The garage that did my swap said these motors are definitely worth forging out and going forced induction or nitrous. I plan on in the next year or two forging mine out to a 426 and adding nitrous

Its all about your builder and what they know about Hemi’s. I got a builder here in VA and he’s doing amazing work with 392 he has several 392s making 500-530 whp with headers ported tb and manifolds heads and cam. All his 392 builds are making stroker power for only 7k.

I think the most feelings I have ever hurt was when I was driving my 2003 W8 Passat Wagon. People take it very personal when a wagon beats them. Thanks for the video.
Ill be doing all the work myself besides the tune so I’ll save a lot of labor. That being said Ill be doing forged internals with a hellion kit and maybe a DP intake manifold IF I want to go all out. Ill rather have a modified 392 than a hellcat since most people will be more curious of it than a hellcat.
Right know I'm saving up to try and get the Helion twin turbo for my 17 charger scat pack tho I'm already happy with that I have stock so in no rush right now
Good Luck with that, hope it works out well and is safe, appears to be well designed kit finally that will work out for a broad assortment of Gen 3 hemis.
The problem with forced air in a 392 is the piston set up. To save weight Dodge reduced the thickness of the piston top to first compression ring. If the engine suffers detonation with forced air the piston top will crack or the piston will come apart. The cure to this problem is to replace the stock piston roller set with an aftermarket set like 6.4L HEMI DROP IN PISTON AND ROD KIT made by Livernois Motorsports. Not only are the piston kits designed for forced air they are also 15 lbs lighter than stock and will take up to 12lb boost.
If you have the budget grab the Hellcat - but if you want a sleeper, a supercharged 392 is really cool. You will still be a little behind a hellcat but you will shock the hell out of them.
With the 392 you also have options for boring and stroking and still adding forced air later on. It's not a bad engine to modify, it is just more costly. So I guess I think do your homework and have a plan for when something breaks, because it will. Then you can move on to the next stage of your build as long as you don't crack the block.
Preach! I'm looking to do the same to my scat shaker -- stroker, cam, & headers. Basically keep it NA w/ 550rhp. I'll upgrade to a hellcat if the FI bug comes calling.
Car sounds great man.. and love the overall look and agree with the 392 and what can be done with it with an NA stroker.. but you HAVE to go to a reputable shop for an extensive build like that. I have a Daytona 5.7 and just ordered some JBA Titanium shorty headers for it.. am waiting for them to arrive so I can get them installed. Should be a good match up with the 3.09 lsd I already have on the car..
This is a great a vid.. i think any platform is worth modding, all comes down to how much money you feel is worth it. The thing is dodge did such a great job with all the trim levels on the challengers and chargers. You can just jump up to the next trim so ppl are always going to say just get the hellcat.
yah you're right - Dodge does a great job of offering more power to us. So it opens up the debate of modding or just trading up. Many seem to just trade up now a days which is understandable. Either way - these mopars are a ton of fun!
If you're a serious modder, a 392 may not be worth it.....when you think about cost. A stock 392 has a ceiling due to its high compression. When you factor in the cost of bolt-ons, forced air setup and a built engine, you're in Hellcat territory in terms of total cost. Theres something to be said about building something yourself vs buying it, but if your goal from the beginning is to make Hellcat power from a 392, an actual Hellcat is definitely worth considering.
Def understand what you mean. I think most grab the trim they can afford & after a while they want a bit more power. But those hellcats are amazing, esp with how easy they are to squeeze more power out of.
Hey man! Excellent info and video! I definitely think going full bolt and tuned on the 392 is a great option if you know the right parts to use. There's also a lot of people out there that don't know how to drive these cars and get the RPM's into the power band where it needs to be in a roll race, definitely is huge in a roll race.
@@RTLife Assume buying a new crate. Basically, is the higher threshold potential large enough to make the significantly increased cost worth it? For example, I'm sure we'd all love to have a hellephant crate but $30,000 is definitely too steep for the significant majority.
@@codester12cool what are your thoughts? Any regrets? I'm currently deciding between stroking my 5.7 or putting down a couple extra thousand and swap out a stroked 392 hemi instead.
