It seems like every or most western countries have a more "lenient" justice system than the US. However, it is mildly ridiculous to hear about the "99 years", "336 years" ... "to be served consecutively" that you have in the US. Obviously, those convicted to such, unrealistic, sentences will never get out. When ppl are handed life time like 16 years (which is the max sentence in my country) they will serve 16 years. And there is no proof of these re-offending any more than someone who got 36 years. And when we don't want them getting out at all, they are handed a sentence of undetermined time. In rare cases, they are released when they should not have been and re-offend. May I say .... that happens a lot, and I mean a lot, in the US, too. One well-known case in Scandinavia is Anders Breivik of Norway who went on (an American inspired) killing spree back in 2011. He got a 21-year custodial sentence but he will never be free. I suppose, theoretically, he could walk when he is in his 70' or 80' but it is unlikely. ,
From the CANADIAN cases I've seen. I agree. There was the Canadian Cannibal killer. Vincent LI killed his victim on a greyhound bus. And ATE PART OF HIM. He was out of prison in 8 years I think. The Canadian system deemed him "rehabilitated" and he was released. He changed his name, too. SICKENING. English cases too where the system FAILED. The murder of James Bulger. The criminal justice system in Australia is just as bad. Too lenient. All three need to be revised.
The sadistic brutality of his first murder should have triggered the court to have given him a much longer sentence. Forensic evaluation has to be utilized as a part of sentencing and consideration before release. He scewered a 91 year old victim and hung him on a door, when does life become life in England? He constantly defied his conditions of release with violence. There were so many warnings missed.
Life without parole and execution are the only 2 appropriate sentences for maniacs like Andrew Dawson. They'll never change, regardless of how much time they serve, but for reasons that I'll never understand, some get relatively short sentences, many of them are granted parole after serving only a fraction of their time and some don't serve a single day in prison if they convince the court that they're insane. The criminal justice system is broken.
If you’re found not guilty by reason of insanity you still serve your sentence in a mental institution, it’s not less of a sentence or an easier one like you’re implying
This it should be a good true crime story! Andrew Dawson was a horrific person! I was just writing a story on him for my own true crime channel but you guys will do an incredible job on it! Great job real crime!
I’m sure when a murderer is let out of prison to go do some more murders, that sends a very strong “don’t do it” signal to potential murderers/aspiring serial killers. It’s disturbing how frequently that same exact thing is allowed to happen. Who in the hell are these judges letting them out?!? 😒 Every murderer deserves no less than death themselves. Life in prison isn’t true justice in suffering consequence for action, but somebody actually signs the paperwork and lets these psychos back out onto the streets to do it all over again. That’s the real issue.
My deepest sympathies to the surviving family members for their devastating losses. I'll never understand how or why parole boards will release these killers back into society, especially considering just how gruesome some of those murders were inflicted. Maybe if parole boards had to house these killers within their own homes and with their families if the killer's given parole, then more care would be taken to prove these killers deserve a life outside of prison. Crime scene and autopsy photos of the victim's wounds and victim impact statements should be mandatory for any violent criminal up for release (survivors could give video statements during the criminal's hearing to insure their voices are heard) and if the killer is granted parole then goes on to commit more violent crimes, the parole board should be charged for knowingly releasing a dangerous criminal back into society and ignoring the evidence before them. Too many innocent people have died because of parole board apathy across the USA and they need to be held accountable for knowingly releasing dangerous criminals back into society despite ample proof of that criminal's probable return to violent crime. I realize this case was based in the UK but there are scores of cases like this one where violent killers get released then commit more violent crimes.
Exactly my word: the psychiatrists and judges who decide to release those murderers should face hefty consequences as well. If a medical doctor makes a mistake, there's consequences, so in such cases when innocent lifes are lost again because of a misjudgment, heads should roll. That dhould nake them think twice about releasing a dangerous criminal back on society.
Some people are beyond rehabilitation, people who watch these programs are acutely aware of how evil some human beings are and they need no second or third chances.
They test for sociopathy and when they determine people are sociopaths rather than deciding "this person is beyond fixing" they take the opposite thought and think "well then it's not their fault, we can't hold them responsible" which is insane. If someone is a sociopath they are by definition beyond rehabilitation but the judges and shrinks who should know better don't care.
What I can't understand - and I'm a retired mental health social worker - is how the justice/legal system simply cannot fathom that there are people out in the world who have no conscious, no morality, not even the basics of emotions.....
