do you prefer the live musical or the first film adaptation, this version was created as a tv film but the first was a original movie based on the Broadway act, that's why they had the same characters
I believe this remake of the original musical classic is truly a magical, musical classic with its amazing, incredible music, especially its songs, like "76 Trombones" and "'Till There Was You".
@@spencerbeard7490 Truly! They quartet and Marian were strolling down the street singing two different songs at once and a horse and carriage came clopping by... It was absolutely "magical." ❤ I wish I could go there in a time machine.
Of two minds; the original Hill had a sleazy quality of a slightly older, traveling con man that is missing in this presentation. Obviously, MB is very talented, but for my taste (although nobody called me for advice), he's just too, too clean cut and nice. The sprinkling of black characters, a gesture of fairness, falls flat and underscores the little role played by blacks in small Iowa towns of this period.
Clayton Riisoe ... I agree the 1st one from 1962 was the best. But let's face it the top 3 persons in this film had big shoes to fill... Robert Preston and of course Shirley Jones and a Young Ron Howard. One good thing the as close to the original film as possible.
Well I tried getting through this but just couldn't do it. I watched the first train scene and realized it wasn't going well. Not only did they change the words but they messed up the cadence. Then when mb attempted Trouble, it just took a big turn for the worse. It's even worse than the butchering of Miracle on 34th street with what's his name from Will and Grace
I have the 1962 movie version on my regular viewing rotation. I've been in love with Shirley Jones for nearly 50 years. When this version came out, I didn't even give it a chance. But now, over 15 years later, I've watched it with a less prejudiced perspective and find it ultimately satisfying and emotional, especially at the end. The producers made numerous fundamental story changes which have effectively separated this fine adaptation from its incomparable predecessor with grace, style and finesse. I Thank You for putting this out for viewing.
I admire your ability to express those thoughts so well. I did miss the song "Being in Love" although "My White Knight" was a fine alternative. I thought Kristin was amazing but I really thought "Zaneeta" was so dead on, I couldn't believe it!!!
I absolutely loved this remake! Matthew Broderick is fantastic as Harold Hill. Kristin Chenoweth is lovely as Marian Paroo. Victor Garber is great as Mayor Shinn. Molly Shannon as Mrs. Shinn was a delight.
I know I’m late but I heard from the Musical just the day when I decided to see Hugh Jackman on Broadway at the beginning of 2020. Now its 2022 and I’m still a proud ticket holder but hadn’t the chance to travel from Germany to New York through all the Covid restrictions and all. In preparation I watched the original movie with Preston / Jones and was so impressed…What a wonderful story with great actors and cheerful lovely music. I wasn’t familiar with any of that, but I was especially impressed by Robert. He was so charismatic, cheerful, loud, and convincing that it’s impossible for anybody not to find him absolutely credible as a salesman and as an actor of a salesman. I found it a wonderful classy musical film made in 1962 a period which I love to see movies because I’m a massive Elvis fan. (He’d had been a wonderful Harold Hill, too) And then I found out about the 2003 adaption off the musical movie. I decided to watch it not caring very much which actors would have been in the cast. While the train scene at the beginning was rolling, I recognized this cigar smoking man who was just seen from nose to chin…This lips which holding this cigar looked quite familiar to me…. And wow how cool was that when I was finally recognizing that Matthew Broderick was giving the MM. It’s so amazing what authenticity he gives to the role of Harold. I was really amazed how different the Harold can be taken and how good both can be in their own way. The Harold of Matthew was smooth, sweet, and cheeky. It is the perfect version for television because you see his cute doe eyes, pouty lips in every close up and hear his mesmerizing voice. He shows a totally different way of salesmanship, subtle and charming.... less obvious than Preston’s way but soooo convincing to me. His uhhh and ahhs while praising Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn’s raising of her feet are priceless to me. I love that Matthew gives Harold a bit of his own personality and interpretation. I was surprised of his beautiful soft singing voice because I never saw him as a Broadway actor… This very many tongue twisters he did with perfection and facility as much as he does dance ….I simply loved to see him dancing and singing through the story…especially the dance with Marian during Social Ball rehearsals, the dance in the library and the dance between Marcellus Washburn and him during the cheerful ‘The sadder but wiser girl for me’ song. Almost unbelievable he was born at the time the original film was made and is only 3 years younger than Robert when he did his movie. To make a long story short, for me both version are very good material to get prepared for this beautiful stage play I never knew before… I partly understand why some of you criticise Matthew’s performance because he is absolutely no Robert. But he didn’t have to for me. He gives Harold his touch and I love it. And of course I adore Victor Garber and Molly Shannon together…Hilarious… Thank you Robert and Matthew for giving me the Music Man. Now I’m ready for Broadway and can’t wait for Hugh Jackman ermm Harold Hill rocking River City. THANK YOU @Andre Morais for bring this here on youtube.