I plan on getting the procharger system. I've done alot of research and talked to various Mopar shops. My car is a 14' SRT8 chally 6 speed manual. First of all I'm getting the bottom end built with drop in pistons and rods. From what I've heard it's not durable enough to race frequently with a boosted 392 w/ stock internals even at a 6 psi. Basically have to baby the car and that's no fun. Since I have the manual transmission I was told I would start seeing lil slippage above 500 hp. But depending on how it's driven can be durable to about 650. My car will be a street car. Unless I can find a track that offers roll racing. Creating a drag setup to launch hard off the line is very expensive...I don't plan on investing in rear axles and rear diffs. For 6 speed manual 392 I was told forged Pistons AND RODS. Because since the motor is already taken apart its almost free labor to replace the rods to and any other components such as a cam or headers. Versus coming back later and spending the labor fees again to take the motor apart. Also a twin disc clutch, and an upgraded drive shaft. I'm still debating should I just go ahead and throw in a boost cam. (All I will need is lifters and pushrods) But at that point my car will be ready for a centrifugal. And will be able to about 750 who. According to the Mopar shop. FYI from alot the videos I've seen online it's vital to go to a MOPAR shop. That specializes in the hemis
Dude your beast is screaming with that new catback. I’m going to end up getting it. You’re gonna get me in trouble with the Mrs again. I keep spending money on mods every time I watch your videos.
I would say the forced air is gonna be the best bang for the buck. As long as you know to keep it conservative, your not going into the engine. Keeping it at 6lbs your still gonna have a smooth idle, running your air conditioning and kicking some ass. I love the sound of a lumpy popcorn sounding cam, but it makes a shitty daily driver. Now if you need more than that, slap in some revised pistons and you mise we’ll do some good rods while your in there so you know your safe. I would save the cam swap for last.
I’ll probably be dropping in MMX drop in pistons, full exhaust and a whipple. HHP charges like 1500 to install the pistons. Should be able to net 11-12 psi just swapping the pistons to fix the ring gap. I also Have a track hawk Tran and transfer case to put on the Durango.
Also have to be mindful of the transmission and the rear if you're modifying a scat. They're not made to handle more than 600hp. Bottom line, turning the 392 into a boosted machine is gonna be hell-expensive. BUT, but, you will have a truly unique Mopar! If you have the coin, I say go for it!!
I’m about to get a stroked 426 with all forged internals. Long tune headers. Cammed. Etc. paid the down payment just waiting on the parts to arrive. Already proCharges so know I need to get these forged internals to make sure I don’t blow it up. Lol.
if the bolt ons don't have big gains it just goes to show that dodge did a good job with getting a lot of performance from the factory. I'm just gonna keep paying mine down and get that hell cat upgrade in a few years.
yah the 6.1 is a great engine to modify. The problem though is they're old - likely many parts at this point will need to be changed/maintained - also the 8 speed transmission is a big upgrade in the 15+
@@RTLife i think dodge should bring back the 6.1 and make it the new RT. Assuming that the next generation of SRT lineups have more than 485hp, a 425hp RT is reasonable.
392 is a performance engine outa the factory with very specific tuning. Many mods are just gonna screw it up. If you wanna do a lot of mods, get a 5.7 - much more room to expand on that platform.
Hey rt love your videos man been subscribed since early 2018 but have a question. So with just the cold air and long tube headers how much do you think it'll be making on a 5.7?
Badass so probably just over 350 whp. The stock manifold is really small and this engine just wants to breathe better. Thanks for the reply man. Love the videos keep them coming!
What's your thoughts of a stock 392 with a very safety minded 3 or 4 lbs of boost? Not worth it? Is the amount of boost regulated or "set" mechically or in the tune?
I love my 392 scat. But I HATE the amount of money it takes to add any power to it. It’s pretty much preventing me from adding power. Now if I had a GM vehicle. Adding power is super easy and cheap. Hell I’d probably already have a 7-900 HP by now. Lol
R/T Life that’s true. Which I’ve never had a solid big number starting point ever before. It definitely makes it a LOT easier to move forward when you’ve already got a decent amount of HP to start with
My understanding is the ring lands are very close to the top of the piston and boost can destroy them easier than a 5.7. Oh and your page logo makes an awesome phone screen saver
Has anyone just gotten a dyno tune of a stock 392 car? It would be interesting to see how much of the FBO cars' gains are just from the dyno tune rather than the bolt-ons themselves.
