Now it has even acquired a little academic character. All presets were, I think, made by professionals who know orchestration very well. For me, it's incredible that I can learn this even better now. I always had problems with placing the violas correctly because of the notation. Now you can see all that beautifully. And not only that, you now have the option to create a simple initial mockup for the sound you need. A big praise to EastWest!!!!

  • @tommcwilliams3911

Couldn't get this to work in logic pro the exact same way. I came up with my own solution for anyone else having problems. This may work the same in other daws. Make your Opus player Multitimbral with 16 tracks. Once you create your arrangement on the main track with Orchestrator, play it all through once. Drag from the REC hand to the unused tracks. Mute your original clip so that it doesn't play next to it. This will break everything out the same way. Note: let's say if woodwinds only uses 3 out of 4 of it's slots, you'll have to move all of your midi tracks down one spot to compensate for the blank track (or anywhere else that there is a group with a no instrument slot), otherwise it throws everything off. If anyone knows how to do it another way in logic, please let me know. This takes about the same amount of time, except you'll have to adjust for blank slots like I said.

This is great, especially for having automatically the right instruments name.
I used to do the same midi drag&drop operation with The Orchestra by Sonuscore, but in that case you only get generic "Track1-2-3" names, so you have to scroll all the patches you used and copy the instrument/articulation name one by one, by hand.

I'm on Windows 10 and Reaper 7. I got this trick to work but...
The imported tracks don't sound. They need an instrument to be assigned to them manually.
Each track has a different channel.
I only use channel 1 because I only have one external device (my Arturia keyboard) and it sends on channel 1. It doesn't receive, so no problems there.

Ahah! I knew about the trick, but I didn't know about the change in preferences in Cubendo. I haven't only just updated to Opus, so on a huge learning curve. Ta much!
I have also just noticed something. If you recorded yesterday then open up. Before you can import the midi tracks, you have to play through the entire piece (or perhaps just the section). Opus isn't a recorder, so it doesn't remember what happened after it is shut down. I suppose it just holds it in temporary memory. It makes sense, otherwise it wouldn't be able to resolve any changes you make. This might mean that if you edit, the same thing applies - you must play through the section if you are going to re-import. Would be interested to know what you find.

Thank you that's amazing man! I know this video is at least a year old but how do you manage to have the colours when you import the tracks. On my daw it just keep the same colour for each track.
Also, on the left board I have to change manually each time the midi option to put it on opus instead of the by default midi setting.
Is there a way to change that?

If you use cubase you can set in preferences what colors should be used. I've noticed that sometimes the midi channels don't behave correctly. I don't know if there's a way to change it I'm afraid

@@SecondTierSound thank you for your response. it is definitely on Cubase side not opus I think. It is a very great trick for templates with a certain texture. I use cubase 10. Do you use a more recent one on your video?

I always update cubase, but I'm not sure which version this is. Probably more recent, but it shouldn't make a difference in this care I think. Perhaps.

Ableton Live 10 checking in. It exports all the clips to blank midi tracks, but the clips are all named correctly like in the video. I'm not sure if it's me, but when using the orchestrator ensemble patches the expression control doesn't do anything. CC1 works fines, and maybe it's some deep setting I don't have set up properly, but I was thinking this feature might be a way to work around that. Regardless, this will be great for layering string shorts and such with other libraries.

I can't figure out how to set the MIDI INPUT function in Logic Pro. This has been a problem every time I try to drag the MIDI of Opus. It doesn't create more Opus tracks. Where is this function in Logic?

  • @dr.gregoryf.maassen2637

Hi Sam, I tried your technique with Ableton Live Suite. When you drag the recording, midi tracks are opened, but the sounds are not loaded. I contacted East West to tell me how to use the copy and drag function. This is their response: "There's not any specific manual on using it in Ableton - the Orchestrator midi drag/drop does just copy midi data over - you would need to load up instruments on those additional tracks to then be able to have sounds playing on the exported midi tracks though." Perhaps I am missing something. I do get the MIDI, but no sound. Thanks for your wonderful RUclips Channel,

I’m having a major issue with this and I’m not seeing anyone else having it.
I let my entire 2 minute track play out in cubase and I’m following everything from this video, but when I drag the midi from Opus, it’s only recorded like 30 seconds of the actual orchestrator midi and has cut off at a random point in the orchestrator recording as if I’d stopped and started recording. I have no idea what’s doing this because I’m following everything else perfectly fine, it just doesn’t drag over the midi of the entire track

Excellent tip, thank you! But...I didn't succeed in making it work yet. I did exactly what you showed in the video, my DAW is CUBASE 11, and I even used the same Orchestrator Score as you. But when dragging the REC hand into Cubase, all the MIDI tracks are generated, their outputs are correctly set to Opus, their names are correct, but they are just empty parts with no MIDI notes in them, and the parts are much shorter than the Opus part I recorded. Am I missing something in the setup?

Did you play through the track first? I think Opus needs at least one one through of hte instrument track to "hear" it and record it, then export. It can be a bit fiddly, I had a track on loop and it gave me multiple takes when the MIDI is exported (which would be logical). Sometimes I did not let the track run and got short tracks. I am still fathoming the correct method

@ this is true, a way to drag and make logic assign the same instruments as the orchestrator may have to do with multiple outputs, the midi track settings, or that you just drag in a blank page. I didn’t try this. Honestly i find the export thing just very cool, but if your template is tight you will use the orchestrator more as a single track i guess , otherwise it makes the composing rigid, because 8 measures later you need something different no? unless you are composing for stock libraries….and even though….

    • @SecondTierSound

The problem is that logic loads its own sampler automatically for imported midi tracks. Try holding command while you drag the files. But I would ask customer support if there is a way of disabling the sampler on midi tracks by default.

@@tomdavis9696 I have to admit I'm no expert on dorico. But make sure that you have setup the dynamics correctly. Most patches in Opus are controlling the dynamics by CC11, not CC1.
You also have to create your own expression maps in order to get all the sounds out of the expressions, then create a setup in opus that corresponds to that map. My video on how to create expression maps in cubase, might be helpful there.
I hope you figure it out. Maybe someone has already created expressions maps for opus in dorico?
      Cheers!
