappers! PLEASE do a comparison between some of these next gen modelling amps, like the CODE, Spider V and the BOSS Katana. I think i speak for a lot of (mostly new?) players when I say that it would be MUCH appreciated.
Ertz01 advise from a spider owner... dont buy them as a begginer, buy a marshall, spiders dont go well with pedals.
jonathan abreu They don't do good with anything. I had one and I was astonished at how horrible it sounded.
Ertz01 I have to agree. A shootout would be nice.
Katana wins hands down
Ertz01 I had the line 6 spider 5 not a patch on this I have the code 25 far better great for home use
I bought one of these after Rob Chapman had a several hours long love making session with me and my toaster oven, which he ended with a back flip. I had no idea that he was so agile. I was convinced to buy the amp. After which I experienced buyers remorse -- not for the amp, but for a toaster oven I bought which was now shagged beyond repair.
The horror... the horror...
I got this one and I'm really enjoying with this in affordable price.
Actually it has some issues like bluetooth connection problem, changing delay or not nice modulations, but... its tube-boosted drive simulation sounds good.
I think it's great for beginners to have a whole range of amp types. That's how I found out what kind of sound I like. Now I have this POD HD500 with dozens of amps in it and only use the Dr.Z and a Plexi emulation.
Top compliments to whoever does the editing now, it's excellent.
Amazing amplifier, just received it! A good ear is enough to approach any tone you like! It has tones of choices!
...I think the term ´Shaffordable´ would be apt here.
Just bought the CODE 50 from you guys, arrives tomorrow.
Ultimate RUclips drinking game:
1) click on any random video thats in the style of someone talking to a camera.
2) every time someone says "link in the description", take a drink.
3) click on another random video in the style of someone talking to a camera.
4) do step 2.
5) repeat steps 1-3... wait... damn you Brian Mcknight!! Repeat steps one through FOUR.
You will not be conscious after one hour.
+Event Horizon Productions Sounds stupid and fun at the same time LOL
That clean American was surprisingly authentic to a Fender sound.
"Crank the gain, Lee!" - this should be an opening for every video with Chappers&Captain :D
Great amp, really glad that you can do everything on the amp itself without needing a smartphone. The higher end ones sound even greater, and for the price, I'm definitely considering picking one of the larger ones, like the 2x12 up
you havent even watched the video right lol
+Luke Valentino you havent watched the vid right. on the topside you can control everything
+SepSep I dont think he's referring to the control panel, i think he's laughing at the fact that the op said this amp was great. Not 100% but probably.
@@lukee_v How hasn't he watched the video?, quit being a prick
First thing I notice... That's a beautiful ML2!
What the fuck ever happend to the Chapman v?
Working on the prototype :-)
+Rob Chapman if its anything like the ghost fret, I will never buy any other brands again lol
+Rob Chapman I would love one if it only would be more Gibson-ish kinda style
+luketama1 You could rather say "what happend to the Chapman Guitar Pedals" lol
+derloX what the fuck* happend
Preset number 94 without the Wah and with some extra distortion and tweaking sounds like dimebags tone, really love it dont know why people hate this amp
If anyone is watching this old vid in 2024...The CODE 25 is great now, after updates to firmware and software App.
It sounds big and rocks , cleans are great too.
The App is excellent.Just set the volumes low.You CAN use the Cab Emulations with it , or not.
I like them.
I also have other amps including valve Marshalls and Fenders. So I know the CODE 25 is fine now.
Lee, the Marshall MG Carbon Fibre Series amplifiers are programmable; both on the amps themselves, and using the 4-button footswitch. The 30-watt, 50-watt and 100-watt models have a built-in tuner.
I freaking love my Code25.
Safety tip of the day. Ensure you have proper insertion before proceeding to rock.
+Maafa 1619 It happens at (14:35)
That little intro by Chappers is really awesome. Rob, if you ever read this, please use that intro in a song. It's so beautiful
I rally like the bluetooth phone integration with this amp...these are not terribly expensive, so a nice amp to have in your collection
It's digital, and the name is CODE... Who needs more of a reference than that?
+Blaz Pogacnik digital amp...software...programmes...code
I’m too trying to talk myself out of buying the 25. Love the vid.
😀
Owner for 2 years. Sold. Great with headphones. Bad without.
Update the firmware and test again. I love the Code 50.
This sounds like the latest digi-amp that will sell like hotcakes when they finally hit our shores but six months later, will be filling up eBay. I call these presets "two month tone" because inside a big box retailer at relatively low volume, they sound quite amazing the first time you hear 'em but a few weeks later at home, the ear fatigue sets in because the longer you listen the more you notice the missing dynamics of the digital platform at this price point. Eventually the technology you get from the uber-expensive digital rigs like Kemper will work its way down to these affordable Borg boxes but until then, fun enough to fart around with but uninspiring once the novelty wears off. Killer little bugger for those on a budget but a tiny 5-watt bottle rocket Marshall DSL5 will eat this alive.
I've been doing this for years: zoom g1xon into a MG15 dfx
Your hair are back! Amazing!
Looks like your phone is sitting on a solid plate of gold!