When comparing the 6.4L and 5.7L, which one can handle the most modification without a complete engine rebuild? I am in the process of watching your videos and delving more into Mopar so sorry for the question if it is elementary. New subscriber.
Hello guys, do u know something about remanufactured camshafts in 5.7 hemi? Did chrysler did that in some year or they still mouting those failinig chamshafts and lifters? Greetings from Poland.
The ultimate goal for us 392 owners should be Hellcat blower. That, along with the other mods listed in this video should be enough power for most drivers.
@@joemomma5016 tbh it would cost too much. You’d need a 426 stroker kit to handle the boost safely. The whole thing might cost over $10k . Might as well just get a Hellcat motor for that lol
On my 6-4 I'm just about stock I have exhaust I have it installed any air intakes we're done anything to the throttle body. I am somewhat cautious about mods I customize my V6 had spent half of 2020 in the shop it is my go-to car is the car that I drive mostly in the winter🤦
ehhh my 6.1 will make 700 with just a whipple, and 500 with cam, tb, ported intake mani and a tune, lt headers and a 3inch ex all the way back... only paid 12k for the 300 str8, and for my year only 2k were made and only 850 in my color.
I think because its the easy way. Just my opinion. I have a scat but I don’t want to just buy a Hellcat I don’t know what is it with us car guys that and the hard way.
In my opinion yes it is well worth it but just keep in mind that it'll be a whole lot more expensive... First the 392 costs 10k more than an rt and the results are not all that impressive.... I recommend the rt and stroke plus supercharge.... Or RT and swap engine with hellcat engine by doing this you will still be at a ballpark of 45k when said and done ✅
Bro where are you located ? I have a 6.4L hemi that came off my srt8 2012 super bee going into my 2005 ram 1500 rumble bee . Help me build it I need a good coach you seem like you know what you are doing .

FCA knock sensors are abyssmal. Rods, pistons, block and crank are relatively weak. The 392 is a great motor for someone that's content with just bolt ons.
Right here. Stock 6.4, long tube headers, open exhaust, D1SC ProCharger. 641 whp@ 6.5 psi. 93 pump gas. My wife has run a best 1/4 mile of 10.75@ 127 mph. Her and I installed the ProCharger almost 2 years and 20,000 miles ago. We rent the local 1/4 mile track between 3 and 4 times every year with a group of friends so the car has a ton of passes on it and she drives it every day. Great tune with low boost. That's the key!

Have a track hawk Tran and transfer case to put on the Durango.
Ny to AZ sounds great what kind of mufflers do you have I have a 2019 srt Durango with the x pipe but I think it needs a muffler change
He just recently changed his exhaust to a straight pipe kit. ruclips.net/video/QLpro58ZPGQ/видео.html
yah I switched to the magnaflow Xmod catback exhaust - def an aggressive setup!
I’m about to get a stroked 426 with all forged internals. Long tune headers. Cammed. Etc. paid the down payment just waiting on the parts to arrive. Already proCharges so know I need to get these forged internals to make sure I don’t blow it up. Lol.
You do a mid muffler delete finally?! Sounds so much better!
this has no mufflers or resonators - def screams now!
@@RTLife sounds awesome man
I agree 392 is good n/a. 6.1 is better for boost
yah the 6.1 is a great engine - solid platform to build power
This is 100% correct
Thank you
if the bolt ons don't have big gains it just goes to show that dodge did a good job with getting a lot of performance from the factory. I'm just gonna keep paying mine down and get that hell cat upgrade in a few years.
they really did a solid job with the 392 - the pieces in place are very good out of factory. I hope you land that Hellcat - certainly a lot of fun.
From what i've seen on various forums and youtube videos, the 6.1L likes mods the most.
yah the 6.1 is a great engine to modify. The problem though is they're old - likely many parts at this point will need to be changed/maintained - also the 8 speed transmission is a big upgrade in the 15+
@@RTLife i think dodge should bring back the 6.1 and make it the new RT. Assuming that the next generation of SRT lineups have more than 485hp, a 425hp RT is reasonable.
if that was the case most people would likely opt for the 6.1L w/ 8 speed. Just because the engine will handle boost better.
