  • Butler discusses his life in education which began with his childhood on a horse farm, then to formal degrees from some of the most recognized institutions in the United States, teaching in the higher education system and ultimately landed him on the high plains of Nebraska south of Chadron. Butler Professional Farrier School attracts students from across the United States and from several foreign countries.
As he's followed his dream of helping people help horses, Butler has learned that when you're true to yourself, your involvement in education reflects you and your values. Butler's childhood heroes were the singing cowboys Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. He adopted their "Cowboy Codes" as his own. In 1956 Butler's father arranged for him to go on cattle roundup in Arizona. From then on he wanted to be a real cowboy. One of the jobs a cowboy does is shoeing horses. To learn this skill he attended what was then the only course in America at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA. (Now there are 50). His desire to master the subject led him to teach courses with his mentor Ralph Hoover, write and publish textbooks, win competitions, and present adult education programs in 48 states and 10 countries.
He has earned a PhD, been an equine science faculty member at six universities and published a dozen books. He was selected as one of 51 teachers interviewed by Bill Smoot for his book Conversations with Great Teachers, published by Indiana University Press in 2010.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Thank you d. Butler for your constantly lifting our standards as farriers. Keeping blacksmithing, horseshoeing and what it means to be a farrier in mind, to improve how we as a people can help our worlds most noble animal happy and healthy. Horses are a wonderful animal, and you have greatly improved the awareness of what they need from us. Thank you doug for your lifes work, I would never be the farrier I am today without your teaching.

You spelled "pray" wrong. Should be "Prey"...
