I have to agree!! Wrestling this year has definitely increased a level with all the storytelling and production of all wrestlers either returning or just stepping up a notch!!
Although that may be why he has a lot 5 stars matches it also might be because will ospreay has a wrestling style that meshes well with a lot of other wrestling styles but that's just my take on it
Ospreay is amazing. Just watch him objectively and tell me in ring he isn’t the best inside the ropes that you’ve ever seen. There’s literally nothing that guy can’t do inside a wrestling ring. And if you want one of the best modern matches, and what a lot of pro wrestlers in AEW called the best match they’d ever seen, search RUclips for the match between Ospreay and Omega for “the US Japan-Something Title” (which I think is one of the 819 belts Tony’s brought into his company). Just bc AEW has terrible storylines doesn’t take away from their in ring brilliance or the fact that MJF is the one that got away from WWE. IMO he’s better in every way than Roman is apart from Roman’s incredible silent presence. MJF is a natural heel and his pipebomb makes Punk’s look like a sparkler compared to a nuke. There’s a reason those 3 are so over and why MJF went from first match ever in AEW at the premiere Double or Nothing to main event defending champion at Wembley, the largest crowd ever for AEW.
2023 basically surpassed 2019 in terms of how crazy it's been. It had everything I wanted. Ospreay vs Omega, Danielson vs ZSJ, and Naito vs Okada with Naito winning the G1 being the massive cherry on top.
Little nitpick on Omega v Osprey in forbidden door, and no disrespect or anything big fan of the work you guys put out and appreciate on what you do. That being said : HOW CAN YOU FORGET THE TIGER DRIVER 91?!?!?!
I saw Speedball in a tag with his IRL partner Veda Scott at an Indy here in Pittsburgh and even the people who didn’t know him could tell that he’s a step above. It was phenomenal
My first introduction to Katsuhiko Nakajima was when he went up against Takagi earlier this year in WK... and man, I have been a massive fan ever since. That dude deserves more recognition.
My favorite part about ko and Sami vs the USOs was during the pin they pointed the camera at ko and the look on his face. He looked so damn proud of what they just did. It was so great to see 4 well deserved performers in the main event of wrestlemania
My personal MOTY was ZSJ vs Danielson, but that's probably in part because I was live there for it. Hands down the best match I've ever seen live. And seeing Danielson and ZSJ put on that absolute in Danielson's hometown(ish) was electric.
To add a few matches I personally think deserve 5 stars, Dragunov/Dijak (NXT Battleground), one of the Hayes/Dragunov ppv duology, and MJF/Cole (All In)
Great year for wrestling, but I feel like too many got snubbed by the dreaded 4.75 rating. Those being rhea vs flair, Wes Lee vs dijack, Dragunov vs dijack, any of the three melo vs Dragunov, men’s iron survivor (got 4.5), Becky vs Tiffany at no mercy (got 4.5). Will Ospreay. "Superlative": Dictionary Definition. The form of an adjective or adverb that expresses that the thing or person being described has more of the particular quality than anything or anyone else of the same type.
@@kawaiipotetu4047Orton vs Triple H is the reason why I feel Match quality is just as important as storylines because while the storyline was great, the match itself was a straight up boring dumpster fire that made me fall asleep.
@@mrlaidback83 I agree. A match without a story will have a hard time getting me interested, unless it's some dream match as a special attraction. But on the other hand, the best story will leave a sour taste in your mouth, if the big match it had been building up to is a wet fart. Sting vs Hogan would be a prime example for this.
It’s wild to me that a KOPW (King Of Pro Wrestling) match makes the list, and a brief synopsis is offered of what KOPW is while also COMPLETELY DROPPING THE BALL AND NOT MENTIONING THAT MATCH BETWEEN TORU YANO AND MINORU SUZUKI WHERE SUZUKI ENDED UP LOCKED INSIDE A DOG CAGE!! C’mon Tempest. You’re slipping. 😂 Merry Christmas!!
2023 might be one of the best year wrestling has ever had. Every promotion seems to be hitting on all cylinders. WWE finally made its turn to getting back to form, AEW is finally hitting its stride with the C2, Impact is going back to its roots, and NJPW is putting on great matches as well! Plus, the indy scene is popping off as always, and it genuinely seems like wrestling is in a great spot. Will wrestling ever be back to the attitude era levels of hype? No, but this is very exciting to see. 2024 has a lot to live up to!
Great list, Tempest. However, I disagree with you calling Bryan Danielson versus MJF the greatest Ironman match of all time. Is it one of the greatest Ironman matches ever? Yes. Is it the greatest? No. In my view that title belongs to Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle’s legendary clash over the WWE Championship on SmackDown in 2003.