392 is a performance engine outa the factory with very specific tuning. Many mods are just gonna screw it up. If you wanna do a lot of mods, get a 5.7 - much more room to expand on that platform.
yah the 392 needs the big mods put into place & from there you will see some nice gains. 5.7 is a perfect engine if you like to do bolt ons.
Just need piston rings gapped for boost or change pistons
Agreed - drop in new pistons & you're ready for more air!
My 6.4 is Pro charged it handles it well
yah if it's tuned right you can run air no problems
What do you wanna know something funny I just bought the car two weeks ago from the dealership in Lebanon PA and the car came form Texas
If you had a 392. What kind of cam would you purchase for your 392 and what brand long tube headers would you purchase?
Hey rt love your videos man been subscribed since early 2018 but have a question. So with just the cold air and long tube headers how much do you think it'll be making on a 5.7?
You're going to gain a healthy amount of peek power with those long tubes - I bet you gain around 30whp over stock with intake/long tubes.
the exhaust manifold on the 5.7 is brutal
Badass so probably just over 350 whp. The stock manifold is really small and this engine just wants to breathe better. Thanks for the reply man. Love the videos keep them coming!
@@RTLife just bought a 2019 5.7 charger, so with a good tune/long tube headers/air intake I can get probably 30hp to 50 ?
@@Muchacho77 30hp to 40hp is my estimate
What's your thoughts of a stock 392 with a very safety minded 3 or 4 lbs of boost? Not worth it? Is the amount of boost regulated or "set" mechically or in the tune?
Very informative
Thanks man - hope this helps some out there
I love my 392 scat. But I HATE the amount of money it takes to add any power to it. It’s pretty much preventing me from adding power. Now if I had a GM vehicle. Adding power is super easy and cheap. Hell I’d probably already have a 7-900 HP by now. Lol
yah modding these mopars gets a little on the pricey side. The good thing is you have a solid starting point!
R/T Life that’s true. Which I’ve never had a solid big number starting point ever before. It definitely makes it a LOT easier to move forward when you’ve already got a decent amount of HP to start with
Very interested in the helion twin turbo sleeper. Probably not going to happen until the car is paid off
that setup is amazing - the results are impressive
My understanding is the ring lands are very close to the top of the piston and boost can destroy them easier than a 5.7. Oh and your page logo makes an awesome phone screen saver
Yeah I’m sitting thinking to myself I think I’m just staying NA
you can build some nice power N/A - just ends up costing a ton. But it's easier on the engine
My thought has always been that if you’re not going to buy up then mod up.
I can certainly get behind that
Has anyone just gotten a dyno tune of a stock 392 car? It would be interesting to see how much of the FBO cars' gains are just from the dyno tune rather than the bolt-ons themselves.
When comparing the 6.4L and 5.7L, which one can handle the most modification without a complete engine rebuild? I am in the process of watching your videos and delving more into Mopar so sorry for the question if it is elementary. New subscriber.
Hello guys, do u know something about remanufactured camshafts in 5.7 hemi? Did chrysler did that in some year or they still mouting those failinig chamshafts and lifters? Greetings from Poland.
The cam lifter failure is still an issue in some of these hemi's. I would def recommend putting a stronger cam in one of these & put hellcat lifters
@@RTLife Ok i get it... but its not nice :(
The ultimate goal for us 392 owners should be Hellcat blower. That, along with the other mods listed in this video should be enough power for most drivers.
What would you need to safely have the hellcat blower
@@joemomma5016 tbh it would cost too much. You’d need a 426 stroker kit to handle the boost safely. The whole thing might cost over $10k . Might as well just get a Hellcat motor for that lol
If I go the cammed route , can you list where we can buy them on line ? And if I go forced air, what are some reputable companies ?
With 5-6 lbs or boost on a 392 should you forge it?
That's up to you but 5-6lbs with good tuning you shouldn't run into any issues
R/T Life nice thanks man!
I’ve heard the limit on boost is 7-8lbs with stock internals, so where you’re aiming at should be just fine
The best modification you can make to your hemi is weight reduction. Today's cars are heavy. My goal is 400lbs from my 1320.
What kinda of throttle body did you get?
Hey where did you get your oil catch can ? What’s the website ?
