at 5:18, that's kinda what i do. just a 'folk artist', make a 2"x2" doodle & xerox it a bunch, cut it out & glue it on a sheet of paper, rotating the doodle. then, i use yellow card stock for the final piece...... right now, i have writer's block, but as 1 or more years slip by i'll have a good idea what i wanna say & fold it behind the yellow card doodle with $1-$2/(more?) with a noticeable color paper clip. i used to staple my art to clean telephone poles, but plastic-head tacks are better to remove...... some people HATE flyers on their CLEAN poles, so they'll be shocked to find money & a writing when they tear it down! stack 5 yellow art cards vertically on a pole, like a "totem pole"!..... hopefully, they'll buy a HOMELESS guy some fruit or a cooked chicken from SAFEWAY! Yippie!
I use a bunch of different "Margaritaville University' notebooks for most of my journaling haha but I'm trying to use up what I have before buying new things
i loved this video so much! i'm a big notebook fan but sometimes struggle to actually use them because they feel too precious or i'm blocked. so videos like this are a great inspiration and reminder to grab a pen and just do it
I buy nice books and never write in them used to feel my I put /writing would spoil them...such a neg thought of self ....so understandyour comment I’m 71 ...still not writing 😂😂😂I’ll get there xx
So what if you ruin it? What's the worst that could happen? I used to think that way, but I assure you seeing a completed notebook with YOUR thoughts and doodles is much better than seeing a blank one!
Idk, I’ve genuinely thrown away notebooks because what I wrote in them was so pointless and ridiculous I never wanted to see it again. Like my old work notebook. I never want to accidentally ruin a gorgeous notebooks.
Loved the video! Stillman and Birn are amazing sketchbooks! I use their heavy weight or super heavy weight for gouache and watercolor. I also like the Royal Talens sketchbook because I can just put whatever I want there and not feel "bad" because it's inexpensive.
Oooh yes I have one of the smaller stillman and birn sketchbooks and it’s sooo nice!! I use it too infrequently, but it’s so nice for painting with gouache!! The Talens sketchbook definitely has its time and place!
Stillman and Birn have also been my favorite paper quality in a sketch book style book! I sometimes do a lot of (wet at times) layering and they really hold up to it.
Just found you! Cool content - thank you. I started a paint every day practice in Jan, 2022 and end up doing a lot of that painting either on nice pieces of individual watercolor paper - or small sketch or watercolor paper books. It's been a great addition to my art and teaching practice. I appreciate you mentioning influences from Joan Didion, Julia Cameron and Georgia O"Keefe. Each of those women hold a special place in my heart. Thank you again.
I got the hobonichi weekly planner this year and I love it so much! I'm a freelancer and it helps me stay on top of my to-do list much better than a digital calendar.
These are my favorite kind of videos for sure! I find that while I feel a kind of freedom in my sketchbook, that it is more structured and there's a certain expectation that I place on a sketchbook's contents than a notebook. My notebook is a catch all, and I love it for that! I put everything and anything in it and it is not supposed to be polished. I enjoy using it daily and carry it everywhere! 😊 I use a Kokuyo Campus Smart Ring Binder in size A5 with grid paper. I have another in size B5 with plain lined paper too that I love to use
Funnily enough, I first discovered your channel through your "how I’m using the Hobonichi Techo as an artist" video so I'm biased in loving this kind of content (although I'm loving your art content too and going through your old videos! So many gems 😍). I used to BUJO in sketchbooks but I realized that I was spending most of my time setting up the pages instead of concentrating on filling them with creativity, memories, thoughts, etc. So in 2024 I've changed my line-up to all things Hobonichi! I have: -- A Hobonichi Cousin Avec for daily journaling (your reading of Joan Didion inspired my entry today!) -- A Hobonichi Weeks for tarot pulls/readings -- A Hobonichi 5-year for recording memories of my dogs (I know someone who started a journal when her cat was diagnosed with a terminal disease so she could keep as many memories of her last days/weeks/months with her cat as possible. I know a couple other people whose pets have died last year (including my sister's dog, who I loved dearly) and decided I didn't want to wait until something bad happened to start memory-keeping. 💜) -- A Hobonichi 5-year for checking in on my yearly goals -- A Moleskine as a commonplace book -- An OHUHU Mix Media Sketchbook (cheap as chips from Amazon (boo) with fantastically thick paper that can take a lashing of gouache on both sides of the paper) -- A Hobonichi for recording a colour palette a day (good motivation for staying aware of my surroundings because now I'm always on the lookout for inspiration, helps pass the time in Dr's waiting rooms, and good to look back on when I need inspo for art creation) I realize this is A LOT but because I can't work due to my disability, I have more free time than the average person and I'm trying to integrate more creativity into my life. Art therapy is real! Plus, maybe it'll help build up my brain's stamina since that's the part of me that's """most disabled"""😅Besides, I'm not putting any pressure on myself to write in them every day. Ex: I'm not pulling tarot cards every day, and I'm not planning on writing in the doggie A5 every day (you can easily change the year of entry so that the journal lasts across 7, 8, 10+ years!)