And as soon as Tempest says that last sentence prior to finishing the video, we get one more 5-star match: Katsuhiko Nakajima vs. Kento Miyahara (again), this time for the Triple Crown at AJPW MANIAx on New Years Eve.
It's been an awesome year for wrestling bell to bell. I'd be shocked if we don't get a 5 star match from AEW World's End though. I feel like a AEW PPV is virtually guaranteed to get at least one nowadays.
Obviously, Meltzer stars arent the end all be all of wrestling, but they are a decent indicator of general match quality, which makes WWE only having 2 matches on here interesting. There were NXT matches that I felt should have gotten 5 stars, but I also think we should acknowledge how much WWE has cooled off in the second half of the year. Bloodline stuff got stale after Sami, and JD was never really that compelling in the first place. Glad AEW got it's recognition for its incredible matches this year, though.
Its lists like this that really highlight how great wrestling has gotten in the last few years. I almost quit watching wrestling in the early to mid 2010s, but AEW got me back in. I still watch the Rumble and Mania every year, and both those shows were great this year too. It is just really exciting to see where wrestling will go in the future. WWE have greatly stepped up their quality and I for one am excited to see what AEW does to compete. I think the C2 has been a massive step in the right direction.
Meltzer ratings has never been 100% accurate, but the moment he broke his own system, introducing scores above 5 stars was the moment he lost his credibility completely. It inflated the prestige of some great, but not perfect matches and deflated the prestige of some amazing 4,5/4,75 stars matches that happened before the first 6-star Omega v Okada. The fact that random Dynamite or Collision matches without much history are higher rated than Michaels vs Undertaker at WM 25 is kinda sad. Also Kurt Angle didn't get a single 5* match in his career which is mental.
Meltzer has clearly stated that he likes Japanese style, so no wonder Japanese promotions and aew starts who have been with Japanese promotions get 5 star ratings
Why to people always assume that Meltzer himself OR anyone else thinks his ratings are "100% accurate"? They are subjective ratings. Just like movie ratings by movie critics. They're not supposed to be taken as "the truth", they're supposed to be used as guidelines to give the potential audience an idea of what to expect from the movie, also based on what they know about the critic's personal taste. I don't give a fuck if Meltzer rates a match 5 stars, 6 stars or 4,5 stars, the end result is the same: He thinks it's an incredibly good match that everyone should at least check out, so that's what I'll do, and then draw my own conclusions. Because I trust the opinion of a guy who has led me to a lot of amazing matches I wouldn't have known otherwise. It's just what Tempest said at the start of this video: You don't have time to watch every match that happens. So what do you do? You look up online what matches might be worth your time. Him breaking his own system was just his way of expressing that he thinks wrestling has gone to a new level, so he had to introduce numbers above 5 to show how he likes one amazing match more than the other. Or else all those 6 star matches would've just been another 5er. It doesn't invalidate anything, because it's not science. It's his personal opinion and he can tweak it however he wants.
The outrage over the blood drinking was so funny. You'd think he squeezed his head like an orange or something by the way people were freaking out about it. Good ass match.
It blows my mind that Kenny Omega versus MJF didn't make this list. Dave Meltzer seriously needs to go back and watch that match. I ain't saying it was match of the year, but I am saying it should most definitely be on this list. I promise if that match is on a PLE next year it will be! Also where in the actual F is Adam Cole versus MJF!!!?
My match of the year was Ospreay/Omega at WK17. But runner up is Queens Quest vs Oedotai elimination cagematch. Dave didn't give 5 stars to anything in Stardom this year and that's unfortunately expected from him. Tam vs Giulia, Saya Kamitani vs Hazuki and Mina vs Natsupoi were all worthy of it
In the 20+ years of TNA history, it’s wild to me that Meltzer only gave two of its matches five stars. There have been many matches (in my opinion) that have been better than unbreakable and some better than the Ospreay match.
Dave's star ratings don't really matter but what does matter is the quality and the matches in this year are of high quality and the bar is raised for 2024 let's go
@@six6thdiscipleI can see that. Kento matches have a deliberate formula but if you can stay the course you will be transformed. Also I'm a Yuma boy over a Kento man so no problems of you got issues. Final thing was your caps lock on

Ospreay is really the GOAT of 2023.
I understand the criticism for Hangman vs. Swerve at Full Gear, and I don't think it was a 5-star match. However, it did not deserve the AMOUNT of criticism that it received. It was a grudge match in a very personal feud, so wtf did people expect? A 20-minute match full of rest holds? The drinking of the blood was WAY OTT as well as some other parts of it, but that does not take away from the performance they put forth.
