Oh my god, I almost cried...it was hurting so bad, watching you, taking the hardcover off.....🤣 I´m a Leuchtturm fan, been using them for 10 years for bullett journeling and journeling. I always find them cheap, for like 6/7 Euro at Tk Maxx. ALWAYS buy hardcovers... I love looking at them standing in my shelf, with the year sticker on them. I do love the Midori MD paper and I'll fight you to the death saying it's better than the Leuchturm! 😛 I'm not exactly a notebook snob per se but I do dislike Moleskine for their rubbish paper - even Extra Fine fountain pens bleed through! My preference in order: Midori, Tomoe River, Clairefontaine, Leuchturm.

Hi Martin, I have to say that I was slightly aghast when I realized that you were going to take the cover off the Leuchtturm, but as another roterfaden user I get it. I tend to use slimmer notebooks in my roterfaden, usually a muji A5 or a Stalogy half year. If you want the chunky notebook without the cover I would like to suggest replacing the endpapers with a light cardstock, maybe of the same weight as the roterfaden calendar. Replacing the endpapers is an easy process and I'm sure there are many tutorials on youtube. Really enjoyed the video!
Hi. I'll check out the notebooks you mention: I'm thinking of doing some reviews. I do really like the slimness of Moleskine soft covers. Glad you liked the video! Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 🙏
I have definitely done this before. Agree about the ribbons - first thing I always do with any notebook is rip out the ribbons. They are always lumpy and in the way. What I am finding is that I use a paper republic cover which is a round braided elastic and it is cutting into the binding. So I thing I am going to start skinning them in a light cover stock with a binding tape (like the white one you showed). Then better for archiving too. But for morning pages I really like the Moleskine folios that are dotted. Love dotted.
oh I love this thank you! I also use a leather "travelers" style notebook that I made for A5 inserts. I like Leuchtturm for the obvious reason that it's good paper but also because I can get them locally very easily. I prefer the soft cover because it makes more sense as an insert but it has far fewer pages than the hardback and as far as I know they also don't have a 120gsm option with the soft cover/paperback/whatever you want to call it.
I’ve done the same thing to some of my hardcovers too, people complaining need to understand it’s only a notebook and we gotta do what works best for the person using it . After taking the hard cover off I normally use some pritt stick and glue a sheet of manilla paper around the whole of the outside of the book .

I was only yelling that the signatures should be taken apart. Destruction? No.. I was licking my chops at the prospect of watching a complete disassembly. I want to try this and turn the cover into a refillable notebook using the liberated signatures from the book block, and eventually whatever else I can get my inky fingers on paperwise. I have a leuchtturm with my name embossed, so I refuse to ever let that go. I've liberated several book covers for repurposing but I would like to know.. do I need a dry run with another leuchtturm before tackling mine..? tfs.. really appreciated this.
I actually found it quite easy. There was some paper left on the notebook binding, but that could be removed. I'd say just be careful to not cut the strings in the binding or the pages might fall apart. The cover came off pretty cleanly.
"Some people might actually be shouting at the screen ..." ?? Are you kidding??? Yikes! My jaw dropped in horror and I nearly passed out watching you tear into that beautiful notebook! But, Then, I took a calming breath, and started to imagine what I could do to cover the raw, ragged, furry spine with a beautiful paper or something. I will re think... first time watching your video and I specifically click because I saw what you were planning to do in the thumb nail and I only have one question why not buy a soft cover?????
Because when I was doing this I was trying the bullet journal method, a key part of which is migrating stuff from one notebook to another. Leuchtturm only do soft cover notebooks in something like 120 pages, which would make migration frequent, and I couldn't be bothered with that, hence removing the cover from this one. I'm still using it, and it works well! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏

