  • Large crowds have clashed with police outside the South Korean National Assembly after the country's president declared emergency martial law in the country in a late night television address.
In brief, martial law is a temporary rule by military authorities in a time of emergency, when the civil authorities are deemed unable to function.
President Yoon Suk Yeol said martial law is necessary to protect the country from North Korea's communist forces and to eliminate anti-state elements.
South Korea’s main opposition party leader Lee Jae-myung has condemned the move, calling it unconstitutional.
The move comes as Yoon's People Power Party and the main opposition Democratic Party continue to disagree over next year's budget bill.

The National Assembly just unanimously lifted the martial law, and the military personnel is moving out of the premise. This was the most spectacular presidential political suicide I've seen so far in modern Korean history.

Unbelievable. Political suicide is absolutely correct. I can't recall something similar in a 1st world government and culture. Absolute corruption or madness.

Time is crucial, the more you wait, the more it'll be hard to infiltrate and conduct operation and then exit safely.
      Take your decision asap.

Please, to all my friends abroad and everyone who reads this, pay close attention to ensure that another tragedy like May 18 never happens again. What happened on May 18th

    • @Jessica-um8ou
      @Jessica-um8ou 18 часов назад +6

The term 5.18 refers to the Gwangju Uprising, a pivotal moment in South Korean history. It occurred from May 18 to May 27, 1980, when citizens of Gwangju protested against the military dictatorship of Chun Doo-hwan, who had seized power following the assassination of President Park Chung-hee in 1979.
The protests began as a peaceful demonstration for democracy and escalated after the government deployed military forces to suppress them. Soldiers responded with extreme violence, leading to the deaths of hundreds of civilians, though the exact number remains disputed. The brutality included shootings, beatings, and mass arrests, making it one of the darkest chapters in South Korea’s modern history.
Despite the repression, the Gwangju Uprising became a symbol of the struggle for democracy in South Korea, inspiring subsequent movements that eventually led to the end of military rule and the establishment of a democratic government in the late 1980s.
The events of May 18 are commemorated annually in South Korea, with the day recognized as a national symbol of resistance against authoritarianism. A memorial in Gwangju honors the victims and ensures that their sacrifice is not forgotten. For many Koreans, 5.18 serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting democracy and human rights.

I am a university student living in South Korea.
The main opposition "Democratic Party" (Progressive, Left) has a much larger number of people than the current presidential ruling party, "the People's Power" (Conservative, Right).
The Democratic Party of Korea is pushing for amendments to the commercial law that destroys the free market economy, including the anti-discrimination law that suppresses freedom of expression and makes it sexually promiscuous.
Also, the Democratic Party of Korea is trying hard to put Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong in prison, shouting out the dismantlement of chaebol, which cannot be praised even as a patriot.
And the Democratic Party adopted a basic income, such as distributing 100,000 won($70.4) in basic income, and designated the party theory itself as implying that it is oriented toward communism in the first place.
It also confused the judicial system by adopting an anti-arrest law and a bill called complete deprivation of prosecutorial investigation rights.
The declaration of emergency martial law in Korea should have been done long ago, and the National Assembly should have been dissolved.
South Korea seems to have developed into K-pop and Samsung Electronics, but it is a country with deep roots and problems such as communists, spies, and juche.
Now, President Yoon Suk Yeol is calling for liberal democracy, the Korea-U.S. alliance, and a free market economy.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party is calling for communism, the abolition of the Korea-U.S. alliance, hatred of America, love of China, and the dismantlement of the chaebol.
The Democratic Party of Korea considers President Syngman Rhee, who was born in Korea, studied in the U.S. to learn about liberal democracy, free market economy, and Christian values and founded the Republic of Korea, as a mere pro-Japanese group and traitor.
The Democratic Party of Korea is a huge opposition party, so all the president can do is continue to refuse proposals for legislation and declare emergency martial law.
If President Yoon Suk Yeol does not declare emergency martial law, The Democratic Party(the left) continues to propose evil laws in the National Assembly, Americans in Korea will also be in danger. It is very unfortunate that many people do not know this.

Since Yoon committed such an illegal act, i reckon most Koreans, even his supporters, have turned against him. I guess he just tried to simmer down scandals in which he and his wife are involved and avoid political attack from opposition by declaring the martial law. However, it was the worst move he's ever made.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law at 10:25 PM on December 3, only for the National Assembly to unanimously pass a resolution demanding its revocation 2 hours and 35 minutes later, at 1:00 AM on December 4.
The resolution was passed with all 190 members present voting in favor during an extraordinary session of the National Assembly. Following the vote, the Speaker’s Office stated, “The declaration of martial law is nullified as a result of the resolution to revoke it.”
The President’s Office has not yet issued an official response regarding the resolution.

South Korea is in 'golden age' I remember when people were saying France is leading in beauty industry, Italians are leading in fashion and Germany is leading in military and economics BUT in last years we can see that SK is becoming a leader in all of those areas. I see Seoul today as I was seeing Paris and EU cities 10 year ago as 'bastion of culture' beside great economics and military. While 50 years ago Koreans didn't even had to eat properly so DON'T F* UP YOUR COUNTRY PLEASE! South Korea should not be a warzone it should be a stable and powerful country that grows and takes care of it's own people, Koreans have seen enough wars through the history. I'm not Korean I'm an European who wishes all the best to Korean people.

The leader of the Homeland Innovation Party, Cho Kuk, stated on December 4th that “an immediate investigation into President Yoon Suk-yeol must proceed.”
Speaking to reporters after the National Assembly passed a resolution demanding the revocation of martial law, Cho criticized the president, saying, “President Yoon’s declaration of martial law neither meets the necessary conditions nor follows the proper procedures.”
He added, “This is not an emergency situation, and the declaration did not go through a Cabinet meeting. Therefore, President Yoon’s martial law declaration is, in itself, an illegal act and a crime.”
Cho further argued, “Although the president cannot be investigated for crimes except for treason or external aggression, President Yoon’s martial law act constitutes military rebellion and must be investigated immediately.”
He also emphasized, “Even though the martial law has been revoked, we must proceed with impeachment as soon as this situation stabilizes.”
Earlier at 1:00 AM on December 4th, the National Assembly convened a plenary session just 2 hours and 40 minutes after President Yoon declared martial law, passing the resolution demanding its revocation with all 190 lawmakers present voting in favor.
According to Article 77, Clause 5 of the South Korean Constitution, the president must lift martial law if the National Assembly demands its revocation with a majority vote.