I am a 3 ring binder person. I thrift paper use a bunch of different kinds. I made a 2023 flip thru and this video makes me want to experiment with pocket books that can unfold into binder sized sheets after they are filled.
I love getting a peak into your system! A fresh notebook is so delightful but I do find myself treating them preciously. I appreciate the reminder that they look all the better for being loved and worn. I would like to see your favorite writing and doodling tools!
this sounds like a really interesting system! I love the idea of keeping a field notes journal for jotting down thoughts. I'm trying to design a personal planner for myself and I wanted to include brain dump pages, but the variability of the amount of pages I'd need makes a mini notebook sound much more appealing. thanks for sharing!
i started drawing and painting in my sketchbook because of your videos, you really inspired me to start creating more! i am also reading the ''the artist's way'' at the moment! sending you lots of love 💌✨
Absolutely loved everything about this video! It felt poignant and poetic. Your notebooks are beautiful! My favorite right now are the hobonichi a6 and stalogy✨
Just found you and loved this video. I recently discovered Midori and love the gridded one. I use seawhite travel journals for art and doodling - it’s a uk brand. I have lots of sketchbooks and notebooks on the go. I’m starting to get over my fear of using ‘nice’ books!
Loved seeing all the different notebooks and ways you use them. I've enjoyed Strathmore's brown hard and soft cover books. They're a great size to throw in a backpack or tote. I have a ton of scrap paper from books and big sheets and have recently started using a zip up A5 binder as my sketch book.
I love my midori MD notebook. There are sooooo many pages in it. I have also found that it handles almost any medium I choose to use in it. No bleed through even with heavy ink. The pages crinkle so good when I use wet media. It is dedicated to fast and loose sketches, paintings, and writing thoughts. I love it so much.
Your red sketchbook seemed to have wonderful work in it! Can’t wait to see the full tour! 🤩 Thank you for sharing your work and recs. Greetings from Belgium 💫
Love seeing these kinds of videos! I really like impermanent notebooks - things with spiral binding so I can tear things out of it. As a writer, there isn't a tonne I want to keep and once it's been transferred to a digital file, or the tasks are checked off, or put somewhere it can be saved longer, I tear it out. I sometimes keep the empty cover of notebooks because I have a sense of achievement from looking at them! Look at all that work I did! There is nothing left in it.
love this. I have kept journals/notebooks for many years and more recently sketchbooks. really loving the royal talens because they are nice enough but also not intimidatingly nice. sometimes I think of scanning parts of old books bc overtime they do take up a lot so space but I get super attached to paper ephemera 📝 thank you so much for your videos
Great video! I use the same Midori to plan out my zines. I keep trying, but I still haven't figured out how to keep a sketchbook--still too intimidated. I'll keep trying, though.
I love this kind of video! As someone who does generally essentially keep a “captains log” style journal I think the grass is the same. I like to remember the things I do and how I spend my time. It keeps me mindful, in a similar way, I don’t want to write I was on my phone all day. And if did, I can remind myself that I don’t do it that often 😅 I have a collection of notebooks too! I have my log, my common place and a sketchbook
Hell yeah dude! I have almost the same Midori notebook you've got that is my ideas/ white boarding spot for 2024. I got the A5 in grid~*~* I have great admiration for your ability to do morning pages in an un-lined space. I started making my way through the Artist Way in October and finally putting the work to practice in a lined moleskine I got for the holidays! Love those daily doodles! Thanks for doing this tour! Super inspiring :)
So well edited and presented! Thanks for sharing! I love the Midori Cotton MD and Moleskine sketchbooks, but it takes me forever to complete cause like you said, they feel more luxurious. I use the CROQUIS sketchbook for actual sketches! ❤
