Coleman Camp Oven - Does it really work?

- The little Coleman Camp Oven did a surprisingly great job on our initial test. It packs down into a small size and is very easy to setup. We will be on the lookout for some kind of soft carry bag/sleeve to store the oven in. If you know of any good options let us know!

I have used my oven for over 23 years, They bake great. I even make loaf bread 🍞 in mine. Baked perfect every time on my Coleman stove.
I'm a bread baker, too. Lots, almost every day with a home oven or bread machine. For camping I will definitely consider this product.
these ovens were originally designed to work with coleman suitcase stoves that burned coleman fuel/white gas so weight really wasn't an issue... they figured if you were ok with the weight of the 20 pound stove the 7 pound oven wouldn't bother you. the design has been around since the late 50's, the early ones were black not silver and tended to rust easily, the silver ones are made of aluminized steel which does not rust as easily and should last a long time.
Very cool. Thank you for the info!
thankyou for sharing
Mine is the black one with copper door. Fun fact; on the inside theres a stamp that says 'dont use with leaded fuel' ...Thats how you know its OLD OLD haha
Exactly they are not intended for backpacking
I remember those old steel or aluminized ovens when I was in cubs , scouts and eagles in the late 70’s/early 80’s.
I recently bought the 100% aluminum model
One of the best tests I have ever seen. It is all about the product not about the person doing the demonstration or about how they live or where they've been or what are their things that don't apply to the product demonstration. It efficiently shows the setup, demonstrates the time it takes to heat, and shows the outcome of a specific food. Very efficient use of my time to watch this. Thank you. You should do a demonstration to show others how to do this efficiently like you do.
Thank you 😊
I put a square cast iron griddle in the bottom for better heat retention. You have to constantly check and monitor, so the griddle keeps the temp more consistent. I also put Pizza pans directly onto the griddle for a super crispy crust.
I also cover the top and sides with foil so the heat doesn't leak out all the holes. The oven is small, and if you don't keep the heat in the bottom of everything burns before the top cooks.
I hang an oven thermometer inside because the front thermometer isn't all that accurate.
I use this as my primary oven, and it can do almost anything you need once you get the hang of it.
Those are great tips! Thank you!
Cheers for the info.
Hi Fish,
Can you tell me the name of the griddle you use? I have been trying to find one that fits!
Thanks!
Thankyou very much. Really useful info!
Great review, very helpful, thanks!
I use a small pizza stone in the bottom of my stove. It helps regulate the heat. I love it!
Great idea!
Yes, a stone or a porous (unfinished) clay tile like Mexican tile, also you can fold a COTTON towel over the top and sides to help hold in and regulate the heat. I often camp in cold windy weather and those 2 things ad up to make a big difference.
WOULD YOU PUT IT INSIDE THE OVEN?
@@heribertoramos7739 Yes, you put the tile inside on the bottom. It must be a little smaller than the inside dimensions so the heat can also go around the stone into the oven space. If you are doing a pizza, I would do it on a pan at the middle height, the stone is mainly for heat regulation. maybe putting the stone on the middle rack would let you cook a pizza on it but I have never tried it.
I've had mine 24 yrs. Just ordered a pizza stone for it. Can bake a cake, pie, bread, pizza, cookies, rolls,
meat, fish in the oven. Makes baking outside doable.
We have heard quite a few people say the pizza stone helps. Was it hard to find a small one to fit the oven?
@@ExploreTrekAdventure On a Amazon review of this oven the reviewer used a Waykea 10 x 10.4" pizza stone. Picture showed it fit the oven very well.
Did you place the pizza stone at very bottom of the oven to regulate an even temperature or did you place the pizza stone on the metal adjustable shelf and then place the pan directly on top the pizza stone?
Was my question confusing?
@@cajuncookone : Normally I place the stone in the very bottom of the oven to help regular an even temperature. For regular cooking, I bake in a baking dish which is positioned on the rack itself. However, for baking a pizza I place the stone on the adjustable rack. There are three sets of holes for adjusting your rack. Mine is set in the 2nd set of holes (center). For pizza, I place the pizza on the stone (depending on the thickness of the crust). For a thin crust I place a bit of aluminum foil on the stone so that the crust bottom does not cook too fast and burn. For a thicker crust I place the slice(s) directly on the stone. Hope that answers your question.