This show means litaraly everything to me it was the first musical I was ever apart of and it really kicked off my life long love of theater and it warms my heart to think about the memories of putting on this production even though it's been since 6th grade it feels like yesterday
Matthew sure needed more recognition for this movie...a wonderful performance...and I am just finding out about it, 20 years later(?) sigh. I do believe Matthew is certainly more a musician than an actor; as I see him always shine out the most in his talents when he's singing and dancing. I also love the arrangement of the dancers and singers in this movie; and oh my, who designed the costumes "superb" indeed.
One of my favorite musicals. My high school had auditions for the Sound of Music this weekend and I'm watching every musical I can find until tomorrow when we find out our roles. So far I've watched My Fair Lady, and I'm twenty minutes into this one
Been watching this movie for years and took me until today to feel that soul crushing passion that Marian and Harold have for each other. The footbridge scene literally makes me cry everytime because Marian looks so in love and Harold looks like he doesn't know how to handle it. :')
I don't know how I missed this in 2003, I consider myself a bona fide musical theatre man...anyhow...this was delightful. I really really enjoyed it. I loved how the town was filled with African Americans and it was just no big deal. Of course, that was not the reality but the world should have been. Christine was fabulous. Wow...and the direction. Great Job!!!
It was a television movie, so if you weren't watching TV then, and paying attention to what was about to air, then you wouldn't have known, as many of us didn't.
First number with the salesmen in the train, is one of the best patter numbers written. Right up there with similar style numbers in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady.

I have done this play 3 times!! I know this by heart! I played Miss Marian(school),alma hix(localJRtheater), and Gracie Shinn(my local collage) I have many fond memories with is show!❤️❤️🎭
You mean like the age difference of Marian and Harold? If I could criticize the original at all, I would say (and I've always thought) that Robert Preston seemed a bit old for innocent Marian. He was 16 years older in real life but seemed more then 20 years older. IOW, old enough to be her father. Not really, what I would call, a "Hollywood dream couple."
i’m from the town this musical originated from, and i love seeing every musical and movie of it, because they’re all so different and the same in every way!
I think you did a wonderful job on the video. I am actually very surprised that the full movie is up on You Tube, Usually you don't get a full older movie like this on YT, so thanks so much for posting it. My question is though that you have listed Cameron Monaghan as Winthrop Paroo. I thought that I had read that little Ronnie Howard played that part? I know it sounds crazy but I only want to watch the movie if he is in it. So I am just wondering if that was a typo or if I was misled with the info. that I read. Thanks again.
I C, thanks for getting back to me on that, I just discovered the movie the night I first commented so I didn't realize there was a second version. I did find the one with Ronnie Howard but I will view your too. Thanks again
Obviously, a lot of effort went into the making of this musical and I found it enjoyable, the barbershop singing very good, dare I say nearly as good as The Buffalo Bills? The original is a hard act to follow but I think this is a brave, worthy remake
Did you even see the guy that they cast to play Hill, WTF pathetic does not even begin to come close to describing his performance (WAY too soft spoken and not nearly pushy nor slippery enough). Admittedly they were never going to match Robert Preston but that was no excuse. I mean if they had tried and failed I could understand and even accept, but they didn't even try. Hell they didn't even try to try!!!

I enjoyed the remake of the movie. The casting is brilliant. Of course you can not replace Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. They are iconic. Amaryllis and Winthrop really shined. I believe they have bigger careers ahead of them.
Poor and injusticed Barbara Cook here. Everybody remembers Shirley Jones and forgets Cook who introduced the role of Marian and all the songs .Cheno sang here. Shirley Jones didnt sing My White knight like did both Barbara and Chenoweth. She sang other song named Being in love in the movie.
Jeff Brunker dont forget Barbara Cook who introduced the role of Marian with Preston and that she only didnt make the movie because Jack Warner wanted a big star to sell the movie so Meredith Willson had to choose between Preston and Barbara Cook and as he wouldnt have made the movie without Preston Shirley Jones was cast after Willson rejected Jean Simmons because he wanted a soprano who could dance as Marian. .Both Preston and Cook received the Tony Award but neither him not Shirley were nominated for an Oscar but the film was nominated and received one award Best Adapted Musical score.