A Kenny Omega vs Will Osprey match was just a thing of pure beauty. Now I know AEW has its fair share of problems and I will agree with the problems, but you cannot deny that they can put together a fucking amazing match!

Matches might be hard but I’ll do ppvs.
Personally for me:
1. WrestleMania
2. All In
3. Revolution
4. NJPW Dominion
5. Money in the Bank
6. NXT Battleground
7. Elimination Chamber
8. Royal Rumble
9. All Out
10. Forbidden Door 2
I would say Osprey vs Omega at Forbidden Door takes it over WK17 purely for the visual of the blood running down the steel steps. My bones shiver every time I see it.
I like the Forribiden door one better cause I was there live So happy I got to see Omega vs Osprey live. It was insane took my dad and it got him back into wrestling he couldn’t believe how good they were
I had to pause and giggle at "Holy Smokes, Bologna, Fudge and Mustard"
Will Ospreay.
"Superlative": Dictionary Definition.
The form of an adjective or adverb that expresses that the thing or person being described has more of the particular quality than anything or anyone else of the same type.
Need to start star rating the storylines lol
Bloodline in the first half of 2023: 5 stars
Bloodline in the second half of 2023: 2 stars
Randy Orton v Triple H WM25 was a 5-star storyline while their match wasn't lol
@@kawaiipotetu4047Orton vs Triple H is the reason why I feel Match quality is just as important as storylines because while the storyline was great, the match itself was a straight up boring dumpster fire that made me fall asleep.
@@mrlaidback83 I agree. A match without a story will have a hard time getting me interested, unless it's some dream match as a special attraction. But on the other hand, the best story will leave a sour taste in your mouth, if the big match it had been building up to is a wet fart. Sting vs Hogan would be a prime example for this.
Omega has a huge head jeez I’ve never noticed that til seeing that closeup of him and ospreay.
Dude, looking back at this list, Will Ospreay was in God mode this year.
Or uncle Dave’s pockets
@@joshtroiano5613nope, Will Osprey doesn't need Dave to be in god mode all year
Yeah man... Especially with the match against El Phantasmo in NJPW G1 Climax... That match was fire💥
Dynamite just had its second lowest rated show in its existence on Wednesday so I wouldn’t say the CC is popping off
20:23 "or until dave gives another match 5 stars"
Katsuhiko nakajima vs kento miyahara II laughing in the corner.
Babe wake up! Tempest dropped his best 5 star of 2023 list!
Ah a person of culture
I think Lesnar vs Angle Is probably the greatest Ironman match ever but Danielson vs MJF was also an excellent Ironmsn and is a very close 2nd imho.
And as soon as Tempest says that last sentence prior to finishing the video, we get one more 5-star match: Katsuhiko Nakajima vs. Kento Miyahara (again), this time for the Triple Crown at AJPW MANIAx on New Years Eve.
Gunther vs Shemus vs Drew was possibly the best match of the year in my opinion or atleast top 3.
Feel bad for my Guilia didn't get any 5 stars, dude is literally the best Women wrestler this year
It's been an awesome year for wrestling bell to bell. I'd be shocked if we don't get a 5 star match from AEW World's End though. I feel like a AEW PPV is virtually guaranteed to get at least one nowadays.
This year every promotion thrived and had great moments and I don’t think wrestling has felt any bigger for a long long time
Basing a video on Dave’s 5 star system is wild….😂
Since his pathetic attempt at explaining his rating system on the CVV interview, I'm surprised anybody still listens to that stooge
Great list
The ftr bullet club gold match is literally my favourite match of last year
Obviously, Meltzer stars arent the end all be all of wrestling, but they are a decent indicator of general match quality, which makes WWE only having 2 matches on here interesting.
5 star matches but fat slobs under the wrestling bubble cant see the dwindling support....lol shame
Sooooooo based on the numbers AEW & NJPW were more entertaining than the other brand huh 🤷🏾♂️ FACTZ!!!
I think the C2 has been a massive step in the right direction.
all 5 star but you left one out Christian cage vs Darby Allen Wrestle Dream !!!!!
Watching this video makes me proud of AEW and the quality of wrestling they have. Them and NJPW carried 2023
Katsuhiko Nakajima vs Kento Miyahara, AJPW Mania X: 5.25⭐
He gave kurt the title of best wrestler of decade (2000-09) though. Don't know why people don't mention it.
It's Dave Meltzer....
You would think TK could get more matches for what he pays Uncle Dave.