Yes, but when I made this I was trying the bullet journal method and didn't want to have to migrate everything very frequently; Leuchtturm soft covers are only slim. I am going to try one next, though. Besides, who doesn't enjoy a bit of pointless destruction?! 😄
True true, pointless destruction is always a plus! But you know what, looking at the way the binding is on the hardcover (once it's removed), it seems like it actually lies a bit more flat than the soft cover Leuchtturm when open. @@sketchley
When I made this I was trying the bullet journal technique and didn't want to have to migrate everything very often. I don't do that any more so will try a Leuchtturm soft cover soon (they're only available in slim profile). Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 🙏
Thanks! I don't know about fountain inks: I don't use fountain pens (yet...). My handwriting is terrible - it is that a story I'm perpetuating from primary schools teachers' comments? 🤔 Check out my Roterfaden video: their paper is very nice, despite what a lot of people seem to say.
Naked leuchchturm… oh Martin that’s brave pulling off cover.. I’ve made my own hardback books. Not as difficult as you think. Got a kit from company in England. You could make your own inserts?
When I made this I was trying the bullet journal method and didn't want to migrate my stuff frequently, hence I wanted the greater page count of the hardcovers: soft covers are only available in slimmer volumes. Oh, okay. I hear you. Yeah, isn't it odd that the Leuchtturm softcover journals have fewer pages? I can usually fit six months in a LT 1917 hardcover journal. It's easier to find things if I just have two journals per year as opposed to three or four journals.
@@RosieRealmenteYT I recently got a job and a lot has changed - you'll know if you've seen my recent videos. I still do morning pages but not as much - maybe three to four days a week. My favourite journal at the moment is a Traveler's Notebook, which I'm using for my evening check-in.
Watching you deconstruct this notebook rattled my adenoids and made my teeth itch. However, one of my biggest challenges to journalling has been the fear of messing up a beautiful new notebook. Being intimidated by all that blank paper. assuming my thoughts must be perfectly addressed, contained, legible, etc. So, breaking in a notebook, by breaking it, is very appealing to me. Thanks for sharing!
Hi there. Then you have identified something that has been holding you back, preventing you from being free on the page. Why does this fear of "messing up a beautiful new notebook" exist? Identify *that* and you may be well on the way to making the most of those pages. I don't like wasting space. But I recognise that is because of my upbringing. I now allow myself to use as much space as I need. Free yourself from self-imposed constraints. How to disrespect the efforts of a lot of people in order to design and make a perfectly beautiful notebook just because "I just don't care whatever anybody says and this is how I like it" I suppose you don't mind the same grade of disrespect on the stuff you might write, aren't you?
The variety of responses I get to this is fascinating. The notebook was designed to suit as many people as possible, for commercial reasons. It's a great notebook. I don't dispute that. I have many with the covers still on them! But in this particular case, the hard cover didn't suit me, so I removed it... Look out for more "I do this to my notebooks!" videos in future! Thanks for the video! Where did you get your leather notebook cover from pls?

What do you do with the covers? I know many people that would like them, Including myself. I make junk journals for people!
I just put them back on the books, but if you send me your address I'll post any I might have to you. Junk journals for others is a great gift! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏
THANK YOU
I have a leuchtturm 1917 I can't use, I don't like the cover's color but I had not realized I could just... remove it
Remove it! Remove it!
@@sketchley I have not made my decision x) Also because I don't use it that much
Let me know what you decide...
"Some people might actually be shouting at the screen ..." ?? Are you kidding??? Yikes! My jaw dropped in horror and I nearly passed out watching you tear into that beautiful notebook!
But,
Then,
I took a calming breath, and started to imagine what I could do to cover the raw, ragged, furry spine with a beautiful paper or something. I will re think...

Hi! Where do you get those lovely leather covers?
www.roterfaden.de/en. I use mine every day for work now. Kind of wishing I had a larger size, either B5 or A4...
Good idea, but why does it take 12 minutes to share it?
Mid-roll ads.
Nice info. 👍
Thanks 👍
It’s not the distruction i dislike lol its the unfinished spine that upsets me lol. Think id stick some tape down that :)
It's not ideal, I agree... 😄 Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Let me know if you'd like to see anything else! 🙏
where’s your pen case/holder from?
The blue one? That was a freebie from Roterfaden when I bought the Tachenbegthingie...
@@sketchley aha!! Then I must buy one too 🤣
Expensive pen holder, though. Keep watching and commenting and I may send you mine...
What's the black leather cover you use?