Lovely video Kristen. I recently threw away my journals/planners from my 20s where a lot of my mental health lows were documented in real time. It was freeing! I did want to ask, what black pen/marker do you use for your writing and sketching/drawing for outlining?
Oooh that sounds very freeing! I typically use a black gel pen from zebra? I think? whichever black gel pen I can find. For sketching I usually use a pentel brush pen or a pentel sign pen!
I loved this video! it was so interesting to see how you use all your journals and i loved to see all your doodles and drawings along the way!! i am so bad at keeping a journal. there are so many times i've tried and i always start strong but i've abandoned so many in the past!! lately i can only keep up with one sketchbook but hopefully in the future i am able to start my journal journey lol
I heard somewhere “the best way to do something consistently is to do it inconsistently” which is so true! I fall off the wagon for months at a time and I try not to give myself too much grief about it!!
I’m in the second year of my five year Hobonichi. I also use Field notes and moleskine pocket books that I carry with me in a leather cover and a fountain pen. Thanks for sharing 😊
Oh yes rabbit hole indeed! First it was the leather then it was the fountain pens. Over 20 for sure…how many does one person need? MORE! @@littletinyegg
Loved this video!! I struggle to hold myself accountable to journaling, I would love to every day but barely make it once a week. Do you have any suggestions/tips please? I’ve been considering a sticker rewards system like in kindergarten…
What I've used to help myself be accountable for journaling is taking the pressure off. If you have a smaller journal, it's easier to fill the pages and therefore you see progression more quickly. I'm a little bit of a stationary nerd so I have my Moleskines that I recently completed after having one for 6 years lol. What has helped me is morning pages [the stream of consciousness writing that is mentioned in this video]. You could always time yourself, or invest in stickers you like and maybe put one on every page you complete? I also take breaks from journaling and work in different journals which I find helps the monotony. Hope this helps haha
The best way to do something consistently is to do it inconsistently! Doing it everyday is great but you certainly don't have to! If the sticker chart idea works, that's adorable and so smart too!
Really nice to listen to while doing my physical therapy, hope you are doing well! I'm inspired by your tenacity with journaling and sketchbooking, really amazing. Happy new year!
Hi, Kris, new to you - saw you as I scrolled on RUclips. I've kept a journal for over 55 years (I'm 66).the last 10 years or so I've written less than the daily writing I did till then. I think that's due in part to physical issues. Carpal tunnel is a big problem. I also prefer writing in bed, but it's become uncomfortable because I broke my lower back done years ago, and sitting on a bed, bending over to write, hurts. I continue trying develop an art practice. My brain doesn't want to schedule anything - except my first love, which is reading. (I'm sure your library partner understands; I retired from a library after 34 years). So, I'm wondering how you handle disciplining yourself? Yes, art is your job. But is art your most favorite thing? If so, what is your 2nd most favorite thing? Art is my 2nd, and finding the discipline to put aside my 1st favorite thing is so hard. Do you follow me?
I’m a fellow artist and make Artist Vlogs with my lifestyle as a full time artist. Irene Torok Art. I’m also immune compromised living with crohns for 20 years. Many surgeries and bumps in the road. Glad I came across your videos. Cheers ❤️
New-ish to your channel… really love your content. Thank you for all you share! I’m curious about your morning pages practice (love that you’ve chosen a writing time limit that works for you, btw!). Do you do your pages flip on waking? Upon entering the studio? Some other random time? Curious because I often talk myself out of it if it’s not first thing…I really do let perfectionism get the better of me sometimes 😂
Natalie Merchant wrote a song called Sister Tilly dedicated to Joan Didion on her new album. I love peeks inside your notebooks and I love your art style. 😍🎨 Thanks for sharing insights into your art process and notebooks! I've been into a big sketchbook. It's an inexpensive Peter Pauper Press Hardbound Sketchbook. I wish the pages were a brighter white, and still it's great to feel freedom to have an inexpensive journal to make a creative mess in. Although I still get detailed. I'm trying to loosen up in my art process a bit more. Love your channel! Feel free to check mine out if you're called to! I've been posting more on Instagram than RUclips this month so far. I haven't put a sketchbook or art journal flip on RUclips yet this year.