@@HJKelley47 Thank you kindly :)
I bought one of these while vacationing in a van. Works perfectly. I have a propane oven/stove combo now, however I am not getting rid of this one! It'll cook a pizza real good. Much recommend!
thank you for making this video. We just did our first camping trip and took this oven with us. I felt like an expert after watching your video.
🤓
Good job showing the oven. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the feedback and glad you liked it. 😄
I just got one of these and I'm looking forward to using it on our next camping trip.
I have been sticking to Coleman and Stanley products for my camping equipment as that there very well made for what I can afford.
Thanks for the video!!
Coleman makes some great camp items. Have fun with your new oven!
Me too. I've been collecting and using Coleman and STANLEY camping products for decades. Perfect for Car/Van camping gear and their smaller items are great for hiking, kayaking, fishing trips, etc., or just a quick brew-up for day outings.
Thank you for your review. I will buy this oven after seeing your well done presentation!
Glad it was helpful.
Thanks for your video. I bought one of these for our wood stove. So far, so good!
😀
Thankyou for testing this item,sold!!
What a fun and great review!! Cheers!
Thank you for the feedback! 😀
Might need this. Looks like it works pretty good.
Love your t-shirt and the Trader Joes plantbased rolls!!
adorabile il tuo sorriso all'inizio del video 😊
Nice I love that Smile too.
😀
Excellent video! Thank you very much! I am buying this oven, it is absolutely great! Cheers :)
Thank you for the feedback and enjoy the oven. 😀
Very cool oven ! Haven't seen that one before.
We were surprised how well it worked! 🙂
That looks delicious 😋 😊 I hoped you saved some for Snowball!🙏😘👍🤤😉
I made a oven using a metal bread bin, covered it with oven insulation, the stove i use is Turm sports, I have one of these as well, , but the older one, no temp thing on it,
I was searching for reviews on this folding camping oven and then saw your Sea Shepherd tshirt! Love it!! 💚🥹🌱 Nice review too. How has the oven held up for you on your adventures?
So far so good. 🐬😍
Cool video, I didn’t even know the cinnamon rolls from trader Joe’s are plant-based, that’s awesome 💕
The cinnamon rolls are soooo good. Love Trader Joes. 😍
I guess I don't understand are there any cinnamon rolls that are not plant based Thanks for your help Simon
When it comes down to it, Cows are plant based.
@@ExploreTrekAdventure Yah come to think of it, every cinnamon roll ive made or eaten in the last half century was 'plant based'
That's Snowball's box now ❤
🐱📦😀
Nice oven.. Hope I can get 1 of those.. KS
Ive got the original made in 1910 by valour put a valour heater or the blue flame burner under it made back then also , iv cooked some great meals also roasts in it , thats what they used on the go or didnt have a wood oven in the house the idea still kicking around today 😊 and folding now 👍never tried it on over the barby gas burner will do one day and yep keep the flame low these things get bloody hot inside , and it cooked the roast around the same time as my house oven dos
Thank you.
Your welcome!
Your unboxing and demo looks like it worked great. Do you still use it, like it 2 Years on? What sleeve / carry case did you find for carrying it and storing it? I'm guessing a soft computer bag might work and have extra pockets for any add-ons you need like oven mitts or hot pads.
We have been storing it in the original box which has definitely degraded over time. Having a thick soft carry bag would be a great idea.
Was it hard to get the temperature adjusted to where you needed it? Thanks for the review. God bless and stay safe.
The temperature definitely fluctuates a bunch especially when you open the door to check on things. Not too bad if you keep an eye on it. 😀
I can't put mine together that fast. I noticed that the thermometer is off by about 25deg to hot. I also put a sheet of foil around mine to keep the heat in a little better. Have made pies, potatoes, biscuits, cinnamon buns. Going to try a small roast next.