You say you are not an artist, but I disagree. I found your sketchnote pages to be very pleasing to the eye, and something I ASPIRE to! lol. Nice review of notebooks. Bleeding and ghosting annoys me no end, and I am still looking for the solution. I find it odd that there are not more sources for fine paper products...
Thank you! Where are you in the world? If you're in the UK you could always try The Journal Shop online.
I love it!! Have you tried an A5 stalogy? The paper is thinner but hold all kinda of inks well. And it’s soft bound like the moleskine.
Not yet! Thanks for the tip -- I'll take a look! 🙏 Thanks for watching, I do subscribe if you haven't already: more to come! 👍
@@sketchley I second this! Except the grid is slightly smaller, so depends on how big your handwriting is.
Can you get dotted stalogy?
first time watching your video and I specifically click because I saw what you were planning to do in the thumb nail and I only have one question why not buy a soft cover?????
Because when I was doing this I was trying the bullet journal method, a key part of which is migrating stuff from one notebook to another. Leuchtturm only do soft cover notebooks in something like 120 pages, which would make migration frequent, and I couldn't be bothered with that, hence removing the cover from this one. I'm still using it, and it works well! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏
Please use a sharper knife next time. That gave me anxiety watching you struggle.
Thanks for your concern, for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 🙏
Relax.
Why not try the soft cover version so you don't have to remove the cover?
When I was doing this I was trying the bullet journal method and didn't want to have to migrate stuff frequently: the soft cover versions only have 120 pages (or something like that). My brother in Christ, Leuchttrum makes soft cover notebooks like the Midori Lolol.
@@sketchley
We need to send this to Leuchtturm. Maybe they we see some of us want a soft cover version.❤
Good call! Send them an email!
Why not try a soft cover Leuchtturm? But this works as well…
When I made this I was trying the bullet journal technique and didn't want to have to migrate everything very often. I don't do that any more so will try a Leuchtturm soft cover soon (they're only available in slim profile). Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 🙏
Paper Republic create notebooks specifically for this kind of use.
Thanks! I'll check them out. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏
This is awesome!!! All you have to do now is secure the spine like Midori does. How is this paper with fountain inks?
Thanks! I don't know about fountain inks: I don't use fountain pens (yet...). My handwriting is terrible - it is that a story I'm perpetuating from primary schools teachers' comments? 🤔 Check out my Roterfaden video: their paper is very nice, despite what a lot of people seem to say.
That was cool
Glad you enjoyed it!
OK! I am going to try this. I am a little bit afraid.
Be careful. If you're not sure you can do it, ask an adult to help you...
@@sketchley vor works good BUT the 200 pages Bullet Journal by Leuchtturm 1917 is too thick for my leather portfolio.
why not just remove a few of the signatures from the book block - you can always use then separately.
@@MoniTablet-gm8qf you mean, remove some pages? Sound hard to me, cause all pages are bounded.
That is savage. Haha. I love it.
Thanks! 🙏
After my initial EEEEEEEEEEEK NOOOO!!!! I appreciated seeing the stitching of the book.

@@sketchley I feel ya. I've been using the old 3-ringers just so I can put whatever paper and canvases I feel like playing with in them.
Naked leuchchturm… oh Martin that’s brave pulling off cover.. I’ve made my own hardback books. Not as difficult as you think. Got a kit from company in England. You could make your own inserts?
I might look into it!
this is exactly what I want to do with Leuchtturm notebooks haha
Wait. Why do you rip off the hardcovers again? (I could hear the covers screaming out loud in pain.) Why not just get a softcover version?
When I made this I was trying the bullet journal method and didn't want to migrate my stuff frequently, hence I wanted the greater page count of the hardcovers: soft covers are only available in slimmer volumes. Not sure I'll be using Leuchtturm any more anyway. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 🙏
Oh, okay.
What is your pencil case?
It came free from Roterfaden with the notebook cover.
Hi, what don’t you like about their design? Is it the physical aspect or the design of what is printed on the paper?
I need minimum 100gsm, or Hobonichi paper.

Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏
@sketchley sorry if I offended you. It wasn't my intention. It's your stuff and you can do whatever you want with it. But it's painful to watch.
No offence taken! It's your right to comment - and thank you for doing so!
How did he disrespect anyone? Do you the the makers care if he takes his cover off? Hell no. They care that he bought it and they might care that he's now enjoying it.
Hey..............JUST BUY PAPER!!!!! what;s wrong with you
No. Never. 😁

I'm sorry, but this is terrible to watch. I'm a huge sketchbook fan, and it kind of physically hurts to watch this. I mean it's your sketchbook and you do whatever you want to do with them, but it just looks like a waste of material. I'm sure there would be other options than destroying a new sketchbook. But again, it's your stuff, so you can do what you want.
I take your point. Think of it as customisation. As it was, it didn't suit my needs, so I adapted it.
@@sketchley Yeah, I understand that. It's a little unconventional way, but if the result works for you, then it serves the purpuse.
