    gonna chuck all my comments on bread's comments in here:
    1. Wine is probably in the adventurer's rations for the same reason as people used to drink alcohol a lot more regularly than they do now: Alcohol lasts much longer than regular water, and there're no worries about it being dirty/getting you sick. Also worth noting that these rations are the ones taken from the corpse retrievers, not something kabru and gang packed, so it would have been to their preferences.
    2. The steamed nightmares would be most analogous to clams, and would probably be very similar in texture. Also saying that because they're both dragons that the nightmares would be similar to the red dragon is like saying the american bison and sheep would be similar because they're both bovids.
    3. I don't agree with the S rating for the slime aspic. minotaur ribs, and bladefish loaf. Not only is it remarked to be flavourless but it also looks like that 60s era american food where they put gelatin in everything. Even if we were just going off the first part alone, it's a C at best.

      Point 2 I was thinking the same thing, they COULD of had an ancestor that they both came from before splitting off into there own lineage but saying they could have a similar texture to the red dragon...that's like saying a cabbage and a rocket (the plant) are one in the same

  • @GlobalsoftPirka

    The steamed custard they made with the grilled fish is supposed to be based on Chawanmushi, if I'm not mistaken. It's a savory egg and dashi custard that you can add basically anything to, from seafood and chicken to veggies. It's eaten a lot in traditional Japanese spots.
    I love how the show integrates Japanese cuisine in a more Western fashion to make it feel more believable in this vaguely European enviroment. It's super creative and fun to watch how they make these little tweaks and changes to the meals.

    A comment on the Soul Eggs Benedict: The brighter yellow sauce on top wasn't just more egg yolk, it was hollandaise sauce! Hollandaise sauce is an absolutely beautiful thing and a sauce I adore, it's what makes Eggs Benedict what it is! If you have not had the dish before, I highly recommend!
    The taste of the sauce itself is a tangy thing, comprised mainly of egg yolk, lemon juice, and butter. (some recipes also include white wine! though I doubt it was added in this particular case) It's such a wonderful compliment to the egg! This dish truly an S Tier in my book!

    For the question about the wine in the adventurer's rations, bacteria was still poorly understood in the medieval ages and it was thought that wine was safer to consume for journeys like this. Plus wine does taste pretty good.

  • @whos_that_one_guy
    @whos_that_one_guy 14 дней назад +1

    1:59 back in medieval times people commonly drank beer instead of water because water often gets infected/dirty, this may be the reason why it’s there and plus it probably gets stressful in the dungeon depending on what level you are

  • @UnluckyTraitor038
    @UnluckyTraitor038 2 месяца назад +5

    The fact that the adventurer's rations do not contain pemmican is heresy to me

  • @SomeoneNews
    @SomeoneNews Месяц назад +1

    1:59 for the wine question. Historically water has been very difficult to preserve some people lots of times used alcohol as replacements because it wouldn't get infected with microscopic bacteria.

  • @BlueFireDrakka
    @BlueFireDrakka 25 дней назад

    the reason of why wine is a little known fact about carrying water: the longer you have it the more it stagnates and you get bacteria build up which turns perfectly fine drinking water into a bad time in the waiting, especially if your container is a waterskin and drink from wooden cup; leather and wood gives the bacteria all the nooks and crannies to live inside of.
    Alcohol in contrast kills bacteria, so if you cut a little wine into some water it basically disinfects it, its why when they show people refilling their water containers they wash it out first before refilling it.
    its also why sailors had a thing of being 'drunk' all the time, Grog is basically Boozy water so they can keep drinking it without it going foul from being kept in barrels for weeks at a time.

  • @LeeLaBahHeh
    @LeeLaBahHeh 2 месяца назад +14

    In medieval times wine was different then what it is today~, in the dungeon meshi time period the wine must be the same~. Wine back then had more carbs then alcohol~, so it a thing people had with almost every meal or it was the thing replacing food on the road~. It lasted longer, lighter so traveling with it is easier, and finally it was so easy and cheap to make most people had their own stoke~.

    • @Silentgrace11
      @Silentgrace11 Месяц назад

      To add to this, what alcohol it did have served as more of a preservative than anything, which ensured that unlike water, it didn’t start to go off after awhile.