I had a Peavey modeling amp that, while it had significant changes when cycling the modes, just had a bunch of genuinely hostile (in the actual bad way) noise in the lower mids. I have an education in electronics, and it's why I always had a fight with resolving ICs vs. actual transistors vs. tubes. I finally got to sit down in a quiet place with a friend that can play really well, and then "got" the tube tone and figured out the inter-harmonic hostility. I know I like the 6505+ and several of the Blackstar models, along with a Randall 667. But I record at home, so I'll just buy an attenuator when I finally buy the amp.
For now, it's just Positive Grid so I can test what I like and get a general feel for the options. Since I work more "in the box" and do field recording, I don't have a normal studio space for an isocube and fixed mic'ing. Yet. ;-)
really neat you can use the app, i'll be picking this amp up today for bedroom practice. very excited to get my hands on a marshall.
Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo
anybody else hear them on Lee's voice?? 12:00
May be outdated, but a review of the Zoom G1Xon would probably cater to a lot of people who are just starting out with pedals/multieffects, and its a great little monster!
Another awesome demo guys! Keep on rockin' \m/ ;)
Really pleased I pre-ordered one of these (from Andertons of course)
Funny how everyone expects a 10 inch speaker to sound full and robust like a 4-12 speaker cab, I mean really how is that supposed to be possible? Hell just mic it into a PA or a big amp and let it blow. lol
Can you guys demo the Fender Bassbreaker Series?
+Alfie Reeves yess, pls do it!
Yes, please.
They do
I really quite like the app design! The amps sound pretty decent as well!
Thank you for making this video I really needed some help and guidance for choosing a amp
wow, i am going to get this, goddang it sounds heavenly it is just crazy how much they sound like the true stuff WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Rob, I didnt know you surfed with aliens
that's one big ass phone, need a backpack to carry that
Heh heh.
thats damn small dude .
Nice Ibanez, love the color scheme.great little amp too.
love that blue tele style chapman think i might buy me one of them
well... at least it is a sound, whatever sound it is
My buddy has had that Blackstar ID modeling head and I have a feeling this is Marshalls response to it...budget friendly and decent tones. Maybe all made at the same factory in China but with different logos? :)
I got this amp just as an impulse buy...its great..the phone app is what sealed it
the code is in a whole new world of performance compared to a mg cfx. god those cfx amps don't deserve to have the Marshall name
Guys, you MUST do a video testing the Marshall Code pedal! Cheers!
Thank's :) The Code 25 is surprisingly very powerfull ! And IMHO even Fender tones sound Marshall :). I like this little amp (but beware of Bluetooth the last firmware update broke it).
hi Rob, love the channel btw.
I have a question you may be able to answer for me.... how does the smallest code amplifier compare to the vox vt20x valvetronix, and given the fact that I am much of a blues than a screaming gain sorta guy, would you recommend the code or the valvetronix?
Keep up the good work :)
Wohoo this video helped me decide to get a code. :D thanks so much, keep it up. :D
got to say I really like the CODE 25 for it's size and sound.... and amazing price! Perhaps I'm a bit old and like the sounds without the weight. I have bought the HELIX from Andertons which is wicked but I do need something really light and versatile.
I Have A DV Mark 3 Ch MULTIAMP and LOVE IT.....BUT,I HAVE GOT TO BUY A 100 Watt Code 2x12 Combo,or Head,..THEY SOUND SOOOO GOOOD !!! THANKS CHAPPERS AND CAPTAIN,Enjoyed the Demo and HOPE Thhey Release These SOON in the USA...I THINK that JUNE Through Septmber are the Expected Dates,...PLEASE HURRY !!!! : ) THANKS MUCH, Your Biggest Fan ACROSSED THE POND ! Bob Malin Glendora,NJCHEERS !
Although I have a Yamaha thr 5 and had a vox pathfinder that had superb SS sound.
+wade wilson I have a THR5 as well, I prefer it to this honestly
I'd like to see Marshall do something more with their low wattage tube amps.
The DSL5 needs a bigger speaker. Same goes for the Class 5 (and possibly built in reverb). The DSL15 could really do with an effects loop.
Besides that, I read a lot of comments saying they think that the DSLs sound crap. I've not heard them in person, so I can't give my opinion there, but I just don't seem to see these comments so often when it comes to stuff like the Blues Junior or the Vox AC15/AC4C1-12.
+Teknical Xtacy I think they did well on the feature set of the DSL5C. I just find 10 inch speakers don't give quite as much low end as I'd like personally.
+Teknical Xtacy Epiphone Dot. I'm not exactly in love with this guitar. When setup to factory specs, there are a couple of places on the neck where it chokes on bends. I've raised the action a little on the treble side. Luckily, I actually like what this does to the tone.
When I have the money I'll be looking to upgrade. I just have too many things that require money be spent on them at the moment.
+Teknical Xtacy Thanks :)
That Jem is so beautiful
It's a shame that the footswitch has to be bought separately. Don't think I'll be swapping my Mustang for one anytime soon though and the Fuse software that comes with the Fender is excellent. Still a top video lads!! :-)
I'm not sure whether amps don't sound good or the recording quality is poor. Sorry
+Kirill Holstov For the price, I'd say they're pretty damn good.