i just did a cleaning and found 2 journals unused, thank you. I definitely learned so much from you! The poem was so fitting.
Thank you for reminding me I have not journaled for a few days! I love keeping a journal and sketchbooks.
Thank you for sharing your process and delicious art! I love seeing your creativity, and can not wait to see what you make in 2024!
Thank you so much! 🥰

I love this video!!!! Maybe I will make a video to share my notebooks as well 🤔
do it, do it!!
Oooooooh....cannot wait to see inside of that red sketchbook❣️😍 Waiting patiently. 😉
🥰
I have kept journals in the past but haven lately. Definitely feel the need to write lately, especially being cooped up inside. Thanks for sharing! ❤
Ooooh yes its always nice to get out of your own head! Thanks Whitney!!

Oooh cool!! Keeping a sketchbook can be a battle and I know many prolific amazing artists who don’t use one at all!
Dropped everything to watch Chris! Thank you 🤭
aww yay, thank you!!
Hi Chris, im Ana Cristina. Love your video, ur inspired me to use my noteboooks !!
aw yay! Thank you!

I love that! Memories are so important, and its so fun to look back on what happened!
this is wonderful, I love seeing your process 😊😊
I'm so glad! Thank you!
this is such a sweet video ❤
thank you !
loved this video!
I'm so glad! Thank you!
Omg I totally recognize some places in this bid! Hi!
aww I love that!!
thank you sm for this video 💜 I needed the inspiration to get up and grab my notebook
This was great. Thanks for sharing your notebooks with us.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love your videos, thank you, have a good day!

I have great admiration for your ability to do morning pages in an un-lined space. I started making my way through the Artist Way in October and finally putting the work to practice in a lined moleskine I got for the holidays!
Love those daily doodles! Thanks for doing this tour! Super inspiring :)
Aww yay, thanks Mel!!
Keep sharing….insightful content ❤
Great video! Looking forward to your next sketchbook tour ❤
So well edited and presented! Thanks for sharing! I love the Midori Cotton MD and Moleskine sketchbooks, but it takes me forever to complete cause like you said, they feel more luxurious. I use the CROQUIS sketchbook for actual sketches! ❤
Thanks Benjamin! I've never heard of the CROQUIS sketchbok!! I'll have to check it out. The Midori MD books are such good sketchbooks too!
I have so many notebooks with 1 page started and then abandoned lol😝
hahah me too!

I start notebooks and then misplace them!
Also if you keep notebooks and have kids, you will be the source of a lot of hilarity when they inevitably find them!
Hahah happens to me too!
Awesome 😊
Thanks 🤗

Oh awesome!! I haven’t heard of that one but I’ll have to check it out!