his performance is so stiff. just compare to robert preston. robert actually sounds like a salesman.

When you realize Winthrop will grow up to be a Jedi.
Lol nice
When you realize Winthrop will grow up being Ian Gallagher from Shameless
Peyton Watson When you realize Winthrop with grow up to be a serial killer and criminal minds and later the joker on Gotham
@@abigailcurry4622 They got trouble right there in Gotham City!
When you realize Winthrop is Tom Riddle.
I'm going to watch The Music Man this Friday at my towns high school
Kristen Chenowith's singing blew me away from the very first notes! And Matthew Broderick is amazingly expressive and captivating in his performance!
The 1962 version is one of my favorite movies ever
This is pretty nice though.
I believe this remake of the original musical classic is truly a magical, musical classic with its amazing, incredible music, especially its songs, like "76 Trombones" and "'Till There Was You".
I thought Lida Rose/Will I Ever Tell You (superimposed) was about the coolest thing I'd ever heard. M. Wilson was brilliant.
@@ThePianoMan1953 It is indeed. Quite romantic also.
@@spencerbeard7490 Truly! They quartet and Marian were strolling down the street singing two different songs at once and a horse and carriage came clopping by... It was absolutely "magical." ❤ I wish I could go there in a time machine.
I like the original a bit more, but this has it's own appeal, and a great cast! Thx for the upload.
Y’all don’t know crap
Watching in 2023! I've never seen this version, and it's phenomenal! Thanks for sharing🥁🎺🎷🎵
I second your emotion re Shirley Jones! And I'm 68. She's still think one of my feminine ideals.
I admire your ability to express those thoughts so well. I did miss the song "Being in Love" although "My White Knight" was a fine alternative. I thought Kristin was amazing but I really thought "Zaneeta" was so dead on, I couldn't believe it!!!
Very well said! I, too, love the original Preston/Jones version, but this one's growing on me.
I absolutely loved this remake! Matthew Broderick is fantastic as Harold Hill. Kristin Chenoweth is lovely as Marian Paroo. Victor Garber is great as Mayor Shinn. Molly Shannon as Mrs. Shinn was a delight.
Apparently (and am just making an informed guess here folks) apparently, he doesn't know the territory!
Doesn't know the territory?! What's his line?! What's his line?!
Lydia Allen no it's NERF OR NOTHING
ben ferguson they remade Annie and that was a classic
hey this one is better!!!
+Trina Oliver I dont think so but then I am old. Robert Preston was incomparable. What do you think of 'Victor Victoria'? Curious.
My favorite music class assignment ever even though it took two hours.
I had to watch this in 3rd grade
So we have Ferris Bueller hooking up with Glinda? Never thought I'd say that in my life
That voice did sound familiar thanks for reminding me
Or you could say Inspecter Gadget and Cunnagonda (Candide).
It’s Galinda with a “guh “
@@bmcfad12 Ok, Ok. I never thought I’d see Ferris Bueller hooking up with *Galinda* .
I almost cried when THE BAND finally played!
What a POWERFUL MUSICAL,
Its my SHIPOOPIE ,,,,,,,
Why now that we have abundant supplies of toilet paper again I can sing this song with gusto,
I love the mop at the end...Matthew Broderick really cracks me up haha
(He’d had been a wonderful Harold Hill, too)
And then I found out about the 2003 adaption off the musical movie.
To make a long story short, for me both version are very good material to get prepared for this beautiful stage play I never knew before…
I partly understand why some of you criticise Matthew’s performance because he is absolutely no Robert. But he didn’t have to for me. He gives Harold his touch and I love it. And of course I adore Victor Garber and Molly Shannon together…Hilarious…
Thank you Robert and Matthew for giving me the Music Man. Now I’m ready for Broadway and can’t wait for Hugh Jackman ermm Harold Hill rocking River City.
THANK YOU @Andre Morais for bring this here on youtube.
A lot of these songs are tongue twisters - Broderick handles that masterfully.
This show means litaraly everything to me it was the first musical I was ever apart of and it really kicked off my life long love of theater and it warms my heart to think about the memories of putting on this production even though it's been since 6th grade it feels like yesterday
If he couldn't teach a marching band, he should definitely take up teaching a choir. Just saying. Splendid movie!
This is awful.
I'm in it... how dare you?
@@fjccommish it great!!!
