  • An Omnia Oven cooking review seemed to be in order now that we've used it several times while camping for everything from cinnamon rolls to cornbread to a tortellini pasta dish. Cooking in our Class B RV (a 2008 Roadtrek 190 Popular 4x4) has been with our gas stove, camping stove, microwave, and InstantPot. But as Jessi says in this video, "Sometimes, you just need an oven." So we purchased an Omnia.
    We bought our Omnia on Amazon: amzn.to/3h1ceYa
    If you're interested in the Facebook group Jessi mentions, that can be found here: / 143800689351894

    If you'd like to help us out with the cost of maintaining our website, running our RUclips channel, and other expenses we encounter to produce content, buy us a cup of coffee (for Ari) or tea (for Jessi). We appreciate you!

    Hi from Sweden! (Omnias origin country btw) I just bought an Omnia today and I am excited to use it in my van. Thanks for the inspiration! You have convinced me that I do need to get the silicone inserts too, looks so practical.

      Hello from Florida (currently)! We're excited for you to try all the ways you can bake with the Omnia. And, yes, the silicone liners have been great. Keep one for savory and one for sweet dishes, too, so you don't have to worry about flavors crossing over. We have found they work well and clean up easily. Thanks for watching and commenting - safe travels to you!

      Hi from the Netherlands!
      I would just like to point out that if you ever doubt if something is made by our Swedish cousins, name all the Swedish brands you know: Omnia, Trianga, IKEA, Mora, etc
      They must have laws about how to name a company 🤪
      (No, let's not talk about Light My Fire)

    I use a IBILI oven, basically the same thing but slightly larger and taller. It does not come with silicone inserts nor do they make them for the IBILI but the omnia silicone inserts can be used since they kind of fit.
    I opted to get myself a set of four semi circular silicone inserts from another brand which allow me to cook two types of dishes in one go. As you may know, these types of ovens though compact produce rather large portion sizes for a van dwelling team of two so being able to make smaller portions is kind of nice to be able to.
    I build my own van a couple of years back and apart from this pan I use several (not so common) cooking ware. For starters I cook on ethanol since I do not like gas and had a lot of trouble getting propane refills or swaps happening while in another country (which Europe has a lot as you may imagine) the second thing I use quite a bit is a home made heat retention cooking device called the wonder oven (youtube knows about those, various videos on how to make and use one).
    The wonder oven lets you heat up a dish and leave it cooking while no fuel is used.
    It is known the wonder oven is capable of cooking dishes like stews and even breads with about 10-15% of the fuel needed for a regular stewing process. And it is safe to use. You don't need to baby your cooking procedure. You could prepare the dish, heat it up on the stove, place it in the wonder oven and go for a 4 hour hike, an afternoon at the beach or little boat trip if you wanted to... Your dish would be ready as you come back. No worries if the pet has tumbled the pot, if the van burned down of if the propane has run out at some point....
    I have used this type of cookers for many years and generally I am not able to pull out the heated pan without the use of mittens or the like, even after 6-8 hours... the heat is retained very very well and allows for those dishes which normally need many hours of simmering and keeping an eye on.
    The third device which has become a staple of my cooking is a pressure cooker. How versatile a device those are... You can obviously do all kinds of cooking with them but what many people do not realise, a good dialed in pressure cooker can be used to can foods as well. Not that I do much canning while in the van but every now and then I come across a deal at a grocery store I just can't pass up and the only way to process the food is to can it.

    This is great! Thanks for sharing. Will it work on an electric stove top? Or is it exclusive for burner stoves?

    • @Trekers
      @Trekers  3 года назад +1

      The Omnia is designed for a flame burner. We have heard of people using it on electric, but it also depends on what type of burner (coil, flat, glass, etc.) because it can effect baking times and controlling the temperature sounds trickier. It does not work on induction since its not magnetic. We really like its performance on our camp stove and we would recommend using it with a flame burner. Let us know if you have any more questions. Hi guys, for loads of cooking options my best advice especially if you have the electricity to do it with would be a decent toaster oven or air fryer I have not used a microwave in years as I found the change of texture unpleasent the Breville smart oven USA Version is one example of a lot of room to bake with... let me know what you think.

    • @Trekers
      @Trekers  2 года назад

      Thanks, we recently purchased an air fryer and like it so far. But the Omnia is still a great go-to when boondocking.

    • @redknight3439
      @redknight3439 2 года назад

      @@Trekers Thank you for the reply, do use whats most convenient, by all means, I am currently staying where I dont have a house oven so all I have is a small portable toaster oven and I bake with it, do roasts with it and anything else you care to think of. The Breville smart oven I bought, supposedly has air fry function on it but by no stretch is it a true air fryer and something to note if you ever wanted to get two in one, like I tried...
      The difference between a dedicated air fryer vs a toaster with air fry function is night and day.

    Do you have an update, now that it has been about 2 years since you posted this video? Do you still use it frequently and do
    you still love it? I had been wondering about this oven. So far, I've only heard really good things about it. I imagine an egg bake would work really well in this too.

