This is the most wonderful tribute to Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. We, the French, are sooooo proud of him !
This is SUCH an unusual riff. It has a hypnotic effect like no other: it never seems to commit to any major or minor: Towards the end it ends up in a cyclic, revolving riff that sticks in your head forever and feels other worldly. If you took away all the known part of the Pixies you could not find in all the parts that which makes for it's unusual and uncanny nature which seems to come from beyond.
At 1:35, when that synth drops in, this song leaves earth. And it dissapears between the stars with those 'Oh Alexander, I see you beneath the archway of aerodynamics'-lyrics. Thanks Frank, I don't need a UFO with this song. ;-)

One of the great Pixies songs. But I’ll never understand how it became a single with a video. Earth People will never understand why “Oh, Alexander…I see you beneath the archway of aerodynamics” is or should be anthemic.

always thought that when i played it in hoboken ~ 1997-9 always there would always be a guy, not same one, and they’d all jam at at this one. it’s a quick ride too like The song is real fast too. it’s not an ideal headbang but it deserves something w kicks and hairspray. ❤

The very first time I heard that song was on the radio. I recognised Pixies immediately and told myself : "wow, they've got a syntethiser now !". My favourite song of the band.

I like this song because it doesn't know whether it's going to heaven or hell. That's why it never commits to minor or major chords, only a hypnotic and ethereal churn of lustful confusion, which is why we love the pixies and LSD.

I see this as basically the purest Pixies song, in terms of the classic LOUDquietLOUD dynamic, and the verses being the loud bit and the choruses being the quiet bit, and then just lyrically and musically it's amazing. Trompe le Monde is sooooo underrated
