I got it to work by taking off the side cover by hand, undoing that screw, and removing the sheath that holds the filter up. Then, I pushed up on the ridged springed mechanism that catches the plastic piece with a knife WHILE pushing water filter into place. It made a different sound and when I eased off pressure it held pretty well. While holding the filter in place I put the Sheath back on and screwed it in

This was 100% the fix, I removed the top shelf so I could stick my head under there while pushing the filter on and noticed the teeth were completely off by 1/2 inch. The filter would literally have never been able to go on without pushing the clip up with a butter knife while pushing in the filter. I just finished installing mine 5 minutes ago after reading this comment, I appreciate it!

My filter would not lock into place which is so frustrating. I tried your suggestions and the filter still would not lock into place. Here's what did work: ON THE FILTER itself is a CLEAR PLASTIC piece with ridges. It can easily slide out of position when it tries to lock into place in the fridge. So I used a little crazy glue and secured the little clear plastic piece onto the filter so that it would not move. Then I slid the filter (with the secured clear plastic piece) in the casing, just like in the video and voila, IT LOCKED INTO PLACE!! I just saved $60!! Thanks to teh author of this video as it got me thinking outside of the box.

Awesome tip. Thank you, to be honest I think the problem might be that the locking mechanism inside the fridge is going bad so it might make sense to buy one and have it handy just in case the easy fixes stop working. I think I messed mine up by buying a cheap filters and having to force them in and out at times. Anyone reading this: Buying generic filters can damage the locking mech. as it did for me. I'm happy my video helped you.

Great video and it helped me very much. With my unit, the problem turned out to not be the filter housing. Instead, the plastic lock piece on the filter itself was the problem. It looked exactly like the one on the old filter, but the one on the old filter locked into place. I now just need to keep this and swap it with every new filter I buy.

Same issue but mine was that I could not compress the filter, I tried to manipulate the slide lock as you pointed out, no dice, so I took the remaining screws 4 screws out surrounding the housing, you can see them when you remove the cover once removed, AI still could not manipulate the slide lock, so after the 4 screws were removed, I could pull the housing towards me and on the back side, GOLD MINE, the spring with a spacer in the middle, that controls the lock in place design, with little effort, I moved it with a flat head and the filter released. A little more work, BUT YOU GOT ME THERE, THANK YOU!!!!!! eNeVe Family

All right, I got tired of messing with this problem, so here's my 2 cents: I watched several videos that offered advice on how to get the filter to lock in place. I tried them all without success. I removed the filter base, took it apart and attached the base receptacle to the filter and reassembled the base from the filter. It will take patience and small screwdriver to get the springs back into place, but you can do it. Snap the pieces back together and re-install. So far so good. This method will also work if you can't get the filter off the base. Update: Here it is 5 months later and I will have to deal with this again. Here I go.

This video was helpful to fix my locking problem. I didn't end up needing to mess with the springs at all. Merely removing the small cover (no screws) and the main cover (single screw) was sufficient -- the filter locked into place first try after the main cover was out of the way. Then I just put the covers back on while the filter was locked in place.

Extremely beneficial video and your explanation was spot on. Sure enough, when I disassembled mine the springs landed on the shelf, after figuring out how it all goes back together the locking system works great now. Thanks again for your time and explanation. Reiterate an earlier post "what a horrible design"

Going to add my thanks for your explanation of how this works. I was able to take mine apart and fix it based on your video. Turns out the springs were off track and not engaging the lock as you said can happen. First time filter change with this fridge and this problem occurs. What a terrible (and frustrating) design. My last fridge used MWF filters and I never had any kind of issue like this.

Love this video! I didn't end up fully taking mine apart, but between the video and the comments I was able to identify the issue that you said at the end. My problem the clear plastic piece on the filter was sliding and moving so I wedged toothpick pieces under where it is attached so that it wouldn't move then I was able to get it to click in place.

I removed my filter base, I packed the slider, spring area with silicone grease. worked it back and forth several times until its moved freely...then tried out locking a filter in outside the fridge, its locks...so the problem with these is the locking slide is not sliding freely. The locking slide is not part of the water connection so grease is not going to affect water.

And the plastic has to go right in between the two springs so if you slide it in horizontally and then twist it it will work if that makes sense you will know what I'm talking about once you take it apart and this is probably the reason many people buy a new housing base