    • @Trekers
      @Trekers  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching and for reaching out!
      We continue to use and love the Omnia oven. It might not be our most-used cooking appliance but it definitely gets used often.
      It often depends on if we're boondocking with only a propane grill (more use) or have electricity (then the Instant Pot or microwave might get more use). But it's perfect when we want baked goods (muffins, cornbread, biscuits), or things like baked nachos, quiche, calzones, casseroles, fries, or to heat up leftovers.
      We also do a lot of "toss what's in the fridge with some tube biscuits or tortillas and bake till golden" type meals.
      One thing you have to watch for is wind that blows the grill flame around underneath, which causes uneven heat and longer cooking times. We bought a metal windscreen that wraps around our grill and that has made a big difference to be able to use it under most weather conditions.
      Hope that helps, we really do love it!!
      -Jessi

    Does the rack to keep things off the bottom work with the silicone liners?

    • @Trekers
      @Trekers  3 года назад

      Yes, the rack gives you a nice air pocket underneath the food to, for example, avoid burning the bottom of cinnamon rolls or a cake while still having them in the oven long enough to bake fully. Hope that make sense. Let us know if you have any more questions. And thanks for watching!

    I'm sure that Mr. Holmes appreciates the plug for Jiffy Mix. The oven look interesting but it doesn't look like it browned very well with the rack. Is that the nature of the oven or is that a result of using the rack? Keep the good stuff coming.

      :) I’m all in for supporting local businesses! I was fortunate to hear Howdy speak at a luncheon once, nice guy. And we all got Jiffy Cookbooks. Good question on the browning. Jiffy cornbread doesn’t usually brown to begin with, it’s usually pretty golden yellow. But I have a feeling it might be partly the oven too. I haven’t done enough “baking” in it to really tell yet. The bottom of the cinnamon rolls burned when I didn’t use the trivet, so there must be a happy medium. Stay tuned for more details later after I’ve experimented more. - Jessi

      I am willing to try the cinammon rolls again -- ya know, to continue experimenting for everyone's benefit. 😄 -Ari

    Where do you get your recipes?

    • @Trekers
      @Trekers  7 месяцев назад

      There are Omnia Oven cookbooks available. Jessi also joined an Omnia Oven Facebook group where people swap ideas. But many times, it's Jessi working from a standard recipe and then adapting it to the size and shape of the Omnia. It functions just like an oven in many ways. -Ari

    Have you tried to cook rice in this oven?

      The brand of our camp stove is Outbound. We have been very pleased with its power and size (both open for use and closed for storage.) We purchased it at Amazon: amzn.to/39SEp6P

    How do you regulate the temperature? I've looked at this system and would love to get one.

    • @Trekers
      @Trekers  3 года назад

      Temperature is controlled by how high your gas flame is on your stove. If cooking outside, we have found that if wind pulls the flame away from the middle of the oven it seriously affects how well it works. So we're working on better ways to screen the wind when necessary. Overall though, we really like this system.

      You could get a BBQ thermometer in there. You might need to make one of the holes in the lid bigger to make it fit. But that way you can check the temperature better.

      @@jannekje7 That's a good idea. We know several people who have made this modification. We've thought about it but haven't bothered to get around to it yet. 😄

    Looks really interesting, be good to link the RUclipsr you mentioned you stole the recipe from too.

      Thanks for watching and commenting! The recipe we copied was from Chad over at Living the Van Life (on RUclips and Instagram). He does a lot of great cooking over the fire with his cast iron pots.

    Can this be used on an Induction Oven too??

    • @Trekers
      @Trekers  4 года назад +1

      No, unfortunately, this will not work on an induction cooktop. Omnia says it won't even work with an induction interface disc.

      Trekers: ok thank you!! Daughter, hubby and their 2yr old daughter are building a ProMaster 3500 159” extended...I was trying to talk them away from having to use propane and just go with induction, (safer/w/2yr old)

    The word is "SILICONE" (CIL-IK-ONE) not "SILICON" (CIL-IK-ON)!

      Yeah, Jessi tends to use those two interchangeably even though they're not. I didn't notice it until after we shot the video, probably because I'm used to it and my brain auto-corrected. Thanks for watching! -Ari

    Oven? do a whole chicken in it then come back, Lets be generous 'Ovenette'. As for the cost for this flimsy ' recycled coke can' item.? $100 upwards AND its made in China.. C'mon... Dutch oven with a trivet, been around for centuries and WORKS and LASTS... Reinventing the wheel or what? Over Priced Rubbish IMO.. Hey but you do you Stay Healthy.

      We have found the Omnia to be well-made and it serves our needs without the added weight of cast iron, which is something we need to consider in our rig with everything else we carry. We have often considered going with a dutch oven and we may some day. But for now, the Omnia is working well. Thanks for watching!

      Its made in SWEDEN not China. It costs well under 100 dollars . And you would obviously cut up a chicken to cook it in this oven. Why not check your facts before writing assinine comments.