My neighbors hate me when I roll up in a loud 392 jeep srt
it's a lot of fun! These hemi's sound so good
Why not NOS like a 100 or 150 kit?
you can certainly do that.
I think because its the easy way. Just my opinion. I have a scat but I don’t want to just buy a Hellcat I don’t know what is it with us car guys that and the hard way.
Hey i can't remember what kind of shorty headrs you had on your car?
I had Hooker shortys but checked to Dynatech long tubes
455 hp n your 0-60 is 3.8? Thats amazing. Almost a hellcat.
.2 off a hellcat...thats unreal😁
I would give a hellcat a headache from 0-60/80 mph
In my opinion yes it is well worth it but just keep in mind that it'll be a whole lot more expensive... First the 392 costs 10k more than an rt and the results are not all that impressive.... I recommend the rt and stroke plus supercharge.... Or RT and swap engine with hellcat engine by doing this you will still be at a ballpark of 45k when said and done ✅
Bro where are you located ? I have a 6.4L hemi that came off my srt8 2012 super bee going into my 2005 ram 1500 rumble bee . Help me build it I need a good coach you seem like you know what you are doing .
Which oil are you running?
Just purchased a thorton tuning chip for my 17 charger r/t what's your review on this chip please let me know
I honestly never used it - don't want to give you bad info
@@RTLife thanks for the reply let u know how it feels when I install it maybe see u at future shows let u know in person we already met at milridge inn
FCA knock sensors are abyssmal. Rods, pistons, block and crank are relatively weak. The 392 is a great motor for someone that's content with just bolt ons.
I think I'll just get the Hellcat.
they're awesome rides - you will not regret it
Can you give us some examples of some people who have done it and their engine has lasted more than a year?
I probably can't - the reason is most that modify have a new setup within 5-6 months. They keep adding more & more
Did you clean motor before filming? Clean AF
Must be the hood! Def keeps the engine bay clean lol - thanks man
can you help me find out what happend to rt drod?
I have no clue. One day all of his videos were down. I tried reaching out - no response back
Your neighbors must hate you haha
hahahah yah they do! I try not starting it up now to early or late
I just want 15 hp so I could say I have a 500 hp car! Lol
hahaa - understandable. Mid muffler delete & tune you will be over that no problem
Yeah i was just thinking that. Even a canned tune would get ya to 500hp crank. About $800 to $1000 due to the PCM swap + tuner for 15hp😋🤭🤭
What is your average MPG after all these mods?
I don't really look at MPG anymore - don't do much driving in this because I stay at home & work
I average 12 mgp with all the bolt ons and a cam when city driving. I get 22-23 highway
@@heritag7 That ain't bad at all
I think its better kept n.a
def a great platform for N/A builds
Nipping hellcats 🤙🏽
👍🏽
So why dose dodge say it has 485 hp stock?
there are some theories but no one knows for sure why they underrate their engines
MODIFICATIONS IS JUST ANOTHER BUSINESS, ASKING FOR TROUBLE. UNRELIABILITY AND MONEY PIT. KEEP IT FACTORY AND LET THE ENGINEERS DO THEIR JOBS TO MAKE THIS THE BEST BALANCE FOR THE AUTO ENTHUSIAST AND CONSUMER. THIS IS A DEPRECIATING ASSET.
Most things enjoyable or fun are attached to risk - I love having an R/T that has this kind of power
@@RTLife THEN YOU RISK RELIABILITY AND VOIDING ANY WARRANTY
THERE IS A DOWNSIDE FROM FIT TO FURTHER MODIFICATION. UNBALANCE. THEN THERE ARE THE GIMMICKS AND SNAKE OIL. OVERALL IT BECOMES A MONEY PIT THAT NO ONE WANTS AT RESALE TIME AND ENDS UP BEING THE OWNERS PROBLEM.
The money you put towards modifying a 392 that is not forged proof from the factory, is not worth the risk. Instead just use it to put a down payment for a Hellcat that is forged proof from the factory and you don’t have to worry about something going to break on the 392 and be done with it.😃
This is interesting to me as I'm now a Scat Pack owner. I don't plan on doing any power mods anytime soon, never know what the future may hold. Here's my walk around video on the Scat if you are interested ruclips.net/video/iu4UzBKMjkc/видео.html
Congrats on the new 392 - looks great!