LOL! 😂😂
Please do Top 10. When Wrestler Staredowns and gets goosebumps AEW & wwe 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
The outrage over the blood drinking was so funny. You'd think he squeezed his head like an orange or something by the way people were freaking out about it. Good ass match.
Osprey should change his name to 5 ⭐
It's absolutely mad what a run Will Ospreay had this year.
I loved chanting yes and watching that iron man match while on a lot of 🍃 gummies, whilst there live in person was chefs kiss
Practically, this is just will osprey 2023 matches list
Hey Tempest, next year you must do a shot every time Will Osprey has a 5 🌟 or higher match. Lol
This year was amazing for wrestling fans.
You got the Ospreay vs Omega II rating wrong. The FD match only got 6 stars, not 6.25
Holy shit, Swerve beat Hangman in a Texas Deathmatch the same way Hangman beat Moxley in the same match.
Wild.
Funny thing about Meltzer once his AEW sources dried up he went on a campaign against them.
In my opinion. Gunther vs Sheamus vs Drew McIntyre isn't spoken about enough
Kenny omega VS Will Ospreay at Forbidden Door 6 stars
Naito vs Okada G1 Climax 5.25 stars
My favourite was Will Ospreay vs Kenny Omega Forbidden Door then the Wrestlemaina Triple Theat Intercontinental title match
What about Will Ospreay vs Josh Alexander?
GodDAMN what a banger year of wrestling
Hyped for bangers in 24
It's funny Dave gave Ospreay/Takagi 5 stars, when Ishii/Jacobs was way better that night and he gave it 4.75. Dave's bias is mad at times
My match of the year was Ospreay/Omega at WK17. But runner up is Queens Quest vs Oedotai elimination cagematch. Dave didn't give 5 stars to anything in Stardom this year and that's unfortunately expected from him. Tam vs Giulia, Saya Kamitani vs Hazuki and Mina vs Natsupoi were all worthy of it
Bryan Danielson vs ZSJ is easily my match of the year , i was ik attendance for the match
In the 20+ years of TNA history, it’s wild to me that Meltzer only gave two of its matches five stars. There have been many matches (in my opinion) that have been better than unbreakable and some better than the Ospreay match.
Will ospreay list
2023 was my favorite pro wrestling year of all time
I've never been this early to a PFK video idk what to do
There was a time when 5 star matches were rare. Now it happens so often it isn't as special anymore.
And I guess Meltzer is of the same opinion, which is why he had to open the lid of his system to 6 or even 7. Wrestling has just gotten too good.
Dave Meltzer is irrelevant.
To you he's relevant at least
Just like these "star" rating, none of it actually means anything.
@@ramborhoa It means something to people like you
He got some match rating wrong but at least he didn't forget them.
Dave's star ratings don't really matter but what does matter is the quality and the matches in this year are of high quality and the bar is raised for 2024 let's go
On partsfunknown they actually mentioned Kento Miyahara, Katsuhiko Nakajima and my boi Yuma Aoyagi not Yumi Aoyagi. The Japanese MVP best goober alive
IM TRYING TO WATCH THAT “KENTO” MATCH…IT STARTS OUT A LITTLE TOO SLOW FOR ME
@@six6thdiscipleI can see that. Kento matches have a deliberate formula but if you can stay the course you will be transformed. Also I'm a Yuma boy over a Kento man so no problems of you got issues. Final thing was your caps lock on
Ospreay vs Kenny
Ospreay vs Takagi
Ospreay vs Okada
Ospreay vs El Phantasmo
Ospreay vs Mike Bailey

Ospreay vs Naito
Ospreay vs Finlay
Ospreay vs Kidd

Ospreay is really the GOAT of 2023.
Melzer love Japan and AeW
I understand the criticism for Hangman vs. Swerve at Full Gear, and I don't think it was a 5-star match. However, it did not deserve the AMOUNT of criticism that it received. It was a grudge match in a very personal feud, so wtf did people expect? A 20-minute match full of rest holds? The drinking of the blood was WAY OTT as well as some other parts of it, but that does not take away from the performance they put forth.
Aew,New Japan,Will Ospreay Put In The Work 2023 and will do the same in 2024
These 5-stars matches mean very little as Dave has clearly said that he prefers one style of wrestling over the other in the CVV podcast.
So what? He's allowed to, just like any fan. That doesn't mean that he doesn't give credit where it's due.
A Kenny Omega vs Will Osprey match was just a thing of pure beauty.
Now I know AEW has its fair share of problems and I will agree with the problems, but you cannot deny that they can put together a fucking amazing match!
You get five stars 🌟 and you get five stars 🌟
Getting in before the meltzer bashing.
What?
@@Highly3666 He's getting in before people bash Meltzer, that's it.