  • @phucletran2860
    @phucletran2860 Месяц назад

    I think the reason wine is there for emergency. In case, you travel long stretch of ground but cant find drinkable water source. Plus, drinking wine also provide with some nutrition and energy to keep going (looking at sailor, they drink watered down wine to provide water and some nutrition). Furthermore, a ration is a collection of long shelf life food to use on long journey, it has to be there (influence from real life perhaps).
    What it shown is that Kui sensei is a really fan of D&D and she knows her stuff real good.

    While using familiar summoning is inefficient to prepare food, it's not AS inefficient as it would seem, given that Skyfish is one of three familiars created in the spell. So instead of a week's supplies for one meal, it's a week's supplies for one day. And with that kind of ratio, it could see it being a possible niche technique for the elite.

    • @H1tARun
      @H1tARun 2 месяца назад

      There's another small moment with familiars. Hair. It didn't evaporate, but became part of the dish. I don't really remember if they showed it in the anime, but in the manga Izumi ended up spitting out Marcille's hair due to her inability to digest it.

    Wine is likely in the rations because its hydration, plus calories, and the alcohol helps it keep well. IIUC, some places especially in the ancient past prefer alcoholic drinks to water, because of potential waterborne diseases in the local water. Alcohol helps sterilize your hydration, when you don’t have access to the option of boiling or otherwise purifying your drinking water on the go.

    Then Sky Fish n chips definitely caught me off guard given how looking at the essence, not a single bit of it is remotely fish parts at all. At best it's more like pretending to have a bunch of other ingredients, other meats, vegetables, and then wrapping it with a thin layer of whatever fish while still cooking it no different to beer batter'd fish.
    On top of that because it's a Familiar summon, that depends on the person casting and the result of whatever it takes, giving you the unsure if it taste exactly what it looks like or what ingredient is need to make a familiar.

    Days of sailing sailors usually bring wine instead of water on long voyages. So because this takes place in a similar time period, With similar circumstances it makes sense 🤔

    Ok here we go! As a picky eater could even eat that meal in dungeon meshi? Let's see! (Sorry for typos on phone at 3am)
    Curent score from core one: 9/17
    -Adventurers rations: YES :there's sure is bread there! And meat! Those are edible things!
    -jack o Lantern potage: NO :I do NOT need to explain this one. Look at it!
    -pickled cockatrise: NOT REALLY :I... it's just bread again for me boys ;-;
    -the brick: NO :litterally nothing in this looks appealing.
    -Harpy egg: YES :not in the video but I'd eat it. It's egg. And if be starving at this point. Tho I may try and just get some rice from Shuros gang ;-;
    -5th floor pilaf: MAYBE :oh holly shit there's rice, that might be edible! If it's not mixed with too much other... stuff... oof ye there's a high chance of no actually ;-;
    -risotto: MAYBE :so long as I remove the mushrooms it should be edible. Tho cheesy rice is... questionable.
    -nightmares: NO :don't like clams.
    -egg custard and fish: KINDA? :there are... salvageable bits. Eat the cursard with no bits. There's reasonable fish on the side. Enough for an ok meal.
    -baromentz chops: NO :I... no. No.
    -soul eggs benadict: KINDA :there sure is bread, and egg popped a bit differently I could eat?
    -beef ribs and others: YES: just the ribs, give me the ribs.
    -senshi pancakes: YES :also not in the video but these are a huge YES from me! Finally some good fucking food.
    -sky fish and chips: NO :wtf even is this.
    -Griff soups: maybe :it looks bad, but it sure looks edible enough and like grossish stew.
    -hypogriff dumplings: NO :I can get through 1 bite before I'm tapping out.
    -transformed dumplings: maybe :there is a world one of those fuckers is edible.
    9/18 for the second core
    18/35 over all.
    So holding steady at about? Half? Many more tough stretches in the second core tho. I'd probably have died in castle town from starvation, but eh maybe I could pull through? I'll count it as a survive, if just bearly. Bread my savior truly!

    On the question of wine being part of the adventurer's rations, I'd imagine it's for the same reasons sailors took ale or rum on their voyages. Alcohol lasts longer than water before going bad so, if caught in a situation without ready access to a clean water source, wine would be better than nothing.
