    The two hunters said the craft was rectangular in form, about the size of a utility shed. They saw a vaguely huminoid figure, ( it was too dark to see details ) then turned and ran to their truck, and drove to the police station. They both agree the craft was silent except for a whispery rustling noise, and the smell of burned wood from its landing was still very noticable.

      @@ricktalbott9611 I think most places have something comparable to haggis and that sounds like a contender. Haggis is traditionally from sheep but adding beef suet and using ox bungs to cook it in is very common now. The pig version sounds awesome. 👍

    So, that's what haggis is, tatties, and neepss are. Learned something new, this vid. By the way, the reason lungs from beef, and pork are illegal, state-side, is the potential for exposure to TB. I'm not sure if lung from goat is also illegal, or not. Goats are immune to TB, or at least highly resistant to it. I think I'd have used a cot to get up off the ground, but you seemed to do just fine, anyway. Another way to improve insulation would be to setup an inner layer of foil blankets, about an inch or two from the outer layer. This traps a layer of air in between, and that has R value. The additional blanket layer adds yet another R value. Thanks for the video. :)

  • @gen81465
    @gen81465 9 месяцев назад +14

    Quoting Wikipedia, "In 1971 it became illegal to import haggis into the US from the UK due to a ban on food containing sheep lung, which constitutes 10-15% of the traditional recipe. The ban encompasses all lungs, as fluids such as stomach acid and phlegm may enter the lung during slaughter." There are variations on haggis that can be imported, but personally, I can make meatloaf taste the same, if properly spiced.

    Seeing that post hole digger brought back memories of my youth while living on our family farm in Southwestern Pennsylvania, USA. (I live in the UK now, since May 6, 2003) I became familiar with the use of it when I was as young as 12 when my Dad (❤️ R.I.P.) decided to install electrified fencing around our 50 hectares to keep the cattle from escaping. It was hard work using that post hole digger which left my hands with callouses but after seeing the last fence post go in I felt elated and from that day on had a sense of adult responsibility which made me feel more mature about myself. 👍🙂

    I think you should isolate the bottom zone. Thus, the heat generated inside would be reflected from the blankets and warm you much better. But I think you couldn't make a comfortable camp because of the cold coming from outside because you didn't insulate the bottom well. It was still a good adventure, I hope you enjoy it a lot. 👍

    Perhaps the best feature of the shelter was the way it gave you new ways to film light. You also captured some very sculptural wood and fungus. It would have taken more 'Neck Oil' for me to slide that haggis down my gullet.😉 I have been speculating on ways to 'improve' the shelter design. One way might be to de-stub some poles and wrap some part of the emergency panels around them to secure a base along most of the (uneven) ground. A raised bed would get you off the ground and out of the draft. Making a smaller shelter would be on my agenda! One of the useful parts about videos like yours is how they get the minds of viewers working in reaction to your experiences.

    I know it's a test, but the cardboard shelter, with the tarp over top and these on the interior walls and roof would probably be very comfortable.
    I was at a "drive in" movie with my son at his elementary school, they would show movies on the basketball courts outside during the evening on a inflatable screen. The families would sit in camping chairs and the kids could make cars out of cardboard boxes.
    Along with my son, his mom and her fiance were there. Our son was cold so I got an emergency blanket out of my trunk. She asked me why I was wrapping him up like a burrito. Lol

    I like plastic wrap shelters and 'space blanket' wrap shelters. Those 'space blankets' were originally a NASA space program product along with Tang and anti-gravity ink pens. The original 'space blankets' were silver toned on one side and gold toned on the other side.
    Last time I was in the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum gift shop, the 'dpace blankets' sold for about $8 US each. They were designed to be the minimal barrier that would keep body heat in to protect a person. To achieve that purpise though, air flow has to be kept minimal. Those needed to pretty much touch the ground to keep the heat indide the structure.
    I understand that you wanted enough air flow to keep ocygen in the structure while the fure eas burning, so you could breathe.
    Enjoyed your vid.

    Do you think the shelter would've been warmer in the morning if the gap at the bottom hadn't been as big as it was? Once I saw the size of the gap, I thought for sure you'd have to do a raised bed of some sort, but seems like you did well on the ground. I'm not trying to be snarky, I'm just... trying to understand how much of your success was the stove and NASA sleeping bag vs the shelter itself, you know? Because I'm not hardy enough to do the research myself. 😅🥶

    I was born in the London Hospital in May 1972 and after I popped out the nurse asked if they could use a new type of blanket that they were experimenting with. My mum said yes and then started having regrets when they wrapped me up with one of these. But, they reassured her that they worked well. She asked if anyone other babies had been wrapped in them and the nurse said no, not yet. My mum still wasn’t convinced so the nurse said that if it made her feel better they were going to monitor my temperature just to be safe. In the end she relented and I became a guinea pig for foil blankets. My Dad was insisting that they call me Edward because I looked like a baked potato but my Mum didn’t like the name. And apparently after a few hours and some checking they swapped back to a normal blanket! My mum wasn’t sure if they were a success or not but she told me that they didn’t seem too impressed with the results and I’ve never seen them used for babies since. So there you go, I probably shattered the dreams of some poor guy who thought a very big cheque from the NHS was in the pipeline! 😊😊

      That's where the idea of longer panels weighed with logs atound the bottom will help. And the grommets allow the bottom of the tarp to be tied to the logs. It sounds like work but the grommets just need a hammer to attach, only big enough to thread some paracord. Use a single length of cord to run thru the grommets, around the bottom log, like a shoelace. You need 2 grommet rows, one 6"above the other. Also pre-attach the panels to the poles, roll up, and roll out. Secure the skinny poles to the supports. Wrap the whole structure with paracord around it, secure with the grommets at poles to help keep the wind from being such a threat. Love your stuff.