In our last video we made Apple crisp while we were camping. It seemed like our gauge was reading a bit on the cool side. Still turned out great. Sounds like you have made some tasty things in your oven.
I haven't used my huge oven at home for 20 yrs. Everything is done on the stove top or in a sandwich press. Casseroles, sausages, pizzas, etc. But this would be cheap enough to use at home. I do miss cooking roast veges.
I'd like to have seen the colman cooker used.
Slick and affordable
This is interesting to see. I've a few years experience of burning stuff in a homemade version, that I copied from one I'd seen with Andy Capps Comandos. Now though, it looks like I can just go out and buy one....
LOL, I've been looking at ways of rigging up a DIY. Sometimes cheaper may not save in the long run.
It would be good if they could put a little glass window on the side of the oven like they do with tent stoves so you could watch your food baking instead of having to open the door and allowing the heat to escape just because you want to check on them.
That would be a nice feature. Since the oven is fairly small in size it does heat back up quickly.
Thankyou
😊
What about a fire blanket over the top ? Would that be safe?
Would a baking tray on the base work as a better heat distributor?
We have seen people make fireproof covers for them to help regulate the heat (especially in windy conditions)
Hey thanks for sharing the video! Never seen one of these before...looks like it works great 👍
The initial test worked way better than we thought it would. Excited to do more with it this summer.
@@ExploreTrekAdventure do you think something like a coleman propane burner/stove would heat it up?
I would think so. It traps the heat really well.
@@ExploreTrekAdventure perfect, thanks for the info!
Buying one
😀👍🏻
I think I shall as well.
I've been looking for an old pizza stone to cut to fit the bottom of the oven at a thrift store. To try to even out the heat more. Or maybe even fire brick would work? I'm going to have to try this on my kitchen stove!!! lol
You don’t have to worry about the wind cooling the oven when your in your kitchen. 🤣 let us know if you find a good solution for the pizza stone.
A fire brick or two is a great idea. Thanks.
Way back in the 1970s I put one on a hibachi and used it as a smoker.
😀
Great review, was wondering how I was going to cook my biscuits at the camp sight and love the Sea Shepherds T,
Thank You 😄
Would it work well with chunks of fresh snapper and tuna while on the boat using a duel fuel stove?
Not sure duel fuel matters as long as it can maintain a steady temperature.
Or you could spring for the Camp King (or Moor or something like that) oven (bout $250 US on Amazon) but it looks too heavy & bulky.
Is this only supposed to be used on top of a gas camp stove in a camper or on top a Colman gas stove Or are their other methods of heating it.
They are designed to sit above a gas burner but any heat source would probably work.
Hello ! .....i'm Glad You Show IT ! ..i Knew That Product ! .But One Good Thing You Showm...How We Have To Open & FIX IT ! .👍 That 's Good To Cook Some Pastry in IT Mmm 🤪 / Chiken & also Other Things ! .👍 ..Very Good For Every Where ! ..Thank You So Much ! .🤩🥰💞💞 ..
😄
I have been using these for decades, without something in the bottom to even out the heat and an insulated wrap over the outside they are a horrible way to try to bake; take forever to heat up, waste a tremendous amount of fuel, and cook very unevenly. A slight breeze can increase the heating and cooking time by double.
I found a 9 1/2 inch silicone round baking pan do you think that would fit in there ??? 🧐
You have to tilt the pan in order to get it through the door but once inside it fits fine.
@@ExploreTrekAdventure I just actually ordered the oven tonight from Amazon they finally got them back in stock very hard to find I also bought a silicone round pan I think that will be easy cleanup, now I just have to get my fiancé to start camping I already bought two campers that sat in the driveway never used sold them this time around I bought a nice tent I’ll start out slow
got one, not that modal, an older, on, may I susjest you make a fire proof , insulator cover for it, it helps to keep the heat in, I went down to me local cooker shop, explained to them wot I was after, then next old oven they got, they kindly ripped out the stuff for me, made a nice cover for it
A cover is a great idea.