Teach a choir? You do realise they are actors? They are "acting"? In reality it's all made from starched shirts, balloons and sticky tape.
Couldn't teach a choir either you have to read music which he can't do
Matthew sure needed more recognition for this movie...a wonderful performance...and I am just finding out about it, 20 years later(?) sigh. I do believe Matthew is certainly more a musician than an actor; as I see him always shine out the most in his talents when he's singing and dancing. I also love the arrangement of the dancers and singers in this movie; and oh my, who designed the costumes "superb" indeed.
And anybody who's anybody KNOWS that ya gotta know the territory
I'm watching this in 2017, I think it's a amazing movie.
Watching in 2019
in 2020 :)
One of my favorite musicals. My high school had auditions for the Sound of Music this weekend and I'm watching every musical I can find until tomorrow when we find out our roles. So far I've watched My Fair Lady, and I'm twenty minutes into this one
That's cool. I'm doing this at my school and got Amaryllis
+Ali Joyce Mr. Russionello (Mr. Russ) why?
+Ali Joyce That's soo cool!😂😂😱😱
Davis high school?
we just had our closing night of sound of music (I was Liesl) and they announced that we would be doing music man next year!
Been watching this movie for years and took me until today to feel that soul crushing passion that Marian and Harold have for each other. The footbridge scene literally makes me cry everytime because Marian looks so in love and Harold looks like he doesn't know how to handle it. :')
i love his musical and we are doing it for a school play! i'm marian and i'm so excitied!!
I just saw a high school play of it today ^^
Lucky I'm just a kid in it😢😢😢😢😢
I'm Winthrop lol it's "tho" fun!!
and I'm just a random salesman on the train...
Melody Wizz lolz
Ohhhhh thank you for even adding the chapters! I can back up to my favorite scenes!
This would be the kind of Iowa that gave us Duke Slater. Look him up, and you'll smile a bit to yourself.
It was a television movie, so if you weren't watching TV then, and paying attention to what was about to air, then you wouldn't have known, as many of us didn't.
I liked that too, lots of black people among the townspeople and there was no huge fuss about it.
50 years since my high school did this musical. Great music and even better memories….
The more I watch this version, the more I'm falling in love with this version! It's slick and well-done!
It grows on you in a hurry. Especially the beauty of Kristin Chenowith. (for me)
For some reason it cracks me up that a full hour and a half of the movie has been labeled "The Mayor"
we are doing this for our theatre performance and I am a Pick-A-Little Lady and its been soooooo much fun! I love this
KaelenVlogs Likewise. I was Maude.

The late great and lovable Gracie Allen said gossip just goes in one ear...
Loved this movie...actually brought me to tears with emotion. Now to watch the original. I never saw the Music Man!
Con Artist ... Hope you get to watch the original one. They both are good, I think yo6 might enjoy the one 1 watch when I was very young.
First number with the salesmen in the train, is one of the best patter numbers written. Right up there with similar style numbers in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady.
YesssssssssssssSir, YessssssssssssssSir!!
You were right, I dont know why this has dislikes. This is a full quality video and it's a very good movie.
I love this musical and this is a FANTASTIC movie. I especially like 76 trombones in this movie
One of my favorite musical! Such amazing music! So blessed and honored I was able to be in my schools production! MEREDITH WILSON IS AMAZING, AND NEEDS TO BE MORE APPRECIATED.
Who did you play
I absolutely love this! Thank you so much for uploading it! It really helps since I am in the music man play at my school❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hard to be believe the adorable little boy who played Winthrop in this film is the same guy who's now playing the Joker in Gotham, even as a child he was a really good actor.
I can remember when this premiered when I was 9. Still one of my favorite made-for-tv musicals :)
I love this musical. Both movie versions. It's just what the world needs.
Omg I didn’t know this existed! How much fun!!!!! :)
As someone who is a huuuuuuge fan of the original, I just want to say how much I do love and appreciate this version so very much! The same parts that always make me cry still did in this one… beautiful… thank you!
I agree with you completely. I remember the original but really love this.... it's like something beautiful with a fresh coat of paint. I thought Kristin was angelic!!! "Zaneta" was nothing short of adorable!! What a great performance by her.
I have done this play 3 times!! I know this by heart! I played Miss Marian(school),alma hix(localJRtheater), and Gracie Shinn(my local collage) I have many fond memories with is show!❤️❤️🎭
a perfect work of art. remedies all the defects of the original
The versatility of Matthew Broderick. Drama, humor, musical. He does it all. Big fan.