+setra23 for the price there's no reason to get it over a fender mustang. at least the mustang isn't so obviously digital (mustangs are actually pretty decent IMO)
+Kirill Holstov Fairly certain it is the amps. Just sounds like an MG to me, every demo I have heard sounds bad. The VOX AV series is around the same price point, and they blow the CODE out the water, imo.
+Will Lane Productions Yeah, the Vox and for a bit more the Roland Cube are both much better.
aleh baba
Nope. Listened to plenty of demos though.
Will you guys be looking at the new fender Bassbreakers?
I rather like this. Then again, I'm a big Marshall fan...and not just of their tube amps (though those really are amazing). Even the little MG30DFX actually sounds pretty good. And though some don't like it, I'm very fond of the AVT series. The 100 watt actually sounds excellent (though not JCM800 excellent).
Like a couple of others here, I would love to see a CODE vs Amplifi comparison video.
Also how does the CODE sound when played quietly? Can it be played quietly and still get a good tone? (I know heresy to play a Marshall quietly).
My current amp is a 15w 2 channel combo that sounds like crap until the volume is at least 1/3 of the way up and by then it is just too loud to play in the house when the my family or neighbours are home. The gain channel is even louder, LOL.
I would like to get an amp that is self contained (combo), lots of different tones and effects to play with, lowish cost, can play well at low volume to practice, but can be cranked to "screw the neighbours" sound levels when the need arises.
+cmdrsocks It's a modeling amp, it makes no difference how loud you play, you will have the same exact sound, probably gets worse, like most other modeling amps, if you play really loud
Thanks
+cmdrsocks The Amplifi Kicks its ass Code only has one speaker.
+cmdrsocks the smallest bass breaker is the latest little amp that I've been pining over. Bassman esque cleans and blues breaker esque dirty is my form of heaven!
+cmdrsocks What amp is it?
I just love ur videos guys!
Amazing how a few more years later after JMD, they make this. The price is really amazing for the 2x12 combo compared to my JMD102. I'd love to take my amp to a shop and compare the two. The CODE seems to have lost the real tube power section in the JMD series, but, gained effects, user-interface and amp variation.
Stick with the JMD, this is a toy by comparison. But if you really must, you could run the code 100 head's pre-amp from the FX send into the JMD's FX return to add a quality valve power amp to the the code head. Then again you could just buy any modelling pedal (and there's a ton out there) and bypass your JMD pre-amp altogether. But why stick with a hybrid? Just plug a valve pre-amp like the Laney Ironheart IRT-PULSE into your JMD return loop to upgrade your JMD into a full valve amp! RESULT! :)
This is a combo??? How did they get 2 12 inch speakers in a 17 inch wide cabinet??
Captain and Chappers need to swap hairstyles for a video.
Would be cool to compare other "smart" amps to this. I was looking at that line 6 amplifi thing, price is comparable, i wonder if sound is
Sort of not relevant to the video, but i wanted to give u a heads up cpn. Diming an amp means putting the controlls on 10 not jumping the channels. I heard you talk about this in the Joe Bonamassa video and i just wanted to tell you :)
How do I plug my phone into this, I pulled the wire from the wall jack but I can't find a connector? ;)
bluetooth
The ultimate 'Sound like' Amp
+Craig Harris How to sound like shit maybe loljk... kinda...
Would love a video comparing amp modeling to the actual Marshall amp being emulated
Nice to see the gold top. Always thought it looked like one of the nicest (except for the off centre dots) Chap guitars but it never seems to get much love!
Yup ... useful ... and fun ... thanks a lot!
Amp sounds way too damn muddy, other than that, pretty spot on
It has tone knobs.
It has tone knobs.
The bass sounds funny on every review of this amp. Like it makes the speaker break up funny.
+tvelt17 I've noticed the same thing. I've watched every vid I can find on this amp and all of them sound like that. Im waiting to try this amp out myself because I think I want it but if it does actually break up like that its a deal breaker.
Wait a minute - is that a calculator pop up at 8:14? Can this thing ALSO calculate a decent tip? Awesome.
I'm waiting for the 100 watt head so the cab sims can be turned off and used with a real guitar cab & speakers. This is where the rubber meets the road for me personally with digital modeling. Much more realistic in sonic timber. Less distant, muddy, hollow valley sounding.
Dat cheeky editing at 15:11
God I love that ML-2!
1:34 Chappers laughs at Caps voice crack
Holy Christ I will never get used to the new intro.
Lol! At 1:11 they used the 1 on the coin. Dats smurt!!11!11!!
if rob chapman made a guitar that looked like the Gibson Firebird, I would buy one right now
12:08 Neat little edit there Rory
Libraries be so old we forgot that people don't rent books, they borrow...
God this is so tempting... Chappers, would you say the 100 watt head is worth it if I was going to be gigging? Obviously it's a lot cheaper than full valve heads but it sounds fantastic. Does it compare to something like an orange head?
I would take an orange crush over this thing any day or if you're looking for something more pantera gain level check out randall same price and a ridiculous amount of gain which sounds pretty good.