How do you keep the temperature from continually rising? Do you shut the burners off once it reaches the desired temp, and it retains the heat?
The oven isn’t very efficient at holding heat since it is lightweight metal. This means the burner needs to stay on at a fairly high level to hold a high heat.
@@ExploreTrekAdventure So these would be a lot more economical with the white gas model. Which I've always preferred. And the 1 lb propane cylinders are getting scarse for some reason.
@@mrequi1 Because I am buying them all up! Beware to the unprepared!!!
@@jonothandoeser I usually use the big tanks w an adapter but can fill the small ones from them if needsd
Yeas I have the 30 lbs. cylinder with adapter as well. Just in case.
What size dish was that you used for the cooking?
Pyrex 8” square baking dish.
Anyone know how tall the oven is when it is folded down? Trying to figure out if it will fit in the space we have above the stove.
Stored in box it is 3" x 13" x 12.5". Just by itself folded down it is approximately 2.25" x 12" x 12.25".
@@ExploreTrekAdventure Thank you so much!
How long does the oven take to cool down enough to pack it up?
It is a very lightweight material and cools quickly.
Is it available in the USA ?
Yes!
They've sold em here in the US since the 1950s
Will it fit a 10" inch pizza 🍕 bake pan!.
I don’t think so, but if it did you would have to really angle the pan to get in the opening.
I've wanted one of these for quite a while. I could use 2 actually. They seem to be a bit overpriced though. I'm surprised some other makers haven't made their own version of these.
Yes it would be nice if they were a bit cheaper but they do work quite well.
Got mine in a box at a garage sale for $6. I did buy one originally at $45 because every time I checked the price kept getting higher.
AH ! ...MY BUNNY ..NAME .SNOW❄️ BALL TOO ! 🤩🥰💞💞 😁😁 The Same As Your CAT 😻 ...
I bought one of these for power outages lol. I have an eco zoom incase the gas goes out, but I have a gas stove. If you put a small pizza stone in the bottom it keeps heat better. I don't have one of those fire blankets yet though.
They work OK but they leak a lot of heat and your better off making a cover from a fire blanket, retains the heat well, cooks you food more evenly
I was so afraid you weren’t going to glaze those rolls 😬😅
😬
If it fits, it sits. 😺
So I guess it would go on a campfire when camping?✌
You put the oven over one of the burners on your camp stove. 😀

😂
plant based cinnamon rolls. who'd have thought?
I know right! 😉 Most brands you find at the store have whey or some milk based ingredient hidden in there.
Note: DONT TRY THIS ON AN ELECTRIC RANGE!
The results could be shocking!
*SnowBall says "I Fit... I Sit" >^..^
🐱📦😂
If it was half inche bigger my jacks pizza would fit
Some edges on these are poorly finished, razor sharp! Use a carborundum stone to deburr the sharp edges, youll save your skin, literally.
Great idea
Ok call me stupid but aren't all cinnamon rolls plant based?
Most brands have eggs, milk or whey to their ingredients.
Not the good ones. Lol. Butter and lard are not plant based!
@@rickw4160 and who would've guessed butter and lard would turn out to be a much healthier alternative to the hydrogenated fats we've been consuming forever.
These work a lot better if you put a square pizza stone in the bottom to prevent burning. Although I own one of these, I can't claim to have used it much. Probably one more rather unnecessary 'toy' for camping.
Plant based ? 😮
Isn't flour from wheat, a plant ?
You’re right, wheat is from a plant. A lot of cinnamon rolls have dairy in them, these do not. 🙂
Too bad they have veg oil PUFA fats in them instead of good old butter...its stearic acid in the dairy fat that protects us from the super-fattening effects of plant oils esp those in grains. Ghee and butter have worked for humans for thousands of years...veg oils are a new thing and along with their incfeased use one sees increased diabetes, cancer, heart disease, obesity...the graphs of incidence over time are identical to the graph of use of veg oils over time. Identical. The data is out there for anyone who cares to look for it. FireInABottle yt chan dives deep into the biology of it all.