Original is the best but both versions are fun to watch. a great movie. thanks.
Love this musical movie plus the actors and actresses.
a very small and cute cameron monaghan!!
I’m so pleased to have found this classic family movie. Thank you for including it on RUclips.
I didn’t know this masterpiece was free on RUclips!
What a great movie in so many ways! I played in the pit orchestra in high school in 1973! Great play and great movie 🍿!!! 👍😃
i’m from the town this musical originated from, and i love seeing every musical and movie of it, because they’re all so different and the same in every way!
This musical makes me love River City (or Mason City)Iowa, and as a kid I fell in love with Shirley Jones. And have never been to Iowa yet.
Very faithful to the original. Thanks for uploading.
im watching this for a drama class so i can fit in with the theater kids
Me rn except I’m quite literally just required to watch this, and am just a backstage kid 😭
Van Johnson is my favourite ‘Music Man’ ; I listen to the original London cast recording constantly.
I love the music man
I'm 8 minutes into this and it is obvious that the age of Hollywood Musicals is long gone.
This movie requires more than 8 minutes to get into it: hang in there. :) It truly picks up quite well as it goes along. 🎼🎶😊
I love this musical! I was in a high school production, so much fun!!
I'm in a play for the music man that's y I'm waching It😃

Jetta Myllykangas yep I just performed it the other weekend
Thank you for uploading this!! Appreciate it so much!
I absolutely love Winthrop. Anyone else?
I think you did a wonderful job on the video. I am actually very surprised that the full movie is up on You Tube, Usually you don't get a full older movie like this on YT, so thanks so much for posting it. My question is though that you have listed Cameron Monaghan as Winthrop Paroo. I thought that I had read that little Ronnie Howard played that part? I know it sounds crazy but I only want to watch the movie if he is in it. So I am just wondering if that was a typo or if I was misled with the info. that I read. Thanks again.
This is the 2003 version, Where Cameron Monaghan played Winthrop.
Ronnie Howard played Winthrop back in 1962.
I C, thanks for getting back to me on that, I just discovered the movie the night I first commented so I didn't realize there was a second version. I did find the one with Ronnie Howard but I will view your too. Thanks again
BentleyTBT4 it's not the original it's the 2003 version look up music man1962 thats better
Ronnie(aka Opie) was in the earlier version with Shirley Jones.
I have the original music man on dvd, but I also really enjoy this one. This one just seems like a comfort movie.
I love this 2003 version of Music man. I wonder how the participants lives were enhanced as a results of this wonderful lively musical.
Not a one found it to be a career-booster.
They got paid and they probably had a good time making the movie, right?
Watching Clyde Alves (tommy) dance is my favorite part of this movie.
Never knew this was remade! Loved it! Didn’t know that in the 21 century there was a musical worth spit...
Yeah, the barbershop was terrific, though it's hard to top the Buffalo Bills.
@@lifeontheledgerlines8394 I thought they were brilliant. Loved Lida Rose/Will I Ever Tell You (superimposed) while the horse and buggy clopped by! That was the most magical moment in the "new" movie for me. "He'll Pop....... the question." Brilliant. But who was the pretty blonde (bride) in that hotel scene. She was amazing.
I love ❤ this movie 🎥 I love ❤ Matthew Broderick and Kristen Chenoweth and I think they did a wonderful job remaking an old classic musical.
I enjoyed the remake of the movie. The casting is brilliant. Of course you can not replace Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. They are iconic. Amaryllis and Winthrop really shined. I believe they have bigger careers ahead of them.
Poor and injusticed
Barbara Cook here.
@@dianaaljadeff2983 The only word for Barbara Cook, person, and voice, is- treasure.
Well, that's very bold...predicting that 15 YEARS(!) after this first aired...lol. The kid who played Winthrop did okay....he's a working actor with some nice credits. "Amaryllis", on the other hand, only had a small handful of credits and hasn't worked in ten years... As the late (SO great!) Meat Loaf almost said - one out of two ain't bad...
THIS IS MY FIRST TIME WATCHING THIS MOVIE THE MUSIC MAN
Love this movie! I had the extreme pleasure of performing in this show at the OAT in our State Park, over 20 years ago. My singing line was - “ and once I got some grapefruit from Tampa”
I was also had make up artist in this terrific show! What fun memories ! 🤩
I played Charlie Cowell and constable Locke in my local theatre's show, and got, "In March I got a grey Mackinaw!"
