One of the things my guitar teacher mentioned to me when learning is just after a single chord I tested it through out the fretboard. I ended up just making simple riffs off a G-Chord and used it for some cool Rhythm sections and Harmonies. Sometimes sticking to simplicity just works.
Another good example for those looking for others, though perhaps drifting more into emopunk, would be the bridge of 'This Photograph is Proof (I Know You Know)' by Taking Back Sunday off the album 'Where You Want To Be' (2004). Fred Mascherino and Eddie Reyes play octave leads, Eddie starting on E and Fred on A, and move in steps across the scale toward one another before ending where the other guitar part began. Matt Madiro's bass part, meanwhile, roots the two leads first in a B, then a G before all three guitars suddenly crash down into a low E.
...if you would've added the bass, my GOD you would've not only emphasized the importance of harmony, but also shown how important bass truly is! Still a great video!
Bro thank you for all you do. You help with my writer's block and I appreciate all your videos. I have some of your PDFs downloaded and it's totally helping me come up with some ideas. I'm a huge Motion City Soundtrack and Manchester orchestra fan. Could you do a video about one of those two bands? That would be so sick.
That's great to hear! I think I did something on them - or at least that style of chiptune-enthused pop punk awhile ago. But I'll probably do something in the future on that too!
For my money, Thin Lizzy and Judas Priest are the kings of that era. Phil and Rob were untouchable leading men and their harmonizing guitar leads are still to this day some of the best yo ever be recorded.
I hate to say it cause i’m not into the genre except for Ben’s songs’s. But those pop punk guitarists are the masters of open string harmony. EVH did it a lot in his riffs, but most guys don’t realize it. I suppose a lot of the guitar stuff comes from the math rock scene that came before it. Very similar.
It's really just basic harmony, in the same way a vocalist uses 3rds, 5ths, 7ths, etc., to harmonise with a lead melody. I think experimenting with those intervals is the key to coming up with some cool ideas, so I'll always advocate using your ear over relying solely on theory. However, if you want a few places to start, try something like using a 5th for each note in your lead melody and go from there. Hope that helps!
There's some acoustic and electric guitar playing rhythm underneath, and then some low octaves come in a bit later on when the chord progression goes to the minor.
I mean, not really. They have their roots in emo, which is an offshoot of punk, so it all comes from the same place. Though if you look at the title, you'll quite clearly see the word 'pop' next to it 😀
#1: play something cool, play it again rinse and repeat oh, and the riff he's doubling is BORING and sits like ROCK and hurts my feelings listen to AMYL and The Sniffers...they got some riffs that'll wake you up
Onya for giving Amy and the lads a shout out!! Saw em at a backyard party yrs back... And thought.. these buggas ain't bad!! Never dreamt they'd grow into this great monster!!!
Lol no, the song and part are so good! Hearing it in isolation doesn't really do it justice, it was just for demonstration purposes. You really need the harmonic context of everything playing around it, so I'd recommend listening to the original song if you haven't already 😄
Eh, depends on the band. Like with any genre there's both good and bad. Also if it's not your thing, you can always just not click on videos that's specifically about those things you already inherently dislike.
"And your bird can sing" has to be the prime example of this
Yeah!!!
The riff at the beginning of this sure was great
Thanks! It's just a thing I wrote for an older video that I now use as a "score", if you will.
It sounds a little bit like Protection by Movements and I love that

Jimmy eat world are the masterclass ❤️
One of my favourite examples of this is the opening to The Trooper by Iron Maiden playing roughly the same parts just two frets
Sum 41 was pretty good at doing these as well. That riff always reminded me of something they would write as well.

I'm from Ireland and jimmy eat world are my favourite bands
Everlong has that in the bridge too!
sounds like one guitar was on the neck pickup and the other on the bridge, which helps create a bit of thickness to it as well.
Best part of that song

J.E.W. is also one of the best bands ever, def know what they're doing brah.
IMHO in the 70s Thin Lizzy popularised this double guitar style
For my money, Thin Lizzy and Judas Priest are the kings of that era. Phil and Rob were untouchable leading men and their harmonizing guitar leads are still to this day some of the best yo ever be recorded.

More of a modern poppunk band, but Rozwell Kid are masters of harmony - I'd highly recommend giving them a listen

If you like guitar harmonies, you should check out Baroness and Anciients
Pretty cool Bateman 😎

The reason artists fiddle around with guitar lines a lot is due to them being so uninspired in the first place.
